Tim Buckley - Live at the Folklore Center, NYC: March 6th, 1967 (08/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/272954900/TBL_tFCNYC_Vic.zip

This previously unreleased recording was captured by folk impresario Izzy Young at his famed Folklore Center located at 321 Sixth Avenue, which served as a nexus for up-and-coming singer-songwriters during the folk boom of the late '60s. The entire night's concert, performed in front of about 35 people, is presented in its original running order of 16 songs, six of which are Tim Buckley compositions that have never appeared on any studio or live album. The CD package includes an unpublished interview with Buckley conducted by Izzy Young on March 17th & 18th, 1967, along with new notes from Young. The album was produced for release by Tompkins Square label's Josh Rosenthal in cooperation with Buckley's Estate, and mastered from the original tapes by Grammy-winning engineers Steve Rosenthal, Warren Russell-Smith and Jamie Howarth.

Tim Buckley (1947-1975) was among the most adventurous and influential singer-songwriters of the `60's and `70's, releasing nine studio albums in his career. Buckley's music continues to deeply inspire new fans and artists with each passing year. 'Live at the Folklore Center', the earliest live recording among several others commercially available, showcases Buckley in an intimate, solo acoustic setting, highlighting his magical guitar playing and soaring vocal style.

Lucero - 1372 Overton Park (10/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/272939793/LuOP_Vic.zip

Lucero's sixth studio album and major label debut, 1372 Overton Park, is due October 6 on Universal/Republic Records. Produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem) and featuring horn arrangements by legendary Memphis session player Jim Spake (Al Green, John Hiatt, Solomon Burke, Cat Power), the record marks a decided turn toward the Memphis soul sound that has long informed the band's records from afar. 1372 Overton Park follows the band's 2006 release, Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers, hailed by Pitchfork as "the best showcase for the band's taut dynamic yet."

The new album's name comes from the address of the Memphis loft in which all four band members lived, practiced and even recorded portions of their 2003 release That Much Further West (the history of the space itself is even more colorful—in the `70s, 1372 Overton Park was a karate dojo where local resident Elvis Presley, among others, took lessons). Over recent years band members have gradually moved out leaving lead singer and guitarist Ben Nichols the sole resident of the space until word finally came down that the building would be sold and demolished. Almost as if marking the end of an era not only for the building but for the band as well, this record turns the page and signals a strong move toward the Memphis soul sound that has long served as an influence for the group. Nichols explains, "When [saxophonist] Jim Spake put that first horn track down, we began thinking of the record as having a certain sound. We heard pieces of Memphis history being played over our songs and it floored us and we just went with it."

While 1372 Overton Park serves as a love letter to Memphis and its musical heritage, the band has far from abandoned the country/rock/punk influences that they've become known for over their previous five records and countless tour dates in front of rabid fans. "I think the fact that we don't claim a genre is very important to what Lucero is," according to Nichols. "There are too many rules in punk rock. Too many rules in country music. We're hard headed and…god damn if we don't do things the way we want to do them."

Sparks - The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman (2009)

Sparks’ Ron and Russell Mael have been commissioned by the Swedish National Public radio Sveriges Radio to write and produce an original radio musical. Sparks’ creation, “The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman,” is a musical fantasy based on the internationally acclaimed film director Ingmar Bergman.

The radio musical will be broadcast in Sweden in August 2009. An album with the original Swedish version will be released as a limited edition in Sweden. An English version will subsequently be released internationally.

“As Americans we have almost abandoned radio drama and it was truly exhilarating for us to work in a medium where the imagination of the listener is so integral a part of the work. Aside from our love of Bergman, we have a love of Orson Welles and his use of the medium of radio was something that inspired us in this work.” – Ron Mael

Though his films’ themes have traditionally centred on matters of death, faith, God’s existence, and the struggle to find love and meaning in our lives, Bergman is confronted in the musical by the lure of a mythological Hollywood seemingly at odds with all he stands for—a Hollywood that tempts him and ultimately tries to control him. What starts as an exploration by Bergman of the possible mutual benefits of his working in Hollywood turns into a Kafkaesque nightmare, a nightmare ended with the aid of a most unlikely saviour.

