Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul (10/2008)

Nearly 15 years since they first swaggered and sneered their way into the public consciousness, the Gallaghers still polarise opinion like no other. Mere mention of O*s*s in a blog prompts hundreds of posts, many asking why people are still interested. The answer is simple. As bona fide rock stars, no one else has come along and, as Rio Ferdinand would put it, 'taken up the mantelpiece'. Which leaves them slightly adrift and peerless. They remain, as Alan McGee said, 'too young to be the Stones and too old to be part of that whole Libertines thing'.

Last time out, Liam declared: 'I carry madness, everywhere I go', but of late, the rock'n'roll star seems somewhat tamed and sober, getting up at 6am to go running on Hampstead Heath before dropping off the kids at school. On Definitely Maybe, the young Gallagher sang about strawberries and cream and 'lassaagnnnya'. This month, he revealed his recipe for steaming salmon in soy sauce, and how the gastropub near his second home in Henley-on-Thames is owned by Antony Worrall Thompson. He still peppers most sentences with the F-word, but now also appears on The F Word, joking with Gordon Ramsay.

Noel, meanwhile, seems to be enjoying a second youth, appearing on Radio 1's breakfast show recently, evidently still drunk, having fallen out of a rock bar in Soho only an hour or so previously.

Their last album, 2005's Don't Believe the Truth, marked a long-awaited return to form and the basics that made us take notice all those years ago. This time around, Noel set out to write 'music that had more of a groove', which he has, but occasionally at the expense of the song. Since 2000's Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, Oasis have always come back with a no-nonsense call to arms - 'Go Let it Out', 'The Hindu Times', 'Lyla' - and there's no change here. Lead single 'The Shock of the Lightning' is a propulsive, heads-down rocker, full of those trademark non sequiturs Noel reaches for when there are many things he would like to say but doesn't know how. It's also one of the few obvious singles on the album.

Guitarist Gem Archer and bassist Andy Bell contribute a song each - the hypnotic 'To be Where There's Life' and the rockier 'The Nature of Reality' - but they do nothing to challenge Noel's title of The Chief when it comes to songwriting. If anyone is going to do that, it's now clear it's Liam, who has come a long way since 'Little James'. The other clear single is his 'I'm Outta Time', a Lennon-esque (shocker) piano-led ballad, showing his new, more reflective side as he reveals how he strives to 'give myself some peace of mind ... you know it's getting hard to fly'.

The Beatles influences are ever-present - from the 'Dear Prudence' guitar at the end of 'The Turning' to the 'Give Peace a Chance' clap and stomp of '(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady' - but they're now borrowing more freely from the canon: the dirty guitar on 'Waiting For the Rapture' from the Doors' 'Five to One', the Who on Liam's 'Ain't Got Nothin" and even, er, Pink Floyd on opener 'Bag it Up'. Overall, they have eschewed the immediacy, bolshiness and classic pop songs for slightly wider ranging influences, from drone to acid rock.

You could say that if Definitely Maybe was their Stone Roses, Dig Out Your Soul is their Second Coming. It won't win them any new fans, but those that believed the truth last time will dig this.

Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine is set to release the solo album, The Fabled City, September 30th, 2008 via Epic Records. The 11-song set is the anticipated follow up to the 2007 The Nightwatchman debut One Man Revolution. Now being billed as Tom Morello : The Nightwatchman, the album is the first release to bear the political and social activist's birth name. The Fabled City was produced by Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam) and features appearances by System Of A Down's Serj Tankian and Shooter Jennings.

In addition to his career as a critically acclaimed solo artist, Tom Morello is a founding member and guitarist of the rock bands Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave. The two bands are responsible for multiple Grammy Awards and a combined 30 million albums sold worldwide. Widely known for his unique voice as a master electric guitarist, his compositions as Tom Morello : The Nightwatchman have been primarily based around the acoustic guitar. However, as his Myspace page firmly states, “You don’t have to be loud, son, to be heavy as shit,” and the stories and sounds presented throughout the album showcases a depth and intelligence rarely heard in the modern musical climate surrounding it. With more complex electric arrangements than displayed on One Man Revolution, The Fabled City is the synthesis of his groundbreaking work as an innovative rock guitarist and revolutionary acoustic troubadour.

