Following the enormous acclaim that created “Timbuktu”, Issa Bagayogo returns with the stunning “Tassoumakan”"Issa Bagayogo has struck a magical balance between roots authenticity and 21st century hip, a balance that a lot of artists have been aiming for and missing. These tunes deliver not just the flavour but the feeling of Africa." NPR People like to see artists improve upon past efforts, but count it as a victory that Issa Bagayogo was able to match the beauty of 2002's TIMBUKTU.
Like its predecessor, Tassoumakan features a seamless fusion of traditional Malian griot roots music and 21st-century electronic programming. Longtime producer, musician and collaborator Yves Wernert has continued to shine as the sound architect, making the sonic marriage more natural sounding than ever. The band also features hot guitarists Mama Sissoko and Karamokou Diabate and flutist Djuro Diallo. Bagayogo is brooding and moody, yet there is a quiet tension to the slower work, and a yearning to his fast songs that makes the music compelling.

The album was recorded in two weeks of all-night sessions and features a string section, a horn section arranged by Pee Wee Ellis, and singers including the local hero Kasse Mady Diabate. Fifty-fourth in a hereditary line of master musicians and jelis (griots), Toumani Diabate is simultaneously revered as the guardian of an ancient musical tradition and as a bold, boundary-crossing experimentalist. He has earned acclaim for inventive solo records as well as collaborations with Blur's Damon Albam, American bluesman Taj Mahal, and the nuevo flamenco group Ketama, among others.

***********
Malian singer Rokia Traore attracted a lot of attention with her 1998 debut Mouneissa and the even better Wanita in 2000. Now the singer-songwriter returns with Bowmboi, an album filled with creative aspiration but still set within the framework of traditional Malian instrumentation. As with the past efforts, the singer is again accompanied by acoustic guitar, n'goni (African lute), kora harp and balafon (a buzzing marimba). But here the stripped-down songs are darker and more mature, creating an overall vibe that sensuously haunting, particularly when she adds polyphonic multi-track call-and-response vocals. Amidst these earthy arrangements, the Kronos Quartet joins in for "Manian" and "Bowmboi." Having a western and modern classical feel, the music is a departure that nonetheless works because Traore matches their rhythms while staying within her creative vision. Indeed, her singing in her native Bamanan is the cornerstone to the album, soaring high and erupting into cadenzas or riding long wavering lines that shimmer with passion.

BLACK IVORY SOUL was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best World Music Album.

For the Bill Laswell-produced BLACK IVORY SOUL, Angelique Kidjo's first album since 1998's OREMI, the world music diva explores the link between the Brazilian city of Bahia and her home country of Benin. Befitting her multi-cultural background, Kidjo worked with an impressive range of talent including Brazilians Carlinhos Brown and Vinicius Cantaria, Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson and soul singer Cindy Mizelle. The result is an album's worth of music that's very much percussion-driven and peppered with plenty of irresistible grooves ranging from the life affirming "Tumba," (which is the name for congas in Benin), to the airy, acoustic guitar-dappled "Ominira" (Yoruba for freedom).
Among the few English-language songs are the funky title track with its Fela-lite backbeat and the infectious "Iwoya," seemingly a stab at college radio airplay by way of guest Dave Matthews's vocal contribution. Kidjo also continues her penchant for unusual covers--this time out, Serge Gainsbourg's "Ces Petits Riens" is given a delicate rendering and Gilberto Gil's "Refavela" benefits from a sassy, percussion-soaked interpretation sung in the African dialect of Fon. BLACK IVORY SOUL is a glimpse at what the future of global pop looks like entering the 21st Century.

Quote:
Like many immigrants, Senegalese musician Vieux Diopcame to America to "experience new things. I wanted to come over, see the U.S., and try my luck."
But when Diop, who has just released Afrika Wassa (Triloka), arrived in New York in 1983, he discovered that "African music and culture was really not known. I remember that if you went out in African clothes, people would look at you and wonder why you were wearing pajamas."
Meeting some other Senegalese, he began playing his harp-like kora with them, and made ends meet by teaching language classes. Although music was his focus, it took 11 years before he issued his first album, the Caribbean-flavored Deeso, followed in 1995 by Vieux Diop (Vieux Jo).
During that decade, American ears began to open up to people like Baaba Maal and Salif Keita, and Diop's old friend, Youssou N'Dour. Diop, whose real name is Alioune (Vieux, meaning old, is a nickname from his grandfather), and N'Dour had started out playing and recording together in Dakar's Star Band when they were teenagers, with Diop behind his first instrument, a drum kit.

