The Peekers - Life In The Air (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/270025826/TP-LITA.rar

There's smart pop, and there's smart pop, and the Peekers are clearly shooting for dean's list status on their debut album, Life in the Air — fitting enough, since the album was recorded in a studio on the campus of the University of Ohio. Between the frequent four-part harmonies, the marimbas, the accordions, the clarinets, the mandolins, the rinky-tink pianos, and the vocals filtered to sound like old radios, the Peekers never waste an opportunity to demonstrate how clever they are on these 13 songs, which gets a bit wearying over the course of 39 minutes. It would be considerably worse if it weren't for the fact that the Peekers happen to be quite good at what they do; there are plenty of lovely melodies on Life in the Air, the harmonies are well executed and imaginative, the musicians have good skills, and Brittney Maddox's lead vocals on "Favorite Love" and "Sweet Singin' Birds" are charming enough to wear down anyone's resistance. There are also occasional moments where the band sets the cuteness aside for a moment and just plays, as on the faintly R&B-influenced "Sweet Singin' Birds" and the dynamic "Concrete Feet," and the results demonstrate just how much talent lurks beneath this combo's schtick. But while it's hard not to think at least one member of the Peekers prayed for a quote like the one from Daytrotter that appears in their press kit — "the six horsemen of the lovepoclypse" — the line "almost annoyingly precious" from The Austin Chronicle, doubtless included in jest, tells the tale much better. Give these kids a chance to grow up a bit and they could create something great; as it is, Life in the Air is a promising debut but never quite as clever or cute as they believe they are.

Tom Russell - Blood and Candle Smoke (09/2009)

With a career stretching back nearly four decades, and a catalog of more than 20 albums, Tom Russell is already considered one of the great singer/songwriters of our time. But his newest album, Blood and Candle Smoke, recorded in Tucson with members of the indie-rock band Calexico, takes his work to another level entirely with tremendous songwriting and a new, contemporary spark. The consummate storyteller, Russell has amassed a devoted following that cherishes his vivid, novelistic tales evoking the spirit of the American experience in tightly constructed, panoramic vignettes. Among his most ardent fans are fellow artists Johnny Cash, Doug Sahm, k.d. lang, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Iris Dement, Dave Alvin, Joe Ely, Ian Tyson, Nanci Griffith, and Guy Clark have all recorded Tom's songs. Produced by Tom Russell and Craig Schumacher (Neko Case, Iron & Wine, Calexico).

Matisyahu - Light (08/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/270164651/MatLig_Vic.zip

Few artists make an impact as complete as the one Matisyahu made with his Top 40 smash "King Without a Crown": Here was a true original, the song announced--a Hasidic Jewish musician from New York City singing reggae songs about his religious devotion. Fans responded to this one-of-a-kind voice, too, driving Youth, Matisyahu's Grammy-nominated 2006 studio disc, to the top spot on Billboard's reggae albums chart.

True originals, though, don't stay put for long, and on his bold new album, Light, 29-year-old Matisyahu proves that there's much more to his artistry than might initially meet the eye. "As my musical tastes have grown I have been re-discovering my sound and my voice," he says.

Light is anything but safe. Produced by David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Sublime, the Strokes), the 14-track collection covers a dizzying amount of stylistic ground, from hard-edged dancehall ("Smash Lies") and ska-inflected New Wave ("We Will Walk") to laidback pop-rock ("So Hi So Lo") and acoustic folk-soul ("I Will Be the Light"). While reggae is far from absent here--see the old-school toasting in "Motivate"--Light finds Matisyahu edging away from his comfort zone into more daring territory. "Being an artist is about being sensitive to how the world resonates inside you and then being able to express it," he says. "This process is an ever-changing one."

