Drag the River - Bad at Breaking Up (2009)

mp3 VBR~192kpbs | 64MB
Based out of Fort Collins, CO, Drag the River was a musical outlet for some of punk's seasoned veterans. All frontman Chad Price hooked up with Armchair Martian's Jon Snodgrass and Paul Rucker and the Nobodys' J.J. Nobody and formed Drag the River for a country-rock fix in 1996. Hobo's Demo's was released in mid-2000 (reissued by Suburban Home in late 2006) and captured Drag the River's rough-cut rock & roll woven around lyrical introspections. Pedal steel guitarist Zach Boddicker was added to the fray by 2001 and Drag the River prepped for a sophomore effort while playing gigs out west. Closed, which shaped into a booze-soaked storybook of heartbreak and loneliness, was issued on Upland in spring 2002. Recorded that July, Live at the Starlight was also released by the year's end through Mars Motors Records. Chicken Demos appeared in May 2004, comprised mostly of songs that didn't make the cut for Hobo's Demo's, before the Hey Buddies... EP followed late that fall. Boddicker then exited to return to school, and Chad Rex filled in from time to time before Hot Rod Circuit's Casey Prestwood took over steel duties. Rucker exited in late 2005 and was replaced on drums by Dave Barker (ex-Pinhead Circus). Drag the River then released It's Crazy in June 2006, also contributing the track "Portland" to October's Replacements tribute album, We'll Inherit the Earth. They closed out the year on tour dates with Lucero and spent the first part of 2007 on the road opening for Rocky Votolato. The latter tour saw Snodgrass dropping out of the band's ranks midway through (he simply left the tour, not the band), which left fans asking questions. Things didn't really get better for Drag the River, and in May members announced they were amicably going their separate ways.
2009 Drag the River have compiled 7" only tracks, B-sides, their tracks from their split LP with the Dents, and more to make up the 20 song collection CD, Bad at Breaking Up. -- AMG

Pearl And The Beard - God Bless Your Weary Soul, Amanda Richardson (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/308631015/P_tBGBYWSAR_Vic.zip

Pearl and the Beard is three voices, one cello, one guitar, one glockenspiel, one melodica, several drums, one accordion, ninety-six teeth, and one soul. Former strangers Jocelyn Mackenzie, Emily Hope Price, and Jeremy Styles were united in the great city of New York. Each had migrated there from a far corner of the nation with naught but food in their pockets and money in their bellies. Each had the same true love. Since then the three nested, and their unique brand of brightly melodic song craft continues to blossom of its own accord. Pearl and the Beard loves you the way you’ve always been.

Although the album was initially on limited release in May, the official release date was Tuesday, October 27.

What Others Say:

“Sweet, gentle and scrumptious, the music of Brooklyn trio Pearl and the Beard conjures up lazy summer afternoons at just the time we need that kind of thing most. The group consists of just three souls—Jocelyn Mackenzie, Emily Hope Price and Jeremy Styles—but its sophisticated vocal harmonies and crafty arrangements make a big impression on the combo’s recently issued debut CD, God Bless Your Weary Soul, Amanda Richardson.” - Time Out New York

“Pearl and the Beard is modern folk at its most graceful. Sans pretense and fresh with tangled harmonies… their simple lyrics are lifted with airy, soul-turning melodies yet reasoned by earthy sounds. It’s unique and exceptional.” - The Soho Journal

“…shades of Gothic troubadour Will Oldham” - The Washington Post

“…Good, honest, sweet and soft… the interplay between the singers is the highlight of this act’s potential.” - The Deli Magazine

“Quirky Brooklyn folk trio Pearl and the Beard… is a breath of fresh air in New York’s cluttered music scene, and they’re well on their way to success” - BreakThru Radio

“Pearl and the Beard’s gentle folk melodies and graceful, cohesive harmonies beg to be listened to.” – Alyssa Rashbaum (Spin, Vibe, Rebel Spirit, etc.)