This self-titled debut is an amazing collection, spotlighting the Malian guitarist in his full solo acoustic glory for a beautiful, intimate music that recalls American blues. The beauty of Ali Farka Toure lives in Toure's light, nimble touch on the strings as well as his flexible, reedy voice, which both perfectly complement his gentle, ambling rhythmic style. Tastier highlights include the cantering "Tchigi Fo," with haunting call-and-response sung in Songhai, and the oddly pastoral "Kadi Kadi," a sweet folk song about an encounter with a young woman and her gift of a gold chain. The Arabic praise song "Bakoye" is a comely love song that pulses with Ali's low, bubbling fingerpicking over which his voice soars in a lovely bucolic melody. "Amandrai," in both a studio and live version, is the kind of bluesy tune that's made Toure famous and earned him comparisons to Lightnin' Hopkins and John Lee Hooker. And in later releases, we indeed witness the Malian master collaborating with such Western artists as the Chieftains and Taj Mahal, but this loner of a debut features the guitarist's talents in a quietly understated, purely African light.

Background information:
Tinariwen strip rock down to its basic building blocks of rhythm, guitars, and voice. On their second CD there are no fancy studio tricks or multiple overdubs. They stick to what they've shown they do well -- keep the music raw and emotional. While there are similarities to the desert blues of Mali, these Tuareg nomads from the Western Sahara are as much as rock band as the Stones at their best, capable of conjuring up magic with a guitar riff or lick. Oftentimes, the music has the same bluesy, undulating, hypnotic rhythm of a camel crossing the sand, as on "Aldhechen Manin." But they can also crank the amps and unleash something to tingle the spine and feet, which they do on "Oualahila Ar Tesninam," as frantic and primal a piece of rock & roll as you're likely to find. There's even a touch of rap on "Arawan." But there's a complexity in their basic approach, the interlocking layers of electric guitars and the plaintive, defiant voices. To listen to Tinariwen is to believe once more in rock and its power. This is angry and passionate; it's dangerous music in the very best sense. Western bands might have forgotten how to rock as if their lives depended on it; Tinariwen can teach them. (AMG)

Many world music fans will recall Issa Bagayogo's Timbuktu, the Malian artist's stateside debut. However, Bagayogo first struck gold on Sya, originally released in 1998 to great acclaim in Europe and Mali. It's on Sya that Bagayogo, guitarist Moussa Kone, and programmer Yves Wernert first infused traditional Malian music with electronic beats and other technological production techniques. Creating a more unobtrusive backing than would be heard on Timbuktu, Wernert's programming on Sya not only updated the traditional music, but did so without overshadowing the hypnotic and subtle acoustic strings and percussion. Listeners can hear the timbre of Bagayogo's remarkably expressive kamele n'goni (a small, six-stringed, lute-like instrument) playing as he transitions from low, earthy, fuzzy notes to high clear notes that have the delicacy of acoustic guitar. Perhaps it was the initial rush of this first collaboration that made it so good, but Sya is an even more compelling, and more subtle, listen than the still very fine Timbuktu.

Talking Timbuktu is a groundbreaking record that vividly illustrates the Africa-Blues connection in real time. Ali Farka Toure, one of Mali's leading singer-guitarists, has a trance-like, bluesy style that, although deeply rooted in Malian tradition, bears astonishing similarity to that of John Lee Hooker or even Canned Heat. It's a mono-chordal vamp, with repetitive song lines cut with shards of blistering solo runs that shimmer like a desert mirage. Toure may be conversant with some blues artists, but it is unlikely that artists like Hooker or Robert Pete Williams ever heard these Malian roots, which makes the connection so uncanny. Ry Cooder, well versed in domestic and world guitar styles, is the perfect counterpoint in these extended songs/jams, his sinewy slide guitar intertwining with his partner's in a super world summit without barriers or borders.

Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate, a collaborator in the Songhai and Kulanjan projects as well as the New Ancient Strings album, might just be the best player in the world on his 21-string, harplike instrument. Here, accompanied by Keletigui Diabate on balafon (a kind of xylophone) and Basekou Kouyate on ngoni, he tackles original and traditional material in beautiful fashion. Notes fall in rippling cascades from his fingers, whether on the dainty court song "Marielle" or the title track. The speed and dexterity of his playing, and of his ideas, is staggering, and his complete command of the instrument and its possibilities makes this album a joy. The trio arrangements give plenty of time to all players, although center stage is undoubtedly Toumani. While blissfully African, this is a record that transcends geography and ascends to the sublime.

Salif Keita made his name with Rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs, but he gradually veered away from re-Africanized Latin tunes to explore his Mande birthright. Then, in the late 1980s, he released Soro, a potent blend of traditional sources, Western pop, and savvy studio electronica that took the international market by storm. There have been other high points since then, but on Moffou, what went before is consolidated and transformed via the depth and patina of an artist in his prime. The set opens with a slinky, accordion-laced duet between Keita and Cape Verdean diva Cesaria Evora, but quickly moves on to the soulful Malian acoustic ballads that form the heart and soul of this masterpiece. Other tunes recall the insouciant heyday of Paris-posse Afropop, but minus that era's banal production values. Keita's voice is magnificent throughout; alternately silky, sensual, and ethereal, it floats amid Kante Manfila's intuitive settings like incense.