“When Sveriges Radio approached us with the idea of creating our own musical for the radio, we were excited about the prospect yet hesitant at trying to figure a way to successfully fulfil their only restrictions with the project: that it incorporates the Swedish language in some manner. Once we came up with the idea of placing one of the ultimate Swedish icons and one of our favourite film directors, Ingmar Bergman, in a fantasy setting we became extremely excited about this musical and knew we were on to something special.” – Russell Mael

International broadcasts of the musical are being sourced and Sparks are planning to present the musical in a live format as well hoping to see the project be made into a motion picture.

“Although The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman was commissioned as a radio musical, we always saw it in cinematic terms. We hope that the listeners will be able, in their own minds, to see the same movie that we wrote on hearing it on the radio and that at some point an actual film can be made of this piece. We would also like to present The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman as a theatre piece and perhaps this will be the next stage show for Sparks.”

Jim O'Rourke - The Visitor (09/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/273243839/JORtV_Vic.zip

It’s been eight years in the making but this indie legend makes his long-awaited return with a sublime solo effort in the form of The Visitor. All-instrumental and played solely by his own masterful hand, the record is a series of musical interludes driven by picked and plucked acoustic guitars, organs, pianos, shakers, wind and strings. It’s a pretty subdued affair throughout but displays the expertise and awe-inspiring musicianship we have come to expect from the revered collaborator and producer. Tipped as the sequel to 1997’s Bad Timing, it is a must for fans and anyone interested in the more avant-garde side of indie.

It came as something of a surprise the other day to discover that it’s been something like eight years since Jim O’Rourke released a new solo album. In the interim, he’s not been entirely quiet, as involvement with Sonic Youth and the Loose Fur project with Jeff Tweedy and Glenn Kotche, as well as sundry other lower-profile activities prove.

Around the time he left Sonic Youth, however, a story began to circulate that O’Rourke had moved to Japan and retired from music-making. As it turns out, only the first part of the rumour was true, as this excellent interview points out;http://ronsen.org/monkminkpinkpunk/15/orourke.html perhaps, after so much intensive work over the preceding decade or so, he just needed a break.

“The Visitor” is his wonderful, though perhaps predictably eccentric, return to action. Unlike the tightly formed rock songs of “Insignificance”, “The Visitor” consists of one unravelling 38-minute instrumental piece, harking back to the textures of 1997’s “Bad Timing”, or perhaps a vast cousin to “Ghost Ship In A Storm” from “Eureka”.

It begins much in the style of “Bad Timing”, with a John Fahey-ish guitar figure; later, elements of the piece are as reminiscent of late-period Fahey (“Red Cross”, notably) as the more canonical earlier work. Soon, though, the music opens up and surges forward, as O’Rourke keeps trying out different combinations of instruments, as if trying to find a harmonious way of synthesising at least some of his massively eclectic musical interests.

At times, then, it recalls a kind of folk symphony, a heavenly realisation of modern composition rescored for Laurel Canyon habitués. Picking out a bunch of possible reference points, I’m reminded of ‘70s Grateful Dead (“Weather Report Suite”, perhaps), Van Dyke Parks’ “Song Cycle” (a big O’Rourke favourite, I seem to remember), the Takoma pianist George Winston.

Often, when the simple theme starts to gather momentum, O’Rourke pulls away from the meticulous arrangements and introduces a kind of loose punctuation, where the music is pensive and hesitant; hovering somewhere between minimalist composition and improv. It’s a measure of O’Rourke’s multi-disciplinary skills and sleight-of-hand that it’s tricky to tell how, exactly, “The Visitor” has been constructed: as a studio collage of part-arranged, part-improvised fragments; as a formal whole; or, as I suspect, some intangible hybrid of both .