Trevor Tchir - Sky Locked Land (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/311429369/TTSLL_Vic.zip

Tchir unites the sounds and images of Canadaâs rural and urban spaces. His music tells stories of the people who work and love in its pulsing cities and austere hinterlands. Over the past decade, Tchir has played his original songs to audiences across the country, sharing the stage with Danny Michel, Amelia Curran, Chloe Albert, AA Sound System and Alya Brook, Dan Bern, Shout Out Out Out Out, Soul Jazz Orchestra, Garnet Rogers, Emm Gryner, Cam Penner, Mark Davis (Old Reliable), Captain Tractor, John Caroll, Jeff Stuart, Bramwell Park, The Provincial Archive, Peter Webb, Five OâClock Charlie, Lindsay Ferguson, Yael Wand, Purple, Julie Larocque, Rozalind Macphail, and many more.

Tchir was born in St. Albert, Alberta, where he first heard Bill Bourne, who was an early inspiration and, for a short time, Tchir's guitar teacher. Tchir left Alberta at seventeen to work as a page in the House of Commons. His first years in Ottawa brought fruitful creative collaboration, spawning Tchir's first release, The Way I Feel Today (1999). In 2001, Tchir released November, whose songs center on themes of devotion, ecological responsibility, and the place of spirituality in a world increasingly bent on economic and technological efficiency. From 2001-04, Tchir co-hosted Ottawa's popular Café Nostalgica weekly open stage with poet and partner, Kristy McKay, and was co-producer of the compilation, Thursday Heroes: Live at Café Nostalgica (2003). In 2005, Tchir released Wooden Castles Fall, which features backing by long time friends and musical collaborators Peter Webb and members of Soul Jazz Orchestra (Pierre Chretien, Phil Lafreniere, Ray Murray, Steve Patterson). Its closing song, âAthabasca,â was recently licensed for Leslie Iwerks' film, Downstream, shortlisted for the 2009 Academy Award for short documentary, about the environmental health hazards of Alberta oil development. Tchir returned to Edmonton in 2005. He holds a PhD in Political Philosophy and wrote his thesis on Hannah Arendtâs analogy between performing arts and political action.

Anne Hills - Points of View (11/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/311417682/AHPoV_Vic.zip

After a decade of imaginative, rewarding collaborations with fellow musicians (including Tom Paxton and Michael Smith), Victorian-era poets (James Whitcomb Riley) and child naturalists (Opal Whiteley), Anne Hills' eighth solo album, Points of View, marks her long-awaited return to her own original songs.<P>

Anne's multiple careers as an award-winning musician, poet, and social worker, as well as actress, writer, poet, artist, wife, and mother, infuse the lyrics of the CD's eleven originals with graceful poetry and real-life experience, and her empathic and caring spirit lights each song from within. The characters and situations she describes all ring true because they are universal, bringing Anne's underlying themes of individuality, diversity, love, loss and resilience in a changing world to vivid life. Colorful natural images are woven into many songs, providing a backdrop of peaceful perspective to human turmoil. <P>

The CD's bracing opener, "I Am You," is a view of America through the eyes of every immigrant or unwilling slave who has arrived here and become an integral part of our society. Elsewhere, Anne focuses on more specific, but equally pervasive, human circumstances. "The Farm" is a quietly despairing look at economic hard times and the way men often react to job loss; "Romeo and Juliet," with music composed by jazz drummer Peter Erskine (Weather Report, Yellowjackets), is a near-classical retelling of those doomed lovers' plight. <P>

The natural world is the setting for "Pennsylvania," the tranquil meditation of a lone motorist on a snowy highway, while "Two Year Winter" uses the season to measure deep sorrow. A cold, pre-dawn sidewalk is the starting point for "My Daughter & Vincent van Gogh," a true story about a family trip to a National Gallery exhibit. Less fortunate children are the protagonists in "I'm Nobody" - "I'm nobody and I don't care/If you look in my eyes you'll see nobody there." The broadest perspective of all comes from above in "The Moon's Song," a lunar look at Earth that reminds us "Galaxies are born, planets come and go/Nothing in the universe stays the same, you know." <P>

