Last Embrace - Soundtrack (By Miklos Rozsa) (1979)

slika

slika

In 1979, Jonathan Demme was still a cutting-edge director and The Last Embrace was his first effort at a completely commercial assignment. Very much in the Hitchcock vein, The Last Embrace is an intense suspense film concerning Harry Hannan (Roy Scheider), a government agent recovering from a catatonic collapse after the murder of his wife. After Harry's recovery, he is back on the job, but he can't figure out whether he is suffering from self-induced paranoia or if his former employers want to kill him. These conflicting feelings are exacerbated when he forms a connection with a nervous graduate student, Ellie Fabian (Janet Margolin), whom he discovers is living in his apartment. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Jake Speed - Soundtrack (By Mark Snow) (1986)

slika

slika

Jake Speed is a 1986 action/comedy film directed by Andrew Lane, produced by Lane, Wayne Crawford (Lane's producing partner and friend), and William Fay, written by Lane and Crawford, and starring Crawford in the title role. Because of this, many viewers felt that this was a vanity project for Crawford, even though the film has found a cult following on video despite its initial box-office failure (despite it being marketed as New World's big summer action film).
Plot
In Paris, a girl by the name of Maureen Winston (Becca C. Ashley) is abducted by two evil-looking men. While her family prays for her safe return, Maureen's father heaps guilt on her sister Margaret (Karen Kopins), since she convinced her to go see the world. However, Margaret's grandfather (Leon Ames) has an idea: call for Jake Speed (Wayne Crawford) to go and rescue her. However, there's one problem: Jake Speed is a character in a series of 40's-style pulp fiction novels similar to those recounting the exploits of Doc Savage and Remo Williams, and doesn't exist.

However, Jake Speed does exist, as Margaret finds out when he leaves a note for her to meet him and his sidekick, Desmond Floyd (Dennis Christopher), in a tough Paris bar. The novels, as Margaret finds out, are based on Jake and Des's real life adventures, and they work for nothing, seeing action and excitement (and another novel) as their reward.

Jake reveals that Maureen was kidnapped by white slavers, and is being held in an African country. Jake, Des, and Margaret fly to the nation, which is in the middle of a civil war, in order to rescue her. Many twists and turns later, we find out that Jake's archenemy, the evil, perverted, murderous Englishman Sid (John Hurt), is behind the ring, and soon, Margaret becomes a part of it. Jake and Des must now rescue both Maureen and Margaret, stop Sid, and help the girls get out in one piece, while dealing with warring factions, pits of lions, and machine gun-firing helicopters.

Hannibal Brooks is a 1969 film about a man, accompanied by an Asian elephant, trying to get to Switzerland from Germany in World War II.
Plot
A POW in World War II is put to work in a Munich zoo, looking after an Asian elephant.

The zoo is bombed by the Americans and the director of the zoo decides it is not safe for his Asian elephant Lucy to remain there. So he sends Brooks (Oliver Reed) along with Kurt (a hostile German soldier), a friendly German soldier named Willy and a female cook to accompany the elephant to Innsbruck Zoo via train.

They are forced to walk when the SS commandeer the train. When in Austria, Kurt threatens to shoot Lucy in a drunken aggressive display. Brooks tries to stop the soldier and a fight ensues between the two, which ends in Brooks accidentally killing Kurt. Brooks, Lucy, Willy and the cook are forced to run towards the Swiss border to safety. They are helped along the way by an American escapee named Packy (Michael J. Pollard) who has formed a group of partisans to fight the Germans in Austria. After many run-ins with the Nazis, they eventually make it to Switzerland. Hannibal Brooks is widely considered to be one of the best performances by an elephant on the big screen.

Violent Saturday - Soundtrack (By Hugo Friedhofer) (1955)

slika

Violent Saturday is a 1955 American crime drama directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Victor Mature, Lee Marvin, Richard Egan and Stephen McNally. The film, set in a mining town, depicts the planning of a bank robbery as the nexus in the personal lives of several townspeople.

