Nathaniel Mayer - Why Won't You Let Me Be Black ? (2009)

Nathaniel Mayer (1944-2008) was one of the all-time great soul singers. His 1962 record "Village of Love" made him a star, and he inspired several generations of musicians, especially in his hometown of Detroit. Nathaniel's last sessions took place during two long summer days and nights of intense jamming, writing, and recording. "Why Don't You Give It To Me?" was the first installment of these recordings to be unleashed. Now, here at last, is a second volume of Nathaniel Mayer having a blast with the assistance of members of the Black Keys, SSM, Outrageous Cherry, and the Dirtbombs. The two acoustic performances are from a 2007 radio interview, Nathaniel's only known "unplugged" performance. About the title: It has to do with the food he kept being served while on tour in Europe. When Nate finally became frustrated with the countless plates of cheese and French bread that awaited him backstage at every gig, he shouted "Why Won't You Let Me Be Black?". He agreed that it sounded like a good title for his next album.

Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion - Exploration (2005)

http://rapidshare.com/files/264319480/SLG_JIE_Vic.zip

Harmonies highlight this studio debut by Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, the wife-and-husband duo who previously released albums of their own. As the daughter of Arlo Guthrie and granddaughter of Woody, Sarah Lee has deep bloodlines in the folk tradition, while Johnny was a Carolina indie-rocker with Dillon Fence. With coproduction and guitar by the Jayhawks' Gary Louris and musicianship that draws from that band and Son Volt, the album matches organic arrangements to material that shows a social conscience while celebrating domestic bliss. Highlights range from a performance of Pete Seeger's previously unreleased "Dr. King" to the poppier propulsion of Guthrie's "Holdin' Back," which could pass as a Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac outtake. Eric Heywood's steel guitar brings a lilt to Irion's album-opening "In Lieu of Flowers," and Dave Boquist's banjo drives "Gotta Prove" into a footstomping finale. In between, much of the music has the easy feel of a front-porch rocking chair. --Don McLeese

James Yorkston returns in the company of The Big Eyes Family Players with a new album of traditional songs from the length and breadth of the Great Britain and Ireland, and one tune from Galicia in Spain. After a decade which has seen folk music morph into nu-folk, mobile phone-ad folk, mortgage-folk, smoothie-folk and so on, Yorkston has reached back into the tradition of song and place and drawn a line in the sand.

Mi and L'au - Good Morning Jokers (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/265713591/M_LGMJ_Vic.zip

Mira Anita Mathilda Romantschuk is an ethereal looking finnish girl who sings like an elf, with a sharpened, chilly voice. She used to work as a model in Paris when she met Laurent Leclère, the composer and guitar player to whom Devendra Banhart dedicated “Gentle Soul”.

Laurent had composed music for some films, and was plenty of inspiration, but he still had not been able to channel it . When he met Mi, he found his own intense and indescribable musical language, as indescribable as the fire crackle or a January blizzard .The combination was perfect: “Picture a glacier with a red ember glowing in its center.”, Michael Gira said when he produced their first work with Young God Records.

Mi & L’Au stayed for a while in Paris until they decided to get lost in nature and lock themselves with their guitars in a hut, surrounded by snow , in the lost boreal moors. Cold, loneliness and music inspired such a sonorities that the castrating marketing labels can´t define, as many other times when it comes to real creators.

L’Au declares that his roots are in the European classical music which is true in comparison to all Northamerican pop, rock and jazz, but don´t expect an expert display or academic formalism from Mi & L’Au, but soul, strength and feelings. Such a strong feelings expressed with so much harshness that can even make you feel pain while listening to the duo.

They’ve been 4 years around the World, visiting any place where people were well-disposed towards their tender, queer and ghostly music. They’ve finally landed in the Mediterranean. Valencia, the hiper-cheerfull and confortable capital of the spanish East coast, is their home now and it’s been there where Mi and L’Au have recorded their new work, “Good Morning Jokers”. Don´t you think that because they’re in the bright flower’s land, their work lacks melancholy and darkness of their characteristic sound.

Mistery and intelligence, tenderness and fear, beauty and misery combine in a disturbing and queer potion that is listened with pleasure, but at the same time makes the listener become uneasy, finding that suddenly is hidden away in somebody else’s World, filled with an irresistible and unlikely beauty and ambiguous as siren’s songs and fairy’s tears.

“Good Morning Jokers” is a deep and demanding new musical experience that won´t leave anybody indifferent.