Whatever, it’s full of beautiful and engrossing music, and doubtless plenty of musical jokes and references that I’m not learned enough to spot - though I should say that O’Rourke’s expansive gifts of melody, arrangement and production make this a warm and rewarding listen even if you’ve only a fraction of his musical knowledge. Favourite bits this morning: a brief flutter of prog rock guitar, which sharply fades away to reveal a banjo moving artfully in its tracks; and a lush passage about 12 minutes in where the piano and Hammond combine in a way that wouldn’t shame Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. A lot to take in here, though.

Grand Archives - Keep in Mind Frankenstein (09/2009)

Grand Archives’ second full-length album, like much of its predecessor, was crafted at Paradise Sound in Index, WA with help from producer Ben Kersten (who also recorded The Grand Archives, the band’s 2008 debut). A few friends dropped by during recording. Brooke’s former Carissa’s Wierd cohorts, Jenn Ghetto and Sera Cahoone, sang backing vocals. The gorgeous streaks of pedal steel across the wistful sweep of “Oslo Novelist” come courtesy of Jason Kardong. For the most part, Grand Archives played everything. Especially the weird bits. It’s a little darker than the first record and opens with the bittersweet elegy “Topsy’s Revenge,” inspired by the infamous 1903 newsreel footage of Thomas Edison electrocuting a rogue Coney Island elephant. Songs like “Dig That Crazy Grave,” a buoyant ditty redolent of Southern California and summer afternoons, and the insistent, soaring Silver Among the Gold find their place here as well. It’s an album made up of disparate elements artfully fit together and brought to life with affecting results: Keep in Mind Frankenstein.

Volcano Choir - Unmap (09/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/273670415/VoChUn_Vic.zip

Unmap marks the debut full-length from Volcano Choir, the collaboration between Collections of Colonies of Bees and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver.
--
Volcano Choir is an assembly of Wisconsinites Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack, Justin Vernon, and Thomas Wincek. You might find these old friends also frequenting records and stages under different monikers, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Bon Iver. The collaboration predates the meteoric rise of Justin Vernon's Bon Iver project, with original songwriting dating back to the summer of 2005, right around the time the Bees first toured with Vernon's previous band DeYarmond Edison.

While entirely a studio record, the collection doesn't suffer from the overburdens of a digital pile up or over-thinking. Rather it breathes and convulses in equal measure, radiating an inherent dynamism found only in the voluntary bondage of intimacy. With influences ranging from David Sylvian and Steve Reich to Mahalia Jackson and Tom Waits, it might be more accurate to say the group's influence is music itself. You can hear it in the care and real love generously applied to each moment of Unmap. With the vibe of some intimate backwoods gospel, plus a spirit of patience and thoughtful repetition, the music of Volcano Choir is as dynamic as it is lovely.

Unmap ultimately came together over a weekend in November 2008 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, at Justin and Nate Vernon's recording studio. And while it is at its heart a record about the allure of being with people you need and making something with them, it is also a document created by musicians with rare gifts getting together to exorcise their ideas about beauty. This scaffolding of loops and off grid tempos for choral style vocals offers a state of continual surprise, call it unexpectation.

Lisa Germano - Magic Neighbor (09/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/273703476/LiGaMN_Vic.zip

Pop/Alt - We had actually never heard the term "sadcore" before we started reading one of many critical writeups on singer/songwriter and noted instrumentalist Lisa Germano. But we got the meaning immediately. Germano's brutally personal music is filled with dark, often disturbingly bitter lyricism and haunting, even menacing instrumental backing. She does indeed "walk that miraculously fine line between breathtaking terror and intoxicating beauty" as one admiring critic once wrote. "Magically there are these glimmers of hope that shine though, and the melodies are so instantly beguiling that you’re swept off your feet, but no matter how scary it gets she’s holding your hand."

