Out Of Sight - Soundtrack (By David Holmes) (1998)

slika

Out of Sight is a 1998 Academy Award-nominated movie directed by Steven Soderbergh and based on the novel of the same name by Elmore Leonard. It was the first of several collaborations between Soderbergh and star George Clooney. The film was released on June 26, 1998. It was nominated for two Academy Awards (adapted screenplay and editing). It won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for best screenplay and the National Society of Film Critics awards for best film, screenplay, and director. It led to a spinoff TV series, Karen Sisco.
Plot
The story revolves around the relationship between a career bank robber, Jack Foley (George Clooney), and a U.S. Marshal, Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez). They are forced to share her car trunk during Foley's escape from a Florida prison. After he completes his getaway, Sisco chases Foley while he and his friends - his right-hand man, Buddy (Ving Rhames) and Glenn (Steve Zahn) - work their way north to Bloomfield Hills, a wealthy northern suburb of Detroit. There they plan to pay a visit to shady businessman Ripley (Albert Brooks), who foolishly bragged to them years before about a diamond stash at his mansion. But a vicious criminal (Don Cheadle) who also spent time in jail with Jack and Ripley, is planning on hitting up Ripley's mansion with his crew, consisting of (Keith Loneker) and (Isaiah Washington), as well. The question of whether Sisco is really pursuing Foley to arrest him or for love adds to "the fun" Foley claims they are having.

Undisputed is a 2002 action movie released through Miramax. The film starred and was co-produced by Wesley Snipes, directed by Walter Hill, and written by David Giler and Walter Hill, who is probably best known as the writer/director of 48 Hours and Streets of Fire, but had most recently directed Supernova. A Direct to video sequel without any of the original cast members Undisputed II: Last Man Standing was released in 2006.
Plot
In this film that is surely reminiscent of the real-life events of Mike Tyson and Desiree Washington, George "Iceman" Chambers (Rhames), the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the world, is convicted of rape and sentenced to prison; which turns his world upside down. Apparently, the warden allows a limited amount of boxing to take place at the prison, and an old-time con, Mendy Ripstein (Falk) arranges a fight between Chambers and the undisputed prison boxing champion, Monroe Hutchen (Snipes), who is the top ranked prison boxing champ 10 years running. Immediately there is bad blood with Chambers not wanting to be second to anyone which leads to a lunch room fight between the men. Ripstein, who is a true historian and lover of boxing, arranges worldwide betting on the big fight to see who is the real UNDISPUTED champ.

The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit - Soundtrack (By Bernard Herrmann) (1956)

slika

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, by Sloan Wilson, is a novel about the American search for purpose in world dominated by business. Tom and Betsy Rath share a struggle to find contentment in their hectic and material culture while several other characters fight essentially the same battle, but struggle in it for different reasons. In the end, it is a story of taking responsibility for one's own life. The book was largely autobiographical, drawing on Wilson's experiences as assistant director of the US national citizen commission for the public schools.

The novel was made into a movie in 1956, starring Gregory Peck and Jennifer Jones as Tom and Betsy Rath, with Fredric March and Lee J. Cobb and Marisa Pavan in supporting roles (March plays Tom Rath's boss, a character based on Roy Larsen, Wilson's boss at Time, Inc.). It was entered into the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.

The movie and book have become hugely popular, and the book continues to appear in the references of sociologists to America's discontented businessman. Bob Greene wrote, "The title of Sloan Wilson's best-selling novel became part of the American vernacular -- the book was a ground-breaking fictional look at conformity in the executive suite, and it was a piece of writing that helped the nation's business community start to examine the effects of its perceived stodginess and sameness."

In 2002, the book was returned to print in a new edition with a foreword by author Jonathan Franzen.
Plot summary
Tom and Betsy Rath live in a rundown house in Southport, Connecticut around 1955. They have three TV-addicted kids (two girls and boy) and have money problems. Tom is 33 years old, a Harvard graduate, and barely survived as an Army officer during World War II. He fought in both the European and Pacific combat theaters (an unlikely scenario, but it sets the stage for his wartime love affair). About the first third of the movie presents haunting flashbacks to the affair as well as his combat experiences — clearly the stuff of PTSD, viewers recognize today. His stay-at-home wife, who only knows Tom is somehow "changed" since the war, feels his job with a Manhattan charitable organization pays too little, and she and a fellow train commuter urge him to interview for a job at a New York-based television network.