BLOODSHOT BILL--'TRASHY, FREASY, ROCKIN' BILLY' 2006.

slika

Over the years the US rockabilly changed into UK dominated neo-rockabilly and psychobilly that often include influences from metal, punk and other sub genres. Many of the bands evolved into something far away from any "-billy" genre and so did their audience. Bloodshot Bill however didn't evolve that way at all. The man plays a genuine style of psychobilly of should I say "Psychotic Rockabilly" that is best compared with the sound of Hazel Adkins, The Legendary Stardust Cowboy or Joe Bennet's "Black Slacks". This is also the sound that inspired a band like the Cramps and that is quite hearable

Bloodshot Bill comes surprisingly from Quebec, Canada where he goes onstage as a one men's band. No computers, no overdubs…he simply does it all and yes he can play guitar and drum at the same time. Tunes like "I Knew it" or "Reach That woman" are quite impressing. While the album also includes a hand full of covers, the majority of the songs are self-penned. Of course one has to keep in mind that his psychotic voice takes the music in a totally different direction sometimes. However on "Ring the bell" the man delivers an authentic fifties sound I enjoyed. Low-fi one-track recording is the keyword when talking about bloodshot Bill, something that is best enjoyed on tracks like "Loosen Up" or "Loaded."
The album also includes one un-credited tune the traditional gospel "I saw the light"

While his sound is certainly an acquired taste, the man has a steady fan base in Quebec and surroundings. Trashy; Greasy Rockin' Billy is not the latest effort of Bloodshot Bill, cause at this moment of writing the man released a new record and to be honest, it is one I'm looking forward to

Zoot Woman - Things Are What They Used to Be (2009)

slika

Zoot Woman are a British electronic music group made up of Adam Blake, Johnny Blake and Stuart Price. Known for their live shows, the group has gained a worldwide following. The live line-up includes Jasmin O'Meara, (bass, vocals, synthesizers). With 'Living in a Magazine’ Zoot Woman established themselves on the music scene. Credited by many within the industry as one of the most important forerunners of electroclash. The band in full generally disassociates itself from the largely instrumental material released by Adam Blake and Stuart Price before adding Johnny Blake to the lineup and taking a new direction stylistically. This is evidenced by the lack of its coverage on the official website.

Price and Blake also work under the alias Paper Faces for remixes and have reworked tracks for Zoot Woman songs as well as other established recording artists such as Madonna, Scissor Sisters and producers such as Felix Da Housecat and Pete Tong.

Zoot Woman's Hope in the Mirror was featured in the soundtrack to Mack Dawg Productions 2004 snowboard video Chulksmack, in Jussi Oksanen section of the film. Their track Grey Day appeared in David Benedek's film 91 Words for Snow (2006, Blank Paper Studio). This helped spread the word to the snowboard community.

In December 2007, a new single titled We Won't Break was released as a free download on RCRD LBL. The single was accompanied by a music video directed by Mirjam Baker and Michael Kren. In March 2008, the band made a second single (Live In My Head) available for download on their MySpace page. Both songs are featured on their upcoming third album, Things Are What They Used To Be, which has been confirmed to be released on 21st August 2009.

Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson - Break Up (09/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/270183560/PY_SCBU_Vic.zip

Includes eight original compositions by Pete/Scarlett in the spirit of Serge Gainsbourg's recording with Brigitte Bardot. The album re-enacts the tempestuous course of a love affair on the rocks. Featuring an interpretation of the art-rock classic 'I Am the Cosmos' by the late Chris Bell co-founder of Big Star. 'Break Up' is Johansson's 2nd release with Atco, following her debut, 'Anywhere I Lay My Head'. The album had its genesis in the aftermath of a breakup in 2006. After Yorn was unable to sleep for a week, he finally dozed off, only to wake with a start just minutes later. What had awakened him was a dream. "I sat up in bed, and the whole thing was in my head, fully formed," Yorn says, sounding as if he still doesn't quite believe it. "I suddenly felt like I really needed to make a record in the style of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. Not that it had to sound like that, but it had to be a guy-and-girl conceptual thing. So then I asked myself, 'Who's Brigitte Bardot today? It's Scarlett Johansson.'" Yorn gave Johansson a call. Intrigued by his out-of-the-blue invitation, she decided to go for it. "Pete told me that he'd had a dream that we recorded an album together," she recalls, "and with that momentum, he had written eight songs that he'd wanted to record pretty low-key. I've always loved Pete's voice and have been friends with him for some time. It sounded like an interesting little adventure. He used the Serge and Brigitte recordings as reference for the ambiance he was trying to capture. He liked the idea of two people vocalizing their relationship through duets."