New album, the intriguingly titled Magic Neighbor, delves again into the confessional bloodletting at the cool heart of Germano's most memorable works. But there also seems to be a few hopeful rays of light coming through this time. The observations have a wistful quality to them but are nonetheless as perceptive and deeply engaging as ever. Germano's albums have never been "easy" listens -- there's just too much pain on display. But the effect, particularly on her recent works, is an undeniably powerful and moving experience, made even more so in the still of the slowly brightening surroundings and Germano's achingly vulnerable voice.
http://www.directcurrentmusic.com/septe ... ghbor.html

Following the release of Lisa Germano s last album for Young God Records, In the Maybe World, and a good deal of subsequent touring, she hid herself away for a long while, and I was beginning todespair then suddenly this beautiful music started coming my way.I think this is one of her best albums yet. Snow is a jewel, ripe withher typical naked emotion a gentle elegy, exuding warmth and healing. The depth of feeling in her words and singing on this album istruly remarkable, and she never fails to tug at my heart. Somehow it ssad, wistful, and hopeful, all at once. It s very private, solitary music. It s deeply engaging, and when I listen to it I often stop what I m doingand drift off with it into its world. Time and troubles disappear fora short while. For some reason, her music reminds me of early Disneysongs fuzzy and dreamy. Thinking about it today, I also thought ofthe great and neglected music that Tom Waits did with CrystalGayle for the movie One from the Heart. In any event, she s resolutelyin her own space, and within that space she sculpts songs andminiature, delicate sonic environments like no one else. To sit downand spend some time inside her songs is a tremendously rewarding experience, and I hope you'll partake. Michael Gira / Young God

Hayes Carll - Little Rock (2005)

mp3 VBR~240kpbs | 73MB | 40:16 min.

Little Rock is only Hayes Carll's second album, but already he sounds like a veteran singer/songwriter. His tales of drifters and searchers, full of sharp observations and biting wit, invite comparisons to Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, and Robert Earl Keen, while his talent has brought collaborations with Ray Wylie Hubbard and Guy Clark. For a Texas singer/songwriter, those are big shoes to fill, but the Houston native fills them admirably. Carll has said, with tongue undoubtedly in cheek, that he chose to write about Little Rock because there are already so many songs written about Texas, but the terrific title track ably demonstrates that he has no need for a songwriter inferiority complex. The rip-roaring tune, featuring ace sessionman Kenny Vaughn's down-and-dirty guitar work, has Carll crisscrossing America searching for happiness before deciding to return to Little Rock. His up-tempo, rockier numbers -- like the aforementioned "Little Rock," the colorful front-porch rap "Down the Road Tonight" (that name-checks everyone from the Dali Llama to Michael Jackson), and the rollicking life-of-a-musician tune "Sit in With the Band" -- jump off the disc and immediately grab the listener's attention. But Carll is just as impressive on his quieter, more introspective tunes. "Long Way Home" is a touching ode to a departed friend, while the Earle-esque "Leave Here Standing" essays a relationship come undone. His gifts for observation and humor also are showcased on the vibrantly written opening track, "Wish I Hadn't Stayed So Long," and the western-style jazzy tale "Good Friends." The former is a bittersweet journey through his past, while the latter, a duet with Allison Moorer about his old high school buddies, finds Carll pondering, "where did all my good friends go." With just two albums under his belt, Hayes Carll has stepped into the forefront of the Texas troubadour scene. -- AMG

The Mountain Goats - The Life of the World to Come (10/2009)

Kod: Označi sve

The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle has been lauded by many folks, us included, as one of the best lyricists around. And for his next songwriting subject, he's drawing inspiration from a rather hefty source: the Bible. In fact, each song on his band's October release, The Life of the World to Come, earns its title from a specific verse.
Here's what Darnielle had to say about the whole venture in a statement:

"I guess the obvious question is going to be: 'John, have you had some sort of religous awakening?' and while I guess lots of people might want to be coy about answering that, that's never really my style, so: no. It's not like that. It's not some heavy-narrative-distance deal either, though, and it's not a screed. It's twelve new songs: twelve hard lessons the Bible taught me, kind of. More than that I'd want to wait to say until some people have heard it, which won't be long. Will there be more news soon, quite soon? Like, next week, even? Oh yes there will!"

