A Shock To The System - Soundtrack (By Gary Chang) (1990)

slika

A Shock to the System is about a family man named Graham Marshall (played by Caine in the film), a long-time executive in a large advertising company who unexpectedly is passed over for promotion. While Marshall himself can live with it, his nagging wife (Kurtz) is devastated and continually reproaches her husband for his apparent lack of stamina and willpower.

An unfortunate accident on the underground caused by Marshall in which a panhandler is killed, but which goes unnoticed, gives him a whole new set of ideas as far as his future life is concerned. Deciding to take revenge on all the people who have caused him problems in his life, Marshall starts meticulously planning their violent deaths. This includes his young rival at the office and his wife, whom he eventually electrocutes (hence the ambiguous title). When none of the murders is linked to him, Marshall feels confirmed in his belief that killing off everyone who has harmed him is the right thing to do and soon passes the point of no return. At the end of Brett's novel, however, overwhelming evidence is suddenly brought against him for a murder he did not commit.

This ending was first used by Anthony Berkeley (writing as Francis Iles) in his 1931 novel Malice Aforethought (see whodunnit). It should also be noted that the ending of the movie version is completely different, with Marshall exulting in his new life of crime and in no danger whatsoever of being brought to justice.

Plot
Long considered a classic of European film noir, this existential gangster drama from French director Jean-Pierre Melville was released in the United States only in a severely truncated, re-edited, and overdubbed version entitled The Godson. Thirty years after its initial public airing, Le Samourai (1967) finally saw a limited American release in its intended form. Alain Delon stars as Jef Costello, a professional Parisian assassin-for-hire who, by nature of his work's solitary demands, has no friends. Although he is loved by Jane Lagrange (Natalie Delon, the star's real-life wife), Costello knows that Jane already has a lover. After he successfully wipes out a nightclub owner at the behest of his boss, Costello discovers that he was seen by the club's pianist, Valerie (Cathy Rosier). Although he survives a police lineup thanks to a lie offered up by the fearless Valerie, Costello's alibi disintegrates rapidly and his shadowy employer takes out a contract on him. As he seeks revenge on his betrayer, Costello must also stay one step ahead of a wily, determined superintendent (Francois Perier). Melville's film influenced several other filmmakers and projects, most notably director John Woo's The Killer (1989). ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Zodiac - Soundtrack (2007)

slika

Zodiac is a 2007 American film directed by David Fincher and based on Robert Graysmith's non-fiction book of the same name. The Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. joint production stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr..

Zodiac tells the story of the hunt for a notorious serial killer known as "Zodiac" who haunted the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 1960s and early 1970s, leaving several victims in his wake and taunting police with letters and ciphers mailed to newspapers. The case remains one of San Francisco's most infamous unsolved crimes.

Fincher, screenwriter James Vanderbilt, and producer Brad Fischer spent 18 months conducting their own investigation and research into the Zodiac murders. During filming, Fincher employed the digital Thomson Viper Filmstream camera to shoot the film. Contrary to popular belief, Zodiac was not shot entirely digitally; traditional high-speed film cameras were used for slow-motion murder sequences.

Reviews for the film were highly positive. It did not perform strongly at the North American box office, grossing only USD $33 million. However, it performed better in other parts of the world, earning $51 million. This brought its box office total to $84 million, with a budget of $65 million spent on its production.
The film starts in July 1969 with the Zodiac killer’s second attack, the shooting of Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau at a lovers' lane in Vallejo. Mageau survives while Ferrin dies from her injuries. A letter written by the Zodiac arrives at the San Francisco Chronicle in August of that same year.

Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.) is a Chronicle crime reporter. Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a political cartoonist there. The newspaper receives encrypted letters that the killer sends, taunting the police. Because of Graysmith's status as a cartoonist, he is not taken seriously by Avery and the editors and is excluded from the initial details about the killings despite his interest in the case. In particular, he is drawn to the encrypted code that is included with the letters and is given access to one. When he is able to crack one of the codes and makes several correct guesses about the killer's actions, Avery begins sharing information with him.

The Zodiac killer stabs Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard (Pell James) at Lake Berryessa in Napa County. Shepard dies as a result of the attack. Soon afterwards, cab driver Paul Stine is shot and killed in Presidio Heights. San Francisco police detectives Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and his partner Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) are assigned to the case, liaising with other detectives such as Jack Mulanax (Elias Koteas) in Vallejo and Ken Narlow (Donal Logue) in Napa. The killer, or someone posing as him, continues to toy with authorities by speaking on the phone with celebrity lawyer Melvin Belli (Brian Cox) when he makes an appearance on a television talk show. Avery and Graysmith form an alliance, delving deeper into the case.

In 1971, Toschi, Armstrong and Mulanax question Arthur Leigh Allen (John Carroll Lynch), a potential suspect in the case. However, a handwriting expert (Philip Baker Hall) insists that Allen did not write the Zodiac letters. Avery receives a new letter threatening his life. He becomes increasingly paranoid and turns to drugs and alcohol. At one point, he shares information with a rival police force which angers Toschi and Armstrong.

Years pass and careers change. Avery leaves the Chronicle. Armstrong quits the homicide division, Toschi is demoted for supposedly forging a Zodiac letter. Graysmith, meanwhile, continues his own in-depth investigation, interviewing witnesses and police detectives involved in the case. Obsessing over the case, he begins receiving anonymous phone calls with heavy breathing (on the night of Ferrin's death, Graysmith realized someone prank called her family doing the same thing), he loses his job and his wife Melanie (Chloë Sevigny) takes their children with her.

Graysmith persistently contacts Toschi about the Zodiac murders and eventually impresses the veteran detective with his knowledge of the case. While Toschi cannot directly give Graysmith access to the information he discovered over the years, he provides contacts of other police departments in counties where the other murders occur. The cartoonist acquires more information that points to Allen as the Zodiac, and although circumstantial evidence points him out, the hard evidence such as fingerprints, and handwriting exonerate him.

In 1983, a full 14 years after the original slayings, Graysmith tracks down Allen to a Vallejo hardware store. Eight years after that, Mageau identifies Allen from a police mugshot.

Final title cards, however, inform the audience that Allen's DNA did not match samples gathered from the Zodiac letters.

