Centro-Matic - Fort Recovery (2006)

mp3 VBR~256kpbs | 85MB | Indie Rock, Alternative Country-Rock
Centro-Matic's Fort Recovery is what the magic hour -- that time just before the sun goes down when everything looks burnished and beautiful, but also a little sad -- would sound like if it were turned into music. Every song, from rousing rockers like "For New Starts" and "Take a Rake" to "Covered Up in Mines" and "I See Through You," positively radiates a bittersweet warmth. Over the band's decade-long existence, Centro-Matic's Will Johnson has built a reputation for being a wry, evocative writer, and titles like "The Refugees Have Won" and lyrics like "Patience for the Ride"'s "you can't touch the forces of our hurricane hearts" are a welcome reminder of why that is. Indeed, the main thing that's changed over the band's career is the sound quality of their albums. They've gone from below bare-bones recordings to detailed productions like the one that graces Fort Recovery. Centro-Matic sounds equally good in either setting, but the interesting drum sounds on "Take the Maps and Run" and the electronic flourishes sprinkled throughout the album make the most of the album's polish. They also make the most of staying in that fuzzy area between alt-country and indie rock; while that's not a particularly big territory, they've mastered it. With Centro-Matic, more of the same is definitely a good thing, and Fort Recovery shows that they just keep getting better at what they're doing. -- AMG

Tin Star Orphans-Yonder

slika

Ostensibly Yonder is Tin Star Orphans' debut CD, but the core of the band has been kicking around the Toronto scene for a few years, developing its alt-roots/art-rock sound under a different moniker and with some lineup changes. Yonder is nothing if not ambitious, opening with a swelling and churning six-minute instrumental highlighting the band's orchestral palette and proficiency of the players before introducing the arresting vocals of Zachary Bennett—a distinctive, punchy caw with which little else can compete unless it's mighty. Which probably explains the scale and structure that marks the music in Yonder: a thoroughly slick-ified and knowing pretension of hillbilly fare, crossbred with grandiose rock ornamentations and attitude. It's not at all bad—cohesive and deft, original and driving, and certainly hinting at a blistering live show—but reminiscent of how Spielberg would render a rough backwoods roadhouse: lovingly detailed, everything in place, but ultimately more about the reference than the real.

Honeyhoney - First Rodeo (2008)

mp3 VBR~192kpbs | 45MB | 34:04 min.
Biography:
Honeyhoney is the jazzy, twangy, rollicking collaboration between vocalist Suzanne Santo and guitarist Ben Jaffe. Prior to joining the duo, Jaffe recorded music for TV and film; he then met Santo (an actress whose resume included stints on Law & Order and Blind Justice) through a mutual friend, who took Jaffe to see one of Santo's solo gigs. The two began holding informal songwriting sessions and soon discovered a musical partnership. Adopting the name honeyhoney, they also discovered an early supporter in Keifer Sutherland, who signed the band to Ironworks Music, a label he co-owned with musician Jude Cole.
Honeyhoney made their studio debut by issuing the Loose Boots EP in early 2008; the musicians then hit the road with Lifehouse (another band on the Ironworks roster) while finding time to work on their debut album. First Rodeo was released later that year, featuring varied influences that ranged from crossover jazz to neo-soul to engaging alt-country.

Review:
Like Amy Winehouse fronting a jazz-influenced country band, Honeyhoney's debut is a diverse offering of twang, swagger, swing, and stomp. Vocalist Suzanne Santo sings with a neo-soul croon that owes as much to the saloon as the nightclub, cracking one minute and lapsing into an elegant vibrato the next. It's a voice that adapts itself well to other styles, from the boozy elegance of ballads like "Bouncing Ball" and "Sugarcane" to the throaty, Nashville-influenced strains of "Not for Long." Santo also handles violin and banjo duties, two instruments that help emphasize her band's homespun blues, while her partner Ben Jaffe tackles most everything else, playing piano and electric guitar while claiming the bulk of the songwriting credits. Several of First Rodeo's highlights previously appeared on the Loose Boots EP, which previewed the band's genre-bending experiments in early 2008. Of those songs, "Give Yourself to Me" and "Little Toy Gun" stand out as the duo's most energetic material; the latter song even finds room for firearm sound effects, mixing sensuality with the sort of sassy, '60s-styled camp that often peppers Quentin Tarantino movies. New offerings only sharpen the band's approach: "Come on Home" is a dirty duet before Santo's alto and Jaffe's Mississippi Delta riffage, "David" orchestrates a breakup note with tasteful strings and piano, and "Slow Brains" begins with old-timey banjo pluckings before making room for lush harmonies and keyboards. First Rodeo covers a good deal of ground, yet its appeal never suffers at the expense of its diversity, which makes for a truly promising debut. -- AMG