Prominent actors Sylvia Sidney and Ernest Borgnine are in supporting roles. Violent Saturday was filmed in color, on location in Bisbee, Arizona.
Plot Summary
Harper (Stephen McNally) is a bank robber posing as a traveling salesman. He arrives in town, soon to be joined by sadistic benzedrine addict Dill (Lee Marvin) and bookish Chapman (J. Carrol Naish).

Boyd Fairchild (Richard Egan) is manager of the local copper mine, troubled by his philandering wife (Margaret Hayes). He considers an affair with nurse Linda Sherman (Virginia Leith), though he truly loves his wife. His associate, Shelley Martin (Victor Mature), has a happy home life, but is embarrassed that his son believes he is a coward because he did not serve in World War II.

Subplots involves a peeping-tom bank manager, Harry Reeves (Tommy Noonan), and a larcenous librarian, Elsie Braden (Sylvia Sidney). As the bank robbers carry out their plot, the separate character threads are drawn together. Violence erupts during the robbery. Fairchild's wife is slain and bank manager Reeves is wounded.

Martin is held hostage on a farm with an Amish family. With the help of the father (Ernest Borgnine), he defeats the crooks in a savage gunfight.

In the aftermath, Martin becomes a hero to his son, and Linda comforts Fairchild as he grieves for his wife.

Warlock - Soundtrack (By Leigh Harline) (1959)

slika

Warlock is a 1959 film, released by Twentieth Century Fox and shot in colour and CinemaScope. It is a Western adapted from the novel by Oakley Hall (screenplay written by Robert Alan Aurthur). Directed by Edward Dmytryk, it stars Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn.

The supporting cast includes DeForest Kelley who was a regular in Western films before becoming best known for Star Trek.
Plot
Warlock is a small Utah mining town of the early 1880s. A group of local cowboys led by Abe McQuown (Tom Drake) often comes into town to shoot the place up, kill on just a whim, and beat up and humiliate any lawman who tries to stand up to them.

The Citizen's Committee decides to hire Clay Blaisedell (Henry Fonda), a renowned gunfighter, as town marshal in spite of the misgivings of some, such as old Judge Holloway (Wallace Ford) who insists that the situation should be handled within the law (though he admits that a loophole prevents it from being done effectively). Blaisedell is famous for his golden-handled guns.

Blaisedell arrives with his devoted friend, Tom Morgan (Anthony Quinn), his hero-worshiping, club footed, right-hand, who is no slouch with a gun himself. Morgan has a reputation as a heavy drinking gambler, but Blaisedell insists that Morgan is part of the package. They even take over the local saloon and rename it the "French Palace" (something they appear to have done in previous towns, since they bring the signboard with them).

Their first encounter with McQuown's men is without bloodshed, though the cowboys are humiliated and one of them, Johnny Gannon (Richard Widmark), stays behind. He has been put off by the gang's activities for some time now and resolves to be more law-abiding.

Some time later Morgan learns that his old flame, Lily Dollar (Dorothy Malone), is coming to town on the stagecoach, and she is accompanied by Bob Nicholson (Sol Gorss), brother of Big Ben Nicholson, who was recently killed by Blaisedell. Lily had left Morgan for Big Ben and knows that Morgan pushed Ben into challenging Blaisedell, who killed him as a result.

Morgan sets out to meet the stagecoach which is being ambushed by some of McQuown's men as he watches from a distance. He takes advantage of the situation to kill Bob Nicholson unseen. Lily arrives in town and sees Morgan there. She believes that he pulled the trigger, although this is based on intuition rather than evidence.

The robbers are arrested, sent to Bright City for trial, and subsequently cleared by a jury intimidated by McQuown. In the meantime, the Bright City sheriff, who disapproves of Blaisedell, appoints Johnny Gannon as official deputy. Although he was once a thug himself, Gannon takes his law enforcement duties seriously.