Bap Kennedy - Howl On (2009)

Belfast-born singer-songwriter, Martin (or Bap) Kennedy, has been treading the rocky boards for nigh-on 20 years having led minor hitmakers, Energy Orchard, on their unsustainable UK Top 60 debut in 1990. Once sharing a stage with mentor, Van Morrison, while also becoming buddies with alt.country boy, Steve Earle, Bap has steadily gained respect due to several albums, including Domestic Blues, Lonely Street and his last, The Big Picture.

Howl On represents his best so far, reflecting as it does, the spirit of Americana through Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid-era Dylan (eg ‘Cold War Country Blues’, ‘The Right Stuff’ and ‘The Blue One’). Featuring fellow Irishman Henry McCullough on guitar, Kennedy upbeats Hendrix’s old trad nugget, ‘Hey Joe’, a Woodstock hangover from one of Bap’s other childhood inspirations: – Neil Armstrong and the 1969 moon landing. William Elliott Whitmore - Hymns for the Hopeless (2003)

William Elliott Whitmore has the ancient sounding voice of an 80-year-old Appalachian moonshiner, and while he is yet to turn thirty, his bleak and death-haunted tales are full of the kind of regrets that only a long life full of loss and struggle can validate. On Hymns for the Hopeless, his debut release, Whitmore mines a strip of narrow Americana that conjures Dock Boggs more than it does Ralph Stanley, and if this isn't exactly the blues, well, it sure isn't bluegrass, either. Actually, the simple, stark three-note melodies of Whitmore's dirges sound more like church hymns than anything else, and his ragged crow-croak of a voice (which makes Tom Waits sound glib and Leonard Cohen sound like a pop diva) comes from a place where the blues and gospel first converged into country. From the first track, the unaccompanied "Cold and Dead," Whitmore begins an unrelenting search for redemption and reaches out for death as the only true reckoning of a man's life, and if he seems to share little of a street preacher's faith in a paradise beyond that reckoning, he seems to reach out for it anyway, and by the album's closer, the full-tilt gospel romp of "Our Paths Will Cross Again," he seems to suggest that yes, there's hope, even for the hopeless. This is timeless stuff, delivered in stark arrangements of just banjo or guitar, with occasional touches of junkyard percussion, and throughout there is Whitmore's harrowing, convincing voice that sounds like it has crossed the River Styx and returned to preach to the living. If there is a problem with this striking album, it is in a lack of variety, as each song unwinds at the same slow pace, and occasionally Whitmore simply tries too hard and loses believability, as he does with "From the Cell Door to the Gallows," which, although striking, suffers from an obvious case of jailhouse noir, and it is the lone track where Whitmore fails to completely inhabit his voice. In the end, this is an amazing debut, a country album that is as far from today's hat acts as a hat can get, an album of rare artistic courage, one that faces death, embraces it, and comes out the other end in a gospel hoedown. Hymns for the Hopeless is a brilliant beginning for William Elliott Whitmore. -- AMG

William Elliott Whitmore - Ashes to Dust (2005)

mp3 VBR~192kpbs | 45MB | 35:00 min.
Country-Folk, Neo-Traditional Folk, Folk-Blues, Blues Gospel, Americana
William Elliott Whitmore's stunning debut album, Hymns for the Hopeless, a death-haunted collection of country-folk dirges sung in an ancient croak of a voice, begged the question, if an acceptance of death is both redemption and deliverance from a life of pain, struggle and regret, where to next? With Ashes to Dust, his second album, Whitmore makes it clear that the answer is simply more of the same. Like the first offering, this release practices a stern folk minimalism, with Whitmore's whiskey gargle of a voice delivering slow-burning gospel sermons to the sparse accompaniment of banjo or guitar, and when the occasional electric slide guitar enters, it seems to come from the next century, so insular is the tone here. This is country music that is still attached at the hip to gospel and the stern Baptist church hymns that are tailored to the three-note vocal range of the everyman, and Whitmore's astounding voice makes it all stick in the mind like a cautionary tale. But while most of Ashes to Dust could fit seamlessly alongside Hymns for the Hopeless, there are some subtle differences that make this album at least a partial step farther down the road to redemption. Death is still the dominate force here, and it sits atop the sequence like a huge shadow in songs like "The Day the End Finally Came," "Diggin' My Grave," and "The Buzzards Won't Cry," but Whitmore has decided to embrace hope and love in the fiercely romantic "When Push Comes to Shove," the stunning train song "Lift My Jug (Song for Hub Cale)," and the masterful portrait of his farmer father that closes the album, "Porchlight." These three songs in particular lift the album out of its harrowing fascination with death and allow some light in on the proceedings. Redemption, Whitmore appears to be saying, just might be attainable in the here and now after all. Ashes to Dust is another powerful album from one of the brightest talents on the Americana scene, one who understands that country isn't about how you wear your hat, it's about how you handle the inevitable. -- <AMG>