When describing The Fabled City, Morello stated "My goal was to capture the energy and emotion of The Nightwatchman live shows. There is a much more rocking quality to this record, solos and riffs, mixed with darker acoustic songs. I think my singing has come a long way as well. I had a lot of devastating losses of family and friends during the past two years and The Fabled City is a search for hope through music and confronting injustice."

In the spring of 2008, Morello launched The Justice Tour, a nationwide concert tour formed in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of The Human Rights Declaration. The tour, which featured performances from Perry Farrell, Slash, Dave Navarro, Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, Wayne Kramer of the MC5, Sen-Dog of Cypress Hill and more, visited cities with a day dedicated to a local charity and a rock show to benefit that charity at each stop. The tour performances were an extension of the periodic residency he has presided over for the past two years at the intimate Los Angeles, CA venue, Hotel Cafe, and included live performances of many songs from The Fabled City.

Recognized by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the "100 Greatest Guitar Players of All-Time (#26)," Morello is one of only two guitarists featured as a playable animated character in the overwhelmingly popular Activision video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

Tom Morello graduated from Harvard University with honors as a Political Science major and has been a widely recognized political activist throughout his career. In 2006, he was the recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award. Morello's family has been a constant source of political and social inspiration as his great-uncle, Jomo Kenyatta was the first president of Kenya, and his mother, Mary Morello, founded Parents for Rock and Rap, an anti-censorship counterweight to Tipper Gore's PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center). With System of A Down’s Serj Tankian, Morello formed Axis of Justice, an organization whose purpose is to bring together musicians, music fans, and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice and hosts it’s inspired radio show, The Axis of Justice Radio Network.

As a producer, Morello has worked with The Crystal Method, Anti-Flag, Puff Daddy, and many more. He has also scored compositions for major motion pictures such as the 2008 hit Iron Man (where he can also be seen as an actor), The Matrix, Collateral, Charlie's Angels, Talladega Nights, XXX: State of the Union and more.

If the raw rock of their previous eff ort (the excellent Convicts) was the perfect soundtrack to a hard drinkin’ and fightin’ night out on the town, Dilettantes’s broad brush strokes provide the ideal soundtrack for the perfect road trip. From the opening title track Tim Rogers reminds us what a wonderful lyricist (Dilettantes) he is, Russell Hopkinson and Andy Kent demonstrate how a great rhythm section should operate (Disappearing), Davey Lane skillfully displays how to add radiant piercing colour and subtle tones (Wankers) and You Am I once again illustrate what a bloody great rock band sounds like. As Rogers belts out on Frightfully Moderne- ‘You ain’t seen the best of us yet.’ Highly recommended. Buy this album.

One of Australia's most revered rock outfits You Am I are back with a brand new album, Dilettantes. Of course this poses the obvious question: what's a dilettante?
According to wordsmith and lead singer, Tim Rogers, the obscure term is a rather fitting album title.
'The meaning of the term has a duality - either referring to folks who dabble in appreciation of arts or culture, or those who have a deep love for works, or performers,' he said in a statement.
'I first loved the word after hearing Duke Ellington use it to describe the members of his consistently brilliant bands. More often than not the people who have left the deepest impressions on me have been those who have delicately bashed my ears with their love of music, art, literature, and with no airs and graces, more peanuts and beer.'
You Am I's eighth studio album sees the band collaborate with their long-term producer Greg Wales. This record was approached a little differently, with the band trying to second guess and explore the processes theyd usually rely on make an album.
EMI Music CEO John O'Donnell says the result is an album that 'is open and more varied and filled with all colours of the You Am I rainbow. It's a really great change-up after Convicts, neither better, now worse - just the perfect next step

Patty Griffin - Living With Ghosts (1996)