Complementing Anne's original songs, some co-written with longtime collaborators Cindy Mangsen, Michael Smith and Allen Power, are versions of Leonard Cohen's vignette of a slow-motion break-up ("Alexandra Leaving") and Peter Mayer's "Holy Now," an acceptance of life's beauty. <P> Although Anne's achingly warm soprano voice, guitar and banjo are the musical core of Points of View, the songs receive sympathetic and versatile coloration by co-producer/multi-instrumentalist Scott Petito, Grammy winning cellist Eugene Friesen, keyboardist Peter Vitalone, drummer Sam Zucchini, and harmony vocalists Mangsen and Priscilla Herdman.

Frown Pow'r - Don't Doubt It: Shout It! (2010)

Kod: Označi sve
    http://www.zshare.net/download/68564076199e7d05/

Recorded in a whip, bang, flash weekend by five guys, one producer, and two dogs in a central Arkansas town with a population in double-digits, "Don't Doubt It: Shout It!" is 12 whiskey-eyed stompsongs laid out with a sound that toes the line around Black Lips, The Replacements, Uncle Tupelo, and Daniel Johnston. Joyously sloppy and belligerently optimistic, the debut by Frown Pow'r had a cult following even before its release thanks to the band's notorious live shows and keen-eared radio DJs and bloggers from Little Rock to New York City. It's a multi-instrumental, non-linear novella, each track a chapter that gets clearer with each listen. Like the South they revel in and sing about, it's hollering, dusty, and thick-headed. It's a tin-eared, drunken 2 a.m. bonfire singalong. Like the best of cult albums, it's not always pretty. Hell, sometimes it's slap ugly. But that's the appeal, dig?

"'Don't Doubt It, Shout It' by Frown Pow'r sounds like the Beatles if they came from the United States instead of England and kept playing in a little club instead of touring the world. And I mean that all in a good way. Maybe if the Beatles had followed this path they would've ended up this good."
- David Fair of HALF JAPANESE

"The Frown Pow'r debut is 'gonna surprise some folks. An epic work of southern attitude and noise. Lo-fi party music for the intellectually bent and existentially inclined. These songs will stay with you. If you don't like it, you just haven't listened to it enough."
- Dan Johnson, Arkansas musician, hard-as-nails critic

"Sounds like church...catchy and spastic."
- 607, genius rapper extraordinaire

"Their sounds fit into a mood of whiskey shots, lawn chairs, and low lighting...they can wheel out genuine keg party anthems then lay down some heavy nostalgia...[not] merely an artful group of Arkansas boys with a few good instruments: they're the real deal."
-Cadron Chronicle Blog

"So good that it's destined to toil in obscurity, waiting for people who deserve it. A 'Black Monk Time' for the Garageband generation. When your kids are working in a record store, they're gonna love this, so don't look like a dumbass to your children 20 years from now when they ask you where you were on Frown Pow'r, okay?"

Alberta Cross - Broken Side Of Time (2009)

mp3 320kpbs | 110MB | 44:38 min.
Alberta Cross are a blues and country-influenced roots rock act drawing their sound from the foundation built by the Band and Neil Young. The London group's main members and songwriters are bassist Terry Wolfers and vocalist/guitarist Petter Ericson Stakee, who as a child traveled with his singer/songwriter father. The full band includes John Alexander Ericson (organ) and Seb Sternberg (drums). The self-produced EP The Thief & the Heartbreaker was delivered through the prestigious U.K. label Fiction in May 2007, followed by Broken Side of Time in 2009. -- AMG

This ten track debut fumes testosterone and oozes hair-rock brute; epic guitar onslaughts, eerie vocals and firing cymbals, indeed it’s a rather spectacular effort by the wandering four.
There’s something of the Deep South preacher man in Stakee’s yearn ('City Walls'), though at times the incredibly melodic guitar ('The Thief and Heartbreaker') make bare the crew's British genesis. A somewhat dark album for dark times and tragic lullabies for the lonesome, ‘Broken Side of Time’ is an ode to the forefathers of dirty blues-rock.