The album features string arrangements by Final Fantasy's Owen Pallett.

A.A. Bondy - When the Devil's Loose (2009)

mp3 320kpbs | 79MB | 37:02 min.
When A.A. Bondy was lead singer for Verbena, the band was often accused of lifting large portions of its sound and style from the Rolling Stones (on its first album) and Nirvana (on Into the Pink). So with that history, it makes a certain sense that Bondy's second solo effort, When the Devil's Loose, recalls another artist, in this case Ryan Adams. The largest part of this comes from Bondy's voice, which bears a reasonable aural resemblance to Adams and his sweetly jaded tone, though Bondy shows off a bit more sonic weight and a less studied demeanor. But the music isn't all that far away from Adams either, though if this is by design rather than accident, at least Bondy has the good sense to embrace the straightforward and emotionally powerful sound of Heartbreaker rather than the more scattershot style of Adams' subsequent solo efforts. Most of When the Devil's Loose was cut with just a bassist (Macey Taylor) and drummer (Paul Buchignani) accompanying Bondy and his guitar, and the sessions have an air of gentle melancholy that brings out their graceful balance of blues and country accents; the minimal backing emphasizes the late-night vibe of the music, and the deep lonesome wanderings of the melodies are an ideal match for the downbeat storytelling of "On the Moon," "Oh the Vampyre," and "The Coal Hits the Fire." Bruce Watson's production is subtle and nonintrusive, and that works beautifully in favor of the songs, which clearly play best without excess gingerbread and with Bondy's voice and lyrics placed front and center. When the Devil's Loose might share some reference points with another singer/songwriter with a similar offhand affection for roots music, but A.A. Bondy seems to be developing a voice of his own despite all the surface similarities, and the result is a quietly powerful album of songs that cut deeper into the heart and soul than you might expect at first glance. -- AMG

There is no harmony like brotherly harmony. Something indelible in the weave of voices and play of sensibilities is stamped into the fraternal DNA and also stems from a lifetime of shared experiences. You can hear it in classic brother acts across the musical spectrum, from the Louvin Brothers to the Everly Brothers and on down the decades through the Wilson brothers (Beach Boys), the Davies brothers (Kinks), the Allman Brothers and even the Brothers Gibb (a.k.a., the Bee Gees). You can clearly hear fraternal magic at work in the songs of Scott and Seth Avett, better known as The Avett Brothers, as well.

That magic is abundantly evident on I and Love and You, The Avett Brothers’ big-label debut. Its 13 songs are delivered in a style that defies pigeonholing but might be described as a rootsy amalgam of folk, country, bluegrass, rock and pop – even a jab of punk-style dynamics here and there. Drawn by the naked honesty of their songs and the rousing intensity of their live shows, legendary producer and talent scout Rick Rubin signed The Avett Brothers – consisting of siblings Scott and Seth, plus bassist Bob Crawford – and produced the album for his American Recordings label.

Port O'Brien - Threadbare (10/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/274287460/POBTh_Vic.zip

As 2009 began, Port O'Brien started to prepare songs for what was to become Threadbare. What started as a light-hearted and loose effort quickly turned into a dense, introspective work following the tragic loss of Cambria's younger brother. They started recording at their friend Jason Quever of Papercuts' living room studio in San Francisco. The songs were given a certain warmth and intimacy that couldn't be achieved in a larger space. The sense of comfort they found gave them the ability to fully realize the weight of the songs. "In the Meantime" explores the desire for contentment in tumultuous times. "High Without the Hope" bookends the album, illuminating the emotion and sense of loss that was felt throughout the recording process.