Paula Frazer & Tarnation - Now It's Time (2007)

Track List:
August's Song
Pretend
Bitter Rose
Sleeping Dreams
First Sign
Nowhere
Another Day
Shadows
I'll Never Know
Now It's Time
All the Time

Thirty seconds in and Paula Frazer’s sweet, high-lonesome vocal comes close to collapsing. Emitting the erudite trickery of a tightrope walker, she wobbles and wavers for effect, hitting the high note whilst effectively dangling one foot off the wire at the same time. She’s in control though. Like a kite flyer caught off guard by a gust of wind, she reins the note in and rolls it down an octave or two. Unfortunately, for fans of Frazer and her old band Tarnation (whose name she resurrects for this outing), her vocal dexterity is downplayed on Now It’s Time. Instead of the Patsy Cline swoops of albums past, Frazer embraces a folk vibe that’s more Sandy Denny than sweetheart of the rodeo.

Though this stylistic shift is slight, it’s something she’s gravitated towards since going solo. Better known for guest appearances (Cornershop, Tindersticks, Handsome Boy Modeling School) than her own records, Frazer formed Tarnation in 1991 after ten years of playing in punk bands. Anchored by a revolving array of musicians, the group released two well-received alt-country albums that paired countrypolitan accoutrements with Ennio Morricone atmospherics. Atop of all this sat Frazer’s voice: its haunting lilt and wordless prowess, coupled with her ability to roll notes around with ease, made the band a blank canvas for her to paint upon.

Perhaps realizing this, Frazer tossed away the Tarnation tag in 1998, releasing three records under her own name that explored a lush, symphonic sound. While writing songs for this new album though, she sought the canyon echo of old and re-called the name. Now It’s Time however, is a refined version of that band’s early nineties output. Drums don’t appear until track three. Guitars are plucked and lightly strummed. Piano motifs pop in and out. The unifying factor is Frazer’s voice, which, befitting her day job (she’s a professional weaver) binds everything together.

Now It’s Time finds Frazer languid and longing: out of love, yet still in love. On the opening track, “August’s Song,” she’s forlorn yet forgiving (“Do the new things you know bring you happiness now / I don’t know / But I hope so”). The ragtime piano-propelled “Bitter Rose,” whose title and tune brings to mind Laura Cantrell, finds Frazer fumbling for answers (“If I stay in your heart will you set me free?”). And on the plaintive folk of “Another Day,” she reminds us, “You can’t go back because now it’s gone.”

The past, it seems, is a perpetual pest. Frazer’s last album was, after all, entitled Leave the Sad Things Behind. And while she wasn’t able to take that album title advice to heart, the downbeat nature of the lyrics is often usurped by her musicianship. As the pastoral proceeds into pedantic she pulls us back in with a sublime vocal turn or twisting melody. “Nowhere,” with its stasis-like verse, is saved by a soaring chorus. The mature title track loses its MOR shackles thanks to Frazer’s emphatic vocal inflections. And the album itself is given a well-needed shot with the whiskey soaked slide guitar of “I’ll Never Know.” For those worried about Frazer’s frame of mind (she informs us earlier that the moon is her only friend), the album ends on a high note. Her valleyed vocals echo around the closing “All the Time,” assuring us that she is, in fact, “feeling good.” We suspected as much.