Patty Griffin's major-label debut was actually recorded as a demo cassette. A&M executives were so impressed with this raw display of talent that they snatched up the tape and threw it, unaltered, into the marketplace. Griffin recorded her songs exactly as she performed them live, armed with only her acoustic guitar and a voice that can rattle fences. While dozens of folk artists have attempted to bend the ear of the major labels by coating their acoustics with radio-friendly keyboards and drums, Griffin took the gutsy "band? I don't need no stinking band" approach. It's primarily a testament to her voice that A&M was so taken with her minimalism; as a guitarist, Griffin isn't much more than an energetic strummer. Her songwriting is only occasionally exceptional -- her word choices are as minimal as her arrangements, and her melodies are engaging but conventional. But she is nonetheless a striking and intriguing storyteller, because her tales of chronically lonely people are told with such passion. Griffin's Nashville-tinged warble has tremendous emotional range, one minute cracking with brittle vulnerability, the next minute blasting with passionate intensity. Occasionally it seems Griffin's demo engineers were unequipped to handle her vibrant transitions, setting the microphone level for a whisper then cringing as the speakers bristle and the needles slam into the red. Fred Eaglesmith - Tinderbox (2008)

Tinderbox is the new album by Fred Eaglesmith. He calls it alternative gospel (gospel for non-believers). It's full of backsliders and people living on the margins. It rocks and rolls with distortion and preachers and end times. It happens on dirt roads and in little clearings with snakes and fi eld workers and people driving away. People say it is the best album Fred has ever made. Though a decidedly grassroots artist in the thematic focus of his songs and how he pursues his career, playing some 180 shows a year across North America as well as Europe and Australia and releasing his own records under his cheekily-titled A Major Label imprint, Eaglesmith boasts an impact that far better known musical acts can only dream of.

The Little Ones - Morning Tide (10/2008)

MORNING Tide, the debut album from LA sunshine heroes The Little Ones, is a masterful little gem packed with shimmering feel-good hits.

If they had a mission statement, it would probably be to write songs that celebrate life, rather than angst and suffering. And that’s an impressive achievement given the difficult history of the band, which saw them dropped by former label Astralwerks just when they seem poised to break big (a mini-album Sing Song had already captured a lot of hearts and minds).

Having bided their time and regrouped, they appear to have come back even more defiantly determined to stick two fingers up to the doubters. And they deserve to as Morning Tide could be one of the feel-good hits of the summer; not saccharine and unrelentingly optimistic in the way that The Feeling and now Melee are, but rather joyous, beautiful and well-meaning.

The chiming melodies, ethereal-tinged vocals and unassuming lyrics speak for themselves; they not manipulative. When Edward Nolan Reyes talks of “just floating away” on a track like Waltz, you tend to want to take the journey with him.

Reyes, in particular, ensures that The Little Ones have a keen sense of their own identity. His voice will probably draw comparisons with the likes of The Magic Numbers and The Flaming Lips, but his not-quite-but-almost-falsetto style certainly gives the songs their own distinct sound.

Musically, they’re capable of appealing to anyone who’s been charmed by The Beach Boys, or who seek their musical kicks in the blissful music of bands like Nada Surf, Death Cab For Cutie or The Shins. And yes, they’re as good as any of those bands.

The album opens with title track and former single Morning Tide and immediately grabs your attention – the “do, do, do” opening and waltzing synths managing to combine shimmering indie-pop (a la Delays) with that Shins-like ability to generally enthrall.

Ordinary Song proves the opener was no mistake – and is anything but ordinary. A crowdpleaser that proclaims “I’d love to sing along with you”, as if to offer a rallying call to anyone listening in. By the time the “who oh”-ing begins, you’ll probably be taking Reyes’ advice and stretching those vocal chords.

The sweet guitar riffs continue unabated on the joyously melodic Boracay (a firm highlight), All Your Modern Boxes, which benefits from some tricky layering, and the slightly retro-leaning Tangerine Visions, which demonstrates their musical diversity.

But there’s not really a dud track on the LP. Everybody’s Up To Something dips into psychedelic territory, Waltz is an innocent charmer and Like A Spoke On A Wheel balances guitars and keyboards to effortlessly satisfying effect (complete with an imagination overload in the lyrics).

The best is arguably saved for last, though, in the form of the impossibly beautiful Farm Song – a mini masterpiece that slowly, intricately weaves its way into your heart and soul to ensure that The Little Ones have grown in stature to, quite probably, become your new favourite band. Don’t miss out!