Tom lands a public relations job working in a staff position for the top man at the network (Fredric March), an apparently affable empire-builder surrounded by politicking yes-men who is to propose the establishment of nationally improved mental health services to a group of physicians and offer to put his own prestige and network toward that end. The problem Tom has to solve is how the top network man can best present the proposal to the learned doctors so that the doctors will rise in unison after the speech and appoint the network top man to spearhead the campaign. Meanwhile, as a subtext to the various plot lines of this mid-1950s film the mental health theme frames the struggles of just about every character (including even the TV-addicted kids).

Hired on a six-month probationary basis, Tom reports to a humorless game-player who rejects five different drafts of the speech created by Tom and ends up substituting one of his own. Eventually, the top network guy and Tom agree that the approach approved so far is all wrong in that it casts the network guy as an ignoramus who is in no way qualified to spearhead the campaign. Tom's approach is much more sensible: offer to run political ads in favor of the establishment of government-funded mental health programs. It would be an offer the doctors could not refuse.

Sidebar plots include (1) an attempt by the caretaker of Tom's late grandmother to fraudulently inherit her home (where Tom and his family live) in place of Tom; (2) the estrangement of Tom's network boss from his wife and daughter, due to his years of workaholic absence (the daughter quits school to elope with an undesirable man); and (3) Tom's earlier adulterous behavior and his out-of-wedlock son who was conceived in Italy during the war at a time of great stress, who pops up years later as an issue in a letter from the boy's Italian mother seeking monetary support for the boy at a most inconvenient time. Betsy goes berserk on hearing of this secret, but eventually calms down and seems to "grow up" and finally understand mutual emotional support — not just mutual ambition — binding wife and husband.

In the end, seeing the example of how his boss's marriage and family life had been ruined by overwork, Tom wisely turns down a high-pressure traveling position in order to work normal hours and spend time with his family, which now can be a place of healing for its members and by implication also for the broader restless culture.

The Last House On The Left - Soundtrack (By John Murphy) (2009)

slika

slika

The Last House on the Left is a 2009 American horror film directed by Dennis Iliadis and written by Carl Ellsworth and Adam Alleca. It is a remake of the 1972 film of the same name, and stars Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, and Sara Paxton. The film follows the parents of Mari, who attempt to get revenge on a group of strangers that have taken shelter at their home, and whom they learn have shot their daughter and left her for dead. This film was released on March 13, 2009.
Plot
After settling their affairs, Emma (Monica Potter), John (Tony Goldwyn), and Mari Collingwood (Sara Paxton) head out on vacation to their lake house. Shortly after arriving, Mari borrows the family car and drives into town to spend time with her friend Paige (Martha MacIsaac). While Paige works the cash register at a local store, she and Mari meet Justin (Spencer Treat Clark), a teenager passing through the town who invites them both back to his hotel room to smoke some weed. While the three are hanging out in the hotel room, Krug (Garret Dillahunt), Justin’s father, Francis (Aaron Paul), Justin’s uncle, and Sadie (Riki Lindhome), Krug’s girlfriend, arrive.

Krug shows Justin a local newspaper that has Krug’s and Sadie’s pictures on the front page, and which explains how Sadie and Francis broke Krug out of police custody and killed the two officers that were transporting him. Believing it too risky to let Paige and Mari go, Krug kidnaps them and uses their vehicle to leave town. While Krug searches for the highway, Mari convinces him to take a road that leads him to her parent’s lake house; Mari then attempts to jump out of the vehicle, but the ensuing fight amongst all the passengers causes Krug to crash into a tree. Frustrated by Mari’s attempts to escape, Sadie and Francis proceed to beat Mari as she crawls away from the wreckage. Krug attempts to teach his son to "be a man" by forcing him to fondle Mari’s breasts. When Justin refuses Krug decides to rape Mari. Paige begins insulting him to get him to stop, which causes Krug to pause momentarily only to stab Paige in the stomach twice. As Mari watches Paige bleed to death she is raped by Krug. Afterward, Mari musters enough strength to escape the group and make it to the lake so that she can swim to safety. Before she can swim far enough Krug shoots her in the back, leaving her to bleed out in the lake.

A storm forces Krug and his gang to seek refuge with John and Emma, whose home is nearby. Justin realizes that they are Mari’s parents, and intentionally leaves a necklace Mari was wearing on the counter to alert them about their daughter. When John and Emma find Mari, barely alive, on their porch, along with the necklace from the counter, they realize that the people who did this to Mari are in their home. As they try and find the key to their boat, so that they can take Mari to the hospital, they decide to get revenge on those responsible. When Francis happens upon Mari’s body he is attacked and killed by John and Emma. When the couple go after Krug and Sadie they find Justin in possession of Krug’s gun; Justin gives the gun to John so he can kill Krug. Sadie awakens and interrupts John, allowing Krug the chance to escape the couple where he pieces together that they are Mari’s parents. After Emma shoots Sadie in the head, John runs after Krug. With a combined effort from Emma, John, and Justin, Krug is knocked unconscious. John paralyzes Krug from the neck down, and leaves him to die with his head in an active microwave; then he, Emma, Mari, and Justin take the boat to the local hospital.