UNEXPECTED, encompasses a diversity of styles and influences that Stone has distilled over the years - rap, R&B, soul, funk and more - and weaves them together in a narrative that addresses life's ups and downs, but ultimately strikes a redemptive chord. From the get-go, the quick and funky title track - with its backbeat inspired by Sly Stone's 1971 hit, "Family Affair" - warns the listener to "Prepare yourself for just about anything." Equally energetic is the album's first single, "I Ain't Hearin' U," a song that decries rumor and gossip. UNEXPECTED represents a turning point for Angie Stone - not just in her career, but in her life and her world view.

The Watson Twins - Talking To You, Talking To Me (02/2010)

mp3 256 kpbs | 74MB
Following on the critical success of Rabbit Fur Coat, their 2006 collaboration with Jenny Lewis, Southern Manners (2006 self-released EP) and Fire Songs, their 2008 Vanguard Records full-length debut, The Watson Twins return with Talking To You, Talking To Me (February 9th/Vanguard) their most groove-heavy and ambitious album to date. The 12 songs on TTY, TTM, produced by Russell Pollard and J. Soda of Everest, display a new sonic direction previously only hinted at in past efforts. Yes, the folk, country and Americana roots of Leigh and Chandra Watson remain, but the duo also explores and reveals their long-held love of R&B, Bossa Nova, indie pop and most prominently, classic soul. "We wanted your body to move with every song," says Leigh.
Where the gorgeous Fire Songs was slower and more meditative, TTY, TTM showcases the twins' admiration of classic soul vocalists, torch singers and chanteuses such as Etta James and Aretha Franklin. "I think elements of that existed on Fire Songs, but they were buried and just hinted at that," says Chandra. "When you're insecure about something, you don't necessarily have the confidence to invoke those styles."
Those insecurities can be laid to rest with TTY, TTM. The soulfulness of "Midnight" sounds like a heartbroken lover crying the blues at a late night bar. "Harpeth River" updates the vibe of classic Portishead. The Hammond B3 and defiant vocals of "Devil in You" could be a lost b-side to Dusty in Memphis, while "Savin' You" and "Snow Canyons" hearken back to the pair's more traditional Americana-based tracks.
In June 2009, having already written the lyrics for the album separately, the twins, Pollard and Soda decamped to a remote cabin in the High Sierras near Yosemite National Park with no phones, television or music. In four days, armed with only guitars, a drum kit, and computer to record the results, the foursome finished the sketches for TTY, TTM. (The album would later be recorded at Fairfax Recordings on the same mixing console as Pink Floyd's The Wall. It features prominent contributions by members of Everest and My Morning Jacket's Bo Koster.) --- http://www.vanguardrecords.com/bio.asp?idArtist=55

Various Artists - Introducing Townes Van Zandt Via The Great Unknown 2009.

slika

Townes Van Zandt is a name bandied about as an artist you surely must have heard about?

John Townes Van Zandt, March 7, 1944 - January 1, 1997, was a singer-songwriter and poet. He was too fond of drink and drugs and suffered from manic depression. He usually appeared at small venues, but you get the impression that today he could fill the Albert Hall. He never had a hit himself, though Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard scored a Billboard country No.1 with his ‘Pancho And Lefty’.

This compilation brings us 19 of his compositions covered by contemporary musicians from Australia, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, the UK and US. Represented are solo and band settings, from stark to sophisticated. Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time deliver ‘Pancho And Lefty’, Kevin Tihista treats us to ‘Still Looking For You’, while Chris Mills adds the dark edge to ‘Tecumseh Valley’. The Be Good Tanyas perform ‘Waiting Around To Die’, which has appeared on the American TV drama series ‘Breaking Bad’. More unusual presentations include Telafonica’s ‘St John The Gambler’ and Jad Fair’s ’Turnstyled, Junkpiled’.