Saint Etienne-Foxbase Alpha (Deluxe Edition) 2009.

slika

Eighteen years old this September, Foxbase Alpha remains one of the most dewy-fresh debut albums ever made. Newly relocated from suburban Croydon to Tufnell Park, north London, schoolfriends Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs set about making what Stanley has called "a time capsule of our lives in that year". Foxbase Alpha (named after a childhood in-joke about a place filled with gorgeous people) is both retro and modern, a love letter and a scrapbook, a compendium of private passions from Dusty Springfield to King Tubby, David Mamet to football, C86 to ambient house, and London, always London. The packaging, with its Jon Savage sleevenotes and Smiths-inspired gallery of 60s icons, is gorgeous, and an eclectic bonus CD of singles, B-sides and offcuts enhances the sense of joyous adventure.
The effect is to invite the listener into a world slightly warmer, brighter and more exciting than the real one. And despite its many American influences, its Swinging London romanticism anticipated Britpop. The balearic reinvention of Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart may be its most celebrated moment but London Belongs to Me's NW1 fantasia is the album's awestruck heart: Sarah Cracknell coos the opening line, "took a tube to Camden Town", like she's Alice passing through the looking glass.

Diafrix - Concrete Jungle (08/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/270208695/DfCJ_Vic.zip

One of the country's most explosive and eclectic live acts have finally completed their immensely anticipated debut album, Concrete Jungle. Following on from their successful EP in 2006, Concrete Jungle has taken Diafrix's iconic concoction of hip-hop, African roots & story-telling and developed it into a truly world-class product.

The group; which was born in the sketchy Melbourne suburb of Footscray - comprises of two frontmen, Momo and Azmarino, both of whom are African refugees but have lived through struggles which are worlds apart. Momo arrived in Australia with his family at the age of three after fleeing their homeland of the Comoros islands. His background and culture left him feeling isolated in a community which was not yet accustomed to African migration. Azmarino, on the other hand, originally hails from Eritrea but didn't arrive in Australia until earlier this decade – after a life of citizenship hunting throughout countries like Jordan, Italy and Switzerland. Definitely not the typical story of an Aussie band, but one that reflects an underrepresented and growing community of first generation Australians.

Diafrix return with the incredible title track from their upcoming debut album, Concrete Jungle. The wise words come from the lips of two African refugees who have had more than their fair share of individual struggles. Rather than accepting the lay of the cards, this is an anthem for pushing through the hard times and coming out on top.

Diafrix come with a one-in-a-million story which has shaped them into a one-in-a-million act, and Concrete Jungle is the gripping first chapter in what promises to be an incredible saga.

Sean Bones - Rings (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/270204291/SeBoRi_Vic.zip

Set to deliver a sun-soaked debut of Reggae-infused indie pop via Frenchkiss Records this July, Brooklyn’s Sean Bones is teasing the release with a gargantuan summer anthem called “Dancehall.” Unveiled this morning, AOL Spinner likened it to The Police and The Clash, while RCRDLBL went for a Vampire Weekend nod and a slightly more exotic bridge to Toots & the Maytals.

Recorded by Jon Spencer knob-minder, Jay Braun, Rings runs the gamut from sturdy rocksteady grooves to sly Spector-esque pop; Afrobeat bounce to reggaeton, disco, and so much more. And of course, there’s the Norah Jones connection. Sullivan spent last summer in Jamaica shooting a film opposite the Grammy award winner. Wah Do Dem – patois for “What They Do” – is set to premiere this June at the LA Film Festival, and served as he launching pad for a musical relationship between Sullivan and Jones, who contributes to Rings’ gorgeous album-closer “Turn Them.”

