Heavy Trash - Midnight Soul Serenade (2009)

m4a 256kpbs | 72MB | 36:37 min.
The point at which Jon Spencer truly crafted his own identity was with his Blues Explosion band. As the name suggests, their music was frequently loud, bombastic and loose limbed, as well as having the sense of adventure to strip to the bone and put themselves back together again, most notably with their Acme Plus remix album.

With Heavy Trash now on their third album, it can no longer be considered a side project. Spencer’s collaboration with New York alt-rock veteran Matt Verta-Ray was always destined to be a slightly different beast, but still one that retains enough of his hangdog charm and swagger to delight critics and his pre-existing fanbase. Midnight Soul Serenade continues Spencer’s ever-present trend of storytelling and effortlessly switching from upbeat moments that propel themselves with their own momentum to quieter, more introspective numbers where the vocals almost become a voiceover. The Pill barely registers a pulse, but carries enough ominous atmospherics under a squealing guitar line to sound like the opening number of a well-thumbed pulp fiction pot boiler turned into a musical. That’s not to say that Midnight Soul Serenade sounds phoned in, though. Instead, each number is breezed through with laconic charm; they’re still, in essence, singing the blues, but wear its tell-tale signs like a well-fitting curse.

What they do lack is the low-end rumble and foul-mouthed charm that Spencer is capable of howling out when the mood takes him. The return of John ‘Speedo’ Reis with The Night Marchers last year shared that common trait, so perhaps this is just what happens when bluesmen who understand punk rock grow older and wiser. Isolation isn’t a Joy Division cover, preferring instead to be a strange mix of rousing and disorientating instead. It’s no longer necessary to strap yourself in to keep pace with them, but there’s enough strum und drang peeking around the edges for those who want to hark back in time for that kind of freewheeling hybrid guitar music. They’re nothing if not true to themselves; the rest just seems to follow. -- http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/66xm

Brownswood Bubblers Four Compiled By Gilles Peterson (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/293681204/BBFGP_Vic.zip

The man responsible for more compilations than you can shake a sticky slipmat at returns, with the fourth collection of bubbling-under acts for his Brownswood label – named after the North London road he used to live in. This instalment kicks off on a brassy, soulful, retro tip, proceeds through leftfield hip hop and funk-fuelled beats, and dallies in Mali and Brazil and before veering off into various electro-flavoured hybrids.

Maybe So, Maybe No is a meticulously smooth emulation of 70s soul by geeky white Detroit area multi-instrumentalist and singer Mayer Hawthorne. It just makes you wonder how he performs this stuff live. Souleance’s Mañana mutates from hip hop cut-ups into a Brazilian berimbau and cuica percussion workout, and the down-to-Rio vibe is picked up again later on with a deliciously dreamy, floating cut by Jam Da Silva: Dia Santo sounds like Tribalistas on a particularly blissful and effective holiday.

Another highlight is the fabulously named Misled Children & Odean Pope, whose Dadadun is a lovely, dawdling jazz/funk instrumental sprinkled with inspired percussive effects.

The predominance of bright digital sounds and low garage and electro beats that go all the way from Keaver & Brause’s Awake through to Lone’s Sea Spray (both on the cutting edge Dealmaker label) is thankfully tempered by their sparseness and sense of invention.

Oumou Sangaré’s Iyo Djeli is the only thing here that’s neither obscure nor ‘bubbling under’, since Mali’s leading ‘songbird’ made her breakthrough back in the early 90s. It sticks out not just because of that but also for its ruminating balafon (wooden xylophone) and Sangaré’s titanic vocal, which puts most of the other singers to shame and effectively divides the album in two.

With all of this stuff out there on the net, the whole idea of DJs as purveyors of ‘rare’ cuts is arguably becoming redundant these days. Even so, there’s still no substitute for a good pair of ears and an engaging sequence. Some sleeve notes wouldn’t have gone amiss, though, as even a trawl of the net won’t produce much information about several of these acts beyond a minimalist MySpace page.

Cate Le Bon - Me Oh My (10/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/293664775/CLBMOM_Vic.zip

A new force in song-craft, Le Bon first gained public attention when she supported Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals on his 2007 solo tour. She also appeared as a guest vocalist on Neon Neon's 2008 single, 'I Lust U'.