This album works on two different levels, as an introduction to the work of a great songwriter and as a sampler of some splendid modern performers.

Mia Riddle - Tumble & Drag (2009)

Mia Riddle sings in a plain, unaffected little voice that, when paired with her bruising observations and the skeletal backup of these straightforward bar-rock songs, hits like ice water. Strictly speaking, nothing much goes one here – most numbers here are a backbeat and some open chords, snatches of piano, verse-chorus-verse, repeat – but the riveting honesty and grain in Mia's voice stabs right through, and they don't stumble onto a single stale-sounding moment over the course of the record. The riveting melancholy of "Suitcase" could hang with Gillian Welch, while the stunning a capella "Texas," built on nothing but stomps, handclaps and gospel harmonies, shows just where Mia's heart hails from. - Review by Amelia Raitt

Pascal Babare - Thunderclap Spring (11/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/308753104/PBTS_Vic.zip

It’s a risky business covering a classic song by a great band, especially one with the emotional resonance of Ceremony by Joy Division. Overproduced pop bands find themselves insulting the fans, while wannabe-mainstream indie bands expose their lack of original tunes and production.

Pascal Babare, on the other hand, is an indier-than-indie, lo-fi minimalist whose field recordings and ambient sounds are often as prominent as his shuffling percussion, gently strummed guitars, creaking harmonium, and plangent vocals. By choosing Ceremony he doesn’t just evoke the sensitive, emotional side of Joy Division, but even more strongly evokes fellow fans like Xiu Xiu, Codeine, and Low (stars in this writer’s personal firmament), who each brought a naturalism to the songs they covered, and found the pastoral, calm centre in the turmoil of a band often characterized as urban, proto-industrial, bleak, and nihilistic.

Babare was born in Australia, raised in ashrams, and has arrived in London by way of Japan, aged 19. The prevailing mood of his debut album is a peaceful, albeit wistful evocation of misted hyperboreal forests, and – since he mentions it – an idealised version of commune lifestyle, tepees and jam-sessions among the trees. Many of the individual tunes are so subtle that they don’t impinge any more than their neighbours, but the flipside of that is: Thunderclap Spring works as a suite you want to hear in its entirety. Penultimate track Sweet Bees, Brother Bear does stand out, with its loose, powerful drumming, and leads into the gorgeously short-and-sweet Lanterns whose double-tracked vocals and refrain of “if we go / we all go together…” make it the most understated sing-along album-closer ever.

In its unity this feels greater than the sum of its parts, making it an auspicious debut. As latter-day hippie whimsy goes, there’s more of a comparison to the serenity of Taken by Trees than Devendra Banhart’s occasionally cloying silliness, but there’s also the sense of a pull toward cult greatness, just as there was on Banhart’s early records.

She Keeps Bees

She Keeps Bees are a bass-less boy/girl duo from Brooklyn who play raw, stripped-down blues-rock using a guitar and drums and little else. A couple as well as a musical partnership, they do their recording in their bedroom, in an apartment block with pigeons, with just a computer and a microphone. The pigeons don't contribute in any way to their music. The girl does the gritty, raspy bellowing and the boy keeps the beat, so naturally we're going to say they're like the White Stripes in reverse. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Jessica Larrabee has been in bands before, and it was she who taught recording engineer and producer Andy LaPlant, who had just moved to New York from New Orleans, how to play drums – her old man was the sticksman in a funk group. Larrabee's voice, steeped in the earthy R&B her parents played her as a kid, dominates their songs, and her singing style has been compared to everyone from Cat Power to Amy Winehouse and Polly Harvey, and most people who have heard it seem to be convinced that it is the essence of wanton abandon. Words like "sexy" and "raunchy" have been used to describe it, as though hollering and humping are synonymous.