Bill Frisell - Disfarmer (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/265852869/BiFiDis_Vic.zip

The late Michael Disfarmer was an odd, curmudgeonly character in the rural community of Heber Springs, Arkansas, who, despite his anti-social character, chose to record the stark images of his fellow townspeople, during the 1940's and 50's, in cheap black-and-white photographic portraits. Decades after the photographer's passing, a cache of work made by this solitary and oft-reviled man was rediscovered, and he has come to be regarded as an important outsider artist. Among the many drawn to his plain yet deeply evocative pictures was Chuck Helm, Director of the Performing Arts at the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio, who introduced guitarist and composer Bill Frisell to Disfarmer's oeuvre on the hunch that Frisell might be inspired by it.
Says Helm, the catalyst for Disfarmer, 'To me, Bill Frisell is a uniquely American artist with a distinctive and singular musical voice, like that of Thelonious Monk or Aaron Copland. In his probing yet atmospheric evocations of American vistas I could hear parallels to the emotional truths of Disfarmer's compelling photographs.'
As Helm suspected, Disfarmer's work resonated with Frisell and led to the creation of a touring multimedia work, Disfarmer Project - featuring Frisell, lap steel guitar player Greg Leisz and violinist Jenny Scheinman, plus slides of Disfarmer's photos, displayed on screens. The piece premiered on March 3, 2007 at the Wexner Center, on the campus of Ohio State University. The score was subsequently recorded in Seattle and Nashville, produced by Frisell's longtime collaborator Lee Townsend and also featuring Viktor Krauss on bass. Along with the Frisell's original compositions, he interpolates versions of such tunes as Arthur Crudup's 'That's Alright Mama' and Hank Williams Sr.'s 'I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)' into this subtly yet stunningly beautiful set.

Anthony Da Costa - Not Afraid Of Nothing (08/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/266032059/ADCNAoN_Vic.zip

Anthony da Costa IS not afraid of nothing.

A public statement, a self-realization, an album title, a cool chance to use a double negative…or all of the above. Not sure. But one thing is certain: Anthony’s new record is anything but careful.

In 2007, at 16, he became the youngest winner ever at the Falcon Ridge and Kerrville Folk Festivals. In 2008, at 17, he released two, critically-acclaimed albums. He also played prestigious folk festivals, including the Philadelphia Folk Festival and Tonder Festival in Denmark, and opened for music icons, like Loretta Lynn and Dan Bern.

Now, in 2009, at 18, and before heading off to Columbia University this fall, he’s released a new record, "Not Afraid of Nothing." But, in this album, his 8th, Anthony ventures into new musical territory. While one foot’s in folk, the other foot’s loose and wandering into various genres, influenced by the work of Elliott Smith, Ryan Adams and some other, less-obvious artists, like The Smiths and Jay-Z. It’s a homegrown record, the first that he's recorded on a Macbook Pro with an MBox in living rooms and basements throughout Anthony's hometown of Pleasantville, NY. Many of the tracks were also recorded in the beautiful wood room at Woody's House in Croton, NY.

"I needed to get to some place else with this record — some place with a little groove." As for the songs, they document Anthony’s last year in high school — a year of clarity and confusion, love and loneliness, change and nostalgia and, ultimately, renewal.

"This album is definitely the most of ME that I’ve put out there, but I hope it can be about all of US in a way. If it’s not, than I’m not doing my job."

Box Elders - Alice and Friends 2009.

slika

Alice and Friends is the debut LP from this Omaha, Nebraska band. Formed by brothers Clayton and Jeremiah McIntyre, they added a drummer, Dave Goldberg, whose playing style sounds more like a parlor trick than a technique--he plays drums and keyboards at the same time. The band calls its music "cave pop," but the usual venue for such a sound would not be a cave but a garage. They released a single in 2008 and toured with Cursive before signing with Goner Records. The title of their debut may sound cute and sincere, but it’s still thoroughly irreverent and oddball: it's named after the band’s "favorite cult-run vegan Korean BBQ."

Shapiro, along with Swedish producer Johan Agebjörn, have been crafting delicate Italo pop songs since 2006 when the "I'll Be By Your Side" single was released by Diskokaine. Since then, the duo has traveled around the world, and made the jump from the tiny imprint over to the larger Permanent Vacation and Paper Bag labels. Both of those companies will once again be involved with the release of Shapiro's sophomore effort, entitled My Guilty Pleasure.

It's an album that the duo describes as "a bit more poppy and varied" with collaborations slated from Cloetta Pari and Tensnake, as well as "a lot of songwriting assistance from Roger Gunnarsson." At the end of the day, though, they have modest aims for the record: "It will hopefully make you fall in love with the person sitting next to you on the bus," says Sally.

Paper Bag and Permanent Vacation will release Sally Shapiro's My Guilty Pleasure on August 25, 2009.