Whalerider - Soundtrack (By Lisa Gerrard) (2003)

slika

slika

Whale Rider is a 2002 film directed by Niki Caro, based on the 1987 novel The Whale Rider by New Zealand Māori author Witi Ihimaera. The world premiere was on September 9, 2002, at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Plot
The movie's plot follows the story of Paikea Apirana ("Pai") at the age of 12 who is the only living child in the line of the tribe's chiefly succession because of the death of her twin brother and mother during childbirth. By tradition, the leader should be the first-born son — a direct patrilineal descendant of Paikea, the Whale Rider — he who rode atop a whale from Hawaiki. However, Pai is female and technically cannot inherit the leadership.

Pai's grandfather Koro Apirana, or Old Paka as his wife Nanny Flowers calls him (according to the book, this is an affectionate version of "old bugger"), the leader of the tribe, is initially angry at losing his grandson and being left with a "worthless" female. While he later does form an affectionate bond with his granddaughter, carrying her to school every day on his bicycle, he also resents her and blames her for many of the troubles facing the tribe. At one point Paikea decides to leave with her father because her grandfather is mistreating her. She finds that she cannot bear to leave the sea as the whale seems to be calling her back, tells her father to turn the car back and returns home. Pai's father refuses to assume traditional leadership; instead he moves to Germany to pursue a career as an artist. Pai herself is interested in the leadership, learning traditional songs and dances, but is given little encouragement from her grandfather. Pai feels that she can become the leader although there's no precedent for a woman to do so, and is determined to succeed.

Koro decides to form a cultural school for the village boys, hoping to find a new leader. He teaches the boys to use a taiaha (fighting stick). This is traditionally reserved for males. However, Nanny tells Pai that her second son, Pai's uncle, had won a taiaha tournament in his youth while he was still slim, so Pai secretly learns from him. She also secretly follows Koro's lessons. One of the students, Hemi, is also sympathetic towards her, but Koro is enraged when he finds out, particularly when she wins her taiha fight against Hemi. Koro's relationship with Pai erodes further when none of the boys succeed at the traditional task of recovering the rei putha (whale tooth) that he threw into the ocean — this mission would prove one of them worthy of becoming leader.

Pai, in an attempt to bridge the rift that has formed, invites Koro to be her guest of honour at a concert of Māori chants that her school is putting on. Unknown to all, she had won an inter-school speech contest with a touching dedication to Koro and the traditions of the village. However, Koro was late, and as he was walking to the school, he notices that numerous right whales are beached near Pai's home. The entire village attempts to coax and drag them back into the water, but all efforts prove unsuccessful; even a tractor doesn't help because the rope breaks. Koro sees it as a sign of his failure and despairs further. He admonishes Pai against touching the largest whale because "she has done enough damage" with her presumption. Also, the largest whale traditionally belongs to the legendary Paikea. But when Koro walks away, she climbs onto the back of the largest whale and coaxes it to re-enter the ocean. The whale leads the entire pod back into the sea; Paikea nearly drowns in the process. When she goes out to sea, Nanny Flowers (Koro's wife and Pai's grandmother) shows Koro the whale tooth which Pai had previously recovered. When Pai is found and brought to the hospital, Koro declares her the leader and asks her forgiveness. The film ends with the village, including Pai's father, uncle, and grandparents, celebrating her status as leader, as the finished canoe is hauled into the sea for its maiden voyage.

While the plot of the book is basically the same, it pays less attention specifically to Pai/Koro though, and mainly focuses from a perspective of narration by Rawiri; in the film, Pai herself is the narrator. It clearly expresses the deep resentment felt by her grandfather, and Pai's longing to gain his respect as the rift opens between them.

In a small Irish town, a postman delivers the wrong film for the monthly movie show at the village church. Instead of Charlton Heston's "The Ten Commandments," the projectionist shows the movie "10," starring Dudley Moore and a scantily clad Bo Derek. As a result, the single men of the town begin to fantasize about meeting exotic women and pen a communal letter to the Miami Herald to lure single female companions to join them at the town's annual St. Martha's Day Dance. As the men anxiously prepare themselves for the arrival of the American women they go to great lengths to make themselves more attarctive mates -- much to the bemusement of the women who run the village post office. After intercepting the letter before it ever left town, the female townfolk decide to teach their men a few lessons about courtship.