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham will release his fifth solo album 'Gift of Screws' on September 15th on Reprise. The album is his first since 2006's acoustically focused 'Under The Skin'. Primarily recorded and self-produced at his home studio and on the road during the 'Under The Skin' tour, the album also features two songs co-produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance). Mixing the immediacy of the best of his contributions to Fleetwood Mac with experimental production flourishes, highlights of the set include 'Bel Air Rain', 'Time Precious Time', 'Underground, 'Love Runs Deeper' and 'Treason'. "You could certainly say this album is a distillation of a number periods of time, some false starts to make albums, certainly some songs that go back a number of years, that took a while to find a home here, combined with brand-new songs and a whole other outlook," explains Buckingham. "And the fact that there was a kind of tenacity and focus to want to bring all of this together in one place. The fact that as an artist I'm still, for better or worse, clinging to my idealism and to my sense that there is still yet much to be said. This is a culmination of that." "The first one was more of a boutique kind of album," he adds by way of comparing 'Under The Skin' with 'Gift of Screws'. "It's almost like the opening act and then the headline act in terms of the kind of approach. Here I'm bringing to bear many more aspects of what I can do - guitar solos, just rocking a lot more in addition to the other things. It does rock more! And they do seem to complement each other." The album also features the unmistakable sound of the Fleetwood Mac rhythm section, as John McVie and Mick Fleetwood contribute to several songs including the title-track and 'Wait For You'.

Patty Griffin - 1000 Kisses (2002)

Patty Griffin's third album, her first material to be released since 1998 (the absorption of her former label, A&M, in the Polygram-Universal merger left an album Griffin cut in 2000 in the vault, where it's sadly likely to stay), strikes a stylistic middle ground between the stark voice-and-guitar approach of her debut, Living with Ghosts, and the eclectic textures of Flaming Red. 1,000 Kisses was mostly recorded live in the studio with a small acoustic band, including Doug Lancio on guitar and mandolin, Brian Standefer on cello, Giles Reeves on vibraphone and percussion, and Michael Ramos on accordion; the feel of the performances is close and intimate, with the occasional cough or footfall audible in the background, and these sessions capture more than a bit of the cinéma vérité mood of Living with Ghosts. But if the album's production style is subtle, it's also a superb match for the material, and without forcing their hand, Griffin and the musicians can sway from the life-on-the-street swagger of "Chief" to the Latin romanticism of "Mil Besos" to the torchy late-night blues of "Tomorrow Night" without missing a step, finding a broad emotional spectrum in these low-key sessions. And while 1,000 Kisses finds Griffin blending covers in with her own compositions for the first time, she proves to be a first-rate interpretive singer (her version of Bruce Springsteen's "Stolen Car" actually improves on "the Boss"' original), and her own songs are splendid, especially the moving widow's lament "Making Pies" and the moody lead-off track "Rain." And regardless of who wrote the material, Griffin's voice -- a tower of strength capable of expressing remarkable emotional vulnerability -- remains a wonder to behold. 1,000 Kisses finds Patty Griffin at the top of her game, and one can only hope we don't have to wait four years for the follow-up. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Star Is Just a Sun creates an enveloping mood of whispered romantic drama, with an aching atmosphere that strongly recalls Mark Hollis' solo record. Endless soft layers of warm keyboard and organ sounds and reverbed guitar cradle each song. A heartbeat-like pulse comes to the forefront in "Love Is So Real," and continues into "Beauty King," the only tune with a driving drumbeat. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Ola Flottum occasionally sings falsetto, but always sings softly, enhancing the keen sense of intimacy that the White Birch create so beautifully, while leaving attention to the poetic (and English) lyrics optional for listeners.