Curse Your Branches is the debut full-length album by David Bazan. Bazan's brand of storytelling, with its focus on ethics and relationships between friends and family, will be familiar to those who know his work as the frontman for Pedro the Lion and Headphones. His first solo release, the 2006 EP Fewer Moving Parts, revealed a musican at work as the EP contained two sets of the same five songs, one electric and one acoustic. Curse Your Branches is the culmination of all Bazan's songwriting since; the album contains the B-side to the 2008 single American Flags, "Please Baby Please," and songs that Bazan has performed live since 2007. Mixed and mastered by Bazan's longtime collaborator T.W. Walsh, who worked with Bazan on Pedro the Lion and formed half of the band Headphones, Curse Your Branches is Bazan's vision, and the first to be released under his own name.

The Greencards - Fascination (2009)

mp3 VBR~192kpbs | 56MB | 43:30 min.
The Greencards were beginning to stretch the boundaries of bluegrass and acoustic country on their third album, 2007's Viridian, and with their fourth set, Fascination, they've made it clear they're not going to let generic boundaries get in the way of their musical growth. The group's lineup hasn't changed, and they still play acoustic instruments exclusively, but Fascination features little that resembles traditional bluegrass. Instead, the Greencards adventurously try their hands at reggae ("Fascination"), lively uptempo pop ("The Avenue"), slinky jazz ("Three Four Time"), and atmospheric tone poems whose scope belies their status as a three-piece ("Into the Blue"). Even the tunes that bear the closest resemblance to traditional acoustic music find the trio putting a new spin on old sounds -- the simple but insistent percussion on "Rivertown" fuses a powerful energy to a melody in the classic style, and the wide dynamics and adventurous counterpoints of "Little Siam" suggest newgrass thrown into stylistic overdrive. One thing that thankfully hasn't changed is the remarkable skill of these three musicians and the magic that occurs when they play together; Carol Young's lead vocals are strong, heartfelt, and evocative (as is her bass playing), while Kym Warner's mandolins, bouzouki, and ukulele and Eamon McLoughlin's violin, viola, and cello reveal the gifts of a virtuoso and the imagination to do something fresh with their sounds. And the gentle but engaging beauty of the Greencards' earlier music certainly carries over to Fascination; if this album represents a brave step onto new ground, it also retains the beauty and soul of their best work, and while old fans will be pleased, it's easy to imagine some new ones will be drawn in as well. -- AMG

Freakwater - Thinking of You (2005)

mp3 VBR~192kpbs | 69 MB | 49:03 min.
Despite their alternative rock pedigree and their home on a label better known for experimental music, Freakwater was one of the most traditionally grounded bands on the alternative country scene. Singers/guitarists/songwriters Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Ann Irwin mix original material (with a contemporary lyrical perspective) and traditional covers, all done in a spare, acoustic country-folk style with close vocal harmonies. Their instrumentation often features string band staples like steel guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and dobro, and the strong Appalachian overtones that result have often drawn the duo comparisons to the Carter Family.

