Revolutionary Road - Soundtrack (By Thomas Newman) (2008)

slika

Revolutionary Road is a 2008 British/American drama film directed by Sam Mendes. The screenplay by Justin Haythe is based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Richard Yates. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 26, 2008.
Plot synopsis
Set in 1955, the plot focuses on the hopes and aspirations of self-assured Frank and April Wheeler, who forsake life in the city in order to raise their children in the Connecticut suburbs, where they see themselves as very different from their neighbors in the Revolutionary Hill Estates. April is an aspiring actress who yearns to move to Paris, while Frank copes with toiling away at a corporate job he despises by drinking too heavily and engaging in an affair with co-worker Maureen Grube in celebration of his 30th birthday. As the Wheelers try to free themselves from their dull existence, their marriage slowly dissolves into an endless cycle of bitter arguments and jealous recriminations while they struggle to maintain a facade of domestic bliss. Only John Givings, the clinically insane son of local realtor Helen and her husband Howard, is able to see what's simmering beneath their surface.

Gold - Soundtrack (By Elmer Bernstein) (1974)

slika

Gold was a 1974 thriller starring Roger Moore and Susannah York and directed by Peter R. Hunt. It was based on the novel Goldmine by Wilbur Smith. Moore plays Rod Slater, General Manager of a South African gold mine, who is instructed by his boss Steyner to break through an underground dyke into what he is told is a rich seam of gold. Meanwhile he falls in love with Steyner's wife Terry, played by York.
Plot
The film begins with a tunnel collapse at the Sonderditch mine, in a scene that establishes the courage of Slater and his chief miner, 'Big King', and the bond of trust between them. This is contrasted with the contempt with which some other white managers treat the black miners. It is soon revealed that the collapse was no accident, but part of a plan by a London-based criminal syndicate, which includes the mine-owner's son-in-law Manfred Steyner, to destroy the mine so that the syndicate members can profit from share-dealing. This will be done by drilling through a deep underground wall or 'dyke' which is all that prevents an adjacent reservoir of water from flooding the mine.

The mine's General Manager, an accomplice in the plot, was killed in the tunnel collapse. Steyner interviews Slater, who at this stage is Underground Manager, for the now vacant post of General Manager, although the mine owner has another candidate in mind. At this point, Slater first meets Steyner's wife Terry and is attracted to her, but she does not return his interest. However, Steyner arranges for them to meet again, in the hope that Terry will influence her father, the mine owner, in Slater's favour. The plan works, with two consequences: Slater becomes General Manager, and he and Terry start a love affair. Slater, unaware of the criminal plan, agrees to carry out the drilling but is cautious enough to plant a safety charge that will block the tunnel in case of a water leak. Steyner knows that Slater is having an affair with his wife, but allows it to continue because it will keep Slater away from the mine, so that the safety charge can be disabled without his knowledge.

While Slater and Terry are holidaying together, the final breach is made in the underground dyke and the mine begins to flood, trapping a thousand workers. Slater hears of the disaster on the radio news, and flies with Terry back to the mine. There is a tense scene in which Slater and Big King descend the mine, amidst rising flood waters, to repair the safety charge. They succeed, but only because Big King sacrifices his own life to detonate the charge, letting Slater escape. Meanwhile, Steyner is murdered by one of his accomplices after they hear on the radio that their plan has unravelled, the murderer also crashes and kills himself. This conveniently leaves Terry free to continue her relationship with Slater, as the film ends.

Gonzo-The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson - Soundtrack (2008)

slika

From Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney and producer Graydon
Carter comes a probing look into the uncanny life of national
treasure and gonzo journalism inventor Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. A
fast moving, wildly entertaining documentary with an iconic
soundtrack, the film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson's
life--his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell's
Angels, his near-successful bid for the office of sheriff in Aspen
in 1970, the notorious story behind the landmark Fear and Loathing
in Las Vegas, his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern's
1972 presidential campaign, and much more.

