Press Release :
On the crest of a burgeoning worldwide wave of interest in the lesser-tapped sources of music from the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa, Quantic and his new band, the Combo Bárbaro, are leading the charge. The stunning album, 'Tradition In Transition' (out on Tru Thoughts in July), and upcoming live tour of selected spots in Europe and America throughout August and September, will see this international cast of acclaimed musical creators fusing those rediscovered psychedelic, experimental and rhythmically rich sounds of the past with deep funk and soul elements, giving life to an explosive sonic snapshot of the eclectic and ever-evolving musical landscape of the Americas.

In 2007 Will 'Quantic' Holland moved to Cali, Colombia's third largest city, to pursue his passion for both unearthing lost treasures from Colombia's musical past and making new music with the golden array of talent available today. As a travelling music maker/DJ, continually searching for unconventional destinations to both find and showcase his music, Holland found it to be a rewarding move, and Colombia was to prove a perfect home-base to fuel his remarkably prolific creativity.

Since he settled in Cali, Holland has set up an analogue studio and recorded and released two albums (2007's highly lauded 'Tropidelico' by The Quantic Soul Orchestra; and the debut from his tropical-dub side project Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno, in 2008) featuring some of the cream of Cali musicianship. Upon realising the potency and sheer depth of quality present in these players, Holland assembled his Combo Bárbaro (literally translating as 'group of barbarians or people from outside Europe') to take up the baton from The Quantic Soul Orchestra in the realisation of the next phase of his musical vision.

The stellar array of musicians at the core of the Combo Bárbaro are: pianist Alfredo Linares, who wowed the sell-out crowds with his virtuoso performances on The Quantic Soul Orchestra's 2008 tour; Freddy Colorado, the energetic, charismatic cornerstone of the Cali music circuit, on congas; Fernando Silva on baby bass; William Holland himself on electric guitar; and London-based drummer and long time Quantic collaborator Malcolm Catto, also well known for his own band The Heliocentrics, in fine form.

'Tradition In Transition' also benefits incalculably from the talents of veteran Brazilian writer, arranger and musical innovator Arthur Verocai, who scored and directed a 12 piece string section on several themes. Legendary Panamanian soul singer Kabir lends his rich vocal tones to two tracks; Indian-born singer Falu, now based in the USA, brings her beguiling mix of North Indian Classical and rock-influenced vocal styles; and Pacific folklore singer and award-winning songwriter Nidia Góngora contributes her beautiful song "Un Canto A Mi Tierra".

In crafting the sound of Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, Holland felt it was imperative to have the core stable of musicians in the same room, creating an organic dialogue between them – a simple rule which, in an age of drum machines, samples and voice correction, is all too often overlooked. People will be instinctively drawn time and again to revisit the music made in this traditional, substantial way, undoubtedly because strange, unexpected things take place, musicians improvise and exciting musical statements are made, and this was the environment needed for the recording of 'Tradition In Transition'.

The result is a multi-cultural patchwork – a record bathed but not exclusively rooted in Colombian musical culture, embracing the musical range of all the American continent – honouring and utilising its contributors' individual backgrounds while conjuring up a unique brand of contemporary music that is a joy and a celebration to listen to, and a live experience that defies comparison.

Carrie Rodriguez - She Ain't Me (2008)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/254596073/CR-SAM.rar

Carrie Rodriguez’s follow up to her well-received debut Seven Angels On A Bicycle finds her stepping away from her country roots and moving towards pop and rock.

Three years on, Rodriguez has exchanged her cowboy boots for a pair of expensive high heels and substituted long-time collaborator Chip Taylor for Daniel Lanois protégé, producer Malcolm Burn.

Responsible in part or whole for 10 of the 11 featured tracks, Rodriguez sets her stall out with confidence, the surrounding frame owing much to the country twang of her electric fiddle (Absence), the guest vocals of Lucinda Williams (Mask of Moses), the evocative pedal and lap steel guitar of Greg Leisz, and the Hammond B-3 of multi-instrumentalist Burn, not least on the infectiously catchy title track and lead single, She Ain’t Me.