End Time was a major step for Freakwater, changing the sound of the band from its strictly acoustic origins without changing the feel of the band. Thinking of You takes another step in that evolution, but manages to achieve the same balancing act: a fuller sound that never abandons the past. This time out, producer Tim Rutili and the band enlist the other members of Califone to add to and expand the Freakwater sound, but it's still the sharp songwriting and vocal harmonies that carry the tunes. Freakwater albums are still the domain of the lovelorn and downtrodden, where alcohol is just about the only solace and circumstances are met with a weary acceptance just shy of hope and a dash of gallows humor, like in "Loserville": "where the bourbon flows like a river, so deep and still" or the "friend who tried to give me the good news, like solace candy found in pills and booze." Tales of loss and loneliness are the order of the day, perhaps most poignantly on "Cathy Ann," which isn't about Catherine Ann Irwin at all, but about one of Woody Guthrie's children who died following a fire caused by an electrical short. And unlike folks like the Carter Family, who turned to the Lord in times of need, religion offers no redemption in Freakwater songs ("Hi ho Silver, high on pills/Use your hands and tell me how I feel/Higher power, higher hand of mine/Tell me why your god is so divine"). There's even a nod toward the political (something new for Freakwater) in "Buckets of Oil," "where the winners and the losers, from sea to shining sea, have been bought and sold and most often have for free." The talented men of Califone provide sympathetic backing, adding everything from distorted bass clarinet to pump organ and tremolo guitar, but never get in the way of the songs. There's even some buzzing feedback guitar in one spot (the likes of which have never been heard on a Freakwater album before), but again, it never intrudes or takes the spotlight from the vocals or the song itself. The focus, however, is always those gorgeous aching vocal harmonies and the great set of all-original tunes. Freakwater might often sound like a band from another time, but their attitude couldn't be more contemporary, a dichotomy nicely summed up by the title and cover art, with "Thinking of You..." accompanied by a flaming bouquet of red roses. It's another excellent offering from Freakwater. -- AMG

The Impellers - Robot Legs(Freestyle Records 2009.)

slika

What is it about Brighton, England? How does this slightly faded Victorian seaside town manage to produce so much great, funky music and so many great bands? Is it something in the sea air or a diet of Brighton rock, toffee apples and candy floss? No matter, the results sure are sweet!

Hot on the heels of Brighton's' 'Baby Charles', The Impellers (formerly Ed Meme & The Forms) have already charmed the pants off of BBC radio presenters Craig Charles and Mark Lamarr with their biting, crisp and brass heavy funky soul.

This album 'Robot Legs' showcases these elements in addition to the sultry sound of vocalist 'Lady' Clair Witcher whose voice rides across the rhythms like a well greased surfboard on a treacle sea on several tracks but especially the up tempo dance floor smasher How Am I?

Impellers main man, organist Glenn Fallows says the most remarkable thing about The Impellers is that their rhythm section is much taller than average height, whilst their horn section is much shorter than average!!

Whilst he may have a point, what IS more remarkable is the very 'deep soul' feel that band imbue all their music with, even when taking Jimi Hendrix' rock monster 'Fire' 'cross the tracks to the funky side of town.

Percussionist/DJ/producer and author Snowboy lends a hard hand on the mighty fownkee 'Tastes Like Chicken' as well as kindly scribbling the albums sleeve notes. The Impellers are already lined up for this years' Beachdown Festival and Marlborough Jazz Festival so we recommend you check them out live and get your head around The Impellers brand new album. It's a biggie for sure!

A Place To Bury Strangers - Exploding Head

slika

A Place To Bury Strangers announced their sophomore album Exploding Head yesterday which comes out October 6 on Mute Records. Quite an appropriate title for this nu-gaze, shoe-gaze, whatever kinda of noise-pop experimental rock revival these kids are rediscovering these days.
You'll be sucked in and blown away by the paranoid android pop of the album's first single "In Your Heart," the gorgeous gate-crashing melodies of "Keep Slipping Away," the Chinese water torture chords of "Lost Feeling," the sputtering percussion of "Everything Always Goes Wrong," the apocalypse now effects of "Ego Death," the sinewy, slightly sinister overtones of the title track, and the firework finale flare-ups of "I Lived My Life To Stand in the Shadow of Your Heart." The collection makes up the band's most realized recording to date.

During the "Exploding Head" recording process engineer Andy Smith (Paul Simon, David Bowie) took the band to "a whole other level" says Ackermann. "I love the interplay and contrasts between something that's pretty and something that's scary," he explains. "Taking listeners to different places—even in one song—is so important, whether it makes them cry or pissed off. If you listen closely, some of the riffs on this record are actually like Ramones songs or '60s bubblegum pop."

Papa Mali's latest album documents his pre-Katrina New Orleans summit meeting with some of the city's most celebrated players (Henry Butler, Kirk Joseph, and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux) brought together with one request: Do your thing! More of a seance than a recording session, spirits weave through the air like curls of smoke, conjuring visions of snake handlers and tent revivals, spy boys and street parades, proceeding with a broke-leg swagger to a place that's less about being funky and more about being Southern. Other guests: Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indians, Victoria Williams, Chuck Prophet & JJ Grey (of Mofro). This enhanced CD also contains feature-length documentary video.