Summary
After spending 20 years in Canada, Hector Valentin returns to his family home in Vosges, France, to inherit his father’s run-down sawmill. Despite strong competition from a rival firm, who have more up-to-date equipment, Hector is determined to make a success of his father’s former wood-cutting business. By a stroke of luck, he runs into two unemployed men, Laurent and Mick who are looking for work. Laurent persuades Hector to recruit a group of prisoners on parole. At first, the arrangement works out well – Hector manages to get the sawmill working again and his business is soon in production. Then things begin to turn sour. First, Hector’s competitors start to use foul play to try and wreck his business. Then Laurent loses interest when he realises that a man he had sworn to take revenge on is not in the group of prisoners, as he had reckoned. Hector’s dream soon turns into a nightmare…

Critique
A striking combination of action thriller and sardonic western, Les Grandes gueules is probably the French film that comes closest in style and substance to the tough Hollywood cowboy films of the 1950s and 1960s. With its expansive location photography (which makes the best of the Vosges setting), rough characters and rough-and-tumble set-tos, the film certainly bears a striking similarity to the traditional American western.
The film was based on a novel by José Giovanni, a popular writer who began writing thriller novels before turning to film making. One of the most accomplished exponents of the thriller genre, Giovanni manages to bring to his dramas a sense of hard-edged realism and authenticity, and this shows in the films that he both scripted and directed. In Les Grandes gueules, Giovanni had the good fortune to work with director Robert Enrico, who also distinguished himself in the thriller line. Enrico’s tough brand of film noir was widely appreciated in the 1970s, the decade when the policier genre was at the height of its popularity.

Les Grandes gueules benefits from a strong cast, made up mainly of archetypal hard guys, including the hardest of them all (at least in French cinema of the 1960s), Lino Ventura. The casting of Bourvil as Hector is perhaps unexpected but works perfectly. Although better known for his comic performances, Bourvil had proven that he can take on straight roles, and here he is challenged with possibly the most serious part in his career – and he pulls it off magnificently. The Bourvil-Ventua pairing works surprisingly well, their bond of comradeship showing an obvious tension, and their final scenes together have a genuine sense of pathos.

François De Roubaix’s atmospheric music complements the film’s alternately alluring and moody photography, both emphasising the beauty and austerity of the location.

Far from being a shallow imitation of the Hollywood western, this film takes the best elements of that genre and fashions a unique and powerful drama around the themes of companionship, revenge and redemption.

The Prize Winner Of Defiance Ohio - Soundtrack (By John Frizzell) (2005)

slika

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio is a 2005 film written and directed by Jane Anderson, based on the book by Terry "Tuff" Ryan.
Synopsis
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio is based on the true story of housewife Evelyn Ryan, who helped support her family by winning entries in jingle-writing contests.

Evelyn's husband, Kelly, failed to support their family in part due to apparent alcoholism. He had dreamed of being a singer but lost his singing voice in a car accident, and was often cruel and abusive.

In the movie, Evelyn wins a large freezer, ice buckets, a washing machine, a trip to New York, sleds, boots, a pony, a palm tree, a window, a sports car, a shopping spree in her local grocery store, ice crushers, a camera, dance shoes, a boat motor, pogo sticks, a case of dog food, and a life time supply of bird seed. Kelly, who feels like his role as provider for the family is being threatened, criticizes Evelyn and sometimes damages the prizes she wins. Their children side with her. At one point, Kelly gets angry at his wife and knocks her over with about 12 full glass bottles of milk, causing her to nearly sever a ligament. Evelyn is able to talk him down after each incident and, temporarily at least, he treats her better.

Evelyn is largely isolated because of the hours she has to spend caring for the children and the lack of local intellectual equals. However, she is contacted by a group of other contest-entering mid-western housewives and befriends them.

Ultimately, Evelyn discovers that Kelly had secretly taken out a second mortgage on their house and never made payments on it, leaving the family subject to an almost-certain foreclosure. The children pray for their mother's miraculous victory in a contest sponsored by Dr Pepper. She wins and pays the mortgage on the house.

In the closing sequence, set years later, we learn that after Kelly died, Evelyn finds out that he has placed his pension checks in a bank account especially for her. The actual Ryan children are then shown as adults, including the actual Betsy Ryan and Terry "Tuff" Ryan, the author of the book.

Plot
Zita, portrayed by Katina Paxinou, is a Parisian widow who has suffered a stroke. She is cared for by her niece Joanna Shimkus, who chafes under the responsibility and wanders off. Shimkus falls in with thieves and lowlifes, finally ending up in jail. She is bailed out by her family doctor (Paul Crauchet), but soon she's back in her old seedy nightclub haunts. While making love to jazz musician Jose Maria Flotats, Shimkus begins reminiscing about her childhood with her aunt. Somewhat chastened, a more mature Shimkus returns home to resume her duties--but by this time, Aunt Zita has died. The film's sympathies are squarely with the niece, whose "escape" from her aunt is meant to represent her final break from childish dependency. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Pumpkinhead - Soundtrack (By Richard Stone) (1988)

slika

Pumpkinhead is a 1988 supernatural horror film, combining elements of fable, fairy tale, and morality. It was the directorial debut of noted special-effects artist Stan Winston. The film has become quite popular with horror fans and is thought to be a classic of the genre.
Plot
A man is being chased by the legendary monster Pumpkinhead (Tom Woodruff Jr.).

The man runs to a cabin and pounds on the door, begging to be let in. The man inside of the cabin, worried for his wife and son who are also inside, refuses to let him in, telling him he cannot risk his family by opening the door. The son goes to the window and witnesses Pumpkinhead killing the man.

Flash forward to the present day -- that young boy in the cabin who saw Pumpkinhead that night is now a grown man. His name is Ed Harley (Lance Henriksen) and he lives a quiet country life with his young son Billy (Matthew Hurley).

Together they run a small grocery store on the side of a country highway. They don't have much but they do have each other, which keeps them happy.

Ed's world is changed forever when a group of teenagers come into town with a truck full of dirt bikes. They begin riding their bikes around in the fields surrounding the store. Ed, worried for Billy's safety, tells Billy to take his dog and come in the store.

Ed has to run up to the house to pick something up, and tells Billy and the dog to stay in the store. Billy does so, until his dog runs outside with the ball, and Billy chases him out to the field where the teens are riding around.

Joel (John D'Aquino), the leader of the teens, accidentally hits and kills Billy with his dirt bike. One teen, Steve (Joel Hoffman), stays while the others leave, some fleeing and some going for help.

Joel was drinking and is on probation -- if the police find out what he did, regardless of the fact that it was an accident, he'll be sent to prison. He's not about to let this happen, so he forces the rest of his friends to stay at the cabin they've fled to.

Ed returns to find Billy and Steve. Billy has died. Steve tries to explain that it was an accident, but Ed only gives him the look of death as Ed carries Billy away.

He takes the body of his son and brings it to the cabin of wise old witch Haggis (Madeleine Taylor Holmes) up in the mountains. Ed seeks the magic of Haggis to bring Billy back. But when she tells him Billy's death is irrevocable, his grief develops into an all-consuming desire for revenge.