Brendan Benson - My Old Familiar Friend (2009)

slika

Outside of the Raconteurs, Brendan Benson carves out excellent pop tunes. His first three solo albums are testament to this, especially debut One Mississippi. His latest release My Old Familiar will be released August 18th on ATO Records. Taking a break from writing, recording and touring with the Racs, the result is a timeless 11-track new album. My Old, Familiar Friend is a marriage of passion and perfectionism and an illustration of all that is special about BB.

Catie Curtis - Hello Stranger (08/2009)

http://rapidshare.com/files/266465627/CaCuHS_Vic.zip

When the singer/songwriter movement boomed in the mid-1990s, Catie Curtis was at its core. A veteran artist with a 15 year career, Curtis has recorded nine solo albums and has toured with the Lilith Fair as well as Dar Williams and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Her songs have appeared in numerous television shows (Dawson's Creek, Felicity, Grey's Anatomy and Alias) and independent films (500 Miles to Graceland, A Slipping Down Life). And in 2009 she was honored to be
selected to perform at the Obama inauguration in Washington D.C. Over the years, Curtis' many fans have requested stripped down version of her classic songs, capturing the spirit and intimacy of her live shows. With Hello Stranger, Curtis achieves that career goal. The album, recorded in Nashville, features Curtis in the company of a select group of Nashville all-star pickers including Stuart Duncan (fiddle, mandolin), Alison Brown (banjo), Todd Phillips (bass), George Marinelli (guitar/mandolin/dobro) and Kenny Malone (percussion) on re-workings of some fan favorites as well as a few choice covers. Guests Darrell Scott and Mary Gauthier dropped by for vocal appearances on several cuts, and the resulting album is reminiscent of Steve Earle's Train A Comin' project in its intimacy, and shows a side of Curtis' musical persona never before captured on CD. Highlight tracks include the Curtis chestnut "My Dad's Yard", the title track "Hello Stranger" (featuring a duet with Mary Gauthier) and a cover of the Cat Steven's Track Titles s classic "Tuesday's Dead."

Fireside Bellows - No Time To Die (2008)

Recorded over 9 days at Spicerack Studios in Brunswick, Melbourne, No Time to Die is the debut album from the remarkable alt. country harmony collaboration of local acclaimed Melbourne Song-smith Jordie Lane and Canadian singer songwriter Tracy McNeil. Within the walls of the old warehouse studio, a true alchemy existed through the merging and seamless blend of Lane and McNeil’s voices to form one pure sound. The album moves through various musical styles, but it is always held firmly together through its simple country instrumentation and raw approach to production and Lane and McNeil’s remarkable vocal connection. Fireside Bellows have that special something; with beautifully crafted stories that are delivered with honesty and a shared contemporary perspective on life.

The Lovell Sisters - Time To Grow (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/266403237/TLSTTG_Vic.zip

With Time To Grow, The Lovell Sisters have proven that, although they are all under the age of 25 and on the verge of releasing their second album, mature vocals and tight-laced harmonies aren't only executed by the pros. The sisters are a classically trained, sweet-faced trio hailing from Calhoun, Georgia. With roots in bluegrass and classical music, Jessica, Megan, and Rebecca Lovell have managed to blend folk, country, and acoustics into one fortified, eclectic sound.

The ladies offer a far-from-dull, 11-track album, packed with accessible Southern charm. Memorable songs include the acoustic-guitar driven "Paulita Maxwell" and the melodic ballad "Distance." Time To Grow also delivers two welcome departures in instrumentals: the frenetically wired "Ichetucknee Chutney" and the unplugged, string epic "The Door In The Wall."

The Lovell Sisters are indie girls at heart — artists that opted out of a major record label deal for the sole purpose of maintaining creative control over their songwriting. As co-producers of their sophomore release, the band features five original songs and showcases their polished musicianship through the extensive display of Jessica on fiddle, Megan on dobro, and Rebecca on guitar and mandolin. The Lovells define their sound as "progressive rock," which is appropriate to a certain extent — but perhaps less rock and more sophisticated pop with an Alison Krauss undertone.