As befits a songwriter who only writes in the dark, the album is a heady and highly personal Gallic stew of equal parts Nico, Bobbie Gentry, Stephen Malkmus, and the chronicler's own emotional observations on the impossibility of existence.

'Me Oh My' is complimented with artwork by existential DJ Huw Evans and accompanied by a Thriller-style short film by the visionary artist Casey Raymond, created for the song 'Hollow Trees House Hounds'.
---
"Cate Le Bon is one strange creature. Her odd, beautiful songs burrow like furtive woodland creatures to a safe nest lodged firmly between tradition and individual talent. She might stand clearly in a lineage of Welsh psych-folk from 70s acts such as Meic Stevens, Heather Jones and Bran (who she's covered live) through to luminaries and sometime collaborators Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Gruff Rhys whose new label she makes her debut on. But if the influence of Rhys' quirky psychedelia is here, there's also rough guitars, spectral shanties and, drawing it all together, Le Bon's cool, Welsh Nico vocal." - NME 8/10

Since moving to the UK from his native America and finding himself living in an East End squat with Neneh Cherry, Adrian Sherwood and Ari Up from the Slits, Jeb Loy Nichols has variously been art director for Pressure Sound records, performed guest vocals for Groove Armada, designed prints and fabric for Paul Smith and compiled the celebrated review of blue eyed southern soul, Country Got Soul. Throughout this time he has also had a successful career as a musician, both with his band The Fellow Travellers and as a solo artist; his previous albums have received glowing reviews in publications from the Independent to Mojo. The accompaniment on Strange Faith And Practice is provided by a group of revered musicians hailing from London's vibrant jazz scene, including Tim Giles and Mark Hanslip; the rich bass comes care of Riaan Vosloo, who also arranged these songs, and who co-founded the Impossible Ark label with close contemporary Benedic Lamdin (better known as the rising jazz producer/musician Nostalgia 77).

Me'Shell Ndegéocello - Devil's Halo (10/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/293321569/M_SNDH_Vic.zip

Romance stalks Meshell Ndegeocello like a killer on "Devil's Halo," which features such murderous tunes as "Slaughter" and "Die Young." Yet Ndegeocello has rarely sounded stronger, and the disc's stripped-down approach accentuates her musical brawn.

An alumna of both Howard University and the District's go-go scene, Ndegeocello has explored pop, jazz, hip-hop and other forms. Where 2007's "The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams" was eclectic and expansive, "Devil's Halo" keeps things simple. With just a three-piece band behind her, Ndegeocello alternates between starkly catchy pop-funk numbers and torch songs that sometimes burst into flames. The opening "Slaughter" sets the tone: "Don't say you love me/I'll run away," croons Ndegeocello, playing the lounge singer on the verses but boosting her voice to match co-producer Chris Bruce's guitar during the hard-rock refrains.

Sonically, the busiest track is the up-tempo yet dejected "Lola," whose heroine turns to drink after "the boy she loved/Left her for another girl/The girl she loved/Left her for another boy." The song has a playful energy that belies its subject. The album can also be potent at lower speeds, as "Love You Down" demonstrates. This come-on is slow and sultry, but its bristling guitar coda proclaims that Ndegeocello can never be mellow.

Joss Stone - Colour Me Free (11/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/295964495/JSCMF_Vic.zip

After several delays, Joss Stone is back with her fourth album 'Colour Me Free' next month, as released on Monday 2nd November.

Joss wrote and recorded the follow-up to 2007's 'Introducing Joss Stone' at Mama Stones (a live music venue owned by her mum), and worked with producers Jonathan Shorten and Conor Reeves.

The singer also worked with a number of guest collaborators on the 12 songs, including US rapper Nas, Jeff Beck and Raphael Saadiq (scroll down for the tracklisting).

According to Stone, 'Colour Me Free' is a very raw sounding record, as she explains: "I kind of woke up one morning and wanted to make an album."

"It's very, very raw. It's a bunch of musicians, writers and myself, and we're just jamming, basically." Joss added.