One of the most internationally successful West African musicians of the last decade, guitarist and singer Ali Farka Toure was approaching the age of 50 when his self-titled album came to the attention of the world music audience in the late '80s. Since then, he's toured in North America and Europe and recorded with artists such as Taj Mahal and members of the Chieftains. But it was his Grammy-winning 1994 collaboration with Ry Cooder, "Talking Timbuktu," that won him on a larger scale. Inspired by African rhythmic and musical traditions extending back for generations, this album features materials originally recorded for broadcast on Radio Mali from 1970-78, and loaned by the station's archive. It was these tapes that introduced Toure's unique guitar style to the attention of his countrymen. Once available in France on vinyl, these were among the very first commercial records of Malian music. Available briefly as an import CD, this treasurable collection comes to the U.S. at last with major distribution, and arrives as his latest release on Ryko hits the #1 spot on the CMJ world chart.

A sangoma is a traditional healer, one who channels the ancestral spirits who advise the living. On this impeccably produced CD, Miriam Makeba returns to her roots, singing the songs of her childhood, and in the process seeks to heal the wounds of apartheid and 30 years of exile from her South African home. The songs here are parables, lullabies, and gathering songs, deeply spiritual and moving. They are songs of struggle and perseverance delivered by Africa's best-loved voice. Mama Africa (Makeba's nickname) is joined by a group of soulful women singers. Some songs feature understated percussion; others are gloriously unadorned a cappella. This is an essential timeless album from one of the world's greatest singers.

There was a time, back in the post-independence era of the 1960s and 70s, when the west African state of Guinea was one of the musical centres of the continent, thanks to President Sékou Touré's policy of providing state funds for new music influenced by traditional styles, and the subsequent rise of remarkable bands such as Bembeya Jazz. The neighbouring countries of Mali and Senegal may have made all the running since then, but there is still a strong music scene in Guinea, as shown by this impressive new album from Amadou Sodia. He plays the four-stringed bolon and is also a fine singer with a confident, easy grandeur that at times echoes Salif Keita - perhaps not surprising, as the musical direction and acoustic guitar work is provided by Kanté Manfila, who has long been associated with the great Malian singer. This is a confident, gently sturdy set that continues the Guinean tradition of balancing the old and the new, with traditional instruments such as the bolon, balafon and kora, matched against guitars, saxophone, flute and cello. Sodia emerges as one of the great under-recognised African singers, though it would be good to hear more variety in his elegant, stately songs.

Issa Bagayogo's Newest Album, "Mali Koura," Released on Six Degrees Records posted: 2008-08-13

Issa Bagayoyo
"...Bagayogo is taking the local music out of the wilderness and moving it into the space age, with digital bravado. He's not making strictly NPR world beat anymore. College kids, world beaters and others looking for out sounds will find a sympathetic fellow traveler on board here."
Midwest Record

Issa Bagayogo may seem like an unlikely candidate for international dancefloor success. His home country of Mali is one of the ten poorest nations in the world, and one in which economic and professional opportunities tend to be shaped by one's caste and ethnic origins - and Issa's heritage pointed him less in the direction of music than in those of blacksmithing and fishing.

In the mid-1990s, after making several recordings and failing to have a regional hit with any of them, Issa was making his living driving a bus while also descending into drug addiction. Eventually he lost his job and his wife, and moved back to the country to stay with his mother. But in the latter half of the decade he made the decision that would change his life and alter the face of the world music scene: he quit taking drugs, moved to Bamako (Mali's capital city) and hit the studio again, this time working with a locally famous production team to create a highly personal sound that combined the acoustic traditions of his region with elements of rock, funk, dub and electronica.

Ten years and four albums later, Issa Bagayogo is a regular star attraction on stages around the continent, playing for huge and wildly enthusiastic audiences. He has become well recognized for his subtly insistent voice and his skillful talent on the n'goni (a three-stringed lute that is popular throughout western Africa). His reception outside of Africa has been warm as well. Reviewing one of his pneumatic live shows, England's Folk Roots magazine marveled at his energy, saying that he “may radically reshape West Africa's groove... when Issa plays, only the dead stay still," while Billboard said it was time to “add this man's name to the growing list of Mali's emerging world-music luminaries." The Village Voice concurred, pronouncing Issa's music as “the finest Afro-European rhythmic structures Mali can provide."