Plot
The life and times of Marie Ward, the founder of the Loretto Order of nuns, (aka the Institute of Mary) are examined in this religious biography that is filmed on locations related to her activities. The unusually devout and independent nun originally came from a Catholic family in Yorkshire and took her vows and training at St. Omer in France. An activist to the core, she spent time helping those in prison and started the Institute of Mary in 1606, with the idea of bringing other nuns out into society to help those in need. As she defends her Institute to two successive Popes, it is ultimately banned until 1707, a half-century after her death. This bio also examines other difficulties and trials that made her career a challenge, and ultimately undermined her health.

Short Circuit - Soundtrack (By David Shire) (1986)

slika

Short Circuit is a 1986 comedy science fiction film starring Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg and directed by John Badham. Fisher Stevens, Austin Pendleton, and G. W. Bailey co-star, with Tim Blaney providing the voice of robot "Number 5".

The story revolves around a sentient robot named "SAINT Number 5". The acronym SAINT stands for "Strategic Artificially Intelligent Nuclear Transport." The robot later takes the name "Johnny 5".

A sequel, Short Circuit 2, was released in 1988.
Plot
Number 5 is one of five prototype robots proposed for use by the U.S. military, although the scientist mainly responsible for creating them, Newton Graham Crosby, Ph.D. (Steve Guttenberg), is more interested in peaceful uses of their artificial intelligence, like playing musical instruments. A demonstration is under way in the grounds of the company that makes them and other robots, Nova Laboratories, in Damon, Washington. After a lightning storm shuts down the presentation of the prototypes, a power surge hits Number 5 while it is recharging and alters its program, causing a malfunction. An associated accident causes it to be taken outside company grounds and it wanders off, unable to communicate and not knowing where it is.

Number 5 ends up at the home of animal-lover Stephanie Speck (Ally Sheedy) in Astoria, Oregon, who initially thinks it's an extraterrestrial visitor, but then determines the robot to be built by Nova. After helping it satisfy its cravings for "input" (due to its malfunction), and explaining the nature of life and death to it, Stephanie and the robot realize the power surge has brought the robot to life; the robot subsequently gains a respect for life, rejecting the destructive nature of its military programming, as well as a fear of the disassembly that awaits it back at Nova, believing it to be akin to death.

After several narrow escapes from a troop of soldiers led by Nova's security head Captain Skroeder (G.W. Bailey), who disobeys orders from Nova head Howard Marner in his attempt to destroy the wayward robot, as well as from Stephanie's unscrupulous ex-boyfriend Frank, Stephanie and the robot finally convinces Newton of the robot's sentience, but are unfortunately cornered by the full weight of Nova's security and the army, who seemingly destroy the robot. Unbeknown to the soldiers, it was only a copy built by Number 5, and with the robot's "destruction", the project that spawned it is ruined and Skroeder is fired. Number 5 (who renames himself "Johnny 5" after hearing the song "Who's Johnny?" throughout the movie) leaves for Havre, Montana with Stephanie and Newton, who has quit his job after siding with the robot.

Psych-Out - Soundtrack (1968)

Psych-Out is a 1968 feature film about hippies, psychedelic music, and recreational drugs, produced and released by American International Pictures. Originally scripted as The Love Children, the title when tested caused people to think it was about bastards, so Samuel Z. Arkoff came up with the ultimate title based on a recent successful reissue of Psycho.

Director Richard Rush's cut came in at 101 minutes and was edited to 82 minutes by the producers. This version is the one released on DVD. For some reason, when HBO Video released the film on VHS, they used the 101 minute director's cut, probably unknowingly, as they did not mention it on the packaging.

Plot
Jenny (played by Susan Strasberg) is a deaf runaway who arrives in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, searching for her brother Steve. She encounters the aptly named Stoney (Jack Nicholson) and his hippie band "Mumblin' Jim" in a coffee shop. The boys are sympathetic, especially when they discover that she is deaf and can only understand others through lip reading. They hide her from the police and help her look for her brother. He has left his apartment with no forwarding address; she has only a postcard from him which reads "Jess Saes: God is alive and well and living in a sugar cube". Meanwhile, the boys are trying hard to improve their music and get more visibility, and are approached by a promoter who says he can arrange for them to perform at "the Ballroom", clearly the Avalon Ballroom or the Fillmore West.