Ed strikes a bargain with Haggis to raise Pumpkinhead and have it avenge Billy's death. Pumpkinhead does indeed rise up, and he begins killing the teens one by one.

Ed starts to have visions of Pumpkinhead murdering each teen, and starts believing that what he's done is wrong. He goes to the witch telling her to stop it, stop Pumpkinhead before all the teens are dead. She doesn't, so Ed decides to try and stop Pumpkinhead, who wants to continue picking off the teens one by one until they're all gone.

Meanwhile the remaining teens must fend for themselves and try to escape Pumpkinhead. When Ed finally shows up, Pumpkinhead has other plans for him, which spell almost certain doom for the remaining teens. Are they truly doomed, or can they discover the secret to Pumpkinhead's existance and send him back to hell? The secret of course is that the person who called Pumpkinhead into action becomes the next Pumpkin. The last scene is of Haggis burying Ed as a dried up version of the monster, only to be the next Pumpkinhead that is called into action to kill.

Robot Carnival - Soundtrack (By Joe Hisaishi) (1987)

slika

Robot Carnival is a Japanese anime anthology film released in 1987. It is a collection of nine shorts by several different directors, featuring little or no dialogue. The film appears to define "robots" as anything mechanical that is capable of movement.

One notable aspect of the film is that most of the segments are directed by people best known as character designers or animators who have directed little or nothing after Robot Carnival.
Segments
The shorts come in a variety of styles. Only two shorts ("Presence" and "A Tale of Two Robots") contain dialogue.

Opening: Directed by Atsuko Fukushima and Katsuhiro Otomo. The opening takes place in a desert. A boy finds a small "coming soon" poster advertising the Robot Carnival, and becomes frightened and agitated. He warns the people in his village, most likely to escape, when a huge machine with many robots performing in niches on its exterior grinds its way right over the village. Once a magnificent traveling showcase, it is now a decayed, rusted, malfunctioning, engine of destruction.

Franken's Gears: Directed by Koji Morimoto. A crazy scientist tries to give life to his robot with lightning, just like Frankenstein. When it comes to life, the robot copies everything the scientist does. Overjoyed, the scientist dances with glee, trips, and falls. Seeing this, the robot dances, trips, and falls on the scientist, killing him.

Deprive: Directed by Hidetoshi Omori. This segment features a humanoid robot in the form of 8 Man and an invasion from space.

Presence: Directed by Yasuomi Umetsu. This segment (featuring dialogue) tells the story of a man who has an obsession with a robot girl he has been secretly constructing in an attempt to compensate for the lack of any close relationship with his wife and family. The setting seems to be British and of the early twentieth century, but also suggests another planet or a future which has attempted to re-establish a former social structure. When the robot takes on a personality of her own, far beyond what the man had programmed, he smashes her in a fit of panic, and leaves his secret laboratory for what he believes is the last time. Twenty years later, the man has a vision of his robot appearing before him, but then blowing up before he can take her hand. He returns to his shed to find the robot still sitting smashed in a corner, just as she had been left years earlier. Another twenty years elapse, and the robot appears again before the man. This time, he takes her hand and walks into the distance with her, before vanishing in front of his shocked wife. This is the first short that contains intelligible dialogue (characters in Opening speak in gibberish), but little of it is actually spoken on-screen - all but a few lines are given in voice-over, or with the speaker's mouth obscured.

Star Light Angel: Directed by Hiroyuki Kitazume. A shōjo story, featuring teenage girls at a robot themed amusement park who are friends. One of the girls finds that her lover (who looks suspiciously like Char Aznable) is now going out with her friend. Running away in tears she finds her way to a virtual-reality ride. Pleasant at first, her grief and sorrow cause the ride to create a robotic version of how she saw her former lover -- a monster. But one of the park's 'robots' finds himself in the role of knight in shining armor, and allowing her to let go of her darker emotions, and to move forward in her life. While at first confusing, this is deceptive, as many of the elements are logical in hindsight. The visual style of this segment was heavily influenced by the classic music video for A-Ha's "Take on Me."[1] This short is also notable for the numerous background cameo appearances put in by characters from anime that Kitazume had previously worked on as well as fellow Robot Carnival contributor Katsuhiro Otomo's Tetsuo Shima & Akira.

Cloud: Directed by Mao Lamdo. This simple and simply drawn tale features a robot (reminiscent of Astro Boy), walking through the segment without rest, who travels through the years as various events pass by until he is noticed by a passing angel who makes him human. The segment includes images such as a mushroom cloud and a rocket lifting off that recall major 20th century historical events.

A Tale of Two Robots -- Chapter 3: Foreign Invasion: Directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo. This is set in the nineteenth century and features two "giant robots" directed from within by a human crew. In the style of a movie serial of the sound era, a Westerner in his giant robot attempts to take over Japan, but is stopped by some kids operating a "machine made for the parade" -- a Japanese giant robot. The style of this segment is somewhat reminiscent of a Japanese World War II-era propaganda film. Despite the title of this segment, there is no known prequel or sequel. The voice acting of this piece are a mix of English and Japanese with the Westerner speaking English and the Japanese speaking their language.

Nightmare (a.k.a. Chicken Man and Red Neck in Tokyo): Directed by Takashi Nakamura. The city of Tokyo is overrun by its machines, as they all come alive for a night of revelry, with only a single, drunken human (Chicken Man) awake to witness it.

This segment was inspired by the "Night on Bald Mountain" segment of Fantasia and is also said to be influenced by the Legend of Sleepy Hollow segment from Disney's The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
This features the recent Japanese myth that machines can grow by connecting onto other machines, regardless of the purposes for which they were designed (as seen in Roujin Z).
The "Chicken Man" character is considered by some to be a caricature of famous anime director Rintaro.
Ending: Directed by Atsuko Fukushima and Katsuhiro Otomo. The Robot Carnival is stopped by a little hill in the desert. Unable to climb the sandy obstruction, the Carnival stalls at its base. As the sun sets over the traveling relic, flashback stills recall the grandeur of the Carnival at the peak of its existence -- an unparalleled engine of mirth that brought timeless joy to the various cities it visited. At sunrise, we see the platform chug forward with a sudden burst of power and crest over the dune in its way. The final push proved to be too much for the aged contraption, and it finally goes to pieces in the desert. The bulk of the film's credits are then shown concluding with an epilogue.

Epilogue: Centuries later a man discovers an orb among the remains and brings it back to his family. It is a music box featuring a miniature robot ballerina. As it dances, the children applaud. The ballerina finishes its dance with a leap into the air and explodes, blowing up the shack where the family lived, leaving "END" in enormous letters lying it its place as the only survivor, the family's pet yak, struggles to regain its footing.