Despite the pop pretensions, there’s little else on She Ain’t Me that sounds like it is chart-bound material, but don’t let that put you off: Rodriguez casts an alluring spell throughout. Where El Salvador sounds like Suzanne Vega at a hoedown, Rag Doll proves a haunting tale of love in the face of adversity, Let Me In is a pleading entreaty edged with a dark-hued intensity, and Infinite Night a gloriously slow building anthem.
She Ain’t Me is simple, direct and honest.

Carrie Rodriguez - Seven Angels on a Bicycle (2006)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/254607177/CR-SAOAB.rar

Although this is officially singer/fiddler Carrie Rodriguez's solo debut, her musical mentor Chip Taylor--with whom she has recorded three previous discs of duets--is an integral ingredient. Taylor wrote or co-wrote all but one track and is also the album's producer. With Seven Angels on a Bicycle, the partnership that worked so well on Red Dog Tracks, The Trouble With Humans, and Let's Leave This Town has yielded another winner. The songs shift between folk, country, and even jazz, the latter aided by the amazing Bill Frisell, whose delicate, restrained textures and effects create an introspective mood as much as Rodriguez's lovely, sensitive voice. Much of this atmospheric release floats by with barely-there percussion, haunting tunes, and a languid yet exquisite sense of subtlety rare in contemporary music. Rodriguez goes into hoedown mode only once--on the frisky "Never Going to Be Your Bride"--but her fiddle colors these songs in muted shades that perfectly enhance their emotional concerns. She's a stirring singer--somewhat like Suzanne Vega--whose vocal innocence in tracks like "This Kiss" provides a perfect counterpoint for lyrics predominantly concerned with lost love and lovers. This is a stark, beautiful set of pensive songs that results in a low-key jewel of an album made for listening, not dancing. The talented Rodriguez needs no further proof that she is very much ready for prime time. --Hal Horowitz

Sarah Blasko - As Day Follows Night (07/2009)

http://rapidshare.com/files/254918756/SBbdCB_Vic.zip

The past couple of years have been a period of exponential growth for Sarah Blasko. Just as her second full-length album What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have was a massive step forward from debut The Overture and the Underscore, album number three As Day Follows Night showcases her rapid and ongoing development as a songwriter and performer.

Recorded in Stockholm with producer Björn Yttling (known to the world as one third of Peter, Björn and John), As Day Becomes Night sees Blasko step outside her comfort zone, utilising a new sonic palette drenched in jazz-influenced percussion and double bass and augmented by little more than the occasional flourish of piano or strings. Guitar figures very slightly here: it’s only notable appearance is the flamenco-esque acoustic that drives the heartbreaking ‘Is My Baby Yours?’. The spaciousness of the arrangements leaves plenty of room for Blasko’s voice, which is just as well, because it’s her best performance committed to tape yet.

Though there’s a distinct playfulness to tracks like ‘Hold On My Heart’ and ‘Over & Over’, As Day Becomes Night feels quite dark overall. The austerity of the instrumentation combined with Blasko’s intensely personal, deeply searching lyrics, make it much heavier going than either of its predecessors. That said, it’s not a gloomy album, or one that’s difficult album to digest. Opener ‘Down on Love’, with it’s almost Danny Elfman-esque arrangement for piano and strings, is a warm and welcoming invitation to the record, while the likes of ‘We Won’t Run’ and ‘I Never Knew’ are among the most affectingly gorgeous songs in Blasko’s oeuvre. But it is a challenging album, and one that’s full of (unfailingly pleasant) surprises.

This record reflects personal, as well as musical growth. Several lyrical themes repeat throughout, the most notable of which is the struggle to feel comfortable in one’s own skin. “Can’t please somebody else/Until you’ve learned to look after yourself,” Blasko sings on ‘Hold On My Heart’. The sentiment is echoed on first single ‘All I Want’: “All I want/Is to one day come to know myself.” Much more than lyrical rhetoric, it sums up the record’s strident confidence.

Though it feels at times like a risky album, there’s nothing tentative about it. Blasko has really pushed herself here, and the results speak for themselves. It might be her least instantly accessible record, but it possesses a timeless quality that makes specific reference points difficult to come by. All at once, it sounds as though it could have originated from any point in the past 50 years while still feeling entirely contemporary.

Sarah Blasko’s As Day Follows Night is out July 10 through Dew Process.