After spending weeks recording with Jason, the band felt they could work in a more open space. They worked on the more celebratory and rhythmic songs in Los Angeles with Aaron Espinoza of Earlimart at the Ship recording studio. "My Will is Good" and "Oslo Campfire" describe the liberation that follows in the wake of making active changes in one's life following tragedy.

These sessions create Threadbare. Its become somewhat of a two sided record with dark, haunting, and at times meditative songs paired up with the untiring, somewhat aggressive and punchy anthems that Port O'Brien is becoming known for. The last few years have seen many adventures for the band. The creation of this record came with continuing changes both within the band personally, and sonically. Port O'Brien will continue to evolve. In the meantime, Threadbare stands as another mark this young band is leaving.

Secret Message Machine's latest collection of songs were recorded around the sessions for Giants Madmen and Ghost. What is striking about this release is the variety, both in recording and emotional quality, from the churning pop of "No Heaven", to the to the starkness of "Birds of Prey", to the experimental ADD of "Riding Pocket Valley." One thing remains constant, that is Barrett's strong voice.

Barrett’s songs contain the best elements of singer/songwriter indie rock, with no cliches or tired sounds. Each track, although fronted by seemingly forlorn vocals, springs to life with intricately placed layers of bass, acoustic strumming, magical effects and rock guitar coming and going at just the right moments. The songwriting comes off in an extremely natural way, making the transistions from one song to the next easy, smooth, even ghostly—like, hey is this a different song, or a different part of the one before it? This album definitely has flow. Actually it flows so well, I’m always surprised when it’s over. With 11 songs, it clocks in just over 30 mins, proving that there’s never anything wrong with leaving the listener wanting more.

Fool’s Gold-Fool’s Gold 2009

slika

Fool’s Gold is a Los Angeles collective that weaves together western pop aesthetics with African rhythms and melodies. The group started as a side project of two young LA musicians, vocalist/bassist Luke Top and lead guitarist Lewis Pesacov, who set out to explore their shared love of various forms of African music (specifically Congolese, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Malian), Krautrock, and 80s dance influenced pop music.

Theo Angell - Tenebrae (2009)

slika

Theo Angell is apparently a Jackie O’Motherf*cker collaborator, which might explain his haphazard view on folk music, blending influence from ole-time blues, American primitive folk and the modern alt-folk stylings of Michael Gira and friends.
Amish is pleased to announce the release of Theo Angell's Tenebrae (AMI-030). Tenebrae is Theo's fourth long-player and second with Amish (also see Dearly Beloved, [AMI-025]). Theo grew up in rural Oregon, was home-schooled along with his siblings by his minister father, which provided him little exposure to mainstream pop culture; the tunes on Tenebrae reflect these conditions, documenting both a reverence for and rebellion against isolation and spiritual absolutes. To that end, the title song, which is the Latin word for shadows, references a religious ceremony that involves the extinguishing of candles and a slamming of the book in advance of holy week. The album’s song-cycle reworks various primitive musical forms (tent revival, folk, psych, fill-in-the-blank with wildly counter-cultural outsider artist) to new and celebratory ends, twisting these styles into a unique brand of folk-psychedelia. For this outing, the Tabernacle Hillside Singers include, among others, Matt Valentine, P.G. Six, Tom Greenwood, Samara Lubelski and Tara Jane O'Neil. Tenebrae highlights again Theo’s unique poly-vocal pyrotechnics and will no doubt prove to be one of the most beautiful records of the year.