"This time, the album was not dictated or forced, it was an organic process where each musician was given the freedom to create their sound."

"I co-produced this record; it's an honest and accurate representation of where I am as an artist and person right now. I am really proud of the music and excited to have people finally hear the songs."

The lead single from 'Colour Me Free' is 'Free Me', as released on 8th November.

BEAK>BEAK> 2009.

slika

BEAK> were formed in January 2009 by three Bristol musicians, Billy Fuller, Matt Williams and Geoff Barrow.

The band have very strict guidelines governing the recording and writing process of their work. The music was recorded live in one room with no overdubs or repair, only using edits to create arrangements. All tracks were written over a twelve-day session in SOA Studio’s, Bristol. The album is to be released on Invada records UK and Europe.

Sometimes a band can be no more than the sum of it’s parts, but BEAK> are an equation in which it’s impossible to define equivalents or totals. Instead the meeting of three talent’s form a foundation from which idea’s assimilate and propagate. Those talents are:

Billy Fuller. Reared in Bristol, on an aural diet of anything and everything, facilitated later by his time working in the cities top independent record shop Replay Records, and also playing with handfuls of bands – including Invada’s first signing: Fuzz Against Junk, as well as Massive Attack, Robert Plant, and Malakai. Billy is BEAK>’S thoughtful pulse; his bass a forceful origin for their superlative narrative arcs.

Matt Williams. Picked up a Yamaha keyboard aged three and never looked back, as Team Brick creates dissonance that immediately elucidates free forming thought, and impacts heavily on BEAK>’S rolling landscape. He enjoys playing air drums whilst cycling, singing lines from a favourite Latin prayer and doesn’t understand the music he makes himself.

Geoff Barrow. Musician and producer born near Bristol. Best known for forming and producing popular music group Portishead and part owner of the independent record label Invada Records . Commenting on working in BEAK> "its really good to create music under different conditions than your used too.”"

The name of Banhart's sixth full-length album is What Will We Be, and it will be released on Warner/Reprise Records. The album was co-produced by Devendra and Band of Bees' Paul Butler, and features Noah Georgeson, drummer Greg Rogove, bassist Luckey Remington and guitarist Rodrigo Amarante.
----
What Will We Be has a sunny, breezy feel with performances that evoke warm, lazy afternoons spent with good friends. The album is dominated by powerfully melodic, mid-tempo numbers played with relaxed expertise. But there's also ambitious stylistic range displayed with the inclusion of evanescent ballads like 'Meet Me At the Lookout Point,' the epic riff-rocker 'Rats' sprightly R&B flavored groovers on 'Baby,' and the sultry Latin-flavored stunner 'Brindo,' the Roxy-inspired '16th & Valencia Roxy Music' among other pleasant surprises

Lyle Lovett - Natural Forces (10/2009)

Lyle Lovett is the ultimate AAA artist in a ten-gallon hat: Not quite country, not exactly blues, and definitely not jazz (though he’s sympathetic to the tradition), Lovett has coupled his witty wordplay with an eclectic grab bag of musical adornment throughout his nearly quarter-century career. But it hasn’t often been as compelling as on his 11th long player, Natural Forces (which, on the title track, rhymes with “home is where my horse is”). Essentially the third chapter of the country-centric trilogy he’s been unspooling since 1996’s The Road to Ensenada and 2003’s My Baby Don’t Tolerate, Lovett’s latest is an epic in the wide-open Texas tradition, featuring four original songs (“Natural Forces” and “Empty Blue Shoes” ranking among the finest he’s written) and another seven from various Texas songwriters, including Lovett’s heroes Townes Van Zandt and Robert Earl Keen (who co-wrote “It’s Rock and Roll,” the gritty, uptempo, album closer). Far more than just a curator and tasteful interpreter of others’ material, Lovett once again proves he can stand alongside the finest storytellers.

Release Notes:

Editors have experienced success in terms of sales and audience
numbers, but their gloom-laced indie-rock has often been heard as a
retread of what’s come before – a watered-down Joy Division for the
masses, despite it packing a greater melodic punch than their
melancholic forebears. For their third album, the Birmingham four-piece
have addressed this criticism head on, unashamedly crafting their ‘most
Joy Division’ record yet.