After the People now human beings album, the white birch went in search of a wormhole. They were at the end of a musical dimension of their own making, and felt there had to be more. In the summer of 2000, the band holed up for three weeks in a cabin by the coast, by a short film festival, with a video player and a bunch of Hitchcock movies, and their entire studio equipment. It was three weeks of intense frustration, thrashing out and trashing of ideas, no recorded songs, and a lost band member. But some seeds were discovered, themes that were to grow into the songs Beauty king and Glow, the title of Donau movies. Some solemn, almost filmatic musical landscape, vaguely familiar: It was no mirage, it was the awaited new world coming into being. For two years, the band retreated into the studio with no concerts, no old songs, nothing but a broken marriage, a son born, and the intense work of carving out this unknown universe that was to be mixed, mastered and released this year, 2002, consisting of simple melodies with rich atmospheres, and an organic feel to the arrangements and productions - the album that was to be called Star is just a sun, the album you might have before you now.

Robert Manos is a New York based singer and musician who has collaborated on Techno, Drum and Bass and Deep House releases with Jesper Dahlbäck, Seba, Terry Lee Brown Junior, Paradox, Hugg and Pepp, John Dahlbäck, Charles Webster and Alexi Delano.

Robert Manos spent his early years in Germany, Kenya and Tanzania before moving to New York as a teenager. His musical background is shaped by many influences including 70's Soul, R&B, New Wave, Dancehall Reggae and Classical Music. He began recording bits and pieces on a 4 trk recorder using primarily drum machines,synths and electric bass and gradually began to add his voice to these recordings. Working as a bass player and background vocalist with various bands and projects, Robert began to develop his own style which can only be described as a mixture of everything he was exposed to, and as a way of trying to define the realities of living many lives in different worlds, the distance this can cause between people but also the sense of being connected to everything but at times lost to yourself.

In 2002, Robert began collaborating on projects with Jesper Dahlbäck and Sebastian Ahrenberg in Stockholm (Sweden), starting with the deep house track "My World". The first full album from Robert Manos called "Angel Road" was co-produced by Jesper Dahlbäck and Sebastian Ahrenberg as well and was recorded at Globe Studios in Stockholm. Additional recordings were done at Ingarö Studios (Sweden), in Budapest (Hungary) and a certain small apartment facing east high above 7th ave, New York (USA).

All Girl Summer Fun Band - Looking Into It (09/2008)

Looking Into It, the third full-length from Portland's All Girl Summer Fun Band, makes me miss the 1990s. I miss that era of unabashedly rocking women. I miss being inspired by those who banded together with other girls to prove that shrieking or shredding wasn't just the provenance of those with a Y chromosome. Mostly I miss that time when it felt like you didn't have to choose between being girly or gutteral, cutesy or combative. Don't get me wrong, it's not that those of the so-called gentler sex aren't making music anymore, it's that, primarily, they are doing so as melismatic divas, sex-kitten pop stars, solo folk artists, or frontwomen in a boys-club band-- all of which is fine, but nothing beats seeing a bunch of chicks with scruffy guitars, primitive beats, and catchy-as-all-hell melodies throttle through three-minute ditties without worrying about being lady-like, seductive, or serious. And with their new disc, All Girl Summer Fun Band have made me forget how long it's been since I'd heard such an act.

Though it has been five years since their last outing, AGSFB haven't changed much (save the loss of one member), which is strangely comforting. The now-trio-- the Thermals' Kathy Foster, former Softie Jen Sbragia, and Kim Baxter, who recorded and engineered this album-- is a musical democracy with each member contributing vocals, pitching in with the songwriting, and switching off instruments. Looking Into It isn't doing anything new-- it's another round of sugary girl-group harmonies layered over fuzzy punk basslines and lo-fi guitar riffs-- but its insistent, often cuddly pop is more sophisticated than these Girls' previous offerings. "Woo"-heavy album opener "Not the One for Me" sounds like the infectiously sweet and sassy songs by the faux band in the movie Josie and the Pussycats (that's no dis; Babyface wrote those!). And tracks like "Trajectory" and "Oh No" blend 1960s bubblegum melodies with delightfully sloppy do-it-yourself execution, adding edge to their sweetness while bleeding their punk influences of anything remotely aggressive.

