Inside Improvisation Series, Vol. 1


This is the first in a series of books and audio/video recordings which describe a simple and pragmatic approach to improvisation. While focusing on the jazz idiom, the techniques discussed are applicable to many styles of music and all instruments, be it rock guitar, jazz saxophone, or the solos of the fusion keyboardist. The system presented in this volume offers a tangible pathway to inside the creative imagination by getting inside harmony, inside the changes.

Chord changes are included for C Concert, B flat and E flat instruments. In addition the book includes transposed examples for all instruments (C treble clef, B flat, E flat and bass clef).

The accompanying recording has been designed for use in conjunction with each of the chapter assignments. There are nine tunes for you to play along with, each played at a slow and then medium tempo featuring Garry Dial on piano, Dave Santoro on bass and Alan Dawson on drums, plus 12 demonstration tracks performed by the author on piano and/or tenor saxophone.

THESAURUS OF INTERVALLIC MELODIES

Stamps from Bulgaria is the result of a long-term investigation into Bulgarian Folklore and its correlation with other music traditions and instruments. For me, there were two personal challenges in this project: as composer and as pianist.
My approach as composer was to avoid rearranging these songs, but rather to treat them as any other compositional element such as a major triad, a rhythmical phrase, intervals, etc. Thus establishing a process of de- and re-construction, which will eventually result in a new musical form, which is sometimes closer to the original than others. On selecting the songs, I searched carefully for any personal and emotional connection and/or something unique (such as odd time measure, lyrics, or just a melody), which also contained enough dramatic potential, yet leaving room for exploration. As a pianist I referred to the traditional singing and instruments in an attempt to apply their specific characteristics on the piano keyboard. I treated the piano as a melodic rather than harmonic instrument, which is its most common function.
All songs come from different regions of Bulgaria. Some are more popular than others. It is of course arguable which songs are actually Bulgarian, but this issue gives another dimension to my research and poses the question of national identity - a much discussed issue in a modern multi-cultural society.

The mastery and vision of the enduring Marc Ribot shine through on this release. Although there have been many attempts to produce authentic indigenous music of various cultures, most have fallen short; this album succeeds in the wake of failure. Ribot delves deep into Cuban rhythms, and indeed the album is a tribute to the Cuban master Arsenio Rodriguez. Here Ribot finds an authentic Cuban sound employing traditional instrumentation: upright bass, wood blocks, cherke, and other percussion sounds. The performance is inspired, and the band consistently tears through Rodriguez's material, as well as some of their own. Ribot's guitar work nears perfection, and he proves himself to be the most soulful white alive. Songs like "Aqui Como Alla" and "Postizo" confirm these assertions. Although this album does not present the iconoclastic Ribot of The Book of Heads fame, it is an excellent album.

Biography

Eclectic guitarist Marc Ribot has recorded a wide variety of music over his career, working with Elvis Costello and on Tom Waits' Rain Dogs. He has also recorded compositions for classical guitar by Haiti's Franz Casseus, a friend of his parents, and has participated actively in New York City's downtown avant-garde music scene for some time, most notably as a member of the Lounge Lizards. Ribot's solo albums include Rootless Cosmopolitans and Requiem for What's His Name; later Ribot worked with his avant-garde jazz/rock fusion band, Shrek, whose eponymous debut was released in 1994. With a new group, he also issued Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos in 1998; Muy Divertido followed two years later. Additionally, Ribot played a major part in initiating the Radical New Jewish Culture Festival in Germany and New York City. Since that time, he has released a bevy of recordings including, among others, The Prosthetic Cubans in 1998, Muy Divertido! in 2000, Scelsi Morning in 2003, Asmodeus: The Book of Angels, Vol. 7 in 2007 and Ceramic Dog in 2008.

С 1958 г. работала на музыкальной сцене Архипелага. Первоначально исполняла песни в стиле «морна» (порт. morna) — жанр, традиционный для Островов Зелёного Мыса, а также «фаду» (порт. fado), африканские песни. Поёт на кабовердийском креольском — диалекте португальского языка. Акустическое обрамление голосу составляют рояль, гавайская гитара, аккордеон, скрипки и кларнет.
На сцену Эвора неизменно выходит босиком — это символическая дань бедности, в которой жили (и продолжают жить) её земляки на Островах Зелёного Мыса.
Свой первый сольный альбом певица выпустила в сорок пять лет. Этим альбомом начинается её сотрудничество с Lusafrica, которое длится до сих пор. В начале 80-х начала тур по Европе. В 1988 году стала знаменита на весь мир.