The critical community and fans worldwide have been waiting for over four years in anticipation of Mali Koura, Issa's new release, which has proved to be worth the wait. Issa's sound has matured, tightened and ripened into a fully-realized Afro-European hybrid - no longer does it sound like a fusion of two separate cultures, but rather like the fully-evolved music of a brand new culture. On tracks like “Tcheni Tchemakan" there is a seamless blend of circular chord structure, call-and-response vocals (the lyrics sung in Wolof), a relentlessly chugging, house-derived rhythm, and the subtlest touches of electronic texture filling in some of the spaces. Even the gently lurching and completely non-European rhythm of “Dibi" somehow absorbs and embraces the extended jazz chords and guitar runs that weave through the song like a silvery thread. On “Dunu Kan," the groove is even jazzier, with a swinging horn section and a funky organ, while Issa's vocals dance lightly and joyfully above them. There's also a horn section on “N'Tana," but here the horns are even denser, mirroring the sweet harmonies of the female backing vocalists; a woody-toned flute adds sturdy but elegant filigrees of sound while the beat churns tirelessly beneath. On this track, Issa's vocal is declamatory but self-contained.

“Ahe Sira Bila" hints subtly at reggae, while the bassline incorporates popping funk elements and the vocals strike a calm, almost conversational tone. A marimba drops by to leave a string of pearlescent solo passages near the end. “Namadjidja" is darker and more regretful in tone, with a distantly plinking piano and quiet synthesizer moans over multilayered percussion. “Fimani" is custom-made for the dancefloor, with a bouncy four-on-the-floor beat, brightly tuneful harmony vocals, and horns that blossom unexpectedly out of nowhere before fading away as quickly as they emerged.

One significant reason that the music sounds different this time out is the dramatically different recording approach taken by Issa and his collaborators on this project. Producer Yves Wernert explains that normally, Issa proposes ten to fifteen songs to which the two of them then create arrangements in Wernert's Bogolan studio. This time, however, “the strategy was completely different. For this new album, Issa recorded the songs freely on his own, all by himself outside of my house in Bamako - once in a while you can hear birds or mopeds going by. All of the Malian instruments were recorded more or less the same way, either outside the house or in my kitchen."

Once he had the various instrumental tracks recorded, Wernert took them back to his home town of Nancy, France, where he got together with a number of musicians, most notably the fearsomely talented multiinstrumentalist Gael Le Billan; according to both Wernert and Issa, Le Billan brought a “tremendous effort" to the arranging and final production of these tracks, as well as contributing guitar, bass, keyboard, accordion and other instrumental parts. Interestingly, none of the additional tracks was recorded in a studio either - Wernert says that he “never once set foot in a studio during the making of this album."

Almost as impressive as the unique recording approach is the roster of guest musicians who appear on Mali Koura. It includes flutist Ba Diallo (who plays regularly with the National Ensemble of Mali); the French guitarist Pascale Hubert (of Double Nelson); djembe player Adama Diarra (famed for his work with some of Mali's greatest griots as well as jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater); and Issa's longtime guitarist Mama Sissoko (a veteran of Vieux Farka Toure's band).

Take all of these elements together - a fully mature singer of international stature, a creative and musically sympathetic producer with resources and connections in both Mali and France; a constantly-expanding roster of enthusiastic sidemen anxious to participate in the transcontinental experiment; an out-of-the-box recording strategy - and the result is one of the warmest, most surprising and most exciting albums of African music in a decade.

The source of the Niger River? The source of the blues? Ali Farka Toure is one of the great African guitarists--one who has experimented in the most subtle of ways, seeking inspiration but never creating fusions with other popular music styles. The Source is more roots and less fronds than his Ry Cooder recording Talking Timbuktu; this earlier recording did find him working with Taj Mahal and harmonica player Rory McLeod, but mostly this is a recording with his amazing band, calabash players Amadou Sisse and Hamma Sankare and conga player Oumar Toure, plus a chorus of singers. The emphasis is on the guitar of Toure and the source of the music, the soil of Mali itself.

Back in the early '70s, a recording by kora masters Sidiki Diabate and Djelimadi Sissoko called Cordes Anciennes first brought this rich acoustic music of Mali to the world. More than 20 years later, their sons, the now world-famous Toumani Diabate and the junior Ballake Sissoko, have come together to pay tribute to their fathers with 1999's New Ancient Strings. While many of the songs come from the original repertoire, the music is all modern Mali. Toumani Diabate has toured the world as a soloist, as a member of fusion groups like Songhai (with flamenco fusionist Ketama), and he has incorporated subtle changes into his music that makes it a living affirmation of the strength of the ancient harp of Africa. Together Diabate and Sissoko explore their fathers' roots while traveling their own new routes. This is the first all-acoustic kora recording Diabate has done since his stunning Kaira, released more than 10 years prior to New Ancient Strings, and it shows a mature and forward-looking artist that would make the elder Diabate proud.