The group discovers an artist friend, Warren (Henry Jaglom), the man who designs the psychedelic posters advertising the band, freaking out badly in his gallery, apparently on STP. He sees everyone, including himself, as walking dead and tries to cut off his own (to him festering) hand with a circular saw. While they help him, Jenny notices a large sculpture resembling abstract flames in a corner and recognizes it as her brother's work. The gallery owner says the artist is known as "The Seeker", a kind of itinerant preacher. He suggests that they ask ex-band member Dave (Dean Stockwell) about The Seeker's current whereabouts.

Dave lives in the attic of a downtown warehouse. He is less than thrilled to see Stoney, but sympathetic to Jenny. The audience learns that Dave left the band because he felt they were too concerned with worldly success and "games", rather than serious focus on music for its own sake. (Some fans have guessed that Dave and his conflict with the band are based on the real-life disputes between Neil Young and Buffalo Springfield. Stockwell's appearance strongly resembles Young's at this period, and the two were friends; Stockwell later appeared in one of Young's experimental films.)

Dave's information leads the gang to a junkyard, where the mystery of "Jess Saes" is revealed; it's a sign reading "Jesus Saves", with some letters missing. The "sugar cube" slogan is painted on the side of a car which Jenny recognizes as her brother's. However, a group of thugs who frequent the junkyard accost the group and reveal that they have it in for The Seeker, for reasons that are never fully explained except that they dislike his street preaching and his themes of love and peace (perhaps they are Vietnam War veterans). They threaten to rape Jenny. Violence ensues, and the group barely escape with their lives.

Stoney (Jack Nicholson) and Jenny (Susan Strasberg)Jenny's friendship with Stoney has become sexual (she does not know that he has a reputation for one-night stands and a refusal to commit to or care about any woman). She attends a mock funeral staged by a large group of hippies, with background music by The Seeds; the theme of their play is that death is not the end, and that love and a refusal to hurt others are what keep us alive. She stays with Stoney in a crowded old house, and finds that everyday hippie life is less than ideal. The residents are all involved in contemplation (with or without drugs), sex, sleeping, dancing, or decorating the place, but nobody cares enough to do any actual cleaning or maintenance. When Jenny tries to wash the mountain of dishes in the kitchen, she finds that the plumbing is broken, but everybody just continues dancing. Frustrated, she interrupts Stoney's band practice to inform him she is going to take a walk. He answers angrily that he has no leash on her. Dave, sitting quietly in the next room, overhears this, and is clearly distressed at the way Stoney treats Jenny. Later, Stoney goes out too, concerned in spite of himself. He ends up at the art gallery, where he hears breaking glass and slips inside to see what is happening.

The Seeker (Bruce Dern) has returned to the art gallery to pick up his sculpture. Challenged by Stoney, he pleads that the work should not be touched; it is actually not meant to be art, but a shrine. He believes that God spoke to him and asked him to create the piece. Told that Jenny is looking for him, he is glad, but he feels it would be best not to see her yet; he is on drugs and wants to be sober when they meet. He further explains that Jenny's deafness is pathological; their mother was cruelly abusive, and burned Jenny's beloved toys. Jenny was violently traumatized and apparently had a stroke; she was deaf from that moment.

The performance at the Ballroom is a success; Mumblin' Jim play, along with the Strawberry Alarm Clock. Steve the Seeker shows up, hoping to see Jenny, but the junkyard thugs are also present(????)and chase him back to his home. Steve runs right behind Jenny without her noticing, since she hears nothing. The group throws a party after the show. Dave appears and remonstrates Stoney over his ambition for commercial success, as well as his cavalier treatment of Jenny. When Stoney saunters off with another woman, Dave stays with Jenny to console her. She sees him put some STP in his fruit juice. He offers himself to her, but Stoney charges in and angrily shouts at Jenny, calling her a "bitch". Heartbroken, Jenny accepts Dave's glass of fruit juice and drinks nearly all of it.