The Contender - TV-Series Soundtrack (By Hans Zimmer) (2005)

slika

The Contender is a reality television series that follows a group of boxers as they compete with one another in an elimination-style competition, while their lives and relationships with each other and their families are depicted. Produced by Mark Burnett, the show is hosted by Sugar Ray Leonard, who shared hosting duties in the first season with actor Sylvester Stallone. Leonard also serves as a trainer on the show, along with Tommy Gallagher. During the first season, boxing manager Jackie Kallen also served as counsel to the boxers.

The show ran for fifteen weeks through 2005 on NBC in the United States of America. The show ran in the UK on ITV2 and was repeated later in the week on ITV1, and now airs on ITV4. It also aired on AXN in India, and on the Spanish language network Telemundo. The second season, featuring welterweight contenders, premiered in the U.S. on Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at 10PM ET/PT, on ESPN.

The series’ tagline is “The Next Great Human Drama”, and its soundtrack was scored by Hans Zimmer. Before the show premiered, rival US television Fox network rushed to air a competing show The Next Great Champ, hosted by Oscar de la Hoya. The show performed very poorly, with the final episodes being relegated to cable FSN. In an effort to distance itself from the Fox disaster, NBC opted to hold airing its show until spring 2005. Both series came about after the success of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV.

The show takes the format of a gameshow, with the boxers divided into two teams based on their place of residence in the United States: East Coast or West Coast (or simply “East” and “West”). These teams live together in group living quarters, in Pasadena, California in the historic Royal Laundry Building on Raymond Avenue, and compete for the right to choose which of their team members fights that week, and who he fights against. Most of the second half of the hour-long episodes are devoted to that fight: the loser is eliminated.

On February 14, 2005, one of the 16 contestants, Najai Turpin, despondent over personal matters, committed suicide, shooting himself while sitting with his girlfriend in a parked car outside the West Philadelphia gym where he trained. In his memory, the producers set up a trust fund for his daughter Anyae. The show still aired in its entirety, but with a special tribute to Turpin.

On May 16, 2005, the series was cancelled. The first season cost NBC $2,000,000 per episode. Reruns were seen on CNBC. On August 11, 2005, ESPN announced that it was picking up the rights to a second season of the show, which began airing on the network in July 2006, although special editions under the Contender title are currently airing as of March, 2006. ESPN also announced that it has options to renew the series for two additional seasons. However, on April 10, 2008, ESPN announced that it was canceling the series. Executive producer Jeff Wald maintained that the show would continue on another network.[1] It was later announced the show would move to Versus.

X-Men 3-The Last Stand - Soundtrack (Complete) (By John Powell) (2006)

X-Men: The Last Stand is a 2006 superhero film and the third in the X-Men series. It is directed by Brett Ratner, who took over when Bryan Singer dropped out to direct Superman Returns. The movie revolves around a "mutant cure" that causes serious repercussions among mutants and humans, and on the mysterious resurrection of Jean Grey, who appeared to have died in X2. The film is loosely based on two X-Men comic book story arcs: writer Chris Claremont's and artist John Byrne's "Dark Phoenix Saga" in The Uncanny X-Men and writer Joss Whedon's and artist John Cassaday's six-issue "Gifted" arc in Astonishing X-Men.

The film was released May 26, 2006 in the United States and Canada. Despite mixed reviews from critics and fans, the film did well at the box office. Its opening-day gross of $45.5 million is the fourth-highest on record while its opening weekend gross of $103 million is the fifth highest ever.
Plot
A pharmaceutical company called Worthington Labs announces that it has developed an inoculation to permanently suppress the X-gene that gives mutants their powers, offering the so-called "cure" to any mutant who wants it; the cure is derived from a mutant boy named Jimmy. While some mutants are interested in the cure, including the X-Men's Rogue, many others are horrified by the announcement. In response to the news, the X-Men's adversary Magneto begins to raise an army, warning his followers that, like his experiences in the Holocaust, the cure will be forcefully used to exterminate the mutant race.

Cyclops, still heartbroken about the loss of Jean Grey, returns to Alkali Lake, where Jean sacrificed herself to save the X-Men. He hears her voice and begs for it to stop, finally taking off his sunglasses and his lazers shoot through the water. Jean then appears out of the water to Cyclops, and as the two kiss, Jean changes and appears to kill Cyclops. Sensing trouble, Professor Charles Xavier sends Wolverine and Storm to investigate. When they arrive, the two X-Men encounter telekinetically floating rocks, Cyclops' glasses, and an unconscious Jean. Meanwhile Magneto ambushes a military transport and frees Juggernaut, Mystique and Multiple Man, during which Mystique blocks a shot of the mutant cure aimed at Magneto, only to be left behind because she is not "one of them" anymore.

Xavier explains to Wolverine that the majority of Jean's power is seated in her unconscious mind and that, as a result, her powers are largely fueled by instinct, and not under her complete control. In fact, when Jean was a little girl she was so powerful that he had to put telepathic blocks on her mind to help keep her powers under control. Her bottled up powers manifested themselves as an id-like alternate personality called the "Phoenix" — a purely instinctual creature, ruled only by its own violent desires. Wolverine is disgusted to learn that Xavier has kept Jean in check telepathically, but when Jean awakens, he realizes she is not the Jean Grey he knew. Wolverine asks about Cyclops, but she cannot remember and fears she killed him. Jean pleads with Wolverine to kill her before she harms anybody else, but when he refuses and offers to have Xavier help her, the Phoenix resurfaces and telekinetically slams Wolverine into a wall. She then flees to her childhood home, with Xavier, Wolverine and Storm in pursuit. Magneto, also aware that Jean's powers are loose, meets Xavier at Jean's house. The two men plead for Jean's loyalty until the Phoenix resurfaces, unleashing her devastating power. Furious at being caged within Jean's subconscious for twenty years, she destroys her family's house and engages in a psychic battle with Xavier. She eventually overpowers and disintegrates Xavier then leaves with Magneto, temporarily weakened.
Following the losses of Xavier and Cyclops, and pained by her inability to get physically close to her boyfriend, Rogue decides to take the mutant cure. The X-Men regroup and confront Magneto's army, which is attacking the pharmaceutical company's laboratory on Alcatraz Island. The battle begins when Magneto moves the Golden Gate Bridge to land at Alcatraz Island, which is being guarded only by a company of soldiers. The Brotherhood's first charge is ineffective as Magneto is unable to destroy the soldiers' plastic weapons. The first group of mutants, which Magneto refers to as "pawns", are hit with the cure cartridges and depowered. His minion, Arclight, destroys the weapons with her shockwave, as the X-Men arrive: Magneto derides them as traitors and orders his army to attack as the X-Men come to the aid of the soldiers. During the battle, Kitty Pryde leaves to save Jimmy, narrowly defeating Juggernaut, and at the end of the battle, Iceman goes one-on-one with Pyro, where he transforms his entire body into ice, freezing Pyro's hands, and ends up defeating him. Wolverine distracts Magneto while Beast injects him with the cure, nullifying his mutant powers. After this, Wolverine nearly coaxes Jean back to sanity; however, soldiers arrive and fire upon Jean. The Phoenix quickly resurfaces and, in her rage, begins to disintegrate everything and everyone around her, vaporizing the soldiers and the buildings on Alcatraz. While the other X-Men, soldiers and the remnants of Magneto's army flee to safety, Wolverine fights his way to Jean, relying upon his healing abilities to save him from her destructive power. When he reaches her, the Phoenix coldly snarls at Wolverine being willing to die for the others, to which he retorts he would only die for her. Momentarily gaining control, Jean begs Wolverine to save her. Telling Jean he loves her, Wolverine reluctantly kills her with his claws.