And that’s no bad thing: by embracing what they’re evidently good at –
subtly reworking records from personal collections – Editors have
struck gold on In This Light…, albeit between mining little of note on
a couple of lacklustre tracks. Said skippable selections aside – the
alarmingly over-dramatic single Papillon, the shonky lyricism of Like
Treasure – this nine-track affair finds its makers exhibiting a
self-confidence previously masked by tried-and-tested pop hooks. Their
risks here, however slight, do pay dividends.

The opening title track is a phenomenal way to begin proceedings. An
electronic pulse – think the start of Franz Ferdinand’s Take Me Out
given a Kraftwerk once-over – parts to allow frontman Tom Smith to
state, plaintively: “In this light, and on this evening / London’s
become the most beautiful thing I’ve seen”. It’s a track to oppose A
Weekend in the City, Bloc Party’s 2007 album of capital city tension
and paranoia, and a stirring, teasing number that layers noise upon
noise until its climax, a reprise of that pulse, sounds remarkable for
its delicateness.

Bricks and Mortar is poor lyrically – alas it’s an area Editors haven’t
improved in – but its Depeche Mode-does-The Terminator synths and
bassline mirroring of The Horrors’ sublime Sea Within a Sea combine
neatly to create a euphoric whole sure to light up future live shows.
The confrontational tone of Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool just about makes
up for its awful title (only Six By Seven could ever pull off the ‘east
something equals something’ equation), and closer Walk the Fleet Road
is a down-tempo arrangement that could, in years to come, be celebrated
as Editors’ own Atmosphere. It’s an elegantly solemn ending to an album
that wears its influences broadly, but never abuses them.

And, as such, it might be the best album Editors have yet produced,
even if obvious singles are conspicuous by their absence.

Fever Ray - Live in Luleå 2009.

slika

After an astonishing series of US live dates, Fever Ray (a.k.a. Karin Dreijer-Andersson) announces a deluxe edition of her critically acclaimed debut album (out November 24th, 2009).

"Fever Ray Deluxe" contains the CD album plus two new studio recordings, cover versions of Vashti Bunyan's "Here Before" and Nick Cave and Anita Lane's "Stranger Than Kindness," which Fever Ray also performs during the live set. The second disc "Live in Luela" captures the full Fever Ray live show on CD. The third disc is a DVD featuring all previously released Fever Ray videos and an exclusive video for "Stranger Than Kindness," directed by acclaimed multimedia artist Andreas Nilsson (who also designed Fever Ray and The Knife's live shows)

"Fever Ray is uncut darkness, a combination of silty bass and high, brambly sounds. Andersson sings in an unfiltered voice that favors an avian, hard sound. She also digitally alters the pitch of her voice, making it sound like the voice of male mummy, perhaps singing to himself as he looks through an album of water-damaged photographs," Sasha Frere-Jones, The New Yorker. August Brown of The Los Angeles Times writes of Fever Ray's live show, "[Fever Ray works] at the absolute forefront of sound, stage and the ways the two inform each other...Fever Ray never shies from its more theatrical and modern impulses, the real emotions Andersson's music brings out -- enticement, disquiet and unknowable mystery -- are much older than the stage. "

This "unknowable mystery" is the very essence of Fever Ray. Fever Ray is the title of both the project and album. It is an evocation of the music's sound, intense and anxious, yet luminous. It's the culmination of work that began in 2007 when Karin and Olof, the brother-sister duo who are The Knife, decided to take time out following a handful of incredible live shows. Their first two albums did well in their Swedish homeland; their third, "Silent Shout," went to Number One, won six Swedish Grammys, underlined their reputation as an act capable of the truly extraordinary and was pronounced the Best Record Of 2006 by Pitchfork.

Released in 2009 Fever Ray's self-titled debut has already collected extraordinary praise, with an 8.1 review ranking and best new music distinction from Pitchfork. Nylon calls the album "dark, surreal and majestic" and Filter calls it "sublime and magically creepy" with an 87% review ranking. In addition to Andersson's Fever Ray project, she continues to collaborate with brother Olof as The Knife. Their most recent work, an opera based on the life of Charles Darwin called "Tomorrow In A Year" premiered in Copenhagen September 2009 (additional info here: http://www.hotelproforma.dk). The studio album "Tomorrow, In A Year" by The Knife in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock is set for release in 2010.