Chris Bathgate

Chris Bathgate is a prolific singer/songwriter whose stark, heartbroken songs (similar in tone to those of Will Oldham or Damien Jurado) earned him a strong local following throughout southeast Michigan. He grew up in Pecatonica, IL and started playing music when he was 16, putting in a couple years with a heavy metal band before going solo in 2001. Eventually relocating to Ann Arbor in order to attend the University of Michigan, Bathgate released his next single in 2002, Twilight Unlimited, and his second album, Create and Consume, the following year. It was at this point that he started playing with Michael Beauchamp and Karl Sturk in an old timey-tinged folk trio called the Ambitious Brothers. The group released a couple records, Ambitious Brothers I and Ambitious Brothers II, over the next few years, and disbanded in 2005 when Sturk moved to New York. In 2005 Bathgate worked with the short-lived Descent of the Holy Ghost Church, which included Beauchamp in addition to local indie musicians Jansen Swy, Matt Jones, Louis Dickinson, and Carol Gray. The group disbanded in 2006, after which Bathgate went on to release two albums and an EP, The Single Road I Long For, Throatsleep, and A Detailed Account of Three Dreams. He was picked up by Quite Scientific soon after, and his first release on that label, A Cork Tale Wake, arrived in the summer of 2007.

The Popes - Outlaw Heaven (featuring Shane MacGowan) [2009]

mp3 VBR V2 ~210kpbs | 90MB | 58:45 min
Chaos has surrounded The Popes, ever since Shane MacGowan created them as his backing band in 1994 after he’d been thrown out of The Pogues for "unprofessional” behaviour. They made a couple of studio albums with MacGowan in the Nineties before the singer wandered off into drink-sodden limbo. The Shane-less Popes then scored a critical triumph with their 2000 debut album, Holloway Boulevard, but since then fans have had only a live album and the reissue, Release The Beast, to sustain them.
But at last a second studio album is wrapped and ready to go. Outlaw Heaven is a stirring and cathartic collection of songs which run the gamut from punk to country, delivered by a new band assembled by original Pope-in-chief Paul “Mad Dog” McGuinness. The disc resonates with echoes of The Clash, Bo Diddley and a whole history of Irish balladry, but thanks to the influence of new collaborators Charlie Hoskins and Will Morrison, there’s a punchy experimental edge to it too.
Raw, for instance, is a ferocious bellow of rage lifted by a throbbing electronic groove, while McGuinness’ lurid tale of self-martyrdom in Crucified is buttressed by a sonic cathedral of crunching powerchords, gospel voices and horns. The title track’s exuberant singalong is led by Shane MacGowan himself, making one of three guest appearances on the album.

Alternative / Dark Country / Indie
This a very strange thing, can’t find anything on him besides his myspace.Who ever thought alt-country mixed with Nirvana could sound so good. Their name is The Mountain Apple Epidemic, their bio reads ‘Used to have a band that was on the harder side of things, Tool-ish, now I try to rip off Wovenhand’ and they are sublime. Like the soundtrack for a forgotten sequel to Deadman.

Old Man River - Good Morning (2007)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/255280149/OMRGM_Vic.zip

Fronted by Australian-born, Australian- and Israeli-raised Ohad Rein, Old Man River plays warm acoustic guitar-driven pop reminiscent of the Beatles, Beck, and fellow Aussie Ben Lee. Rein first picked up the instrument at age 13, and after serving in the Israeli Army, he moved to New York City, where he practiced his future trade by performing at local coffee shops and parks. After traveling around India for a year, the musician returned to Sydney, where he toured with Gelbison and formed the group Nations by the River with Gelbisoners Nadav and Edo Kahn and Luke Steele from the Sleepy Jackson. It was during this time spent with other bands that his own songs began to take shape, finding verses and melodies while in impromptu jam sessions. During one such experience the foundation of the song "Sunshine" was produced, and encouraged by a friend, Rein completed it and released as the title track on his 2004 EP under the name Old Man River. He then added bassist Liam Flanagan, background vocalist and guitarist Tanya Horo, and drummer Saul Smith to the mix, and in 2007, after tours in both the U.S. and Australia, Old Man River's debut full-length, Good Morning, came out. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide

Ronnie Earl - Living In The Light (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/255314240/RELItL_Vic.zip

This guitarist creates his most intense, emotional and passionate album to date

It's a simple question we ask of each other every day: "How are you?" And when Ronnie Earl answers "Fine, really fine," it's an indication that all is well with his world, and it means that our lives are greatly improved as well.
In standard music industry terms, Ronnie Earl is a bright and shining anomaly. He doesn't tour, he doesn't show up on David Letterman, he doesn't play at rock festivals, he rarely gives interviews, and he isn't the slightest bit interested in what Joni Mitchell called "the star-making machinery."
But he does make some remarkable, memorable and deeply touching recordings, and a wonderfully intimate DVD.
Like his other albums, Living in the Light is a varied mix of blues, soul and gospel, all marked by his distinctive guitar style and the passionate conviction he brings to every track.
It is also, perhaps in a contrary way, a record shot through with love, warmth and very real peace.

In today's supercharged and often cynical world, Earl's attitude to his life, and the way he wants to reach his listeners, may strike some as unusual, but it's the nature of the man.
"I see my music as a way to have a deeper relationship with God, and bring healing and love to the people who listen to it."
Ronnie Earl's searing, deeply felt guitar playing permeates every one of the dozen tracks on Living in the Light, but there are many other surprises and deep pleasures to be found. Nine of the dozen songs are originals, written or co-written by Earl.
Dave Keller, a singer and guitar player on the New England blues scene, sings two gospel-influenced songs - the powerful opener, "Love Love Love," and Bob Dylan's "What Can I Do for You," which also features a 10-voice choir from Earl's Baptist Church.
Kim Wilson, a dear friend, contributes three moving vocals and superbly realized harp parts to the new record. One of them is Robert Jr. Lockwood's classic "Take a Little Walk with Me;" another is a deeply personal song about the Holocaust, "Child of a Survivor."
"I'm Jewish, and my parents were survivors, and I never met my grandmother who was killed during the war. I wrote that song with Debbie Blanchard, my minister, and Kim Wilson put his stamp on it. Unusual for a blues record? "It's the deepest blues," he responds. "It's a story that needs to be told; future generations will all need to be reminded of what happened."
The contribution of Ronnie Earl's Broadcasters is obvious from the first note. Dave Limina's sterling work on Hammond B3 and piano provides a bedrock for the guitar playing, while drummer Lorne Entress and Jim Mouradian on bass are as solid and uplifting a rhythm section as can be imagined.

Ronnie Earl is a thoughtful, gentle man - not always the signature attitude of many blues artists - and it is simply not in him to want to sound either arrogant or glib.
"My greatest love in music is the blues; this is my 'mother music.' And I dig deep - I have no choice; playing, for me, is a very emotional experience. I put every particle of my soul into it.
He is not interested in guitar technicalities; he plays Stratocasters and Nash guitars, but always says that the person behind the guitars should always be of more interest than the instrument itself.
As for defining his style, he can't. "I'm just trying to get into peoples' souls," he says. "I'm just trying to reach peoples' humanity."
With his new record for Stony Plain, Living in the Light, he has done exactly that.