Despite the X-Men's losses, life goes on. The school will continue, even without Xavier, with Storm now in control. Rogue returns and tells Iceman she had to take the "cure." The two reconcile and continue their relationship, now able to touch each other. Magneto, now an ordinary man, sits at a chessboard in a park and reaches out toward a metal chess piece that trembles slightly — indicating that the cure might not be as permanent as originally thought. Following the closing credits, Dr. Moira MacTaggert checks on a comatose patient who greets her with Xavier's voice, implying that he has transferred his mind into this new body.

While She Was Out - Soundtrack (By Paul Haslinger) (2008)

slika

While She Was Out, is a 2008 horror-thriller film starring Kim Basinger and Lukas Haas. Basinger plays a suburban housewife who is forced to fend for herself when she becomes stranded in a desolate forest with four murderous thugs. It was written and directed by film producer Susan Montford based on a short story by Edward Bryant. The budget of the film was purposely low as it was shot in real time and documentary style.[citation needed] The film was produced by Mary Aloe and Don Murphy. Its executive producers included Guillermo del Toro and Basinger.
Plot
On Christmas Eve, suburban housewife Della Myers (Kim Basinger) gets into an argument with her abusive husband Kenneth (Craig Sheffer). After putting her two children to bed, she drives to the mall to buy some last minute wrapping paper. At the mall, she can't find a parking space. Angrily she leaves a written note on the window of a car that is parked so badly that it uses up two parking spaces. By the time she finishes her purchase, the parking lot is nearly deserted and the note is gone from the car. As she enters her own car, the car on which she had left the note pulls up behind her.

She confronts the gang of four young men from the car, led by Chuckie (Lukas Haas), but they make plain that they intend to rape her. A security guard intervenes, but is shot by Chuckie in the ensuing standoff. As the gang realize that they have committed a murder, Della manages to start her car and she drives away. They follow her, intending to kill the only witness. Her attempts to evade them fail, and she is forced to defend herself using the limited resources at her disposal, including the contents of a small toolbox.

She ends up killing all of them and returns to her home. Della goes upstairs to check on her children and when she comes back down she points the gun toward her abusive husband.

Buddy - Soundtrack (By Elmer Bernstein) (1997)

slika

Buddy is a 1997 film directed by Caroline Thompson. It starred Rene Russo as Mrs. Gertrude 'Trudy' Lintz and Robbie Coltrane as her husband.

The film was based on the life of a gorilla called Massa[1] with elements of Gertrude Lintz's other gorilla Gargantua (who was called "Buddy" at the time). In real life, Massa became the oldest Gorilla on record while Buddy/Gargantua died young as a circus attraction and is now on display in a museum.
Plot
Millionaire animal lover and overall spoiled rich girl Trudy adds the title animal, a gorilla, to her family. The ape, named Buddy, finds life in the city very difficult to deal with. Although Trudy raises him as her own son in her mansion (which also houses a few comical chimpanzees), he becomes hard to control due to his strength. A particularly bad experience in the Chicago World's Fair makes things even harder for Buddy.

Pepe - Soundtrack (1960)

slika

Pepe is a 1960 movie starring Mario "Cantinflas" Moreno in the title role, directed by George Sidney. A multitude of cameo appearances attempted to replicate the success of Mario Moreno's American debut, Around the World in Eighty Days, produced by Mike Todd in 1956.

The film failed to achieve the success of Cantinflas' previous American film and was roundly criticized by film critics. Despite the appeal of seeing the numerous cameos, the film has not been released on home video in the United States.
Plot
Mario "Cantinflas" Moreno is a hired hand, Pepe, employed on a ranch. A boozing Hollywood director buys a white stallion that belongs to Pepe's boss. Pepe, determined to get the horse back (as he considers it his family), decides to take off to Hollywood. There he meets stars like Jimmy Durante, Frank Sinatra, Zsa Zsa Gabór, Bing Crosby, Maurice Chevalier and Jack Lemmon in drag as Daphne from Some Like It Hot. He is also surprised by things that were new in America at the time, such as automatic swinging doors. When he finally reaches the man who bought the horse, he is led to believe there is no hope of getting it back. However, the last scene shows both him and the stallion back at the ranch with several foals.

Bettoun’s ruthlessness is amply demonstrated when he arranges for a killer to escape from police custody, knowing full well that the killer’s first act will be to eliminate his only serious rival, Carreras. Resentful of Bettoun’s power, one of his associates, Pascal Villars, decides to bring an end to his empire. Frances - Soundtrack (By John Barry) (1982)

Frances is a 1982 Universal drama film starring Jessica Lange, Kim Stanley, Sam Shepard. When it was released this film was advertised as a purportedly true account of actress Frances Farmer's life but the script was largely fictional and sensationalized. The film's tagline is: "Her story is shocking, disturbing, compelling... and true."

Directed by Graeme Clifford, the story was written for the screen by Eric Bergren, Christopher De Vore and Nicholas Kazan (son of Elia Kazan, who worked with the real Frances Farmer in several plays), based upon William Arnold's Shadowland, a fictional biography of Farmer. In pre-production, the producers reneged on their option to use the book as source material. Arnold filed an unsuccessful copyright infringement lawsuit but many of his fictional elements were incorporated into the final film. On the commentary of the latest DVD release, director Clifford stated, "We didn't want to nickel and dime people to death with facts." It was produced by Jonathan Sanger and Mel Brooks.