Rick Shea - Shelter Valley Blues (07/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/263115438/RSSVB_Vic.zip

Shelter Valley lies midway between the mountains and the badlands east of San Diego - hard, desolate, beautiful and remote. Shelter Valley Blues is the title track of Rick Shea's latest album, a stark look at the tough places we sometimes find ourselves and the price we pay to get there. The mood of the album swings from the hard country of the title track to the Irish-tinged folk of Ty Robby to the Rockpile meets Tex-Mex romp of Sweet Little Pocha. Shea covers a wide spectrum of styles with confidence and ease yet always maintains respect and reverence for the music that reflects a career playing at venues from dusty San Bernardino honky-tonks to Madison Square Garden.

LA Weekly called Shea 'staunchly independent' and said that he 'represents the best of California music.' His previous albums have been called 'dazzling' to 'stunningly good'. Over the years, Shea has released five critically acclaimed albums and worked with renowned artists such as roots rock kingpin Dave Alvin, folk chanteuse Katy Moffatt, and indie rock legends R.E.M.

Shea is a deeply evocative singer and a formidable guitarist. Recorded at his home studio outside Los Angeles, Shea plays acoustic, electric, steel guitar and mandolin and is joined by guests including Heather Myles, Moira Smiley and, from Los Lobos, David Hidalgo and Cougar Estrada.

"One of the most assured debut albums by a Melbourne singer-songwriter in recent memory, Jordie Lane's songwriting and voice are underpinned by a maturity that bellies his age. Lane, 25, promised much on last year's collaboration with Canadian songwriter Tracy McNeil under the moniker Fireside Bellows but here he delivers on all 13 songs. Co-produced by Jeff Lang and Tim Hall, a Vic Rocks recording grant enabled him to hire stellar local musicians to embellish the album with horns, Hammond organ and banjo. Lane is an old-fashioned storyteller. His raw and intimate yarns range from a cautionary tale in THe Publicans Daughter to a stunning, melancholy travelogue in Vietman in Walking That Way, which like many songs here, was inspired by his dreams. The stories have local flavour, featuring Clancy of the Overflow and a Northcote busket. His commanding voice recalls Loudon and Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Tweedy but it is his own and he always controls it. Exciting times from a vanguard of Melbourne singer songwriters that includes Downhills Home, Van Walker, Matt Joe Gow and Brendan Welch".

British electronic pioneer Luke Vibert has devoted virtually his entire career to shifting borders within electronic music. Now, true to his prolific nature, Vibert has announced that his third LP,“ We Hear You”, will be released in August on Planet Mu.

A trailblazer in the peculiar and odd, Vibert has maintained a sense of independence in the dance community with his many different guises: Wagon Christ, Amen Andrews, Kerrier District, Plug, The Ace of Clubs, Butler Kiev and Spac Hand Luke. Vibert’s last record “Rhythm” featured a downtempo, beats-oriented sound.

You can expect a return to the Vibert we all know and love. As he has described, “We Hear You” as a record full of "idiosyncratic samples, sweetly strange melodies, big bass and sloppy drums...connecting the dots between Terry Riley, dubstep bass and hip-hop".

Planet Mu will release Luke Vibert's “We Hear You” on August 10, 2009.

Alison Krauss - Essential Alison Krauss (2009)

mp3~185 Kbps Avg | 65.1 MB | 50:58 min

Essential Alison Krauss is a brand newinspired selection of songs [ut together by Alison herself, which displays her development as a vocalist, fiddle player and producer; from her early signing to Rounder Records at 14 years old, up to the present day. The tracks are drawn from her extensive back catalogue, truly representing Alison's commitment to Bluegrass and American traditional music styles, combined with her unique ability to contemporise the sound and take it to a very wide mainstream audience. She has a unique talent to select contemporary songs and sing them in a traditional style. It was these factors which drew Robert Plant into collaborating with Alison in the American roots world and the massive worldwide success of Raising Sand. What this collection proves more than anything is that Alison Kraus's music is timeless--her tracks from 1995 remaining as relevant today. -- Amazon

There are some people round these parts who would laugh at the title of this new compilation. Why? Because just about everything the bluegrass sensation has done in the last ten years has been essential. Let's face it, you don't win 26 Grammys in as many years by being average. Alison Krauss, for those of you living in not-so-blissful ignorance, is one of those rare things. A person who can restore your faith in music. Let us list the ways...