The Big Kahuna - Soundtrack (By Christopher Young) (1999)

slika

The Big Kahuna is a 2000 movie adapted from a play entitled Hospitality Suite, written by Roger Rueff, who also wrote the screenplay. John Swanbeck, the director, makes few attempts to lessen this film's resemblance to a stage performance: the majority of the movie takes place in a single hotel room, and nearly every single line of dialogue is spoken by one of the three actors.
Plot
Kevin Spacey plays Larry Mann, a relentlessly foul-mouthed cynic; Danny DeVito plays Phil Cooper, a world-weary average Joe; and Peter Facinelli is Bob Walker, a devout and earnest young Baptist. The three are in the industrial lubricant industry; Larry and Phil are marketing representatives and Bob is part of research and development. The three are attending a trade show where they expect to land a very important account, a rich businessman Larry refers to as The Big Kahuna. As the night progresses, Larry unleashes a torrent of scathingly funny witticisms, most directed at Bob, but finds himself relying on the newest member of the trio when their quarry invites Bob (and only Bob) to an exclusive party.

While Phil and Larry wait for Bob to bring them the news that could end their careers, they muse over the meaning of life. Bob finally returns and offers a bombshell: rather than try to sell their product, he has instead chosen to talk to the man with deep pockets about … religion. In the face of Larry's towering outrage, Bob stands fast for all that is pure and true. But Bob is unable to muster any reply at all when Phil quietly explains how he sees no difference at all between Bob's preaching and Larry's fast-talking.

Right At Your Door - Soundtrack (By Tomandandy) (2007)

Right at Your Door is a 2006 American thriller film about multiple dirty bombs detonated in Los Angeles, written and directed by Chris Gorak. It was first screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2006 where it was nominated for Cinematography Award and the Grand Jury Prize, but only won the former. The film was then acquired by Lions Gate for nearly $3 million for worldwide rights. In the UK it was marketed with the tagline "With a twist. You never See Coming". Right at Your Door was Chris Gorak's writing and directing debut.
Plot
The film is about Brad (Rory Cochrane), an out of work musician, and his wife Lexi (Mary McCormack}.
Brad soon discovers (via radio) a chemical explosion, or dirty bomb has taken place in the Los Angeles area.
What follows in the movie is a look into the theoretical local and federal response to such a chemical attack/dirty bomb scenario and how the average person would react to such a scenario.

Venom - Soundtrack (By Michael Kamen) (1981)

slika

When an international terrorist (Kinski) hatches a plot to kidnap a wealthy couple's child along with the family's maid (George) and chauffeur (Reed), it seems like the perfect crime. Unfortunately, it goes terribly wrong when, during the kidnapping, the boy's pet Black Mamba snake is let loose. Vicious and deadly, the snake soon has everyone in the house captive and begins killing them off one by one.

Twilight Zone-The Movie - Soundtrack (Expanded) (By Jerry Goldsmith) (1983)

slika

Twilight Zone: The Movie is a 1983 film produced by Steven Spielberg as a theatrical version of The Twilight Zone, a 1950s and 60s TV series created by Rod Serling. It starred Dan Aykroyd, Albert Brooks, Vic Morrow, Scatman Crothers, and John Lithgow. Burgess Meredith, who starred in several episodes of the original series, took on Serling's position as narrator, although unlike Serling he did not appear on screen, nor did he receive screen credit.

The film remade three classic episodes of the original series and included one original story. John Landis directed the prologue and the first segment, Spielberg directed the second, Joe Dante the third, and George Miller directed the final segment. The promotional song from this movie, Nights Are Forever, written by Jerry Goldsmith with lyricist John Bettis, and sung by Jennifer Warnes, is heard briefly during the jukebox scene in the opening segment with Vic Morrow.

The film is perhaps best known for the helicopter accident which took the lives of actor Vic Morrow and two illegally-hired child actors during the filming of Landis' segment. The deaths led to high-profile legal action, although in the subsequent trial no one was held criminally culpable for the accident.

A Countess From Hong Kong - Soundtrack (By Charles Chaplin) (1967)

slika

A Countess from Hong Kong is a 1967 comedy film and the last film directed by Charlie Chaplin. It was one of two films Chaplin directed in which he did not play a major role (the other was 1923's A Woman of Paris), and his only color film. Chaplin's cameo marked his final screen appearance. The movie starred Marlon Brando, Sophia Loren, Tippi Hedren, and Sydney Earle Chaplin, Chaplin's second son.