Mark Knopfler ~ Get Lucky (2009)

slika

Get Lucky is his sixth solo album and the follow up to Kill To Get Crimson, released in 2007. Knopfler fans who've taken solace with Brothers in Arms, will find plenty of rooms and open spaces in which to rest or stroll here. The rootsy, nostalgic feel of this album juxtaposes simpler times with the present, allowing us to look at where we are today from another place. Very cinematic stuff that puts perspective on the world around us, as expressed in the tunes "Before Gas and TV", "The Car Was the One" as well as the title cut.
As you can see, it's very difficult to review this album strictly on its guitar aspects. The guitars are definitely there, with acoustics and signature electric tones layered and woven throughout lush arrangements of strings and the ever familiar Celtic pipes we've also come to expect from the Scotsman. The spaces are critically important and the rock flavors come in ballad form with more firm resolve than dance floor abandon, as in "Cleaning my Gun".
This is a work for and on many levels, but mostly for grown ups who've had a chance to experience living and working for what it is. With lyrics similarly austere as Springsteen's Nebraska, the arrangements on the other hand are deep, wide and open with music growing from every nook and cranny, and around every bend.
Co-produced with Chuck Ainlay & Guy Fletcher, the album has the classic Mark Knopler feel. Certain moments have a Daniel Lanois feel too. This is one you'll take out and enjoy like and with old wine for years to come.
In summary, Get Lucky has enough timeless feel to lose yourself in like a great old movie one never tires of watching. Guitar-wise, Mark Knopfler has long established himself, so now it's on to the rest of the journey...

Simian Mobile Disco - Temporary Pleasure (08/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/266780306/SMDTP_Vic.zip

Entitled Temporary Pleasure, the duo's second album features a raft of high profile vocal performances, with only two of the record's ten tracks appearing in instrumental form. Yeasayer's Chris Keating voices the lead-off single "Audacity of Huge," whilst Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor, Jamie Lidell, Gossip's Beth Ditto and Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys are amongst the other acts to have taken their turn in Simian's vocal booth over the last 18 months of recording. From what we've heard of the record, it seems to have much more of a tech-house slant than 2007's Attack Decay Sustain Release, with the ascending riffs of "10000 Horses Can't Be Wrong" and "Good Life"-esque synth stabs of "Synthesise" poised to cater to a much different set of DJs than their more electro-inclined material. Designer and illustrator Kate Moross (who also runs vinyl-only indie label Isomorph) is set to fashion the artwork for the release, and she'll also take directorial duties for the "Audacity Of Huge" music video.

01. Cream Dream (featuring Gruff Rhys)
02. Audacity of Huge (featuring Chris Keating)
03. 10000 Horses Can't Be Wrong
04. Cruel Intentions (featuring Beth Ditto)
05. Off The Map (featuring Jamie Lidell)
06. Synthesise
07. Bad Blood (featuring Alexis Taylor)
08. Turn Up The Dial (featuring Young Fathers)
09. Ambulance
10. Pinball (featuring Telepathe)

Loving Takes This Course - A Tribute To The Songs Of Kath Bloom (2009).

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/265705444/KBLTTC_Vic.zip

A two disc tribute to the beautiful, heartrending songs of Connecticut folksinging legend Kath Bloom.
Disc Two features recordings of Kath's songs by the likes of Bill Callahan, Devendra Banhart, Mark Kozelek, Josephine Foster, Scout Niblett and many more, while Disc One features Kath's original versions of the songs covered on Disc One.

"One of the most heartbreaking singers ever. Beautiful" - Devendra Banhart
"I consider myself her biggest fan." - Josephine Foster
"I've never enjoyed sharing a bill with anyone as much as I have with Kath. She's wonderful and lights up the room wherever she goes." - Mark Kozelek
----
Kath Bloom is a legend of folk, country, blues and avant-garde music. She has been making records since the late 70s, and has had her music featured in the movie Before Sunrise by Richard Linklater (starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy).
The daughter of world-renowned oboist Robert Bloom, Kath was born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut, where she trained as a cellist. However, she soon gave away formal musical education for the acoustic guitar, which she taught herself over long afternoons spent among the tombstones of her local cemetery.
Kath met avant-garde guitarist Loren Mazzacane Connors in 1976, teaming up with him for a series of now highly sought-after recordings of traditional blues and folk songs and Bloom’s originals. Some records were released in editions of as few as fifty, most no more than 200 copies, until the duo released their swansong Moonlight in 1984.
After a period of child-rearing, family life and daily financial struggle, Kath began to return to songwriting and recording in the early 90s, revealing a mother-of-three songwriter as accomplished and affecting as any of her more acclaimed colleagues such as Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch or Hazel Dickens.

