Margot and the Nuclear So & So's are an 8-piece circle of young friends from Indiana who, in the spring of 2005, quietly released one of the most beloved indescribable records in recent memory, The Dust of Retreat. The band has clocked more than 100,000 miles on the road, playing sold out shows in New York, Chicago, and of course, Indianapolis. ‘Morris puts her own mark on a dozen songs on August. Almost all of them covers, from John Lennon's Whatever Gets You Through The Nightto Marvin Gaye's Mercy, Mercy Me and Leonard Cohen's Chelsea Hotel. Marc Ribot - an American guitarist who has worked with Tom Waits and Marianne Faithfull, collaborated with Morris in selecting, arranging, and producing the tracks. Morris picked some of her favorite songs, and the duo created spare arrangements in the studio, recording the entire CD in three days without rehearsals.
"We tried to find something new that could be revealed from these old songs," explains Ribot, "In many cases, we radically rearranged tunes. Don't Leave Me This Way, for example, doesn't sound much like The Communards version, because in that version the melody was obscured by the fact that it was a disco tune. "

Jennifer recorded her new LP/CD ‘Here With Me’ (OLE 787-1,2) earlier this year with John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth) at Brooklyn’s Headgear Studios. It’s a breezier, more upbeat work than 2006’s fantastic ‘Over The Mountain, Across The Valley and Back To The Stars’, but I’d be lying if I told you the new album packed any less of an emotional wallop. Jennifer’s songs have never before sounded this crafted, or hit the listener with such immediacy.

Backed by a crack backing trio of Jon Langmead, Michael Broadlieb and Michael Strandberg (and joined, briefly, by Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay), O’Connor tackles her most evocative pile of relationship-tunes with something approaching surgical precision. Over the past 6 years, Jennifer’s gotten scary good at this sort of thing, so much so that most other contenders for the hypothetical Nobel prize for Witty Pop Songs W/ Heart are either former members of this label’s roster (we’re thinking Manning/Phair/Daniel but if you wanna nominate someone more contemporary, please go right ahead) or they’ve already been embalmed in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

The Black Ghosts - The Black Ghosts (2008)

When Simian disbanded, the majority of the group became Simian Mobile Disco, while former singer Simon Lord hooked up with former Wiseguys producer DJ Touche (aka Theo Keating) and became one half of the Black Ghosts. Though the duo's self-titled debut album is less bouncy and eclectic than Simian's work, Lord's years with that band sharpened his pop skills, and his smooth croon is still immediately recognizable. To be fair to the Black Ghosts, Lord and Touche whip through nearly as many sounds and hooks as Simian did -- they just take a subtler, slightly more sophisticated approach that fits in nicely with Hot Chip, Chromeo, Gorillaz (it's no coincidence that Damon Albarn makes a cameo on "Repetition Kills You"), and other dance-meets-rock contemporaries. The Black Ghosts cover both ends of that spectrum, opening the album with the bleak rock of "Some Way Through This" and returning to heavier guitars on "Until It Comes Again," and delivering more straightforward dance on "I Don't Know" and "Face." However, the duo sound best when they're right in the middle of those sounds, mixing and matching styles and coating them with pop gloss. The singles "Anyway You Choose to Give It" and "I Want Nothing" rival the best songs by the Black Ghosts' more established peers, while the soft rock/synth pop fusion of "Something New" and "It's Your Touch" is appealingly nostalgic and novel-sounding at the same time. "Full Moon" blends plaintive harmonies and fingerpicked acoustic guitars borrowed from British folk with subtler electronic touches, offering a refreshing change of pace as well as a side to the Black Ghosts' sound that they should explore further. Bitter:Sweet - Drama (2008)

Old meets new as the nightclubs of the past get a modern twist on Bitter:Sweet’s sophomore epic, Drama. The L.A. duo of Shana Halligan and Kiran Shahani made a splash in 2006 with their debut, The Mating Game. After following it up last year with a record of remixes, The Remix Game, they now deliver some all-new material on Drama. The ‘Swinging Sixties cool’ vibe is still very present amid the twenty-first century electronic trance, but there’s also a prewar cabaret nightclub atmosphere, which at times lifts Bitter:Sweet to new heights.