Caitlin Cary & Thad Cockrell - Begonias (2005)

mp3~192kpbs | 73MB | 49:35 min.
While Caitlin Cary's solo albums have made it abundantly clear she can make splendid music by her lonesome, there's no arguing that she collaborates very well indeed, as her work with Whiskeytown and Tres Chicas has proven. For Begonias, Cary teamed up with another gifted singer/songwriter, her friend Thad Cockrell, and the two mesh beautifully on these sessions. Cockrell's voice bears a slight resemblance to Cary's old vocal partner Ryan Adams on this set, and his lonesome tenor blends perfectly with the sweet ache of Cary's instrument; the beauty of their harmonies alone would make this an album worth hearing, but that's hardly Begonias's only virtue. Cary and Cockrell wrote most of these songs together, and they've conjured up a handful of gorgeous meditations on love and its absence, and "Whatever You Want," "Two Different Things," and "Something Less or Something More" reveal a quiet strength and passion that's nearly heartbreaking in its power. The album doesn't rock out much, but "Second Option" shows they know how when they're of a mind, and the backing combo offers marvelously sympathetic support, especially Pete Finney and Pat Buchanan on guitars and Logan Matheny on percussion. And Cary and Cockrell's take on the old Percy Sledge chestnut "Warm & Tender Love" is so beautifully realized that it's enough to make you forget the truly great original. Begonias is an album that was produced on a modest scale, but its beauties and rewards are tremendous, and one can only hope this is the first in a long series of collaborative efforts between this two very compatible artists. -- AMG

"Jeffrey Luck Lucas is the downcast balladeer in A Touch of Evil's lost cantina scene—an honorable stoic bearing witness to border town badness even as his own demons hatch." —Performer Magazine
-------------

Born, raised, and "lowered" in Indiana, West Texas, and Los Angeles respectively, Jeffrely Luck Lucas is known as a "musician's musician" and one of San Francisco's best kept secrets.

In addition to recent dark folk albums such as What We Whisper and Hell Then Divine, Jeffrey Luck Lucas is a classically trained cellist and founding member of 80's garage band The Morlocks (Epitaph, Voxx, Midnight). He's shared bills with Alejandro Escovedo, Jolie Holland, Willard Grant Conspiracy, Ray Manzarek (The Doors), Maria McKee, and Eleni Mandell.

Lucas' longtime recording partner is producer and engineer Desmond Shea (Court & Spark, Neurosis, Dieselhed). Lucas and Shea are known for stellar arrangements and studio craft, and together the two attract a multitude of talent from the Bay Area indie music community including Janice Tanaka (L7, Pink), David Phillips (Tom Waits), Tim Mooney (American Music Club), Wendy Allen (The Court & Spark), and Sean Coleman (Kelley Stoltz, Sunshine Club).

Jeffrey has been featured on Tract Records' Eye of the Beholder compilation with his song "Her Pale Silver Eyes," as well as their Will Oldham tribute on which he covered "Agnes, Queen of Sorrow". His song, "Cascade" was featured on the covermount CD of issue #14 of the British music magazine Comes with a Smile. Another song "Whiteout" is featured on the Italian label Awful Bliss's upcoming "Songs for Another Place" compilation.

Jeffrey Luck Lucas - What We Whisper (2006)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/270899491/JLLWWW_Vic.zip

Darkly gorgeous, unexpectedly uplifting, these nine slow-moving songs traverse desolate nighttime landscapes where conversations in road-houses and at neon-lit kitchen tables drift suddenly from trivialities to life-altering truth. The coffee turns cold, the cigarettes burn down, and all of the sudden someone you love is looking you in the eye, demanding, "Tell me why / your kindest words are just shy of lies." Jeffrey Luck Lucas, a SF-based songwriter who got his start with garage-Kinks The Morlocks before earning a masters in cello composition and performance, is not one to shy away from the confrontational in this, his second solo album. Still, his voice is so gentle and mournful, his arrangements so supple and glowing that you don't see the knife right away...or perhaps, if you're unlucky, at all.