Eleven albums into a performing career that began at the age of ten, Krauss is probably best known for her contributions to the soundtrack for O Brother Where Art Thou?. But since 1987 (with her band Union Station) she's been pushing back the boundaries of what bluegrass means in the States while opening up the genre to new audiences with a combination of angelic singing, fiery fiddle playing and, not least, working with some of the greatest musicians in the business.

Essential pulls together a generous helping of her choicest moments from the last decade. This includes work from her most successful Union Station albums such as New Favorite and Lonely Runs Both Ways as well as solo material. Primarily a superb interpreter of other people's material, she can often take a poppy swerve that, on paper, seems odd but works beautifully. For a prime example listen to her take on the Foundations' Baby Now That I've Found You or When You Say Nothing At All, which somehow avoids schmaltz.

And to top it all there's material from her recent collaboration with Robert Plant (Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us). The T Bone Burnett-produced album Raising Sand showed the world that, just when we thought she was most at home when backed by Dan Tyminski's guitar or Jerry Douglas' Dobro, she could also summon swampy blues or reinvent the Everly Brothers. Yes, she's very, very talented.

If you've never heard Krauss in action this is a fine place to begin. But as we said, it's all essential. Do yourself a favour... -- BBC

Jordie Lane - Sleeping Patterns (2009)

Wow, great. Thanks. I was searching for this a couple of days ago without success. The Publican's Daughter is getting a lot of airplay here in Sydney, so I was interested to hear the rest of his work.

Left Lane Cruiser - All You Can Eat 2009.

slika

Left Lane Cruiser plays North Mississippi style blues like a lot of blues bands do these days, they just play it louder and harsher than anyone else, and that includes the North Mississippi AllStars. There’s nothing subtle or sophisticated about LLC. Their music lunges straight for your soul, and puts a stranglehold on it until you’re involuntarily rocking along. When I first heard them, I thought they were a three or four piece Southern band presenting a rawer version of the Black Crowes. Turns out, it’s just two guys from Fort Wayne, Indiana. But this ain’t no Black Keys. Joe Evans plays a righteous and riotous slide guitar with snarling lead vocals, while Brenn Beck plays a bass drum, cymbal, washboard, harmonica, and a homemade kit of various thingies to bang on. The dude is just a human multi-percussion machine. Their debut album Bring Yo’ Ass To The Table came out at the beginning of this year and the dozen originals sound like they were composed on a front porch in Tupelo with a Marshall amp set next to the rocking chair. Even when performing at some record store, their sound comes across big enough to fill a stadium.New album All You Can Eat out September 15th

Yet another project providing an outlet for the talents of eternally busy artist and musician Jon Langford (best known for his work with the Mekons and the Waco Brothers), the Pine Valley Cosmonauts were conceived by Langford as a vehicle for performing music written by others, with a membership that grows and shifts with the needs of each project, often featuring the cream of the Chicago alt-country and indie rock community. -- AMG

Jon Langford & the Pine Valley Cosmonauts - The Executioner's Last Songs (2002)

mp3 256kpbs | 118MB | 63:44 min.
It's a great idea, an album to benefit the Illinois Death Penalty Moratorium Project, and who better to execute it (pun intended) than the linchpin of the Chicago alt-country movement, Mekons and Waco Brother member Jon Langford? He's reassembled the occasional Pine Valley Cosmonauts to back a bunch of artists on tales of death, murder, and execution. There's everything from the traditional and gruesome ("Knoxville Girl" from Brett Sparks and a very powerful, gritty "Tom Dooley" by Steve Earle, as graphic as any gangsta rap) to straight-up country (Johnny Paycheck's "Pardon Me (I've Got Someone to Kill)," which these days stands almost as a parody of a country song, albeit a chilling one), all the way to standards (post-punk feminist icon Jenny Toomey on a lovely acoustic rendition of Cole Porter's "Miss Otis Regrets"), punk (the Adverts' "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" interpreted by Dean Schlabowske), and originals (Johnny Dowd's "Judgement Day," among others). It's an odd assemblage, but it hangs together very well, not just because of the thematic content, but also the intensity of the performances, like Edith Frost's luminous "Sing Me Back Home" or Dianne Izzo's raw take on "Oh Death." Apart from contributing guitar and some vocals throughout, Langford does get a couple of moments in the spotlight, duetting on the Dowd cut, then on "The Plans We Made," a tale of love gone awfully wrong that he sings with fellow Mekon Sally Timms. There's no bad cut here, although Tony Fitzpatrick's "Idiot Whistle" proselytizes a little too much, and "The Hangman's Song" from Christa Meyer and Tim Kelley of Puerto Muerto is just plain weird. But this album makes its points in very plain, blunt terms, and offers some excellent music along the way. If you still don't think music and politics can mix, start here. -- AMG