It was a financial and critical failure. However, the theme music, written by Chaplin, became the hit song "This Is My Song" for Petula Clark and made back the cost of the film.
Plot summary
Ambassador-designate to Saudi Arabia Ogden Mears (Marlon Brando) sails back to America after touring the world. He meets a Russian countess (Sophia Loren) in Hong Kong after she sneaks aboard to escape being forced into prostitution.

Whisper In The Dark - Soundtrack (By Thomas Newman) (1992)

slika

When the sadomasochistic sexual fantasies of a Manhattan psychiatrist's disturbed patient begin leaking into the troubled doctor's subconscious, a heated love affair leads to a series of shocking murders in this erotic thriller from Off Limits director Christopher Crowe. The confessions of a sexually obsessed patient are slowly working their way into the dreams of psychiatrist Ann Heckler (Annabella Sciorra), and though the practical advice of her university mentor, Dr. Leo Green (Alan Alda), does little to quell her erotic visions, a torrid affair with handsome pilot Doug McDowell (Jamey Sheridan) at least provides a satisfying momentary distraction. When one of Ann's patients is discovered murdered and all evidence suggests that her new lover is the culprit, Ann must make a choice to put her trust in Doug or escape with her life while she still can. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The Private Files Of J. Edgar Hoover - Soundtrack (By Miklos Rozsa) (1977)

Included soundtrack from Lydia (1941) and Crysis (1950)

slika

Plot
Larry Cohen's pseudo-biography of J. Edgar Hoover (Broderick Crawford) was virtually howled off the screens upon its release in 1977. Today, with the cross-dressing Hoover so much a matter of historical record that even Oliver Stone didn't bother to make too much of a point of it in Nixon, the Cohen film plays more like a dramatic re-enactment rather than the puerile paranoid fantasy it appeared to be at the time. Unfortunately, Cohen's method is part exploitation and part historical tableau. On the one hand, Cohen dramatizes historical moments in Hoover's momentous life story -- the shooting of John Dillinger in front of Chicago's Biograph Theater, his first arrest -- with a deadening solemnity (even abandoning the backlot facsimiles to shoot on the actual historical locations). On the other hand, Cohen relishes his scenes of Hoover's homosexuality and his propensity for sitting in the dark with a bottle of whiskey, replaying tapes of the amorous liaisons of high government officials -- the decadently homosexual Hoover built his political power base by getting all the dirt he could on the government's movers and shakers -- particularly their sexual liaisons -- and blackmailing them for their support when he could not get it in any other way. A true schizophrenic masterwork in its time, the film is now muted by a reality more incredible than Cohen ever imagined in his wildest dreams.

Eraser - Soundtrack (Complete) (By Alan Silvestri) (1996)

slika

slika

Eraser is a 1996 action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Vanessa Williams. It was directed by Chuck Russell. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Sound Effects Editing in 1996.
Plot
John "Eraser" Kruger (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a U.S. Marshal who works for the Federal Witness Security Protection Program (WITSEC). John is assigned to protect Dr. Lee Cullen (Vanessa L. Williams), a scientist who works for Cyrez Corporation, a company that creates and manufactures weapons for the military. Lee has come across plans in which Cyrez plans to sell a top secret electronic pulse rifle to terrorist Sergei Ivanovich Petrofsky (Olek Krupa). With its unparalleled firepower, the sale of such weapons to the wrong hands would tip over the balance of power.

The man behind the scheme, William Donahue (James Cromwell) wants Lee dead, because without Lee's testimony, there is no case against Cyrez. After Donahue commits suicide to escape punishment, John takes Lee to New York City to hide her, then John and his mentor, fellow marshal Robert Deguerin (James Caan), try to locate a witness. But Deguerin kills the witness they are looking for, indicating that Deguerin is Donahue's U.S. Marshal mole in the scam. Even Undersecretary of Defense Daniel Harper (Andy Romano) is in on it.

Deguerin kidnaps Lee, and with the help of Johnny Casteleone (Robert Pastorelli), a man whose life John once saved, John rescues Lee and prevents the railgun shipment. After a hearing for Deguerin and his fellow conspirators a few weeks later, and with the implication that under civil law jurisdiction a conviction and sentence of the culprits will not be possible, John eliminates Deguerin and the conspirators, "erasing" them thoroughly in an arranged train accident.