Mason Jennings - Blood of Man (09/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/275073105/MJBoM_Vic.zip

It all kinda started at Christmas when my sons and I were hanging ornaments on the tree. We have an ornament that is a little electric guitar and my six-year-old son was looking at it and asked, "What's this Dad?" I said, "What??? It's an electric guitar." To which he replied, "What's that?" Well, I was kinda horrified so I ran downstairs and pulled out an old hollowbody electric (that is my wife's), an amp and I came upstairs, plugged it in and ripped into "My Generation" by The Who. Well, my one son actually climbed me in point 2 seconds and leaped off my shoulders while the other one looked like I had plugged the lights on the tree into him. They flew around the room dancing for two straight wonderful hours. I got the point. I grew up playing only electric and it was like remembering how to be free. For many reasons, it was so needed. So I got free. The next week I headed into my studio and recorded "City Of Ghosts" and away I went. I wrote about the war and being a parent in "The Field", two topics close to my heart. I wrote about being a teenager and how heavy that time can feel and how it can shape the path you take. So, gratitude is in there somewhere. I wrote about doubts and fear, about God and Spirit, and about hope and possibility and things that are elusive and hard to name. I wrote mostly about them, and they came into the room like angels and beasts. This whole time I knew the record would be called Blood Of Man. I also kept hearing two phrases in my head during recording. Maybe you can decipher them, for I know not where they come from or what they mean exactly: "Do you remember when the world was young?" and "In the beginning there was blood on the lamb." Whew. I wrote about how hard it is to be 34 and be a parent and sane and married and true and positive and yourself and a man and funny and a decent person and a not decent person and human and in love. I turned the music up so loud so often that my ears rang every night. I wrote about death, of course. I wrote about life. I wrote about pain and addiction. And I let it flow and left it raw. I worked fast and I let my heart lead. I guess I have come to the point in my life and my art where I just want to make music that I love and not mess with it. If people dig it: cool. If not: cool. I will be making it anyway. I have to. I realized that too. By the grace of god: I have to make music. More importantly: I get to. Also, before anything, I am a music listener. So, this record has not been messed with in any way. What you have is exactly the music I listen to in my van and the way I have given it to my friends on CD-Rs. My hope is that it can help where help is needed. Music saved my life and I am so grateful for it.

Kesang Marstrand - Bodega Rose (2008)

Kod: Označi sve

"Kesang is an exceptional songwriter. She has a voice that is nothing less than heart-stopping with its clear beauty."
- Michael Erlewine, All-Music Guide Founder
--------------
After discovering her passion for music via a piano in the common room of a schoolhouse in Colorado, Kesang Marstrand knew that it would be an inseparable part her life. As a teen, she entertained the hope of one day becoming a classical pianist and composer, but her family's move to New York City while she was in high school prompted her to exchange the piano for the ever-more-mobile acoustic guitar. Born in Woodstock, New York, to a Danish mother and Tibetan father, the young musician sought out inspiration that was as varied as her cultural background. With artists like David Bowie, Patsy Cline, Ani DiFranco, and classical artists, both Eastern and Western, to guide her, she began to write her own songs and to explore the possibilities her guitar and voice offered her. Now 27, Marstrand has been writing and performing for the past decade. In November of last year, she released her debut album, "Bodega Rose," a contemplative, acoustic work that includes accompaniment by renowned musician and composer, Karl Berger. The album, in addition to eleven original tracks, also includes a cover song, a sparse, down-tempo version of Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson's collaboration, "Say Say Say." Marstrand now divides her time between New York City and Seattle, where she continues to create new material… Her next project will be an album of original lullabies entitled, "Hello Night."

Reckless Kelly - Wicked Twisted Road (2005)

mp3 VBR~224kpbs | 79MB | 47:53 min.
One might argue that Reckless Kelly is good at a lot of the same things other alternative country bands excel in. They've got the same nice rootsy mix of acoustic-electric instruments, and a scruffy sounding singer to deliver world-weary lyrics. But there's a difference on Wicked Twisted Road, and that's in how the band -- guitarist David Abeyta, fiddler Cody Braun, singer Willy Braun, bassist Jimmy McFeeley, and percussionist Jay Nazz -- puts it all together. From the get-go, the band shows its ability to deliver songs like the title track and "Dogtown" in the most natural, unaffected manner. The latter unwinds at a nice, lazy pace perfectly suited for Willy's vocal and harmonica solo. In other words, Reckless Kelly never gives one the impression that it's striking an alternative country pose consisting of one part talent and two parts attitude. The band also knows how to stretch itself stylistically. "Seven Nights in Eire" offers a surprising mix of Celtic and country and blending fiddles and steel guitar, while "Sixgun" offers brash, country-rock. If Wicked Twisted Road is a tale of life and love on the road, then Reckless Kelly has told it well. Fans will appreciate the solid effort, while everyone else -- who's never quite gotten around to checking out the band -- will find it a nice introduction. -- AMG