2. I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive - Rosie Flores

Jon Langford & the Pine Valley Cosmonauts - The Executioner's Last Songs Vol. 2 & 3 (2003)

mp3 256kpbs | 165MB | 90:31 min.
Jon Langford and the Pine Valley Cosmonauts' second collection of songs about murder, death, and dying — recorded to benefit the Illinois Coalition Against the Death Penalty and the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty — certainly ups the ante of ambition and diversity over The Executioner's Last Songs, and while Vol. 2 & 3 lacks some of the purity and concision of the first disc, the consistent quality of the performances certainly compensates. Where for the most part The Executioner's Last Songs sounded like the work of a single band with a number of different singers taking their turns at the mike, on the follow-up Langford, Steven Goulding, Tom Ray, Celine, and the various guest Cosmonauts on deck bend more to the style of their guests, which given the artists on board was perhaps inevitable. Mark Eitzel, Kevin Coyne, Kurt Wagner, and David Yow, to name but four of the artists teaming up with the PVC here, are simply the sort of performers who can't help but sound like themselves, and with more original songs and contemporary compositions on display, this two-CD set suggests less of a ramble through the morbid tributaries of Anglo-American traditional music than some sort of death-obsessed folk and pop festival, where the Grim Reaper is met with good cheer (Rhett Miller's "Dang Me"), snide wit (Pat Brennan's "Death Where Is Thy Sting"), fatalistic nostalgia (Dave Alvin's "Green Green Grass of Home"), or resigned regret (Otis Clay's "Banks of the Ohio"). All 27 tracks are worth hearing, and regardless of your stand on the death penalty, The Executioner's Last Songs, Vol. 2 & 3 boasts far too much good music from too many worthy artists for anyone with even a passing interest in roots music to pass up. -- AMG

HEALTH - Get Color 2009.

Disco punk band HEALTH are prepping the release of their second album Get Color, due September 8th on Lovepump United. According to Pitchfork, "Die Slow sounds like a party where Lightning Bolt's playing at one end of the room and Giorgio Moroder is studiously banging out psych-disco masterpieces at the other..." Can't wait! Oh, and the cover artwork is pretty killer too.

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Through The Devil Softly (2009)

Release Date: September 15, 2009 | mp3 VBR~224kpbs
It's been eight years since Hope Sandoval released an album with The Warm Inventions (and thirteen years if you Mazzy Star fans are counting). Since then, she's made sporadic appearances on songs from Vetiver, Bert Jansch, Richard X, Death In Vegas and Air, which has only added to the surprise surrounding the release of Through The Devil Softly'. Sandoval has once again teamed up with My Bloody Valentine drummer, Colm Ó Cíosóig, just as they did on 2001's Bavarian Fruit Bread, and if the first leaked song, "Blanchard," is any indication, the new album looks to continue much in the same abstract, swooning, folky vein. -- http://www.prefixmag.com/reviews/hope-sandoval-and-the-warm-inventions/through-the-devil-softly/30791/