She tells Dave she was only trying to find her brother, and Dave pulls a note from his pocket: "God is in the fire," and an address. Jenny runs out and takes a streetcar in hopes of meeting Steve. Later, Stoney looks for Jenny, and he rouses Dave, who is tripping on STP, to help find her. Half out of his mind, the Seeker attempts to enter his house, but the junkyard thugs pursue him; he eludes them and arrives in his room, where he lights a fire inside his shrine. Soon the entire house is ablaze. Jenny arrives to find a crowd gathering near the house; she runs in just in time to see him standing in the middle of the flames, absorbed in prayer; she calls to him and he sees her, but merely smiles and waves.

In her grief and confusion, she runs up to the roof, hallucinating wildly, and apparently jumps into a reservoir. The screen blacks out, and the audience next sees Jenny standing in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge, cars coming at her from both directions with their horns blaring. She has her hands over her ears, indicating perhaps that she has regained her hearing, although this is never explicitly stated. Dave and Stoney find her, and Dave, confused and impulsive from the potent psychedelic, runs onto the highway; he shoves her out of the way of an oncoming car and is struck and killed. As he dies, he murmurs that he hopes this, too, will be a good trip. Sickened and angry, Jenny tries to leave, but Stoney grabs her and pulls her into an embrace. The film ends with the two holding each other and crying, while an image of the mock funeral reappears.

Stranger That Kneels Beside The Shadow Of A Corpse - Soundtrack (By Lallo Gori) (1970)

slika

This peculiar spaghetti western from prolific director Demofilo Fidani (using the pseudonym "Miles Deem") deals with a man named Blonde (Chet Davis) tracking bounty hunter Lazar (Hunt Powers) to the mining town of Lamazos. The evil town boss, Barret (Gordon Mitchell), wants Lazar dead, so he sends a group of assassins to murder him. Lazar survives, and Barret ends up offering him $100,000 to leave town. Lazar accepts the money and travels on to a remote shack, where he tortures an old man (Ettore Manni), making him a slave. What Lazar doesn't know is that the old man is Blonde's father, and he pays for his mistake with his life, leaving the man and his gunslinging son rich after the obligatory showdown. Fidani's film is unusual in its almost hallucinatory lack of logic, creating a surreal effect aided by the cinematography of Aristide Massaccesi, who would go on to some notoriety as cult director "Joe D'Amato."

Cold Turkey - Soundtrack (By Randy Newman) (1971)

slika

Cold Turkey is a 1971 satirical comedy film. It stars a long list of comedic actors, several of whom are well-known to North American television audiences. The film was directed, co-produced and co-written by Norman Lear and is based on the novel I'm Giving Them Up for Good by Margaret and Neil Rau.

Cold Turkey features original music by Randy Newman including "He Gives Us All His Love", a sparsely-arranged ballad with gospel influence that serves as the film's theme song.

The film was made in 1969, but was shelved for two years by the distributor due to concerns about its box-office potential.
Plot
As part of a public relations and marketing strategy, a large tobacco company offers $25,000,000 (about $126,000,000 in 2007 dollars) to any town that can stop smoking for thirty days.

Rev. Clayton Brooks (Dick Van Dyke), a kindly minister, leads his community (population 4,006) to accept the challenge and strives to help them find the strength to succeed.

Wanting to see the townspeople fail, the tobacco company sends flunky Merwin Wren (Bob Newhart) to undermine their efforts by targeting the weaker-willed members of the community such as alcoholic Edgar Stopworth (Tom Poston), elderly Dr. Proctor (Barnard Hughes) and anxiety-ridden Mrs. Wappler (Jean Stapleton).