Vic Chesnutt - At The Cut (09/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/275373241/VCATC_Vic.zip

New album from Georgia singer-songwriter. Recorded in Montreal with Fugazi's Guy Picciotto and members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mt. Zion.
-------
Vic Chesnutt is the real deal, a man who lives for music and who has tirelessly deployed his impish, surly, witty, unflinching perspective in hundreds of songs featuring brilliantly unique wordsmithery and a profound playfulness that thumbs its nose at a life of seriously hard knocks. Vic’s prolific writing – chock of full of real irony, wonderful turns of phrase, humour, rage and tenderness, brutal literalism and ornate observation – constitutes a truly original voice and reflects a truly indomitable spirit....

....For an album so overtly shaped by ruminations on mortality, by a man from Athens, GA who certainly knows of what he sings (having survived a car accident at age 18 that confined him to a wheelchair and has subjected him to an endless cavalcade of complications, procedures, emergencies and towering medical bills ever since), it is both refreshing and unbelievably heartwarming to hear how Vic Chesnutt sidesteps any of the obvious Southern Gothic tropes, lyrically and musically. No vaulted arches, gaping abysses or burning fields here – no ‘voicing’ of the preacher or the devil, no putting on airs. Vic manages to sing so authentically and wholeheartedly from and about his sense of place (the South, the wheelchair, 21st century America) because he refuses to sentimentalise any of it and rails against his personal fate without bitterness, without apology, with a sardonic and sometimes angry poetics of the passionately humanist and secular variety: wholly framed by the back porch, championing a humble wisdom, a sincere ethics (without moralising) and a natural literateness, certainly permitting a wisecrack or three, but never allowing for anything hackneyed or cornball or fake. We think At The Cut is a bona fide classic by a man better positioned than most to sing it strong and true.

Evangelista - Prince Of Truth (10/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/275388597/EvaPoT_Vic.zip

The new Evangelista album Prince Of Truth stays true to the band’s uncompromising and compelling combination of delicate coaxing love and wicked cathartic awakening sonic voyage. Not so much confessional as ritual/processional and invitational says Bozulich: “inviting the listener to come clean, to defy or just be near people you believe in, to sit down, all of us together and make sense of the fact that there is no logic and perhaps no Truth at the base of anything, that we must open up and up and up because if we do not we are just fish gone belly-up in the stream – there is a Prince inside us that will grow into nothing more or less than an everyday person moving free, armed with the salvation of sound and love.”

Having toured extensively throughout North America and Europe during the year-and-a-half following the release of Hello Voyager, Evangelista has coalesced around a core trio, with Bozulich and bassist Tara Barnes now joined by keyboardist/sound artist Dominic Cramp. Returning to Montreal and the Hotel2Tango studio where the previous two Evangelista records were made, the new album was co-written by the above trio along with several members of their extended Montreal family, most notably Lisa Gamble (who played everything from musical saw to bike wheel). Gamble also occasionally joins the band on tour (as do a wide cast of misfits from around the globe).

With Prince Of Truth, Bozulich has shaped her Evangelista group into something more intense, more committed, more complex and more sonically and compositionally obsessive than ever. Conventional song structure is mostly absent – the pieces are built from an extremely diverse set of sound sources, taking shape through layers of accumulation and juxtaposition, foreground and background, sudden shifts, suspensions and dissolutions – and Carla’s commanding voice and brilliant lyrics.