We have no way of measuring the noise Larrabee and LaPlant make when they're at it, but we can quantify the racket on their recordings, to the nearest decibel: it's loud. Very loud. Even turned right down it hurts the ears, in the same way that Larrabee's shouting must hurt her belly and LaPlant's primal thump must hurt his hands. Even their mostly one-word song titles seem to scream from the sleeve of their forthcoming EP and debut album: Gimmie, Release, Focus, Strike ... they don't have exclamation marks, but they don't need them. Even when they use more than one word – Get Gone, Pile Up – they read like a series of commands, as though the listener is being somehow admonished. Naughty listener. You've been a bad boy/girl. That kind of thing. We've always been a bit partial to a stern reprimand, ever since that time at school ... and we're a bit partial to She Keeps Bees, even though we know there are other duos out there doing fairly similar things, being similarly reverential to the blues, reviving it with the same loving care. Not that we're afraid of saying anything negative about them, of course, but that Larrabee ... she's scary.

Pokey Lafarge - Marmalade (2007)

mp3 320kpbs | 74MB | 37:29 min. | Folk, Folk Blues
Since before the 20th century, it has been the idea behind the work of the songster to showcase a wide variety of playing and songwriting styles. Timelessly original, Louisville, Ky’s Pokey LaFarge delivers a contagious mix of folk, ragtime, and blues that will warm your blood! With dark and dreamy lyrics and a deeply powerful voice, Pokey presents a lights out performance wrapped in cynical humor and quirky style. He has also been known to highlight his original sets with accapella gospel numbers while clapping and stomping. “Marmalade”, the debut record from Pokey LaFarge is like a first novel; raw, visionary, and passionate. It is a must have for any lover of true acoustic music. It features all original tunes by Pokey LaFarge.
Pokey’s music really started to take shape in 2001 with a string band known as The Schwillbillies. Public acclaim soon followed in local and national newspapers as well as local and national television and radio stations. After three years of nationwide performing he left the ensemble to pursue a solo career in 2004. Years of experience on the road developed his music into what it is today: personal, even sorrowful at times, yet retaining his stylish and joyous perspective in his music. LaFarge has had the honor of sharing stages with prominent and influential acts such as Old Crow Medicine Show, Backyard Tire Fire, The Crooked Jades, The Derek Trucks Band, Nick Africano, Robinella, and Donna the Buffalo. Pokey has also toured extensively with the Hackensaw Boys where he is a guest mandolin player. <CDbaby>

VA-Local Customs: Downriver Revival (2009.)

slika

Despite all the superlatives lobbed at the Numero Group's catalog, the descriptions that really stick often come from the reissue label's own liner notes. Along with the warm patina of age emanating from re-mastered recordings and the cracked, yellowing photographs, these narratives are prime examples of music anthropology, thick with details that amplify each song's impact. The label exceeds its own storytelling standards with Local Customs: Downriver Revival, a collection of music recorded at Double U Sound, a rec room turned recording studio in suburban Detroit. The 24-track guided tour through Double U's history is paired with a detailed multimedia DVD that includes a 30-minute documentary and an interactive sound vault with over 200 extra tracks, arranged by individual boxes of tape. It not only makes most bonus DVDs look like cheap wastes of plastic and time, it lets listeners virtually walk into the lost basement studio in Ecorse, Mich., and view some of the people and places that seeped into Double U's reels of tape.

Proprietor Felton Williams, an unassuming Ford Motor Company electrician and member of the Church of the Living God, managed to piece together a truly DIY studio operation. While the self-taught electrical whiz's longed-for hit factory never materialized, his dedication and open-door policy unwittingly turned Double U and its small stable of labels, mostly active from 1967 to 1981, into a local music time capsule.