Jeff Zentner - The Dying Days of Summer

slika

"The Dying Days of Summer" features guest appearances by KatieJane Garside (Daisy Chainsaw, Queen Adreena, Ruby Throat), Andria Degens (Pantaleimon, Current 93), Matt Bauer, Jay Foote, Josie Little and Sara Zentner. "...Without fail, the lyrics read well in their own right as poems, and truly shine out when put to Zentner’s hypnotic, whispering vocals and dreamy arrangements. Beware though, this album does not make for easy listening. Zentner’s tales are tinged with black, and as beautiful as his prose is, there is a real underlying darkness that imparts a deliciously deep sense of unease. Conjuring images of desolate, rusty small towns, and compelling tales of human tragedy, love, and friendship, the listener is transported away into another world entirely." --Americana-UK "A disconcerting purveyor of caustic Americana, Jeff Zentner is an introspective young songwriter who conjures images of suburban desolation and despair through his dark lyricism and some stark, whispered vocals. Drawing on the bittersweet melancholy of Iron and Wine and the unsettling fragility of Mark Lanegan, Zentner sets about creating a hugely-affecting sound that echoes with desperation and a heart-breaking sense of youthful resignation. His debut album Hymns to the Darkness is a difficult, troubling but immensely rewarding listening experience. Alongside barren arrangements consisting of weeping lap steel and precision finger-picking, Zentner talks of forgotten, nameless towns, rusting industries and his frustrations at the dying heart of real world America. This is heart-wrenching, throat-drying melancholy that connects with the raw and primal fears of every intoxicated listener. Zentner is a truly breath-taking talent." --Fresh Deer Meat "Lush, haunting, and sparse are just a few of the words I'd use to describe the music of Jeff Zentner. This North Carolina native has the whole Leonard Cohen melancholy thing down to a science. His songs are so beautiful that you won't even mind if they make you a little depressed. Unless you're like me and love depressing music, then you'll be elated at how depressed they'll make you." --Triumphs and Tragedies "These are dark, melancholic country ballads here folks - and I can honestly say they hit the mark. While many want diversity in an album in order to get a feel for an artist, it can leave you unaware of the true sound or an identity in general. This is the case with Zentner as you will know from the first listen, that his sound is to provide beautifully bleak soundscapes of Americana goodness. Think of a somber Ryan Adams with less piano mixed with Steve Earle without the anger." --Slowcoustic "The wonderfully talented Jeff Zentner is back and better than ever with a new album “The Dying Days of Summer" . . . I’ve listened to the new album and it is definitely a stunner." --You Crazy Dreamers "Give this haunting, oddly disturbing enigma a listen. You may be a little depressed at first, but as you go along some pretty interesting and beautiful images will surround you." --Laughing Evergreens "...Reminding me of a more embellished Nick Drake and recent folk-lovey Fionn Regan, these are beautiful songs that also have a hint of Morrissey about their lyrics. They may be dark, but there’s something wonderfully uplifting about them." --The Line of Best Fit "given my propensity to tagging bands, songs, artists with such lazy and sophomoric labels as 'awesome,' 'killer,' 'lovely,' 'great,' 'most excellent,' etc it may seem that my vocabulary is quite limited, but you would only be half right. sometimes, even i get hung up and such trite phrases just ain't gonna cut it. such is the case with asheville native, jeff zentner and his recently released, the dying days of summer. i have been attempting to come up with something, for the past 4 days, that not only intelligently but emotionally conveys the tone of this record.

Yonlu-A Society in Which No Tear is Shed Is Inconceivably Mediocre (2009)

Until 2009, the music of Yonlu lived only in the virtual world on MySpace and on Luaka Bop's Three Inches of Music series. Yonlu was born Vinicius Gageiro Marques, and he hailed from Porto Alegre, Brazil. The difficult part of the story is that Yonlu was a very serious and sensitive young man who found life in this realm unbearable. He took his own life via carbon monoxide poisoning while signed on to a suicide forum on the internet, and remained online to the end, just 36 days before his 17th birthday, and after writing a long letter absolving his parents of any responsibility whatsoever. He left his parents a CD of his music before he died, but it was later, while going through his computer, that his father found most of the songs on A Society in Which No Tear Is Shed Is Inconceivably Mediocre. To his astonishment, he also discovered that Yonlu's music had made its way to many corners of the world and had been commented upon by various friends, DJs, and critics.