These songs are subtly constructed, autumnal elements like harmonica and accordion surging and receding behind Lucas' weary harmonies. "Just Like Moths," one of the album's most beautiful cuts, spends most of its duration as a sigh turned into verse, as exhausted and unhoping as a song can be. But then, without warning, the song builds into something like triumph, as pedal steel joins with a nearly joyful chorus. "In the Stars' Whirling" is stranger, more enveloping in its gradual billow of string tones, the ice-clear tinkling of keyboards, as Lucas sings of watching a loved one sleep and wondering how another man kisses her.

Lucas' voice – in the same soulfully rough family as Will Oldham or Micah Hinson – is a large part of this album's appeal. Still, its lone instrumental offering, "Griftos Muertos," has its own menacing charm, with vibrating, high saw tones dancing a tango with accordion and junkyard drums. Moreover, backing musicians David Phillips (on pedal steel) and Wendy Allen of Court and Spark (harmonies) lend velvety textures to Lucas' otherwise sparse songs.

What We Whisper is a world of darkness, poignant regrets and unlooked-for late night solace. Its songs feel simple the way the language in the King James Bible seems simple, as if they had always been there and could not be any other way.

Scott H. Biram - Graveyard Shift (2006)

mp3 VBR V0~275kpbs | 90MB | 45:39 min.
Scott H. Biram has a sound as gritty as sandpaper. The one-man band owns his own style, which meshes the raw muddiness of blues, the rowdiness and down-to-earth simplicity of country, and the mutiny of punk. And with all this variety existing in nearly every song on Graveyard Shift, no two songs sound exactly alike. In fact, most of them are so starkly different from the next that it's hard to believe it's the same album. The title track is a raucous, messy punk-blues fusion and it yields to "Lost Case of Being Found," a mellow alt-country toe-tapper. The rest of the album follows suit, rebelliously howling and meandering through heartsick ballads, highway songs, and salutes to inebriation. Graveyard Shift is all over the place, but it's never chaotic. It makes perfect sense. No matter how different each song might or might not be from the next, Biram's soulful presence and gritty vocals tie everything together. It's tempting to try to compare Biram to other artists, in order to help describe such a unique musician. In Biram's case, comparisons are simply too vague. Though while listening to Graveyard Shift, one will likely be reminded of certain artists as unique as Biram (though he is a one-man band, which is exceedingly rare). His eclectic eccentricity is reminiscent of Beck; many of his songs are punked-out neo-traditionalist country -- something he and Hank Williams III have in common; and the unprocessed blues riffs and unique rhythm that occupies much of his sound could stand up to a more intoxicated Lightnin' Hopkins. Biram's unique blend of his own attitude and a variety of musical styles make him accessible to all types of music aficionados. Biram's high-energy live performances are said to be the only way to truly experience his music, but Graveyard Shift will give you an idea of the unique brilliance you've been missing. -- AMG

Martha Scanlan - The West Was Burning (2007)