Williams' church connections and devotion to gospel weren't uncommon, but the variety of sacred music he recorded stands out. Toledo, Ohio, singer and fellow congregant Shirley Ann Lee's sweet, somber voice graces "There's a Light", which tests the fidelity of Felton's setup, and "Please Accept My Prayer", a bluesy end-of-service ode to the Lord. Mother-daughter duo the Coleman Family drop some rambling, back porch Appalachia-infected tunes and the Apostles of Music deliver a showy, funked-up version of "Wade in the Water". Some of the most peculiar songs, including Calvin Cooke's "What Happens to People", incorporate Church of the Living God's unique infatuation with the sitar and pedal steel guitar, producing an odd, wobbly twang.

Equally intriguing secular sounds, ranging from sunny vocal harmonies to funk workouts, also blasted out of Williams' basement, like the Organics' Hammond-flavored instrumental "Foot Stumpin'". The true outlier of the bunch is "Running Mod"-- with the Quadrophenia-appropriate chorus "You can't catch a running mod"-- by Young Generation, a cut-rate local garage band fronted by black singer Alan Crowell.

But the album is just a warm-up for the DVD's wealth of music from artists on the CD and those that didn't make the cut. After hearing jam sessions and alternate takes, a Shirley Ann Lee radio show, Felton Williams' pedal steel lessons, the Mergers' oddball organ rocker "Unworthy Americans", and even the disorienting sounds of deteriorating tapes, it's hard to imagine uncovering more layers to the story. The documentary includes interviews with and performances by Williams, Lee, and Cooke, who rocks the pedal steel. Footage of sunlight striking a white cross and shots of weeds cracking through the asphalt of crumbling houses make the setting almost palpable. It's one thing to hear a tape of the young Shirley Ann Lee, but to watch her older self gently sing along to a recording of "Please Accept My Prayer" in the front seat of a parked car, and then whisper "thank you" as the shot fades to black, isn't easily captured in words. Downriver Revival not only adds a chapter to Numero's legacy of spotlighting the art and ambitions of forgotten artists, but it lets listeners share some of that rush of discovery.

Within four walls in Brooklyn, Jon Philpot, Adam Wills, Sadek Bazaara and Joe Stickney have mined the democracy of their collaboration, plus the endless hours of stream-of-consciousness recorded documentation of rehearsals over the past year to conceive the crystalline form of "Beats Rest Forth Mouth", their 2nd album, their exaltation. Pitchfork called their first album "a true cohesive work in an era when the album-as-art form appears to be slowly dying" and The Onion found it "a powerful, functional mix of This Heat, '70's soft rock, early Genesis, and oddly, later Pink Floyd."

Silje Nergaard, Sidsel Endresen and Rebekka Bakken – in the last years many singers have left Norwegian shores to venture and re-map the world of jazz and related music. 37 year old Kristin Asbjørnsen has also long secured her place in this new landscape. Or should one speak of many places? She belongs to a set of young singers for whom borders have become flowing and for which jazz acts as a starting but not necessarily an end point of musical pathways. After guest performances in different bands and the attention attracting gospel record “Wayfaring Stranger”, Asbjørnsen has now released her first album with exclusively own compositions: “The Night Shines Like a Day”. In this, all the musical experiences that she has made in jazz, blues, world music and pop in the last 15 years seem to crystallise. “These songs” she said in an interview “are witness to the strong hope and belief that something broken can also be transformed into beauty”.
The pianist Tord Gustavsen with whom Asbjörnsen has worked together many a time, has been substantial contributor to this fragile cycle of songs. He can also be heard at the festival with his own quartet.

Dawn Kinnard - The Courtesy Fall (2008)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/308229007/DKTCF_Vic.zip

Dawn Kinnard grew up in Pennsylvania, though from the sound of this singer-songwriter's first album you'd think that she's spent her entire life nestled on the steps of the bars and churches of the South, which, suitably, is where she was first discovered- in a tiny bar in Nashville, Tennessee.

This album positively drips with Southern Gothic sleeplessness and anxiety with Kinnard's voice a constant lipstick-smeared, whiskey-glass-rolling-across-an-overworn-bar presence.