Of Doveman's new record, Hansard says, "The Conformist is just fucking beautiful. Thomas brings so much light to other people's music, it's great to see him stop long enough to apply that light to his profound sense of song. He's not afraid to go in, in where the good stuff is, in where you might get lost without a compass, in and deeper in."

Indeed Bartlett is a keyboardist who spends much of his time touring and recording with marquee acts like Antony and the Johnsons, The National, Bebel Gilberto, the Swell Season and Martha Wainwright, but The Conformist marks his third proper album as Doveman, following 2007's With My Left Hand I Raise the Dead and 2005's The Acrobat. There's also 2008's Footloose, a song-by-song cover of the film soundtrack which became an internet sensation featured in Entertainment Weekly, Stereogum, Gawker, New York Magazine and across the blogosphere - pointing to Doveman's breakout potential.

A progression from previous efforts, The Conformist retains the melancholy, whisper quiet, night time music feel of his previous records, while adding more upbeat undercurrents like sing along choruses (i.e. "Breathing Out"), drum machines and synths ("Memorize," "Hurricane"), and the arranging and playing prowess of close friends Nico Muhly ("Tigers") and The National ("The Best Thing," "The Cat Awoke").

Alasdair Roberts - The Wyrd Meme (2009) EP

slika

Following hard on the heels of Spoils comes the second offering this year from Alasdair Roberts, an EP of four long tracks that brilliantly bears out the conjunction of ancient and modern, mythical and analytical, in the title The Wyrd Meme.

Set to guitar and mooning harmonium, and sung in Roberts' distinctive reedy brogue, "Coral And Tar" has the tainted fragility of a double-edged love song by Will Oldham, while "The Yarn Unraveller", with its imagery of "the ship unlaunchable, yet forever doomed to sailing", recalls The Incredible String Band's more elliptical myth songs – though they never paused a song midway for a passage of feedback whines. Mythic beasts appear in suitably serpentine rhymes in the apocalyptic account of "The Royal Road At The World's End", before being summarily dismissed

"Vuk is a Finnish-American artist whose unique music carries sonic strains that weave themselves into a rich, colorful tapestry of experimental rock, Balkan vocal music, meticulously layered organ harmonies, exuberantly inventive instrumentation and polyrhythmic walls of Vodou percussion. Her songs explore inner, fictional landscapes sculpted by dreams, sex, trauma, death and spiritual ecstasy. Live, Vuk expands into a percussion-and-organ-driven trio, and the sound of the pump organ takes center stage next to Vuk's startling voice." PRESS RELEASE

Various Artists "Hard-Headed Woman: A Celebration of Wanda Jackson"

slika

Wanda Jackson is an artist that, sadly, you’ve probably never heard. She was a pioneer in the impressionable Rock & Roll scene of the mid-1950s, where she became quite well known for her gritty, hard Rockabilly style, (she would tour with a young Elvis Presley, who she’d label one of her inspirations) and she scored a major hit in 1960 with the raucous “Let’s Have A Party.” As the 1960s wore on, she toned down her music, opting for a more traditional Country style—and not surprisingly, she had a string of hit records, but this style would once again change in the 1970s, when she turned her stylistic focus to Gospel.

It’s no surprise, then, that Bloodshot, a label that’s considered the standard-bearer of “insurgent country,” would pay tribute to this somewhat (unfairly) obscure musical figure. After all, the correlation between Jackson and label acts such as Neko Case and Kelly Hogan (both featured here) is quite obvious. Thus, Hard Headed Woman is obviously a labor of love for Bloodshot, as they bring out many of the best artists of today—many of which are definitely indebted to Jackson, even if they might not know it.