Martha Scanlan was a member of the contemporary old-time string band the Reeltime Travelers, who probably are best known for their appearance on the T-Bone Burnett-produced Cold Mountain soundtrack. For her first solo outing, Scanlan keeps one foot in the past and the other in the present. There is plenty of fiddle, mandolin, Dobro, and banjo playing on this disc (often courtesy of producer Dirk Powell), but Scanlan doesn't limit her sound to acoustic instruments. The second track, "Get Right Church," is a robust, foot-stomping rendition of the Rev. James Cleveland gospel classic that is more Saturday night than Sunday morning. Later on, her original "Isabella" nicely balances front-porch fiddling with juke joint guitar. This song of sisterhood also slips in some subtle political references, name-checking the mother of civil rights figure Emmitt Till as well as Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, a female Native American political activist who was mysteriously murdered in the '70s. Scanlan doesn't hammer her listeners with her music, but takes an appealing low-key approach to both her songwriting and arrangements. The warm-hearted, winter-set courting tune "Walkin'" makes a simple yet poetic observation: "Ordinary is as ordinary sees/The quiet beauty in the shapes of trees." She uses the evocatively down-to-earth lyric "Somehow packing up your things/Didn't seem to bring/The peace I'd hoped to find" to describe post-breakup angst in "I Don't Even Have to Ask." Her songs are also very much rooted in nature and the outdoors, whether physically (the bittersweet rancher's tale "Up on the Divide") or metaphorically (the picturesque love song "Seeds of the Pine"). Trees are a recurring image, popping up in almost all of her original tunes. Besides her own earthy, folksy tunes, she also tackles the obscure Bob Dylan number "Went to See the Gypsy" and conjures up comparisons to Emmylou Harris on her tender, spare cover of the spiritual "Ten Thousand Charms." The Powell instrumental "Call Me Shorty" makes for a curious inclusion, as this bluegrass interlude seemingly serves -- at least on this disc -- as a showcase for the backing band. Still, Scanlan's unpretentious but thoroughly charming debut should appeal to fans of Gillian Welch and Iris DeMent and lovers of other Americana angels. -- AMG

http://rapidshare.com/files/271388212/IMEB_Vic.zip

Indie singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson will release her highly anticipated new album, "Everybody," on August 25th on her own Cabin 24 Records. The first single "Maybe" has been released last July 14th.

"Everybody" is the eagerly awaited follow-up to her 2007 release, "Girls and Boys," which spawned the hit single "The Way I Am" and launched Ingrid into the mainstream consciousness.

The New York Times describes Michaelson's unique musical approach as "soulful, idiosyncratic," while Rolling Stone loves her "sweet but mellow lounge-pop harmonies." On "Everybody" Michaelson showcases a matured point of view as she explores a new relationship with the idea of love, one that's less crushed-out girl and more self-realized, independent woman. "'Everybody' - which is about a big idea," explains Paste Magazine, "chronicles a relationship so intense and volatile that both lovers lose themselves within it. 'Everybody' is truly everybody's."

Well known for her live performances that balance honest emotion with her own quirky humor, Ingrid will be heading out on a fall tour of intimate venues to present live for the first time brand new songs from her forthcoming album. While her fall tour schedule will be announced soon, dates have been confirmed for September 16th in New York, October 7th in Los Angeles and October 26th in Chicago. Ingrid has remained fiercely independent, releasing all of her music via her own Cabin 24 label which has sold nearly 400,000 albums and over 1.5 million singles to date. Cabin 24 Records will release "Everybody" as part of a unique marketing and distribution arrangement via Original Signal/Universal Motown.

Ingrid has appeared on Good Morning America, Live with Regis & Kelly, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, NPR's Talk of the Nation, Fuse TV and was the first unsigned musician ever selected as a Vh1 "You Oughta Know" artist. She has been the subject of print features in publications as varied as the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and even graced the cover of Billboard Magazine, as the new face of the music industry. Michaelson's most recent project, a compilation of new songs, covers, live favorites and demos was entitled "BE OK" and supported Stand Up To Cancer, an organization created to urgently move cancer research forward with the help of the public.

"...A grassroots phenomenon that's climbed from obscurity into the upper echelons of iTunes."
- Entertainment Weekly

"...Melodic, evocative tunes...songs that offer visions of love both giddy and grim, sung in a voice that is by turns whimsical and cutting." - Boston Globe

"...It seems unlikely that Michaelson's insinuating croon, smart lyrics and clever arrangements will wear out their welcome anytime soon." - The Washington Post