Frances was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Jessica Lange) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Kim Stanley). The original music score was composed by John Barry.
Plot summary
The movie ostensibly tells the life story of actress Frances Farmer, but major plot elements shown, most notably the dramatic lobotomy scene, never happened. The title role is played by Lange, and her mother is played by Stanley. Shepard played fictional character Harry York, who was developed by the writers after the falling out with Arnold forced dramatic changes in the script.

Born in Seattle, Washington, Frances Elena Farmer is a rebel from the word go, winning a high school essay award by writing about God's death. Determining to become an actress, Frances is equally determined not to play the Hollywood game: she refuses to acquiesce to idiotic publicity stunts, and insists upon appearing on screen without makeup. Her defiance attracts the attention of Broadway playwright Clifford Odets, who convinces Frances that her future rests with the Group Theatre.

But once she leaves Hollywood for New York City, Frances learns to her chagrin that the Group Theatre intends to exploit her movie fame in order to draw in customers. Her desperate attempts to restart her movie career, combined with her increasing dependence on alcohol and the pressures brought to bear by her monster mother, result in a complete mental breakdown. Even while institutionalized, Frances is abused by the powers-that-be; she is forced to undergo a brain operation, is treated like a mad animal, and periodically raped by the male orderlies and visiting soldiers.

Frances is released in the custody of her mother, who persists in browbeating her tortured daughter until Frances discovers the legal means to break away. The film comes to a climax when Frances is feted by the smarmy network program This Is Your Life; she spent her last years as host of a local TV program in Indianapolis, Indiana, dying of cancer on August 1, 1970 at age 56.

Nick Quarry - Soundtrack (By Jerry Goldsmith) (1968)

This is a ten minute bonus in the never before issued music for a short pilot for an unsold series, Nick Quarry (1968). Rather than a full 50 minute pilot, this was basically an action-orientated extended trailer made to promote a show based on the Frank Sinatra detective movie, Tony Rome (1967). The show was rejected for being too violent for the times, while the music Goldsmith composed was very much of the time. This is ten minutes of cool, swinging detective/spy adventure music, including a 'hip' electric rock section 'Body Art'. It may be formula stuff, and many might even have trouble identifying it as Goldsmith, but that is the point; it is meant to be generic TV 'tec music. No one would have been the poorer had this remained in the vaults forever. It's certainly no lost masterpiece and far from classic Goldsmith, but it is professionally crafted and fun, and is nice to have and hear a couple of times.

Gigli - Soundtrack (Complete) (By John Powell) (2003)

Gigli (pronounced jee-lee) is a film released in 2003 which was written and directed by Martin Brest, starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Lainie Kazan. The film received a lot of hype because Affleck and Lopez, the film's stars, were romantically involved at the time. However, the critical reception of the film was very poor and the film became infamous as one of the worst movies ever made.
Plot
Larry Gigli (Affleck) is a low-ranking mobster who is commanded to kidnap the mentally challenged, Baywatch-obsessed younger brother (Justin Bartha) of a powerful federal prosecutor to save his mobster boss from prison. Gigli successfully convinces the young man, Brian, to go off with him by promising to take him "to the Baywatch." However, Gigli's boss does not trust him; he hires a woman calling herself Ricki (Jennifer Lopez) to take over the job.

Although Gigli is attracted to Ricki, he resents the fact that Louis (Lenny Venito), his boss, does not have faith in him and that he has to take orders from Ricki. He is also frustrated by Brian's insistence on going to "the Baywatch" and by Ricki's lesbianism. The events take a darker turn when Larry and Ricki receive orders to cut off Brian's thumb, something neither of them wants to do.

Ricki's girlfriend shows up at Gigli's apartment, accusing her of cheating. She slits a wrist and has to be rushed to the hospital. While at the hospital, Gigli goes to the morgue and cuts off a corpse's thumb, which he sends to his boss as Brian's thumb. Gigli and Ricki go back to his apartment and Gigli confesses his love, leading to a sexual encounter between them.

Afterwards, they are called to meet with the mob's boss. Starkman (Al Pacino) reveals that he didn't approve of the plan to kidnap a federal prosecutor's brother and scolds them because the thumb they sent won't match Brian's fingerprint. He shoots Gigli's superior Louis dead. Starkman is about to kill Ricki and Gigli as well, but Ricki talks him out of it. They decide to take Brian back to where they found him. On the way, they discover Baywatch shooting an episode on the beach and leave a happy Brian there.

Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes - Soundtrack (1972)

Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes - Soundtrack (By Tom Scott) (1972)

slika

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), directed by J. Lee Thompson, is the fourth film of the Planet of the Apes series. It explores mankind's future history, as established in Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), and is the most violent sequel in the series. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is the rise of the ape civilization en route to their dominating planet Earth.
Plot summary
Building upon the description given by Cornelius and Zira before the Presidential Committee in the previous film, Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), a disease killed the world's cats and dogs, leaving humans with no pet animals. To replace them, humans began keeping monkeys and apes as household pets. In time, humans noticed the apes' capacity to learn and adapt; thus they taught them to perform menial household tasks. Moreover, by 1991, the United States of America has become oppressive and fascist in culture, of uniformed classes and castes, based upon ape slave labour.

Armando (Ricardo Montalbán) and Caesar, a young chimpanzee horseback rider in Armando's circus, visit a large city to distribute flyers advertising the circus' arrival to town. Armando warns the chimpanzee to be careful in the city; should anyone learn his identity as the child of Cornelius and Zira, it would mean their deaths. Walking the streets, they see apes cleaning streets, delivering packages, et cetera, and are shocked by what is done to disobedient apes. Seeing an ape being beaten and drugged, Caesar shouts: Lousy human bastards!; quickly, Armando takes responsibility for the exclamation, explaining to the policemen, who were beating the other ape, that it was he who shouted, not his chimpanzee; the surrounding crowd become agitated with disbelief, Caesar runs away; Armando follows.

Hiding in a stairway, Armando says he will go to the authorities and settle the matter, by bluffing. Meantime, Caesar must hide among his own kind (in a cage of orangutans from Borneo), and soon finds himself being trained for slavery through violent conditioning; he then is sold at auction to Governor Breck. Gov. Breck names the ape by allowing him to name himself from a Bible handed to him; the chimpanzee's finger rests upon the name Caesar. So christened, Caesar is then put to work by Gov. Breck's chief aide, Mr. MacDonald (descended from African-American slaves), who sympathizes with the apes to the thinly veiled disgust of his boss, Gov. Breck.

Meanwhile, Armando is being interrogated by Inspector Kolp, who suspects his "circus ape" is the child of the two civilized apes from the future. Kolp's assistant puts Armando under an authenticator machine that psychologically forces people to be truthful. Rather than confessing, Armando commits suicide by jumping through a window. Learning of the death of his human pater familias, the only human he loved, Caesar loses faith in human kindness and begins plotting simian rebellion.