Hard Headed Woman also serves as a highlight of a tribute record done right. First, the song selection covers the gamut, from Wanda’s own songs to songs she performed. Every era is covered, from her early Rockabilly days to her turn towards Country, all are given fair representation here—heck, even her Gospel era is touched upon. Secondly, the artists are appropriate for the material. It really wouldn’t be too strange to hear Carolyn Mark performing “Hot Dog, That Made Him Mad” in her own set list, Robbie Fulks’ “Tears At The Grand Ol’ Opry” could have easily found a place on his cover album, 13 Hillbilly Greats, and Wayne Hancock’s version of “Let’s Have a Party” reminds that Jackson was not only a contemporary of Elvis Presley, she could have easily (and probably should have been) considered his female equivalent. It’s also a testament to Jackson’s ability, then, that there are a few male takes on her material—which, in a roundabout way, shows that Jackson could hold her own in the then men’s only club of Rock & Roll. (The only complaint to be had, though, is that there’s not a cover of “Hard-Headed Woman”!)

Hard Headed Woman: A Celebration of Wanda Jackson is a well-presented labor of love for an artist who most assuredly deserves more than her obscurity. Though this record might not change such things, it’s certainly evidence that Jackson was—and still is—a talent to reckon with. Well done

The Hellbusters-Guilty 2007

slika

Hot damn, it’s the Hellbusters, from Reno, Nevada, USA… we play pure, natural, lean, hard, raw blues at high volume and rocket speed.
The Hellbusters are Todd Mauldin on guitar and vocals, and Jack D. Doyle III Esq. Jr. on harp and stomp box. We play our own brand of Mississippi-inspired blues.Powerful, raw, energetic, Delta-inspired outlaw blues: "George Thorogood meets R.L. Burnside in a dark alley, just as Henry Rollins walks up with Kim Wilson, and somebody starts counting off."
In our no frontier. 21st century American society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. There tread the Hellbusters..one of John Lee Hooker's own prototypes. Two men never even considered for mass production. Too weird to grow old in an corner office, too damned cool for school, just a couple of kick ass, foot stompin, corona swillin guys teaching the rest of us how to kick loose and step out beyond the edge.

Caroline Herring - Golden Apples of the Sun (10/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/298529341/CHGAotS_Vic.zip

Set for release on October 27, 2009 through Signature Sounds, Caroline Herring's fourth album Golden Apples of the Sun is her most intimate and mature to date. Combining haunting originals with some surprising new takes on old standards, Herring has created an album that at once recalls the folk heyday of the 1960s and 70s while also sounding entirely fresh and new.

Herring has built a name for herself by crafting in-depth story songs, with critics continually describing her work as "timeless," "pure," "graceful" and "powerful." Her last release, Lantana, was named by National Public Radio as one of the "Top Ten Best Folk Albums for 2008." While critics and fans have long praised the purity and complexity of her voice, drawing comparisons to Joan Baez and Kate Wolf, the vocal performances on Golden Apples of the Sun are as comfortable and intimate as any Herring has produced. It is the most true to stage release of her career, and Herring gives credit to producer David "Goody" Goodrich, who crafted the stripped-down sound in the Signature Sounds studio in Connecticut. Armed primarily with just her guitar and live vocals, the finished product has all the marks of a fully developed artist and performer.

Emboldened by the critical acclaim of her recent work, Herring continues to create what Vintage Guitar has called "musical tapestries full of dark landscapes, bittersweet images, and otherworldly moments." As usual, Herring draws inspiration from a wide range of sources. The album's lead song "Tales of the Islander" is vintage Herring, an inspired and inspirational paean to the Gulf Coast folk artist Walter Anderson, and the closing track, "The Great Unknown," takes off from a passage from Dante's Inferno. Yet Herring also includes beautifully crafted, intimate songs such as "The Dozens" and "Abuelita" drawn from her personal experience.

Perhaps the most unexpected aspect of the new album, however, is the tribute Herring pays to the iconic female songwriters and singers who influenced her. Herring's work has always been identified with the traditions of her native South, yet on Golden Apples of the Sun Herring filters the sounds and inspiration of Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins through her own distinctive musical sensibilities.