Kinnard's tone is oft compared to KT Tunstall but in reality is more like a weatherbeaten relative of Nina Persson of The Cardigans. Bolshy, angular guitar riffs swirl and uncoil around the crepuscular uptightness of the lyrics of Devil's Flame where Kinnard does battle with the kind of agnostic brow-beating that the Arcade Fire have been so far calling their own: ''You can't curl up you can't crawl away. You can't tell God you have a mental illness and you're exempt for the day''.

The highlight is the bluesy, string-drenched sweetness of Fortune Teller, a stunning evocation of confessed regret and caprice with Kinnard's voice rolling like a gentle tide through the dusty halls of a long closed seaside cabaret hall.

Collaborators include Cerys Matthews and Ed Harcourt, who duets as the doleful critic, counterpointing Kinnard's innocent declarations of desire on album centerpiece Clear The Way. Matthews, a fellow converted denizen of the Deep South co-writes the stop-start snarl of One Little Step Away.

This is a hugely mature offering, steeped in the twilight world of leaf strewn verandas and slow footsteps, with Kinnard's voice and lyrics a hugely charismatic mixture of deflated thrills and whispered promises of the future.

Caledonia - We Are America (2009)

mp3 VBR~192kpbs | 73MB | 52:00 min.
East coast indie-rock outfit Caledonia demonstrates that genre labels are just empty words. Their eclectic third record, We Are America, is like a Rorschach blot-test for the ears: you can hear influences from any musical genre if you listen for them.
The album opens with the Europop-inspired “Restless Year,” then moves on to a decidedly country clap-along called “Scott’s House.” It makes a stop at the oddly danceable “Friday Night Rock Song,” before visiting '80s new wave with “Same Old Lies.” But in this case, eclectic doesn’t mean incoherent. We Are America is tied together by an overarching distinctive folk-rock sound that Eastern Canada produces so well.
Another marker of their eastern sensibility is the guest appearance by acclaimed Halifax spoken word artist Tanya Davis on “Winter Drips from Trees.” This track also happens to have the most politically charged lyrics. But for a record entitled We Are America, most of the songs are surprisingly personal and non-political.
All five members of Caledonia are skilled musicians. However, special mention must be given to the talents of Ian Bent, who plays the keys and gets a spotlight solo in “Leaving Ian in New Orleans,” a Billy Joel-esque N'Orleans jazz piece.
Caledonia are a testament to the fact that it’s possible for a band to be defiantly independent without being pretentious. We Are America is definitely an album for people with an interest in good Canadian folk music.

The Dry Spells - Too Soon For Flowers [2009]

mp3 VBR~240kpbs | 89MB | 50:37 min.
Too Soon for Flowers is the debut album from the San Francisco by way of Bard College group the Dry Spells, a group that features several members of Citay (Tahlia Harbour, April Hayley, and Adria Otte, who all were a part of the Dry Spells before they teamed up with Citay). Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon" is the last track on this album, and that pretty much says it all: the Dry Spells sound kind of like Fleetwood Mac (or more accurately, Stevie Nicks) revisited -- they're witchy, woodsy, folksy, and mysterious. They also sound like twangy, melodica-toting gypsies, especially on tracks like "Too Soon for Flowers" and "Evangeline." When they manage to pull off this eclectic, earthy sound well, they sound strange and darn near breathtaking, especially when it comes to the mountaintop-high harmonies on "Sruti." There are a few places, though ("Black Is the Color," the intro to "Sruti"), where the Dry Spells sound cloyingly new agey, almost as if they were Loreena McKennitt redux; Harbour, Hayley, and Otte's wispy-wild vocal harmonies sound fluffily, frothily esoteric when they're paired with too much "mystical" instrumentation. So that's Too Soon for Flowers' first stumble; the second is the band's cover of "Rhiannon." It's serviceable, it's loyal, and all it does is make you want to put down Too Soon for Flowers and pull out Fleetwood Mac's back catalog. It's the kind of thing that makes this album sound a bit slapdash -- and for a disc that was presumably around six or seven years in the making (the Dry Spells formed in 2002), that's not a good sign. -- AMG