The attention of newscasters (Bob and Ray) turns the community's efforts into a matter of highly-publicized failure or success.

Bloody Avenger (Sangue Di Sbirro) - Soundtrack (By Alessandro Alessandroni) (1976)

slika

The music for SANGUE DI SBIRRO (directed by Alfonso Brescia, starring Jack Palance, George Eastman and Jenny Tamburi) was recorded on November 15th 1976 at the Orthophonic Recording Studio in Rome under the supervision of the supporting sound-engineer Sergio Marcotulli and for more than thirty years it remained "unheard", but thanks to the perfect state of conservation of the reels containing the original sessions, it is now possible to pay homage to one of the most prolific composers of the Italian cinema.

The credits, as requested by the director, call back to mind the known Theme from Shaft, giving voice to a kind of cover version, totally instrumental reread in a personal way. Sangue di Sbirro, rich of dramatic situations suggested by action, is framed around themes motivated by the bass and drums grooves, emphasized by an excellent wind section, on which solo instruments alternate each other in a free improvisation.

Starcrash - Soundtrack (By John Barry) (1979)

slika

Starcrash (original Italian title Scontri stellari oltre la terza dimensione, literally "stellar crash beyond the third dimension") is an Italian 1979 science fiction film, which was also released under the English title of The Adventures of Stella Star (in the US). The screenplay was written by Luigi Cozzi (pen name Lewis Coates) and Nat Wachsberger, and Cozzi also directed the film. The cast included Marjoe Gortner, Caroline Munro, Robert Tessier, Christopher Plummer, David Hasselhoff, Joe Spinell and Hamilton Camp. The music is by John Barry, who was a very popular composer at the time. He has to his credit several James Bond Films, King Kong and many other productions.

It was filmed in Technicolor with Dolby sound, and has a runtime of 94 minutes. The US release is 92 minutes, and received an MPAA rating of PG. The movie is generally regarded by critics as a campy B film with cheap special effects and a weak, derivative plot that some people find unintentionally humorous. It appeared a couple of years after Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and tries to re-mix the same elements, but without much success. It has been compared to Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Plot
The lead in this film is the sexy smuggler Stella Star (Munro) accompanied by her sidekick Akton (Gortner). They are being pursued by the Chief of the Galactic Police, Thor (Tessier) and the police robot Elle (Camp). After they are captured and sentenced to hard labor (with Star for some reason retaining her sexy garb in the prison camp), the galactic emperor (Plummer) commutes their sentences in return for their aid in tracking down a missing ship.

The ship in question was seeking the hideout of the bad guy, Count Zarth Arn (Spinell), who has developed a secret super-weapon. The vessel was also carrying the emperor's only son. Stella and companions set out on their search, traveling to several planets, including a world of Amazons, an ice planet where they are betrayed by Thor, and a world of Neanderthals where they discover a lifeboat from the lost ship. On the last, Stella is rescued by Simon (Hasselhoff), the Emperor's son. At the planet's core is Zarth Arn's secret base.

Much mayhem ensues. The emperor is defeated by Zarth, but Stella and the robot Elle manage to destroy the evil Count in his fist-shaped space fortress. Stella and Simon fall in love and the film ends.

Barefoot In The Park - Soundtrack (By Neal Hefti) (1967)

slika

Barefoot in the Park is a 1967 American comedy film.

Based on Neil Simon's 1963 play of the same title, it focuses on newlyweds Corie and Paul Bratter and their adventures living in a minuscule fifth-floor walk-up apartment in a Greenwich Village brownstone. Stuffed-shirt Paul is a hard-working young attorney just starting his practice, while spontaneous bride Corie is determined to create a romantic environment in one room with no heat, a hole in the skylight, and oddball neighbors.

The title refers to Paul's becoming drunk, throwing caution to the wind and running barefoot in Washington Square Park in response to his wife's repeated complaints about his sober and cautious demeanor.