Long-time Herring fans are sure to appreciate her evocative interpretations of Mitchell's "Cactus Tree" as well as the traditional bluegrass tune "Long Black Veil" and the blues classic "See See Rider." Herring also tackles "True Colors," a song made famous by Cyndi Lauper, giving a newfound strength and directness to the pop song. These choices may seem like strange bedfellows on paper, but filtered through Herring's sensibility - stark, elegant, and bittersweet - they settle in exquisitely alongside her original compositions. Sonically unguarded and daringly intimate, Golden Apples of the Sun continues a creative evolution that has solidified Herring as a musician of consistent depth and resonance.

Surfer Blood - Astro Coast ( 2010. )

slika

If you haven't been following the meteoric rise of West Palm Beach's Surfer Blood, it's definitely not too late to start. The band, who will be all over CMJ in New York this week, including the Brooklyn Vegan's showcase on October 22, make great indie-pop music, it's as simple as that.

Well, its been brought to our attention that Surfer Blood will be releasing its debut Astro Coast January 19 of next year via Kanine Records. The album was recorded during the band's freshman year at University of Florida and will consist of 10 tracks including the power-pop anthem "Swim," the retro-sounding "Twin Peaks," the subdued "Harmonix."

Buika - El Ultimo Trago (2009)

slika

Is there a more potent voice in the whole of popular music? The Spanish singer is an uncategorizable talent whose repertoire embraces everything from pop to jazz and flamenco to blues and soul. Pedro Almodovar, one of her admirers, provides the liner notes for this haunting tribute to Chavela Vargas, the grand old lady of Latin American song. It’s a marvelously nuanced piece of work, with the pianist Chucho Valdes, guiding light of that peerless Afro-Cuban band Irakere, leading the unobtrusive accompaniment. Luz de Luna receives a sleek, jazz-inflected makeover and Las Simples Cosas is quietly authoritative. A slow burner, perhaps, but beautiful nevertheless.

Daniel Johnston - Is and Always Was (2009)

mp3 320kpbs | 87MB | 39:44 min.

Daniel Johnston first made his reputation in the 1980s with ultra low-budget homemade recordings that sounded as rickety as his notoriously fragile psyche. As Johnston's cult following has grown with the years, those early efforts have continued to define his approach in the studio for good or ill, as attempts to craft more professional albums have found him collaborating with sympathetic musicians attempting to make sense of his idiosyncrasies (most notably Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse on 2003's Fear Yourself), or working with producers trying to create a hi-fi replication of Johnston's early cassettes (something Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers did with surprising success on 1994's Fun). But with Is and Always Was, producer Jason Falkner has embraced a new approach; seemingly ignoring the artist's past work, Falkner has given Johnston's melodies a polished pop sound that reveals just how good the tunes can sound when given the right treatment. Falkner not only produced Is and Always Was, he handled most of the instruments himself (Joey Waronker play drums on six tracks) and in his hands, there's nothing halting or tentative about the songs -- these melodies are smart, energetic, and engaging, and with this treatment, Johnston's music sounds like potential hit single material for a change, especially on "Without You," "High Horse," and the title track. However, all that changes when Johnston starts to sing -- earlier attempts by producers to reach some middle ground with his music have given his quavering and uncertain vocals a reasonably fitting context, but the sheen and snap of Falkner's backing tracks make for an uneasy balance with his voice, which has developed a slight lisp while also showing the wear brought on by smoking along with its usual uncertainties. "Queenie the Doggie," a tribute to a departed pet, sounds as if its naiveté is more than a bit forced, and "Fake Records of Rock & Roll" suggests Daniel's familiarity with boogie rock is pretty sketchy, but otherwise this is a fine collection of new songs from Johnston, deeply personal but fascinating in their stark emotional honesty and surprisingly witty. But until Johnston's craft as a vocalist can rise to the level of Falkner's well-crafted soundscapes, he's going to sound out of place on his own albums if he keeps making records like Is and Always Was. -- AMG

Ovih dana pojavio se novi album DanijelaDžonstona„Is And Always Was”.

Otac mi je Džon Lenon, a Pol Makartni brat blizanac” upućuje u pravom smeru kada je u pitanju album „Is And Always Was”.

Na albumu „Is And Always Was” stvari drugačije stoje. Tamo gde su bili infantilizam i bezazlenost, sada su savršen zvuk i čvrsta struktura. Da li tako treba? Ko zna? Krhko je znanje.
