Psapp - The Camel's Back (10/2008)

Psapp are a rare band, odd in lots of ways. They manage to keep the electronica cognoscenti amused with their intricate production and the pop crowd happy with their irresistible hooks. Their previous album Tiger, My Friend was a classic in its genre and firmly established them as a band to watch.
It seems things took a rather dark turn after that for the duo (Carim Classman and Galia Durant), and this their third album was the first to be made in the spotlight with the weight of expectation hanging over proceedings.
They should not have worried though, The Camel’s Back is an absolute triumph. The quirks and stylistic touches remain, but they are delivered with new confidence and maturity.
There is a sense that all the difficulties that surrounded the album's gestation has resulted in the duo stepping outside of their comfort zone and pushing their sounds and ideas further than ever before.
Part Like Waves is a good example of this fresh approach, where the Psapp of old would have delivered the song over rickety beats and cheap keyboards now there is added orchestration and layers and layers of vocal harmonies that swoop and soar.
That’s not to say that the band have lost their intimacy. Title track The Camel’s Back is a beautiful lo-fi lament, and Screws is a tingle-inducing piano ballad.
And forthcoming single The Monster Song (November 3) is the sort of song which can change the course of a band's career, being closest the duo have come to a straight-up pop hit.
Psapp have always existed in a world of their own, but their third album has made this world more accessible, appealing and fun than ever before.

Jessica Lea Mayfield - With Blasphemy So Heartfelt (2008)

With a voice so aching it’s almost unbearable in its confluence of beauty and suffering, Jessica Lea Mayfield is dropping her debut album with no small amount of buzz—all of it justified—and two ringing, high profile endorsements from Scott Avett of the Avett Brothers and the Black Keys’ shaggier half, Dan Auerbach, who produced the album and appears throughout. And damn if it isn’t a knockout; she’s all of 18 (though hardly a rookie, having logged time in family-related bands for a decade already), sports a nose ring, and with every slow-burning meditation on desire and commensurate heartache, you crave the deep, angst-ridden soul in her voice that much more.

As her career develops, it’d be good to hear a bit more variety. Taken as one, straight-through listen, With Blasphemy, So Heartfelt becomes a haze of tortured, restless phrasing shot through with metallic, slurred guitar tones occasionally just shy of psychedelia. Plus, none of the frequent comparisons she’s received already seem particularly accurate; she’d eat that pissy Cat Power alive, for one, and while the frayed garage-blues of the Black Keys is a useful touch point, Mayfield’s not really a bash-things-out kinda gal, and her music isn’t merely Dan and Patrick feminized (a suggestion that’d be not only over-simplification but, yeah, a disservice to both her and the Akron howlers). No, Mayfield’s got her own knives to twist, most of all “We’ve Never Lied”, which begins in resignation ("Kiss me like you love me / I’ll pretend we’ve never lied") but is actually a pronouncement soaked in acid ("And I kiss you like I want you to kiss me / And I’ll talk to whoever I goddam wanna"). Cat Power? That old softy? Please.

After debuting on Speak n Spell Records in 2006 with the bristling Shaky Hands EP, Cut Off Your Hands quickly set stages and airwaves on fire across Australia and beyond. And with steady attention to touring and the production of melodic, musical gems their avid fan base and the cavalcade of media hyperbole has only continues to grow.

With their nationwide billing on 2007’s Laneway Festival and jaunts to Los Angeles, SXSW and New York really getting the ball rolling, it was, tellingly, the band’s first visit to London that would prove their watershed moment.

Having been bewitched by the bank in Texas, the lovesick indie-maven Steve Lamacq (hosting John Peel’s old show on BBC6) wasted no time in pulling them into his Maida Vale studios for a live performance when he knew they were in town. All of a sudden the boys from the antipodes were a bright pin punched on the British musical ‘map’, and as a consequence, their remaining shows were rammed full of hungry industry folk looking for a piece of the pie.


It was also while in London that the group, through various channels and the snowballing momentum, found themselves working with ex-Suede guitarist and Producer de jour, Bernard Butler, for the first time. Their second EP, Blue on Blue, being the fruit of their labors. While the recording’s lead tracks, ‘Still Fond’ and ‘Oh Girl’, settled quickly into the higher echelon of the radio charts at home, things continued to move for the band abroad. For the release of their debut English 7” – the double a-side Still Found/Closed Eyes – through hip vinyl-ists Fandango was followed almost overnight by the inking of a deal with 679 Recordings (home to The Streets, Mystery Jets and Death From Above 1979).

Through the heady rush or record deals, single released and the imminent debut LP however, the group’s dedication to their first love, the live arena, never waned. Incessantly in the van, Cut Off Your Hands forged solid friendships with fans and bands alike through UK tours with the whip-smart Foals, the legendary Edwyn Collins and Florida’s Black Kids – not the mention shows with The Duke Spirit and Les Savy Fav. All this while also treading the festival circuit, playing eight shows in just three days at last years CMJ festival in New York being winging their way to Iceland’s epic Airwaves festival and a return to Australia to play Falls Festival and the full Australasian tour of Big Day Out – alongside Bjork, Dizee Rascal and LCD Soundsystem.

Now based in the dynamic environs of Hackney, London, the band have finished juggling life on the road with life in the studio, having put the final coat on their debut LP ‘You and I’, with Butler once again at the helm. With such an amazing album waiting in the wings, Cut Off Your Hands couldn’t be set in a better position to win over the World’s hearts.