Since the release of Mazzy Star s debut album She Hangs Brightly, Hope Sandoval has defined the sound and style of California psychedelic dream pop. The world took notice when the surprise breakthrough single, Fade Into You, hit the airwaves and heavy rotation at MTV. Sandoval s trademark vocals and beauty helped to make her a modern day music icon. Now the revered singer returns with her long awaited post-Mazzy Star sophomore album, Through The Devil Softly. Since her time with Mazzy Star, the sought after vocalist has collaborated with artists from across the musical landscape: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Air, Death in Vegas, The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack and Bert Jansch.
In 2001 she joined Colm Ó Cíosóig (of My Bloody Valentine), and backing Irish band Dirt Blue Gene, to form Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions, and released their debut Bavarian Fruit Bread. Now on Through The Devil Softly, the definitive star of the Paisley Underground scene reignites her trademark sound in an epic journey across the 11 song album. The project continues the laid-back, slowcore sound they are renowned for and places Sandoval s sensuous, hypnotic voice in the forefront. Recorded at home in Berkley, the spare, subtle arrangements reinforce Sandoval s gentle vocal style. <Amazon>

Joe Pernice -It Feels So Good When I Stop (08/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/265304133/JPIFSGWIS_Vic.zip

It Feels So Good When I Stop is a companion piece to Joe Pernice s debut novel It Feels So Good When I Stop. The book will be published August 6 by Riverhead Books, a division of Penguin. According to Pernice, ''Though the book is not explicitly about music, there are quite a few cover and fictional songs mentioned, so I thought it would be a cool idea for me to record some of those songs and release them, as a soundtrack album to the novel.''

The album is performed by Joe Pernice, Peyton Pinkerton, Mike Belitsky, Bob Pernice, with James Walbourne and Ric Menck.
----
About the Book

In the vein of Nick Hornby s High Fidelity, Pernice s debut is a coming-of-age tale for the modern-day slacker, and an unlikely love story with a masculine perspective but with a mordant humor and unexpected warmth that will resonate with male and female readers alike. Set to a carefully curated soundtrack of Nick Drake, The Pogues, and Peter Frampton, It Feels So Good When I Stop is the story of a deeply flawed but irrepressibly likeable hero stumbling towards adulthood, learning about heartbreak and redemption, and struggling to love and commit on his own terms.
-----
About Joe Pernice

Joe Pernice began his recording career in the mid-90 s with the Scud Mountain Boys, in Northampton, Massachusetts. They released two records before signing to Seattle s Sub Pop in 1996 and releasing Massachusetts, along with The Early Year, a compilation of the two pre-Sub Pop recordings. In 1997, he disbanded the Scuds to form Pernice Brothers, whose debut Overcome By Happiness was released by Sub Pop, as was Chappaquiddick Skyline, more of a Joe Pernice side project in 2000. Big Tobacco, a Joe Pernice solo record was released in Europe in 2000 (and later in the US). Later that year, Joe left Sub Pop and he and his longtime manager Joyce Linehan established Ashmont Records, based in Boston, where they have released several Pernice Brothers records: The World Won t End (2001) , Yours, Mine and Ours (2003), Nobody s Watching/Nobody s Listening live album and DVD (2004) Discover a Lovelier You (2005) and Live a Little (2006). Joe has also published a volume of poetry called Two Blind Pigeons and a novella for Continuum Books 33 1/3 series, Meat is Murder. His music has appeared in the movies Fever Pitch and Slaughterhouse Rules, the television shows Six Feet Under and The Gilmore Girls, and in television ads for Sherwin-Williams, Sears and Southern Comfort. A Massachusetts native, he now lives in Toronto. A new album of Pernice originals is planned for early 2010.

Holiday Shores - Columbus'd The Whim (2009)

slika

Summer is no myth. It exists year round on Holiday Shores Ct - a two-block stretch on the Florida panhandle where twenty-one year old Nathan Pemberton grew up. It's no more than five minutes from white sand beaches, squawks of seagulls, and wafting smells of suntan lotion.
Columbus'd the Whim is the first full-length album from Pemberton's Holiday Shores, who, like the street that bears their name, are quintessentially summer: chimey guitars, reverb-soaked vocals, warbling Rhodes, echoes of years past.
The album, packed with ten could-be singles, reads like a book of Pemberton's well-written memories. Each word chosen meaningfully with a linguist's touch; each sentence constructed carefully with an artist's ear. Columbus'd the Whim is a literary work in addition to a sonic one.
The band's current line up, comprised of friends and roommates, spent months recording together in Pemberton's living room, obsessing over vintage gear and perfecting their captivating hooks, heart-warming melodies, and creating a haunting tunnel of sound as a stunning backdrop.