Secretly, Caesar teaches the combat arts to the other apes, mostly gorillas and chimpanzees (orangutans are not seen fighting) and bids them gather weapons such as knives, guns, and blowtorches. Yet, Gov. Breck learns from Inspector Kolp that the manifest of the vessel that delivered Caesar lists no chimpanzees. Suspecting Caesar is the ape the police are hunting, Breck's men arrest Caesar and electrically torture him until he speaks, thus betraying his identity. Hearing the confession, Breck orders Caesar's immediate death; Caesar survives his execution; MacDonald, feigning over-sensitivity to torture, reduces the electrical power of the machine; Caesar pretends to have been electrocuted. Once Gov. Breck leaves, convinced he has eliminated the simian threat to mankind, Caesar kills the torturer who electrocuted him, and proceeds to rebel against Gov. Breck and Ape Management. Previously, MacDonald had learned that Caesar is the articulate ape whom humans thought mythical.

Caesar leads an ape revolt against Ape Management. The apes are victorious after killing most of the riot police sent to kill them. After burning into Gov. Breck's command post and killing most of the personnel, Caesar has Breck marched out to be executed. MacDonald appeals to Caesar's humanity to show mercy to his former persecutor. Caesar ignores him, and in a rage declares: "Where there is fire, there is smoke. And in that smoke, from this day forward, my people will crouch, and conspire, and plot, and plan for the inevitable day of Man's downfall - the day when he finally and self-destructively turns his weapons against his own kind. The day of the writing in the sky, when your cities lie buried under radioactive rubble! When the sea is a dead sea, and the land is a wasteland out of which I will lead my people from their captivity! And we will build our own cities, in which there will be no place for humans except to serve our ends! And we shall found our own armies, our own religion, our own dynasty! And that day is upon you NOW!"

However, as the apes raise their rifles to beat Breck to death, Lisa, later Caesar's wife, voices her objection: "N— N— N— No... "; other than Caesar, she is the first ape to speak. Caesar reconsiders and orders the apes to lower their weapons saying: "But now... now we will put away our hatred. Now we will put down our weapons. We have passed through the night of the fires, and those who were our masters are now our servants. And we, who are not human, can afford to be humane. Destiny is the will of God, and if it is man’s destiny to be dominated, it is God’s will that he be dominated with compassion, and understanding. So, cast out your vengeance. Tonight, we have seen the birth of the Planet of the Apes!"

Dracula Rising - Soundtrack (By Ed Tomney) (1993)

This Roger Corman production was undoubtedly conceived to capitalize on the success of Francis Ford Coppola's romantic vampire epic Bram Stoker's Dracula, though the Count himself is not actually a character. The story involves LA artist Theresa (Stacey Travis), who has fallen under the sensual spell of darkly handsome Vlad (Christopher Atkins). Since their first enigmatic meeting, she has been troubled by sexually tinged nightmares involving the mysterious stranger, and she cannot shake the idea that they have met before. Later, while on assignment in Eastern Europe restoring a macabre, Gothic monastery named "The Church of Lost Souls," Theresa encounters Vlad again -- incurring the ire of her Mephistophelean employer Alec (Doug Wert) and leading Theresa to believe that there is also a strange bond between the two men. As her dreams and visions become more disturbing and detailed, she discovers that they are intimations of a former life in which Vlad and Alec were bitter rivals for her affection -- a love which led to her death. With the aid of Vlad's vampire father, the pair became vampires themselves in order to while away the centuries before her soul could return -- which leads to the inevitable climactic confrontation between the two powerful foes in modern times. Deftly lit and photographed, with some effectively surreal dream sequences, this modest production succeeds thanks to a character-based screenplay that never lapses into the usual Cormanesque exploitation formula. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

Godzilla is a 1998 American action film based on the Godzilla franchise. It was co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich and stars Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Maria Pitillo, Hank Azaria, Michael Lerner and Kevin Dunn. The film follows an American scientist who discovers and tries to stop a giant irradiated monster making its way to New York City.
Plot
The film's opening credits play over a montage of French nuclear tests in French Polynesia, observed by several different species of lizard. An egg is irradiated by the tests.

Years later, a Japanese fishing ship is attacked by an unseen, giant monster that attacks from below the water: only one sailor survives. Traumatized, he is questioned in a hospital by a French scientist (Jean Reno) as to what he saw. His only reply is "Gojira", which is later Romanized as "Godzilla".

Another attack near the Eastern Seaboard culminates in the eventual destruction of a fleet of fishing ships. The crew survive, after witnessing their boat sinking, but it shoots up from underneath and lands with a huge splash in the surface.

Dr. Nick Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick), an NRC scientist, located in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (Ukraine) researching the effects of radiation on wildlife, is interrupted by the arrival of an agent of the U.S. State Department. He is sent to Panama, escorted by the military, to observe the wreckage of the recovered Japanese fishing ship (which had three gigantic claw marks on one side) and a set of massive dinosaur-like footprints in the grassy soil. The Frenchman is also there, observing the scene and introduces himself as an insurance agent. Aboard a military aircraft, Tatopolous identifies skin samples he recovered as belonging to an animal "unknown to science". He dismisses the military's theory that the creature is a reawakened dinosaur, theorising that its origins in French Polynesia make it a mutant created by nuclear testing.

Godzilla then travels to Manhattan and creates havoc in the city, killing dozens of people. Godzilla is revealed to be a gigantic, bipedal lizard that towers over much of the New York skyline. The city is evacuated and the military attempt to kill Godzilla, first luring it out with a huge pile of fish (the creature's staple diet). It takes the bait, but is scared off by small arms fire and retaliates by breathing strong gusts of wind at its enemies.

It is chased by three AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, who destroy the top of the Chrysler Building and fails to kill the monster. After this battle, Nick collects a blood sample, whence he learns that Godzilla reproduces asexually and is collecting food for its offspring. Nick is determined to find its nest.

A videotape from Panama is stolen by Nick's ex-girlfriend, Audrey Timmonds (Maria Pitillo), a would-be TV journalist for news channel "WIDF", and broadcast by her superior. The military is outraged by the broadcasting of the classified tape and Nick is thrown off the team. Nick is then kidnapped by the French scientist, who introduces himself as Philippe Roaché, an agent of the DGSE, the French Secret Service. He and his team have been keeping close watch on events, and now mean to confront Godzilla.

The military lures out Godzilla again, trying to trap it in the open ground of Central Park, but fail when it flees from a premature fire. The creature dives into the waters of the Hudson River, where it is attacked by three U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. Two submarines fire torpedoes at Godzilla, but hit their compatriot Anchorage instead. The other submarines fire again; Godzilla is shot and sinks to the bottom of the sea. The military celebrate their seeming victory.