After the ten-second “Intro Dramatico”, Drama launches into one of its best tracks, “Get What I Want”. This grand, femme fatale, cabaret orchestra is knowing and enchanting. Unfortunately, the following “Come Along With Me” is a little too grand, its changes too stark. Luckily, the changes on the subsequent “The Bomb” work much better amid the more fun time at the nightclub. Winning in its charm, its no surprise that NBC picked it as the theme song for their ‘Sex & The City – but with Brooke Shields’, Lipstick Jungle.

From there, Bitter:Sweet change things up more and more, to mostly strong results. The title track is more jazz club than nightclub, certainly more dramatic, but interesting. “Sugar Mama” is a cute, twinkling raindrops amid the sunshine sixties ditty. “Trouble” is a 007-esque spy drama track, and while not quite as great as promised, is still good. There are some slips, with the more relaxed “A Moment” slightly off amid all the Drama, but it’s really when Bitter:Sweet go disco-dance that they slide, as the wa-wa of “Waking Up” and dance-trance of “Love Revolution” are neither amazing. The record finishes out with the quiet orchestra strings-and-piano coda, “Everything”, but not before returning to its grand femme roots with “Neurosis”, which is then exceeded by the grand-yet-intimate nightclub experience of the very effective penultimate piece, “Drink You Sober”.

Western North America has seen something of a revival in recent years of the ‘grande dame’ nightclub style, from Dallas’ St. Vincent (QRO spotlight on) to Vancouver’s Ann Vriend (QRO album review), and Bitter:Sweet have certainly tapped into that on Drama. Lipstick Jungle was renewed by NBC this spring, despite low ratings (and the cancellation of ABC’s nearly identical Cashmere Mafia), proving the staying power of Brooke Shields (how else do you explain four seasons of Suddenly Susan?…). That, or someone in the programming department just knows you need some Bitter:Sweet with your Drama.

The Ragga Twins are the link between UK dancehall reggae, jungle and hip-hop. This is a retrospective of their classic (and now very rare) early tracks produced by Shut Up and Dance at the start of the 1990s.

The Ragga Twins (alongside producers PJ and Smiley, AKA Shut Up and Dance) revolutionised UK dance music at the start of the 1990s bringing Reggae and Hip-Hop styles together to create Jungle. As drum and bass approaches its 20th anniversary and as new developments such as Grime, UK Garage - and most recently Dubstep – create artists and producers who continue to cite Jungle as a pivotal moment in the UKs musical history, Ragga Twins Step Out, chronicles one of the most important groups of this time.

The Ragga Twins (Deman Rockers and Flinty Badman) began their careers as MCs for North London’s legendary Unity reggae sound system. The Ragga Twins were born after Shut up and Dance sampled the pair’s introduction on a dancehall mix-tape and then offered them a deal. At the height of rave culture, The Ragga Twins found themselves playing at raves up and down the country. With one album (Reggae Owes Me Money) and a steady stream of killer singles over the next couple of years the Ragga Twins’ musical blueprint of basslines, breakbeats and ragga defined Jungle music in the years to come.

As well as a serious overview of The Ragga Twins tracks with Shut Up and Dance, this album also features the super-rare bonus tracks “Iron Lady” and “Hard Drugs”, dating back to their pre-Ragga Twins, Dancehall days with the Unity Soundsystem. Singer/guitarist Joey Burns and fellow band founder and drummer John Convertino recorded the album with steel guitarist Paul Niehaus, bassist Volker Zander and multi-instrumentalists Jacob Valenzuela and Martin Wenk, who've been band members since 2003's Feast Of Wire. Carried To Dust features guest appearances from Iron & Wine's Sam Beam, who collaborated with Calexico on their In The Reins EP, Iowa singer/songwriter Pieta Brown and Tortoise bassist Doug McCombs, among others.