That's the myth, sad though it may be. The 14 songs that make up this collection are something else, however. They're infused with a freshness, innocence, and musical vision that is singular in scope and breadth. Yonlu's inspirations were myriad: they ranged from Radiohead and Elliott Smith to Gilberto Gil and the entire Tropicalia movement to classic bossa nova. Indeed, if this music can be called anything at all, it is 21st century bossa, infused by lo-fi and post-rock aesthetics. Yonlu was a musical and cultural polymath (he was an accomplished visual artist) whose sensitivity was matched only by his ability to realize his creativity. Check the tape manipulation skullduggery in "A Boy and a Tiger," where new acoustic, indie rock, samba, hip-hop, and spoken word all take their place in a mix that is dazzling in its reach yet utterly breezy in its space. "Humiliation" weaves together the tenderness of Caetano Veloso with the emotional pathos of Smith and Badly Drawn Boy. His cover of the Kings of Convenience's "Little Kids" is brief, but draws equally on shimmering bossa rhythms, overdubbed acoustic guitars, what sounds like a harp, and a rather complex bassline. Likewise his reading of the great gaucho artist Vitor Ramil's (another big influence on Yonlu) "Estrela Estrela," which is done reverentially and tenderly, carrying within it all the honest, open emotion of the original and adding intricately woven acoustic and nylon-string guitars. But the true wealth of this material lies in Yonlu's own songs. Of course it is tempting to read this through his tragic biography, but to do so would sell this music short. Check the primitive bossa meets futuristic MPB of "Ole Por Nos," with its delicately layered vocals, the messed up folktronica of "Q-Tip," or the glitchy edited loops on "Deskjet Remix with Sabrepulse," directed by the sounds of a charango. The set closes with "Waterfall," an utterly gorgeous and haunting folk song where layers upon layers of vocal harmony are chanted, sometimes in falsetto, sometimes in basso, and fall around an acoustic guitar treated with lacey reverb, sparse keyboards, and an atmosphere so thick its beauty is almost Baroque -- and all this before the rhythm loops kick in. It is as celebratory, innocent, and unremittingly beautiful as anything you are likely to ever hear. This may be the only recording we ever get to hear from Yonlu, but as such, it is a treasure trove of complexity, mystery, and redemptive art. Indeed, this is bedsit music elevated to the realm of high art.

The Flaming Lips - Embryonic [EP] (2009)

http://rapidshare.com/files/255630043/TFLEep_Vic.zip

American oddballs The Flaming Lips are set to surprise fans by offering them a free digital EP with ticket purchases on their forthcoming American tour.

The Flaming Lips are one of the most continually inventive bands of their generation. From their stage craft to their outfits to their music, the band continually shock and surprise their fans with their ground breaking imagination.

At a recent headline show at Scotland's RockNess festival the band emerged onstage in an enormous bubble, before rattling through a 'greatest hits' set to the clear delight of fans present. Taking time to thank them, Wayne Coyne then invited a group of Tellytubbies onstage with the band for a singalong finale.

However the group have not released new material since 2006's 'At War With The Mystics'. The Flaming Lips have instead been concentrating on their movie 'Christmas On Mars' which was finally released last year.

The band also released a soundtrack album, which contained some truly bizarre moments. The Flaming Lips revealed earlier this year that they were working on a double album, with singer Wayne Coyne insisting that it was almost ready to release.

With the group working on the final tracklisting and song titles, The Flaming Lips have decided to give fans a special preview by offering a free EP containing three entirely new songs.

All taken from forthcoming album 'Embryonic' the track names are - 'Convinced Of The Hex', 'The Impulse' and 'Silver Trembling Hands'.

Barnaby Bright - Wake The Hero (2009)

"Wake the Hero" is the drop-dead gorgeous debut release from Barnaby Bright. Fronted by husband and wife team Nathan and Rebecca Bliss (he the writer/arranger, she the voice of a Goddess), this Brooklyn based act is generating quite a buzz in the New York City scene.

Combining beautiful acoustic guitars, lush harmonies, rich string arrangements, quirky instruments and subtle electronic tweaks, the music of Barnaby Bright has been featured on television shows such as ER, Days of Our Lives, and PBS Roadtrip Nation. Their song, "If I Came Back as a Song" took 3rd place in last year's International Song-Writing Competition and they are currently planning their first European tour.

There is a transcendent thread in their lyrics, melodies and progressions that has an intangible but visceral timelessness and truth. The world has called and Barnaby Bright has answered. Their unique brand of "lush, chamber indie-folk" is a warm and welcome wind of change.
---
"Rebecca’s smooth, melodic vocals are reminiscent of Karen Carpenter or Shelby Flint...and Nathan’s incorporation of his jazz background into Garfunkel-y acoustic compositions bring diverse styles together to the folk in the road: a marriage of minds and hands and music."
-The Deli Magazine

"Nathan and Rebecca Bliss make up the sweetly melodic folk-ish duo Barnaby Bright, whose songs have soundtracked heavy emotional moments on Days of Our Lives and ER"
-Time Out New York