Disc 1 (Kath Bloom)
1. Everything Looks Different At Night
2. Love Me

Will Scott - Gnawbone (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/264220818/WiScG_Vic.zip

"Gnawbone," produced by Gold Record recipient, Preacher Boy (Blind Pig Records, Coast Road Records, Eagle Eye Cherry) is Will Scott's second release under his name and his studio debut. The album features guest performances by Jolie Holland, Samantha Parton (The Be Good Tanyas), and Jan Bell.

“An astonishingly assured blend of sophisticated songwriting and soulful vocals… backed up by a crack team of hand-picked musicians.” -Martin Dowsing in the London Evening Standard.

Known for his big, bluesy voice and distinctive guitar playing, Scott’s work has been labeled “Soul Americana”--a meeting of Alt. Country and Blues with a dash of Rock and Roll. The New York Press describes his voice as “thick as blood.” His popular weekly residency in Brooklyn is hailed as “the best weekly blues show in New York” by Lucid Culture. “Gnawbone” showcases his voice and style backed by some of the country’s finest musicians including Joe Magistro on drums, Jim Whitney on upright bass, and Preacher Boy on Hammond, piano, guitar, and more.

The first two tracks show Scott’s Indiana roots. Tom-Petty-styled rocker, “Jack’s Defeat Creek,” and slide-guitar romp, “Gnawbone,” are both inspired by towns of the same names in southern Indiana. Additional highlights include “Make Her Love Me,” a funky, Junior Kimbrough-inspired groove, “Stain Lifter,” a heavy-hitting song of contrition with a touch of Lanois-style production, and “Amen Corner,” a meditation on dying made heart-breaking by Jolie Holland’s devilish fiddle and the angelic backing vocals of Holland, Samantha Parton, and Jan Bell.

01. Jack's Defeat Creek
02. Gnawbone
03. Make Her Love Me
04. Lazy Summertime
05. Country Soil
06. Louisiana Lullaby
07. Paper Match
08. Mother May I
09. Stain Lifter

Soulsavers- Broken 2009.

slika

When Soulsavers recorded 2007's It's Not How Far You Fall, It's How You Land they were out of contract, scraping by on credit cards and had just begun working with Mark Lanegan; not known for his frivolity. Unsurprisingly, it emerged as dark and depressed. Two years, a major label record deal and mountains of ecstatic reviews later, and the duo's prospects have brightened considerably, though their sound – as their fans will be relieved to hear – has not.

Like its predecessor, Broken fuses delta blues, grizzled gospel and comedown electronica to create an atmosphere that is both grand and bleak. In fact, on initial listens the mood is so downbeat that songs blur oppressively into each other, not helped by a hoary blues vocabulary where blood is always ''cursed'', wounds ''never heal'' and bones are always ''weary.''

Understandably, many will lack the appetite for second helpings. But for those who persevere, there are enough gleams of light poking through the cloud cover, and enough slowly revealed surprises to make the effort worthwhile. So while Death Bells is too dourly self-regarding to truly love, and the long, creaky Gene Clark cover Some Misunderstanding sounds distressingly like Chris Rea, other songs see Soulsavers live up to their considerable reputation.

One is Unbalanced Pieces, where the solemnity of Lanegan's central melody is lifted by a skulking, hypnotic bass and one of the album's few big, hummable choruses. You’ll Miss Me When I Burn is far starker, based around little more than a mournful, circling piano, but is all the more moving for its simplicity.

Unusually, the album saves its best surprises for the end, when Red Ghost makes a late, strangely uplifting appearance. On the sweet, sad-eyed lullaby of Praying Ground, the Australian sings with an authority and assurance remarkable in a newcomer. Even more boldly, she more than holds her own on her duet with Lanegan, Rolling Sky, which is as menacing and unpredictable as an approaching storm.

Broken is probably too stubborn and idiosyncratic to win over many who haven't already acquired a taste for either Soulsavers or Lanegan. But those who have are likely to love it deeply and fiercely.

Kylie Auldist - Made Of Stone 2009.

slika

The sound of the summer: Kylie Auldist's powerful yet nuanced soul style shines on her second album, Made Of Stone, with The Bamboos as her backing band, and band-leader Lance Ferguson (Lanu) on production. A sizzling collection of origianl, grown-up pop with warm, retro-inspired funk and mod soul flavors complementing the razor sharp musicianship, crystal clear production and Kylie's incisive lyrical voice. Her 2008 debut Just Say was piced up by tastemakers including Mark Lamarr (Radio 2), who labelled it one of his albums of the year.
Kylie Auldist possesses the kind of powerful yet nuanced soul voice that comes along only once in a while, and when you've heard it once you never quite forget it. On her second album, Made of Stone, the Australian singer has again enlisted the production skills of Tru Thoughts label-mate Lance Ferguson (Lanu/The Bamboos) to create a sizzling collection of original, grown-up pop with warm, retro-inspired funk and mod soul flavours complementing the razor sharp musicanship, crystal clear production and Kylie's incisive lrical voice.

