Part of a family of well-respected musicians and instrument makers, Mahmoud Ghania has become one of foremost exponents Gnaoua ceremonial music (In the 16th century, the Gnaoua came to Morocco as slaves from Mali and Guinea). His main instrument is the guimbri, a deep-toned, three-string lute that usually is heard atop a chorus of metal clappers called krkbaks and the occasional bendir frame drum and ghaita horn. And while Ghania often plays in traditional Gnaoua settings, he has also contributed to hundreds of sessions by both Berber orchestras and pop contingents in Casablanca and Marrakesh. This 1999 recording finds Ghania performing six traditional Gnaoua pieces, including two mesmerizing long-players which open the disc. The album title is in reference to Ghania's birthplace and home, Essaouira; it's the Gnaoua people who reside there that he celebrates in this fine collection.

Moulay Ahmed Loukili first learned music from his father, then auditor free to the mosque Quaraouiyine university where he met his first teacher, Mohamed Berrada Zahi he teaches oud, and Mohamed Abdelkader Ayyoush Kourrish who initiate directory san'a on. But its true masters will Al-Brihi and Al-Mtiri, which will make also a tribute to his talent. Until 1936, Loukili is part of the orchestra Al-Brihi in Fez, then returned to Tangier where he founded the association al-fan Ikhwan (brothers of Art), which organizes concerts and provides musical education.
Professor at the Conservatory of Tetouan, Loukili opportunity to deepen his knowledge of repertoire supported san'a 'specific styles of Tetouan and Chefchaouen.
In 1952 he became head of the radio orchestra, a position he assured until his death at the end of 1988.
The style of Ahmed Loukili is characterized by precision dawr (poetic meter) and a perfect control of the use of taratin (empty syllables completing dawr), as well as his constant desire to correct the errors of language and grammar very common among the musicians. In a constant effort to research and analysis, he also promotes restoration of excavating san'a partially forgotten that he reconstructed the meter and melodic passages
Leaving students in the towns where he lived, Ahmed Loukili also made fans everywhere who are, quite rightly, for one of the greatest master of Arab music.
The preservation of documents concerning the safeguarding visual recordings are regarded as a cultural and artistic value priceless. A replay recordings in black and white 1960s and 70s are regarded as national cultural heritage in Morocco.

Matar Muhammad was born in 1939 in the Bekaa plain (Lebanon). He came from a family of Gypsies, wandering musicians from father to son. From the age of seven onwards, his father and elder brother initiated him into buzuq playing. He made his professional debut in the early sixties, through the BBC's Arab programmes, but he really became famous through the performances of "Arduna ila al-abad" during the Festival of Baalbek. After that, his reputation extended throughout the Arab world and beyond. Heir to an oral tradition, his inbred gifts allowed him to practice a truly sophisticated art in an empirical manner. His course has been that of an outstanding soloist and an imaginative improviser who nevertheless remained faithful to the spirit and theoretical principles of Arab music.

The issuing of these recordings, made during public performances at the Beirut Theater in 1972, is one of the last tributes to his art. Indeed, afflicted for several years by a partial paralysis which prevented him from playing his instrument, Matar Muhammad died prematurely on December 7th, 1995 while he was waiting for this last record to be released. Faithful to the spirit of his forebears, he has been making a point of transmitting this tradition to his young son who is nine years old.

Malhun (or Milhûn, in Arabic الملحون) meaning the melodic poem is a Moroccan music that borrows its modes from the Andalusian music. It is a kind of urban, sung poetry that comes from the exclusively masculine working-class milieu of craftsmen's guilds.

Origins
The melhun, originally a pure literary creation, emerged as a poetic art today known in Morocco under the name of qassida (meaning poem) (in Arabic القصيدة) or zajal (in Arabic الزجل). Combined with music, it quickly spread across the country where it acquired fame particularly among artisans.

Music
The qassida (laqsida in Moroccan dialect) of the melhun is based on two essential elements: the overtures preceding it and the parts of which it is composed. aqsâm (in Arabic الاقسام) verses sung solo interrupted by the harba refrain (meaning launch) (in Arabic الحربة). Harba, the origin of which goes back to the 16th century, is a refrain taken up between the verses by the sheddâda (group of singers and instrumentalist-singers)(in Arabic الشداشة). Another refrain called dridka in Arabic الدريدكة) is a simplified form of the harba, taking off from an accelerated rhythm to announce the end of a qassida

The qassida however preserved the division of the text in stanzas as in the Andalusian song: the verse (ghson meaning branch) can include from eight to sixteen verses, a short refrain or harba offers an alternation which makes it possible to break the monotony of the musical discourse of the Melhoun song. This gave rise to the sûruf, subsidiary procedures employed by singers to produce an even greater effect on the audience and above all to correct the rythm. Al-Maghrawi (16th 17th centuries) created from dân, a word that has no meaning, verses which were used as the basis for versewriting by Moroccan folk poets.

The meeting of oud master Hamza El Din and the adventurous audiophile label Waterlily Acoustics was something that simply had to happen. El Din's music, so thoughtful and often lulling, is tailor-made for the sonic sharpness that is the label's trademark. And the result doesn't disappoint. This might not be the classic that Escalay (The Water Wheel) or A Wish are, but it's still a gorgeous record, slow and meditative, with El Din's voice and oud washing over the listener like a large Nubian wave. Pieces like "Shortunga" are ideal for contemplation; the refreshing and far more upbeat "Hamayala" brings things up to speed for the finale. Lily of the Nile is a distinct change from El Din's previous disc, Muwashshah (which teamed him with some of his Japanese students), and a real return to his roots.

The gharnâti music of Morocco is the classical repertory of the Tlemcen tradition (Algeria). A tuneful music, which privileges the solo chanting and evokes the crazy nights in Albaicin.
Gharnati is a branch of the andalus classical style (it's named after the city of Granada). As you can clearly hear from this recording, it was borrowed from Algeria, and the Rabat version still shows signs of its origins in singing style and instrumentation. Splendid music, good documentation.

The musical life of Arabs in the pre-Islamic period was centred around the Qayna, singing-servants that combined their musical talents with the functions of cup-bearer and courtesan. The Qayna formed a social class of their own. They established themselves in major commercial centres, enabling them to easily make contacts with rich merchants. Their role was to distribute drink, singing and sensuality. Their art consisted not only of reciting verses from the great poets of the period, but also to sing them. This required a thorough command of language and a sound literary background.

From the point of view of the form and the substance, Qayna singing can be split into two genres: Sinad and Hazadj. Sinad deals with serious subjects such as dignity, praise, pride and gravity. It consists of long classical verses. Hazadj, on the other hand, is entertainment intended simply to amuse the listener. It consists of short classical verses accompanied by lutes, flutes or tambourines.