Vandaveer - Divide and Conquer (08/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/255655359/VanD_C_Vic.zip

Vandaveer will release Divide & Conquer through Supply and Demand Music on August 25, 2009. A national tour is slated for August, September and November 2009, with additional European touring in October 2009. Vandaveer will play with Bowerbirds and Megafaun on July 6, 2009 at The Black Cat in Washington, DC. VANDAVEER is the alt-folk song-singing/record making/globetrotting project penned and put forth by DC-by-way-of-Kentucky tunesmith Mark Charles Heidinger. The son of a preacher whose father was a gambler whose father was both judge and US congressman, Mark Charles one day found himself in possession of a golden pocket watch owned, wound, and regularly counseled by each in this paternal line. On the backside of said watch was a family name engraved, passed down for a century or more like the timepiece that followed. That name was Vandaveer.

Vandaveer’s debut album, Grace & Speed, a mostly live, stripped down affair, swiftly entered this great big dusty world in the spring of 2007. The press responded heartily, with The Washington Post saying Vandaveer “revives the earnestness of the pre-psychedelic 60’s,” and XM Cafe calling him “this generation’s Nick Drake.”

Touring continually on both sides of the Atlantic ever since, Vandaveer has played 250+ shows, sharing stages with a host of humbling artists including Bon Iver, Vetiver, Alela Diane, Alejandro Escovedo, Vashti Bunyan, Bill Callahan, Fleet Foxes, and the like. In addition to said Vandaveering, Mark Charles has been known to fraternize and conspire with other music-making hooligans, primarily as a bassist for fellow DCers These United States.

Vandaveer’s sophomore effort, Divide & Conquer, touches upon similar themes found in its elder sibling, winding timeworn themes of love & death, malice & goodwill, sin & perseverance into (mostly) four-minute vignettes. To see D&C through, Vandaveer enlisted the able assistance of longtime collaborator and producer Duane Lundy, brothers-in-arms/These United States bandmates Robby Cosenza and Justin Craig, and most notably, his fair sister Rose Guerin, supplying the loveliest harmonies this side of Eden. A decidedly more produced venture, D&C offers up a flourishing chamber folk companion to its bedroomy lo-fi folk/pop predecessor.

Released in France in April 2009 on AlterK/Discograph, Divide & Conquer was hailed by Rolling Stone as “jarring new folk”. The US release of Divide & Conquer is August 25th, 2009, on Supply And Demand Music.

Hugh Masekela - Phola (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/255358062/HuMaPh_Vic.zip

To get a rough bead on what South African trumpet icon Hugh Maswekela is about, it may help to think of the immortal "baby can you dig it" backing-vocal line from Friends of Distinction's version of "Grazin' in the Grass," the late-60s Philemon Hou-penned megahit whose first appearance was in instrumental form as interpreted by Maswekela (his fetish for sunshine-pop also threw open its raincoat in a roundly lauded cover of Fifth Dimension's "Up Up and Away").

Nowadays a board member at the Woyome Foundation (a concern that helps provide anti-retroviral drugs to HIV-infected children around the world), the 69-year-old notches his 35th self-led album in Phola, as much a tribute to his voice (Belafonte meets Bob Marley channeled by Louis Armstrong) as to his horn. If you happen to get out of the house on occasion, chances are good that you've encountered hastily thrown-together Afrobeaten jazz bands, but this is what it's supposed to sound like: vacation, pure and simple; upbeat, breezy, tropical and genial.

Even within the depressingly serious subject of his homeland, Maswekela finds a ray of hope, as "Bring It Back Home" evinces.

We Fell To Earth - We Fell To Earth (07/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/256088063/WFTEst_Vic.zip

A great year for pop and rock albums has seen less on offer on the atmospheric side of things, so We Fell to Earth are filling a hole in the market. A duo of former UNKLE man Richard File and sometime QOTSA collaborator Wendy Rae, their debut pitches haunting vocals against quietly insistent guitars, electronic pulses and kettle drums. It's not staggeringly original – there are echoes of Loop/Spacemen 3's guitar fire, Can's repetitive mantras, Ennio Morricone's spaghetti-western soundtracks and – unsurprisingly – UNKLE's War Stories, to which File contributed. But they are crafting their own identity with tunes strong enough to hold their own amid the dark sonic tapestries. Careful What You Wish For manages to make three piano notes sound eerie and unforgettable; the way Sunshadow suddenly shifts gear into a mesmeric chorus is one of the album's highlights. Embarking on so many adventures, it's understandable that they lose their way at times, but there is some marvellous stuff here.