"I first saw Chairlift about a year-and-a-half ago, not long after the trio had picked up from their hometown of Boulder, CO and headed east to start a new life in Brooklyn. I remember being totally drawn into the band's folky, electronic-tinged pop songs and singer Caroline Polachek possessing the pipes of a young, opera-trained Chan Marshall.
While Chairlift hadn't quite blossomed, they were about to, and soon after their name started appearing on frequent bills with groups like MGMT, YACHT and Yeasayer. Now comes their first full-length, Does You Inspire You, which certainly is a much more assured and textured affair than their early live shows. On record, the electronic production is a lot more prevalent and, mirroring the band members' art school pedigree, tracks like "Planet Health" and "Evident Utensil" could arguably trace some lineage back to Kate Bush, though Chairlift balances the mysterious with playful, un-pretentious imagery -- the aforementioned "Evident Utensil" is a song about pencils. One of my favorite tracks, "Bruises," is as lilting as any Au Revoir Simone tune (although the guys outnumber the girls 2 to 1 in Chairlift), with its bouncy Casio beat and Polachek's gentle heartbreak yearning of "I tried to do hand stands for you / but every time I fell for you / I'm permanently black and blue."

While much of Does You Inspire You buzzes with synthesizer pads, the band doesn't stray too far into Electroland with Patrick Wimberly drumming atop the digital beats, as well as the human accompaniment of strings, bells, vibraphone and pedal steel. Near the record's end, Chairlift throw technology out the window with album highlight "Don't Give a Damn," a beautifully fragile, reverb-tinged Western ballad in which Polachek and guitarist Aaron Pfenning's breathy duet is soon edged out by a ghostly choir of voices. Currently only available as a download until the CD's release in late October, Does You Inspire You is wholly unique to what we've come to expect out of Brooklyn. Chairlift is currently on tour with Ariel Pink, a brilliantly head-scratching pairing; so if they pull through your town, don't miss them. [GH] (July 25, 2008)"

Shelley Short - Water For the Day (2008)

[TIME-CAPSULE COUNTRY] There’s a small contingent of singer-songwriters who are quietly saving country music, and Shelley Short is one of them. It’s not just thanks to her subtly twangy voice or string-laden music. Rather than waxing naively cute, à la Jenny Lewis, or idiotic (most modern country), Short encapsulates much of what makes old-school Nashville country great: a showman’s charisma (think Dolly), credible melancholy (think Patsy) and close geographical ties (think Hush Records).

Which is not to pigeonhole Short’s intimate third full-length, Water for the Day. The Portland chanteuse employs unpredictable vocal melodies and complex arrangements, as well as plenty of downhome charm. On “How Grand,” Short’s light croon mimics a fluttering hummingbird, pairing coos with tricky rhythms and scale-spanning runs. Later, when bells chime throughout song’s end, you can almost feel cherry blossoms drifting to the ground like snow. “Single Minded Hero” employs a like playfulness, where such proclamations as “My, what a beautiful sunset” and “Words, they cannot hurt me” straddle the line between tongue-in-cheek and straightforward. The song’s quirky question-and-answer refrain, “Are you getting lost on purpose? No, no, no, no, no,” paints an image of Short aimlessly wandering—a broad smile across her face.

It’s these histrionics that—despite lazy accordion, ghostly saw and softly picked guitar and banjo—give Water singular flair. But Short’s not all winking odes to figurative ponies (“4 Legs & Light”) and lighthearted, half-yodeled music-box waltzes (“The Getalong”)—both of which make grand use of Hush labelmate Rachel Blumberg’s light, skilled hand on the drums. When she sings “I don’t know a goddamn thing/ Thank God” on “Godamn Thing,” her sprightly demeanor is quickly weighed down by a solemn, communication-breakdown admission—“I didn’t say anything/ I didn’t say anything at all”—an ominous chorus and low, bowed strings.