The film's screenplay was written by Simon. Gene Saks directed Robert Redford, reprising his Broadway role of Paul, and Jane Fonda, who replaced the play's Elizabeth Ashley. Mildred Natwick reprises her stage role as the bride's mother, Charles Boyer is featured as the eccentric upstairs neighbor, and Herb Edelman reprises his stage role as a telephone installer. The lead female role had been offered to Natalie Wood who had already played opposite Robert Redford in two movies. Wood declined the offer because she wanted to take time off.

Corie (Jane Fonda) a free spirited young woman, and Paul Bratter (Robert Redford), an equally sensible man, are a recently married couple, who move into a fifth floor apartment in Greenwich Village (one of the ongoing jokes is the fact that everyone has to climb so many stairs to get to the apartment). Corie decorates the small, leaky apartment, turning it into a picturesque little home for the two. One of the many odd people living in the apartment building, the quirky Victor Velasco (Charles Boyer), befriends Corie, often even flirting with her. He lives in the attic of the building, once even climbing through the Bratter's apartment window to get to his. Victor helps Corie with the apartment, teaching her how to work the seemingly broken heating and plumbing.

Corie sets up a dinner date with herself, Paul, their new friend and neighbor Victor, and Corie's mother, Ethel Banks (Mildred Natwick) in a scheme to get Corie's mother to fall for Victor; Corie feels that her mother is lonely now that she lives alone and needs love. Victor takes them all to an Albanian restaurant on Staten Island where he knows the owner. There, the group drinks, and Corie and Victor get up to dance with the belly dancer, while Paul and Ethel watch in embarrassment and awe. Afterwards, Corie and Victor return to the apartment in high energy as Paul and Ethel drag themselves with fatigue. As Victor escorts Ethel outside, Corie and Paul begin an argument over their differences. Corie feels her adventurous spirit does not equal up to Paul's cautious demeanor. One of the examples she gives is that he would not go barefoot in the park with her one evening. His excuse was that it was freezing. Corie says she will kick Paul out and get a big dog to protect her from him. Paul says maybe it will finally allow her to have someone who will go barefoot in the park with her. They eventually go to sleep, Corie in their tiny bedroom and Paul sleeping on the couch under a hole in the skylight on a snowy February night.

The next day, Paul comes home with a fever, but Corie still insists she wants a divorce. The two spend an awkward time together in their apartment before Corie kicks Paul out. She then gets a call from her aunt, saying that Ethel did not come home. Scared, Corie begins to panic, but eventually finds out that her mother was at Victor's apartment. Apparently, while Victor was escorting her to her home in New Jersey the night prior, Ethel slipped on some ice, and Victor took her back to his apartment where they spent the night. Strangely, Ethel was wearing nothing but her undergarments and Victor's Japanese kimono. Fearing for what seemed obvious, it turned out that Victor had Ethel's dress drycleaned.

Meanwhile, drunk, Paul skips work and sits in Washington Square Park. With her mother's advice, Corie goes out searching for Paul and finds him, drunk and running shoeless and barefoot through the park. The once cautious Paul is now a fun loving drunk while cautious Corie chases after him in order to get him to sober up. Eventually, Paul says it's his apartment too and he's going back home. Corie follows. Back at the apartment, Paul, still fairly drunk, climbs onto the roof of the apartment. Scared he might fall, Corie begs him to come down while speaking to him through the hole in the glass ceiling. He says he will only come down if she repeats after him. He wants her to admit that her husband is a crazy drunk, when a few nights before she scolded him for being so cautious and practical even when he is drunk. Meanwhile, realizing where he is, Paul becomes scared after almost falling off the building. Corie tries to climb up onto the roof to help him down but Paul does not want her to leave him. Corie asks Paul to sing an Albanian folk song they had heard at the restaurant that Victor has taken them to. While he sings, Corie climbs up to the roof to help him down. A crowd of onlookers starts to gather in the street, watching along, including Corie's mother, Ethel, and her new love, Victor. When Corie reaches Paul, they kiss and climb back down as the crowd cheers on.