THE HiGH PLANE DRiFTERS-Georgian Ghosts, Archer Street Blues & The Candy Factory

slika

The High Plane Drifters are Wesley Stephenson on Drums and Timothy Oxnard on vocals and guitar, they both come from Stockton on Tees in the north east of England. Wes has been playing drums since the age of 12, since then he has become a drummer of phenomenal power. Tim has also been playing his instrument since the age of 12 and has developed a unique playing style all of his own. They have been playing together for 5 years now and still are going from strength to strength.

Together they have inspired and excited audiences with their electrifying live set, betraying their audience’s ears with their full sound. Their recording output of two e.p's and an LP have sold around the globe. Although they have had interest from many major and minor record labels their LP was financed by the winnings of the PRS ATOM award, a nomination only award that they won, being only one of three winners in the UK, the only band from the north of England to do so.

They have also landed themselves a publishing deal in the states with Hunnypot publishing in Los Angeles who approached them to sign a deal; they join a staple of artists as diverse as Clutch, The Victorian English Gentlemen’s Club, Joan Jett and the Bloody Beetroots amongst others.

Their unique sound has been described as a two man musical explosion that patrols over half a century of blues and roll history & a two man band with a four man sound. The High Plane Drifters call themselves a psychedelic garage blues two piece, but it is often agreed that their sound displays a more varied influence than that, not being straight 3 chord garage wonders with a blues riff or two for good measure, but two men who actually think about what they are about and what they are doing.

They have toured all parts of the British Isles and are now set to tour Europe and the United States after invites from promoters there. They have played gigs with stateside bands such as the The Black Diamond Heavies, The Immortal Lee County Killers, The Soledad Brothers, The Hentchmen, Dooley Wilson who they also released a split e.p with, as well as acoustic artists such as Benjamin Wetherill and Serious Sam Barrett.

Shortly before he died John Peel was impressed enough to play their demo, and this was long before they released any records, they have also been played by Mark Lamarr on Radio 2, Vic Galloway on Radio 1, and good underground stations like Artrocker and Beatroot Radio, plus a host of other stations in America, Croatia, Portugal, France and Israel.

Considering this is a group that have achieved this with their self released records on their own label, and have largely organised their own tours with limited resources and hard work they remain optimistic, open minded and excited about the future and what it is to offer, and it seems right now that the world is ready to offer it a great deal more than obscurity.

The Whispertown 2000 - Swim (2008)

mp3 VBR~192kpbs | 51MB | 36:47 min.
Led by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Morgan Nagler, the Whispertown 2000 was an indie rock band that started out as a solo vehicle but developed into a full-fledged band around 2004. Nagler was moved to write and perform by friend and Rilo Kiley member Blake Sennett, who helped -- along with Jenny Lewis -- Nagler on her path to musical notoriety. The original pairing (that is to say, Nagler and Tod Adrian Wisenbaker), under the aforementioned original name, played their first show as an opener to Sennett's side project the Elected, and soon began working off their own momentum, changing names and adding members. The new four-piece edition of the Whispertown 2000 hit the road, and eventually released an album, 2006's Livin' in a Dream, which included contributions from Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett. 2008 would see the group build on their strong touring schedule with a new album, Swim. -- AMG

“Swim is the kind of record you wish people made more often: rural music played by suburban kids with an intuitive feel for the unruly punk heart of old-time country.” -- UNCUT

“Nagler sings of love, dope, and life/death’s positive/negative balance with Appalachian front-porch lonesomeness while garagey drums crash along and assorted guitars veer from bluegrasss breakdown to psychedelic echo and distortion.” -- MOJO

Whispertown 2000:
Morgan Nagler (vocals, guitar)
Tod Adrian Wisenbaker (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harp, piano, bass instrument, drum set, hand claps, background vocals)