The scene is set for a number of confrontations between Gannon, Morgan, Blaisedell, and the McQuown gang.

Wanting revenge for their arrests, the released robbers, led by Johnny Gannon's brother Billy (Frank Gorshin), go to Warlock to confront Blaisedell and Morgan. The deputy urgently asks them to leave, and tells Billy, "I ain't backin' him, because you're my brother, and I ain't backin' you, because you're wrong." The outlaws proceed to provoke Blaisedell, and he kills two, including Billy. Soon after, the remaining outlaws try to give themselves legitimacy by posting notices declaring themselves "regulators," mocking Blaisedell's quasi-legal status as hired marshal in a town where a sheriff and deputies theoretically enforce the law.

What is more, some of the inhabitants are getting tired of Blaisedell and Morgan, something which, based on previous experience, the pair had predicted would happen. Blaisedell, however, has started a relationship with local girl Jessie Marlow (Dolores Michaels) and decides to marry and settle down, much to the surprise of Morgan, who wants to move on to another town and insists that Clay is nothing without him.

Gannon, with some assistance from townsfolk, unexpectedly manages to break up the gang without the help of Blaisedell, who was kept away from the fight at gunpoint by Morgan. It appears that Warlock has outgrown its need for the two gunfighters, but Morgan cannot tolerate the idea that Gannon is now more of a hero than Blaisedell. In the course of an argument, Blaisedell learns the truth about the deaths of the Nicholson brothers, and turns his back on Morgan, who resorts to drinking.

That evening, in a drunken state, Morgan shoots up the town and calls for Gannon, but the deputy is locked into his own cell by Blaisedell who insists that "Tom Morgan's my responsibility". Morgan has insisted that he was always covering Blaisedell's back in almost all their confrontations with their enemies, and that he is the better gunman. To prove his point he shoots off Blaisedell's hat, and the other, on instinct, shoots back, killing Morgan. Satisfied that Blaisedell is a hero again, Morgan's dying words are "I won, Clay, I won!"

The grief-stricken Blaisedell carries his friend's body into the saloon which, to the sound of thunder in the sky, he burns down, giving Morgan a "Viking funeral". The humiliated Gannon tells Blaisedell that he will arrest him in the morning if he does not leave town.

After what has happened, Blaisedell can't face staying in Warlock and decides to leave anyway. Jessie, however, won't accompany him. She insists that she is no Tom Morgan. Lily Dollar, for her part, looks as if she takes little satisfaction in finally getting her revenge. She has in the meantime taken up with Gannon.

The next day Gannon and Blaisedell face one another, the latter wearing his famous golden-handled guns. Blaisedell outdraws Gannon, but then throws his guns into the sand, smiles at Gannon, mounts his horse, and leaves town

Actor David Hemmings made one of his periodic forays into directing with the lightning-paced Race For the Yankee Zephyr. The film pits deer hunters against a group of unscrupulous businessmen. Their mutual goal is a reserve of gold, hidden somewhere in the Australian wilds. Ken Wahl and Leslie Ann Warren are the Hollywood-bred "box office insurance" in this Australian/New Zealand coproduction. Race for the Yankee Zephyr was first shown in America via pay-cable, where it carried no rating but was preceded with a warning vis-a-vis violence and strong language. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Comedians - Soundtrack (By Laurence Rosenthal) (1967)

slika

The Comedians is a 1967 film directed and produced by Peter Glenville, based on the novel of the same name by Graham Greene, who also wrote the screenplay. Stars were Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Alec Guinness. Paul Ford and Lillian Gish had supporting roles as a Presidential candidate and wife.

The film’s tag line was: They lie, they cheat, they destroy… they even try to love.