With their gushy enthusiasm and chipper Lush vocals, AGSFB are at their best when blowing through their songs with freight-train velocity, bouncing along with their plucky bass throb and joyously wild drumming (as on "Everything I Need"). But keeping the album from being a one-note collection, their slower tracks-- "Rewind", Sbragia's ode to her deceased brother, and "Lost", a dreamy, mid-tempo gem with an acoustic foundation-- show off compositional maturity and dynamic diversity. And record closer "This Will Never End", which opens with a call-and-response section of stingingly harmonized "ah"s and the album's most incendiary (and surprisingly krautrock-inspired) riffs, shows off Baxter's steely guitar chops, reminding listeners that while AGSFB is often purposely messy, its three members can put on their virtuoso faces when necessary.

Despite my own nostalgia for the riot grrrl days, what I love most about Looking Into It is that it isn't pushing an agenda. AGSFB are just three women who want to rock out and not make a big deal about it. Their band name says it all: All Girl Summer Fun Band are proud to be a kick-ass all-female trio, but their main objective isn't to explore gender politics, it's just to have a sunny good time.

Rae Spoon was born on the Canadian prairies of the 80’s. In his early twenties he hit the road as one of the world’s only transgender country singers and toured Canada, Europe, Australia and the USA. When the obvious dangers and contradictions of this role caught up to him he hid in a small town in Eastern Germany for a winter. There he was inspired to write an album about his darker experiences of Canada and it’s highways.

superioryouareinferior is Rae’s fourth solo album, and his first in over two years. It was co-produced by Lorrie Matheson in his Calgary studio. Lyrically the album is his most revealing to date. His voice walks the highways from the Yukon to Newfoundland singing of whales that have gotten lost, the wolves in our imaginations, the Great Lakes, cabin fever, dancing with grizzlies, the psychology of a haunting ghost and the issues of ongoing colonialism.

Musically he traverses new territories from art folk, to indie-rock, to electronic/experimental and noise. Being in Europe influenced him to trade his banjo for a computer and his acoustic guitar for an electric. superioryouareinferior is an album of the times in that it doesn’t stick to one genre, but it retains Rae’s respect for well written songs and his folk music roots that keep him connected to his audience.

The Eric Morecambe of contemporary dance music (by which we mean he’s a genius, not that he wears glasses) returns to the long-playing record fray with his first studio album since the scrumptious “Trouser Jazz” and he’s sounding in finer fettle than ever. “Ninja Tuna” is an album that mixes up all of Andy Carthy’s favourite influences and turns them into a funny, unique, amiable and distinctively British sound which will start parties, destroy dancefloors and soundtrack your spring cleaning so successfully you’ll find yourself getting deep into that dusting.

From the soul-jazz of “Music Takes Me Up” (featuring the golden lungs of Alice Russell), through the cartoonish tail-swishing of “Donkey Ride”, on into the monstrous bass parps of “Whiplash,” past a superb cameo from Roots Manuva (“Nice Up The Function,”) and across the bit where the bass comes back and is Stronger And More Dangerous Than Ever (“Bang The Floor” with Danny Breaks), this is an album which just keeps on growing on you. Every tune has been roadtested at Scruff’s epic club nights and it shows on the disco-builder “Get On Down”, the muddy funkster “Hold On” (featuring Andreya Triana), the utterly massive “Give Up To Get” and a latino finale held together by “Kalimba” and the endearingly ramshackle “Stockport Canrival”.

Mr Scruff’s combination of taking his music very seriously while managing not to take himself too seriously has made him unique in British dance and has helped him forge a sound and philosophy in which drinking tea holds mythological status and where it’s always the music which gets you high. “Ninja Tuna” is his finest work to date, moving with all the power and grace of a fifty ton whale deep below the ocean, its cavernous belly packed with happy, partying potato people. Cod, it’s good.

The debut solo album from Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is a collection of beautiful songs inspired by his life in north-east Arnhem Land.

Blind from birth, Geoffrey is a former member of Yothu Yindi and also fronts his own group, The Saltwater Band.

The album was recorded in Melbourne then mixed and mastered in Darwin. It features Gurrumul's unique guitar method, as Saltwater Band-mate Michael Hohnen explains:

"He plays the guitar upside down – so it's a normal tuned guitar but he plays it backwards. This came about because there weren't left-handed guitars (in the community)".

Gurrumul is being hailed as an outstanding Australian album.