As on her 2008 debut Just Say - which was picked up on by tastemakers including Mark Lamarr (Radio 2), who labelled it one of his albums of the year - Kylie is backed on this album by Australian kings of funk, The Bamboos, with whom she has been recording and touring since before she launched her solo career, and who are often compared to Sharon Jones' Dap-Kings as one of the world's best deep funk bands. With the Bamboos, Kylie recorded live radio sessions last year for Mark Lamarr' God's Jukebox on Radio 2, and the 6Music Funk & Soul Show. Recent major live shows across Australia have included a double header with Syl Johnson in Melbourne; showing the dance kids at the DJ-heavy Park Life dates in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne that you can still dance to real live instrumentals; and playing alongside Ben Harper at the Byron Bay Blues Fest, after which the festival director wrote personally to say how impressed he was with them.

Made of Stone kicks off with a familiarly fiery funk number in the shape of the title track, sung ostensibly by the steely side of Kylie - a born singer who, growing up in an outback one-horse town, made it her mission to take on the bright lights of Melbourne ans all that stood in her way. A few tracks in though, and you'll see a gear change that finds Kylie and the band in a more mellifluous, reflective soul mode, where the prefectly-crafted and songs range from knowingly articulated tales of life and love along universal themes, such as Looking for You, to the more complex internal web of experiences that informs I Will, written for her two sons, and the closing track, which is a dedication to a dearly missed member of a close-knit family.

Many songs on this album are reminiscent in their instant appeal and charm to the crossover style that The Bamboos coined so succesfully with that cover of Kings of Leon's King of the Rodeo last year, a release that cemented them in the consciousness of the mainstream crowd and gained heavy support on XFM, 6Music and playlisting on BBC London, as well as an international thumbs-up from indie kids and soul fans alike.

The double A-side 7" single, It's On / Made of Stone, is out in July.
Kylie Auldist will be in the UK in september, performing at Tru Thoughts' 10th Birthday Party among other shows.

From her MySpace page :
"Europe here i come!! Well we survived the byron bay floods thanks very much. it was awwesome-the bamboos really gave it some grunt. Brisbane was fantastic too-Golden sounds were very much at home and warmed up the crowd perfectly. Things have been a little quiet on the gig scene since-been doing a bit with COOKING ON 3 BURNERS who are excellent and who i am doing a europe tour with in September. So if your in uk or europe somewhere and you see the TRU THOUGHTS banner flying come and see a show. Lance and i will be doing some live dj sets as well featuring songs from both JUST SAY and my NEW ALBUM!!! MADE OF STONE! We're overseas from sept 4 til 27th. while i'm overseas i promise i will take lessons from the guys in how to change my myspace page to make it more interesting!!! peace out! xkylie"

Ian Brown - Stellify [EP] (08/2009)

http://rapidshare.com/files/267211704/IBSep_Vic.zip

Ex-Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown has confirmed details of a new EP which is now officially available through iTunes.Entitled the Stellify EP, the new four track CD became available for download at midnight on August 10th..
---
The Stellify EP features four brand new tracks: Stellify kicks off with staccato rhythms colliding with pounding bass and euphoric brass, as Brown addresses his “angel falling from the sky”. Crowning Of The Poor follows, outlining the dreams and aspirations of the “son of a poor boy”, of where things went right and wrong. For The Glory set the internet ablaze when its lyrics were published last month, with fans and press eager to decipher the song’s seemingly autobiographical story. Final song Marathon Man brings the EP full circle, its stripped down electronics and scorched earth rhythms underpinning Brown’s valedictory chorus: “I am the marathon man, with the whole world in my hands.”

Stellify will be released as a traditional single via all retailers on 21 September on Fiction. It is followed a week later by My Way, on CD, 12-inch and download. The bulk of the album’s 12 tracks were co-written with long time collaborator Dave McCracken at London's Battery Studios, where Brown and the Stone Roses recorded their seminal debut 20 years before.

02 Crowning of the Poor