Plot summary
Set in the Haiti of "Papa Doc" Duvalier, the film tells the story of a sardonic white hotel owner and his encroaching fatalism as he watches Haiti sink into barbarism. The central character, a cynical, washed-up individual named Brown, portrayed by Richard Burton, watches as the Duvalier regime seeks to put down any dissent with an iron fist. He becomes friends with Dr. Magiot (James Earl Jones), the rebel leader. Brown also begins an affair with an ambassador’s wife, Martha Pineda (Elizabeth Taylor). Peter Ustinov played the husband, ambassador Manuel Pineda.

As Brown becomes a reluctant participant in the planned insurrection, the rebels recruit a British officer, Major H. O. Jones (Alec Guinness), to provide military leadership. Brown hosts a meeting of the group, including Magiot, Jones, and Pineda. But trouble ensues soon thereafter. Duvalier’s spies from the Tonton Macoute are watching Brown’s hotel and his every step.

The day after the meeting, three assassins confront Magiot while he’s performing surgery, and cut his throat with a scalpel knife.
Upon learning of the brutal murder, Brown reluctantly agrees to drive Jones into the countryside to the rebel base under the cover of night. When picking him up that evening, he realizes that Jones has apparently become involved with Martha Pineda. Brown leaves town with him in a jealous rage, and the inebriated Jones makes matters worse by bragging about his conquest. Driving carelessly up the treacherous, winding road, Brown hits an embankment and breaks the car’s front axle. The two continue their journey on foot, arriving at a remote cemetery, the designated meeting point, too late. They settle in for the night.

In the morning, three members of the Tonton Macoute accost Brown as he tries to find rebels in the area. They demand to know where Jones is, but Brown denies that the Major is there. As soon as Brown has finished speaking, a sleepy Jones approaches, unaware of the Macoute’s presence. The three command him to stop, but Jones turns around and runs uphill into the cemetery. They open fire, killing Jones. Then they order Brown to get into their jeep with them. As he does so, shots from rebels ring out, and the three drop dead.

Upon being asked about Major Jones, Brown tells the two rebels in dismay: “You arrived five minutes too late.” He then shows them the body of Jones. The taller of the two, after hearing that Magiot has been eliminated as well, comments: “They have killed the best of us.”

The two rebels then plead with Brown to assume the role of Jones, seeing this as the only hope they have left. Brown hesitates, commenting that he is no military man. But he finally relents after being asked whether he wants to continue living like this.

After a long walk, the three meet up with a small, rag tag group of poorly equipped rebels. The group buys the deception, believing that Brown is Jones, and he gives a cynical, taunting speech, apparently without being understood, since the rebels speak French and he English.

The camera then cuts to the Pinedas, as they are about to leave the island. Duvalier sees them off, telling them about a battle between government troops and rebels, and stating that two rebels have been killed. The Pinedas’ plane takes off, and Martha notices smoke on a hillside of the island.

The question whether Brown has survived the skirmish remains unanswered.

The Wings Of The Dove - Soundtrack (By Edward Shearmur) (1997)

slika

The Wings of the Dove is a 1997 American/British drama film directed by Iain Softley. The screenplay by Hossein Amini is based on the 1902 novel of the same name by Henry James. The film was nominated for numerous Academy Awards and BAFTAs, recognizing Bonham Carter's performance, the screenplay, and the cinematography.
Plot synopsis
Kate Croy lives under the careful watch of her Aunt Maude, who is determined the young girl does not follow in the path of her deceased mother, whose dissolute husband Lionel squandered her wealth in order to support his opium addiction. As a result, there's little likelihood she will be permitted to wed struggling muckraking journalist Merton Densher, to whom she secretly is engaged.

Kate is introduced to wealthy American Millie Theale, who is on an extended trip with her companion Susan Stringham, and the two become fast friends. Millie invites Kate to accompany her and Susan to Venice. Prior to their departure, she meets Merton, with whom she is smitten, and she asks him to join them as well.