Missy Higgins - On A Clear Night (2007)

mp3 320kpbs | 88MB | 37:54 min.
On a Clear Night debuted at the top of the Australian charts in May 2007, knocking Silverchair's Young Modern down to the number two spot and solidifying Missy Higgins' status as an Aussie A-lister. Combining sass with sweet sentiment, the album marks a progression for the young songwriter, who was introduced in 2004 as the Melbourne equivalent of Vanessa Carlton. There's more in Higgins' cannon than piano-heavy ballads, though, and her sophomore disc relies heavily on the acoustic guitar, which lends a saucy swagger to songs like "100 Round the Bends" and "Secret." Higgins' lyrics aren't overtly erotic, but there's more than a hint of sex in the way she sings those two tracks, punctuating her endearingly accented vocals with moments of brazen, full-throated belting. She's part Sarah McLachlan and part Amy Winehouse, a family friendly singer with hipster appeal and, perhaps, a hint of diva potential. And lest this combination seem a bit too calculated, Higgins is still capable of crafting songs like "Sugarcane," a lilting piece of pastoral pop that builds on the template of 2004's Sound of White. "Angela," "I'm Going North," and "Forgive Me" all continue that thread -- but here, Higgins' piano remains de-emphasized in favor of an earthy, folksy instrumental blend. Guitar, banjo, mandolin, and acoustic bass are tastefully swirled together by former Crowded House producer Mitchell Froom, who knows when to adorn the songs with layers of sound and when to sharpen the focus on Higgins' ever-improving voice. Like her fellow countrymen in Silverchair, Missy Higgins' hometown popularity doesn't fully translate overseas, where American audiences have yet to replace those vague Vanessa Carlton comparisons with a proper understanding of her folksy, feisty, and altogether fun music. Nevertheless, On a Clear Night makes a very solid argument for reevaluation, and there's certainly no sophomore slump here. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:kvfyxzu5ldke

Red Heart The Ticker - For the Wicked (2006)

Paste Magazine - March 2007
Exceptionally pretty folk songs from a Vermont barn

Husband-and-wife alt-folk duo Red Heart the Ticker boasts oodles of Americana cred - they recorded their self-released debut, For the Wicked, in a drafty, post-and-beam Vermont barn, and vocalist/guitarist Robin MacArthur's song-hunting grandmother, Margaret, recorded for Moe Asch's Folkways in the early 1960's - but their songs are less concerned with indie whims than snow angels and leather boots and gravestones and moonlight and drinking and riding around in a Trans Am. The pair's songs (reminiscent of both Gillian Welch and Will Oldham) are dim and haunting, full of winter melancholy, wispy melodies and plans for escape - on "One Last Tear" MacArthur coos, "I'm gonna wear my best boots, good for dancing, and take you where we used to go/Gonna drink corn liquor 'til the sun comes up/And walk on home real slow."

Red Heart The Ticker - Oh My! Mountains Below (2009)

Red Heart the Ticker is the musical collaboration of Robin MacArthur and Tyler Gibbons, a husband and wife duo from Marlboro, Vermont. Their music, often compared to Will Oldham, Gillian Welch, and Iron and Wine, is, in many ways, a reconciliation between their verging musical tastes: Robin’s penchant for tradition influenced sixties folk and twangy, old-fashioned country music, and Tyler’s love of jazz fusion and esoteric sixties rock. A couple long before they began playing music together, RHTT was born when, in 2005, they built themselves a cabin in the woods of Vermont and lived there without running water. As the long cold months of winter drew on they decided they would have to start playing music together to keep themselves from going batty with cabin fever. Red Heart the Ticker (red heart for warmth, ticker for rhythm,) is what was born.

Joshua James - Build Me This (09/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/271773551/JJBMT_Vic.zip

Joshua James has been writing and singing songs for only six short years, but the 25-year-old heartland poet has the perspective of a wise, old soul.

On his second album, Build Me This, the follow-up to his critically acclaimed The Sun is Always Brighter, produced by industry veteran Shannon Edgar, James expands his musical palette to foreboding doom-laden hard rock. Progressing from folkish harmonies, to country twang, world beats and southern home rock while further exploring themes of spiritual searching.