Nick and a French team led by Roaché, surreptitiously followed by Audrey and cameraman Victor "Animal" Palotti (Hank Azaria), track through the subway tunnels to Madison Square Garden, finding hundreds of man-sized eggs. While the team plants explosives, the eggs begin to hatch and the baby Godzillas begin to feed on the fish left to them. When they run out, they begin hunting and eating the team. During the commotion Animal and Audrey find their way into the Garden. After failing to contain the babies and losing several members of the team, Nick, Phillipe, Animal, and Audrey take refuge in a TV broadcast booth. Believing that the babies will eventually force humanity into extinction if they escape, Nick, Audrey, and Animal alert the authorities, who order an immediate strike by a trio of F/A-18 Hornets. The four escape just before the building is destroyed, and the babies are burned to death.

Seconds later, the adult Godzilla (who managed to survive the assault in the river) emerges from the wreckage. The four protagonists escape in a taxicab and alert the military to Godzilla's survival. They then lure Godzilla to the Brooklyn Bridge, where it becomes helplessly trapped in the steel suspension cables and is an easy target for the returning fighter planes. Godzilla is then hit mercilessly by twelve missiles, whereupon it falls to the ground and slowly dies.

The crowd and the military celebrates Godzilla's demise. As Nick, Audrey, and Animal reconcile, Roaché quietly leaves, taking the videotape Animal had recorded, detailing the entire incident. In the smoking ruins of Madison Square Garden, it is revealed a single egg has survived the bombing. As the film concludes, the egg begins to crack. An infant Godzilla hatches from the egg and roars.

The Notebook - Soundtrack (Complete) (By Aaron Zigman) (2004)

The Notebook is a 2004 romance film directed by Nick Cassavetes, based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as Noah and Allie, a young couple who fall in love during the early 1940s. Their story is narrated from the present day by an elderly man played by James Garner, telling the tale to a fellow patient, played by Gena Rowlands.
Synopsis
In a modern-day nursing home, an elderly man named Duke (James Garner) begins to read a love story from his notebook to a female fellow patient (Gena Rowlands).

The story begins in 1940. At a carnival in Seabrook Island, South Carolina, local country boy Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) sees seventeen-year-old heiress Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) for the first time and is immediately smitten. She continuously refuses his persistent advances until their well-meaning friends lure them together; they then get to know each other on a midnight walk through empty Seabrook.

Noah and Allie spend an idyllic summer together. One night, a week before Allie is to leave town, she and Noah go up to an abandoned house called The Windsor Plantation. Noah tells her that he hopes to buy the house, and Allie makes him promise that the house will be white, with blue shutters, a walk-around porch, and a room that overlooks the creek so she can paint. They intend to make love for the first time, but are interrupted by Noah's friend Fin (Kevin Connolly) with the news that Allie's parents have the police out looking for her. When Allie returns home, her disapproving mother bans her from seeing Noah again. Allie fights with Noah outside and the two decide to break up. Allie immediately regrets the decision but Noah drives away. The next morning, Allie's mother reveals that they are going home that morning. Allie frantically tries to find Noah, but is forced to leave without saying good-bye. Noah, devastated by his separation from Allie, writes her one letter a day for a year, only to get no reply as Allie's mother keeps the letters from her. Noah and Allie have no choice but to move on with their lives. Allie continues to attend Sarah Lawrence College, while Noah and Fin enlist to fight in World War II. Fin is killed in battle.

Allie becomes a nurse for wounded soldiers. There, she meets the wealthy Lon Hammond, Jr. (James Marsden), a well-connected young lawyer who is handsome, sophisticated, charming and comes from old Southern money. The two eventually become engaged, to the joy of Allie's parents, although Allie sees Noah's face when Lon asks her to marry him.

When Noah returns home, he discovers his father has sold their home so that Noah can go ahead and buy The Windsor Plantation. While visiting Charleston to file some paper work, Noah witnesses Allie and Lon kissing at a restaurant, causing Noah to go a little crazy, convincing himself that if he fixes up the house, Allie will come back to him.

While trying on her wedding dress in the 1940s, Allie is startled to read about Noah completing the house in the style section of a Raleigh newspaper and faints. She visits Noah in Seabrook and he invites her to dinner, during which Allie tells Noah about her engagement. Noah questions whether Allie's future husband is a good man and she reassures Noah that he is. Later in the evening, Noah invites Allie to come back the next day.

In the present, it is made clear that the elderly woman is Allie — suffering from dementia, which has stolen her memories — and Duke is her husband. Allie does not recognize their grown children and grandchildren, who beg Duke to come home with them. He insists on staying with Allie.

The next morning, Allie and Noah go rowing on a nearby lake and begin to reminisce about their summer together. As a rain storm starts Noah rows to shore, where Allie demands to know why Noah never wrote to her. After the revelation that Noah had indeed written to Allie, they share a passionate kiss, before making love into the night.

The next day, Allie’s mother appears on Noah’s doorstep, telling Allie that Lon has followed her to Seabrook after Allie's father told him about Noah. Her mother takes Allie out for a drive to show her that there had been a time in her life when she could relate to Allie's present situation. On returning to Noah's, she hands her daughter the bundle of 365 letters that Noah had written to her. When alone, Noah asks Allie what she is going to do; Allie is confused and confesses that she doesn’t know. Noah asks her to just stay with him, admitting it is going to be really hard, but he is willing to go through anything because he wants to be with her. Confused as ever, Allie drives off.

Allie drives to the hotel and confesses to Lon, who is angry but admits that he still loves her. He tells her that he does not want to convince his fiancée that she should be with him, but Allie tells him he does not have to, because she already knows she should be with him.

The film goes back to the elderly couple, and Duke asks his fellow patient who Allie chose. She soon realizes the answer herself; young Allie appears at Noah's doorstep, having left Lon at the hotel and chosen Noah. They embrace in reunion.

Duke's elderly companion suddenly realizes that she herself is Allie. She remembers her past. She and Noah/Duke joyfully spend a brief intimate moment together; after originally finding out about her impending illness, she had herself written their story in the notebook with the instructions for Noah to "Read this to me, and I'll come back to you." But soon Allie relapses, losing her memories of Noah yet again. She panics, and has to be sedated by the attending physician. This proves to be too difficult for Noah to watch and he breaks down. The next morning, Noah is found unconscious in bed and he is rushed to the hospital; he later returns to the nursing home's intensive care ward. He goes to Allie's room later that night, and Allie remembers again. The next morning, a nurse finds them in bed together, having both died peacefully holding each other's hands. The last scene shows a flock of birds flying away.