When Lord Mark reveals Millie is seriously ill and he hopes to marry her in order to inherit her wealth and save his home, Kate decides to adopt his scheme. She encourages Merton to woo Millie, explaining what she expects him to do so as to achieve her goal of making him wealthy enough to receive her aunt's approval. Kate returns to London to allow Merton and Millie to spend time together and hopefully grow closer. What neither she nor Merton anticipate is the depth his feelings for the ailing woman will reach.

Merton reunites with Kate following Millie's death, and soon learns she bequeathed her estate to him. He opts not to accept it, and Kate decides she will forego her life of luxury to marry him, until she realizes the memory of Millie will remain between them forever.

The Governess - Soundtrack (By Edward Shearmur) (1998)

slika

The Governess is a 1998 British period drama film written and directed by Sandra Goldbacher. The screenplay focuses on a young Jewish woman who reinvents herself as a gentile governess when she is forced to find work to support her family.
Plot synopsis
Set in the 1830s, the story centers on Rosina da Silva, the sophisticated elder daughter in a wealthy Jewish family living in London. When her father is murdered on the street and leaves behind numerous debts, she forsakes an arranged marriage to an older suitor, transforms herself into Mary Blackchurch - a Protestant of partial Italian descent - in order to conceal her heritage, and accepts a position as a governess for a Scottish family living on the Isle of Skye in the Hebrides. Patriarch Charles Cavendish is a man of science intent on solving the problem of retaining a photographic image on paper, while his wife flounders in a sea of ennui. Their young daughter Clementina initially resists Mary's discipline, but eventually finds in her a friend and companion.

Mary, well-educated and unusually curious for a female in an era when a woman's primary focus is keeping house and attending to the needs of her family, surprises Charles with the depth of her interest in his work and becomes his assistant. The admiration he feels for the young woman soon turns into a passion that is reciprocated by Mary, but eventually he finds himself torn between his feelings for her and his dedication to his work.

Complications ensue when Henry Cavendish returns home after being expelled from Oxford University for smoking opium and becomes obsessed with Mary. While searching through her belongings, he uncovers evidence of her true background, and although he confesses to her he knows about her past, he promises to keep it their secret.

Charles discovers a nude photograph of himself Mary took while he was asleep following a session of lovemaking in his laboratory, and he begins to shun her, going so far as to claim credit for a technique she discovered when a fellow scientist visits. Angered by his rebuff and betrayal, Mary leaves the island and returns to London, but not before presenting Mrs. Cavendish with the picture of her naked husband. Once home, she reverts to her true identity and becomes a photographer noted for her distinct images of Jewish people.

Imago Mortis - Soundtrack (By Zacarías M. De La Riva) (2009)

slika

Plot
Inspired by the visually stylish Italian giallos of the 1970s, first time writer/director Stefano Bessoni's Imago Mortis follows a young film student on his quest to unmask a killer who projects his victims' last visions for the entire world to see. Bruno (Alberto Amarilla) is a student at the F.W. Murnau Institute, an international film school where aspiring filmmakers ply their trade. After discovering a bizarre helmet that immediately goes missing, Bruno is troubled to see his classmates start dropping like flies. There's a killer on the loose, a madman who taunts his prey by using a camera obscura to project the final image seen by his previous victims before moving in for the kill. His gruesome technique is based on the theory of "Thanatography," in which the final image a person sees before death is permanently imprinted on their retina. By removing his victims' eyes after the murder has been committed, the killer not only collects the ultimate trophy, but has a morbid means of taunting future victims as well. But Bruno suffers from terrible nightmares, and his waking reality becomes ever more twisted, identifying the killer becomes an impossible task. After all, it could be anyone from former director of photography Astolfi (Francesco Carnelutti), whose son was once killed while working on a film directed by Professor Olinski (Alex Angulo), to Prof. Olinski himself or even school proprietor Countess Orsini (Geraldine Chaplin), whom Bruno suspects to be the leader of a collegiate cabal that may wield more power than either he, or the rest of the student body, actually realizes. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