Possessing a whispery and intimate vocal style that works its way into the ear peacefully and directly, Joshua James is pitched midway between seminal influences like Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

“I find solace and beauty in darkness and depression,” admits James, who grew up in his native Lincoln, Nebraska, skateboarding and sneaking listens to music his parents banned, like classic rockers Jim Morrison and The Doors, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, “But there are contrasts to everything. You have to combine the sweet and salty, the ugly and beautiful. Music is very therapeutic for me. It’s all about making a connection with humanity, with the audience, in ways that I normally wouldn’t be able to.”

Over the past three years, James has been doing just that. His debut was the #1 Folk Album on iTunes, and “FM Radio,” a song about a childhood friend coping with the death of his father, amassed more than 150,000 downloads as part of an iTunes promotion. In addition to performances at Sundance, SXSW and CMJ, James has toured with John Mayer, David Gray and Ani DiFranco, winning legions of fans along the way.

“I feel strongly about the things I sing about,” nods Joshua. “I want people to know how I feel, which sounds kind of dumb, because who cares how I feel? If someone feels similarly, though, that’s what I’m looking for. That’s the most important thing. If you can relate to what I’m going through, then I’ve achieved my goal.”

The album title, Build Me This, refers to his dream of salvation. “It’s my way of asking God to show himself,” declares James. “To prove he exists. Do something. Give me a sign. It’s a call to whatever or whoever is out there. I don’t want him to strike me down or paralyze me, just give me something to believe.”

Aside from the spiritual, Build Me This is also about the difficulties of everyday relationships, the inadvertent hurt we cause to those we love. “Magazine” deals with the pain of separation (“Go take your bags to New York City, call me when your plane arrives/I’ll feed the children, wash the dishes, I’ll keep the house lookin’ nice/Well don’t you worry, everything’s gonna be all right.”), while “In the Middle” laments a shattered romance (“You’ve tried so hard to forget me/You burnt the letters I’d made/Though my memory has been dyin’/I hope the feeling still remains”).

On the stage, though, is where Joshua James’ music comes alive and reveals its true intent, which is about drawing people into his insular universe, a sense of mystic that only the truly great ones can communicate.

“Perhaps the darkness comes out a little more often that I’d like,” he offers “but that’s just where I gravitate to when I’m writing. I don’t usually try to tackle specific subjects; it’s usually about what I’m feeling at the time. Things start to come out, then they form a story and a reason, and that’s how things evolve. I’m influenced by everything… by life, by love, by hate, by music.”

Willie Nelson - American Classic (08/2009)

Legendary singer Willie Nelson American Classic is his first album of standards since his landmark 1978 masterpiece Stardust, and his solo debut for Blue Note Records. Produced by Tommy LiPuma, American Classic features special guest appearances by Norah Jones and Diana Krall, string arrangements by Johnny Mandel, and a top shelf backing band that includes Nelson’s longtime sidekick Mickey Raphael on harmonica, and such notable jazzmen as pianist Joe Sample, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Lewis Nash. While it’s common now for mature pop artists to attempt to put their own stamp on the American Songbook, Nelson practically invented the approach. He set the standard for playing the standards with Stardust, perhaps this “outlaw” entertainer’s most daring move. The album went on to become the most successful album of his career thus far. It reached #1 on the Billboard’s Country Albums chart; racked up more than five million in sales; earned Nelson a Country Male Vocal Performance Grammy; and, most significantly, helped to transform a colourful, middle-aged cult figure into a mainstream star.

Loudon Wainwright III, together with producer Dick Connette, has created one of the most ambitious projects of his career with the 2 CD set High Wide & Handsome - a grand gathering of songs, both old and original, revisiting the life, times and recorded legacy of legendary singer and banjo picker Charlie Poole (1892-1931). The music ranges from old-timey to dixieland, from parlor songs to acapella gospel, a compendium of the strains that have created and continue to create American popular music. Greil Marcus wrote in his notes for the project, "Poole might have been waiting all these years for someone to talk back to him so completely in his own language; Wainwright might have been waiting since he first heard Charlie Poole to get up the nerve to do it." Guests on the album include Martha Wainwright, Rufus Wainwright, Sloan Wainwright, Lucy Wainwright Roche, the Roches, and Chris Thile.