Independent artist Ingrid Michaelson's 2008 release Be Ok, a benefit album that will include previously unreleased songs, demos, covers and live recordings in addition to the title track (produced by Stacy Jones and Bill Lefler - Ronnie Day, Meg & Dia, Plain White T's). A portion of the proceeds will go to Stand Up To Cancer, an organization created to urgently move cancer research forward with the help of the public. She embarks on a national headlining "Be Ok" tour in late October 2008 and she designed a "Be Ok" necklace to be sold at all tour stops and online, donating all proceeds to SU2C. Her new song "Be Ok" and its video are part of the SU2C campaign.

After taking forever to complete, Joey Cape's solo album is wrapped up.

The Lagwagon front man's acoustic solo album, Bridge is finally in the can. Cape had been sporadically working on the album while juggling other projects, and was forced to re-record large portions after his un-backed-up hard drive crashed. His foot dragging was also due to thinking too hard about the finished product and second-guessing himself.

"It is my first attempt at making a solo record, something I am totally unfamiliar with. I know this, I will never make a record this way again," he wrote on his MySpace blog. "From now on, no second guessing or obsessing. Ultimately, I am proud of this record. I made something I like and it's time to move on. I hope most of you will appreciate it."

Lucinda Williams - Little Honey (10/2008)

The first thing Lucinda Williams announces on her ninth studio album is that she found the love she was looking for standing behind an electric guitar. Twelve songs later, she signs off with a bit of wisdom from the late Australian philosopher Bon Scott: “It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll.” The message? After chilling (and bumming) out on last year’s mortality-fixated West, which she said was inspired by the electronic blues of Thievery Corporation and Kruder & Dorfmeister, Williams goes back to the roots-rock well and takes a long, satisfying swig. The result is her finest record since Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, the decade-old masterpiece by which her career will always be judged.

Little Honey is a retrenchment, but it isn’t narrowly focused: “Real Love” and “Honey Bee” are rowdy bar-band rave-ups; “Knowing” and “Rarity” have gorgeous vintage-soul horn arrangements; “Well Well Well” jumps with electric bluegrass rhythms. Over the scrappy juke-joint groove of “Jailhouse Tears,” Williams trades soured lover’s accusations with Elvis Costello. What unites the songs is the restored hope in Williams’ singing, whether she’s describing her engagement to Little Honey coproducer Tom Overby in “Tears of Joy” or the purity of an unnamed musician’s talent in “Rarity.” Amid all this emotional renewal, even the closing AC/DC cover sounds pretty profound.

Hello Friends
I have some good news - on October 10th I will be releasing an album of all new material, called "The Jasmine Flower".
I played around a lot over the last 2 years with different sounds and ideas, but in the end I decided I wanted to make my most stark record to date, so I recorded the songs just me and my guitar. Afterwards we added a string quartet to a few tracks.
I have a home studio here in Bermuda, but when I was ready to put down the tracks, the whole thing started breaking down - first the mixing desk then the computer itself died. I was very "in the zone" to record and didn't want to wait what could be weeks for all new gear to arrive, so I decided it was a lesson in simplicity- I realized I could still record and mix the album on my solar powered laptop. So there you have it - that's all you need to make a great sounding album. Sun and songs.
I think the songs must be good, because most of them make me feel pretty uncomfortable, which is a sign that I have plumbed the depths and dug for truth, no matter how unsettling

Ava Leigh - Turned-On Underground (10/2008)

Authentic, schmauthentic. This Chester-born Brit-reggae starlet may be a self-styled "hippie from the countryside", but she's recorded her debut album with veteran World's Best Rhythm Section, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, as well as Future Cut, the duo behind Lily Allen's Smile. White, schmite. She's got serious credentials: Turned-On Underground, said debut LP, was partly produced at Harry J's in Kingston, Jamaica, and she shares an A&R team with Jamiroquai (OK, fairly serious credentials). That said, her impressive, octave-straddling warble and slickly produced reggae-lite have more in common with the precocious pyrotechnics of Joss Stone and the high-register pseudo-soul of America's R&B goddesses than they do the stark, desolate early-80s Lovers Rock of Carroll Thompson or Jean Adebambo (first single La La La could be Fergie or Pussycat Dolls). But it's to the latter genre that she nails her colours most firmly. She even does a version of Louisa Marks' lexically challenged Lovers classic Caught You In A Lie, as well as Matumbi's After Tonight with reggae bad bwoy Finley Quaye.

Leigh, born Hayley Carline 21 years ago, got turned onto Jamaican roots, ska and dub by her mum, but it was a visit to last year's Notting Hill Carnival that turned her pretty blonde head, although her voice has been earning plaudits since she was a kid, when she toured with her school choir as well as a local swing jazz band. She won a talent contest in Spain during a family holiday, shrieking a tune by UK girl group Eternal. Her manager, co-owner of the IG nightclub in South London, introduced her to the quaking riddims of the Abu Shanti Sound System. Soon, she'd recorded Rollin', with its "stoned, two in the morning feeling when you're at an all-night party, hanging with your friends". From her repertoire of easygoing skank, Breathe is eco-conscious, while Same Old Thing gets bitchy about routine. Then there's the teen-luv bounce of Mad About the Boy. But don't be fooled by the sweet vocals and gentle lilt of her music: Leigh calls Who Told You and La La La her "angry love songs". A photogenic wannabe Pop Idol she is not. "Everyone's always shocked, and wonders - how come a Chester girl sings reggae?" says Leigh, who, on nights off, raves to old skool techno at illegal warehouse parties in Wales. "I know I don't look like a person who would sing reggae - until you hear it!"

Roland Tchakounté - Waka (2008)

Roland Tchakounté is living proof that Blues knows no boundaries.

Born in Cameroon, far away from the cotton fields that sculpted his elders’ style, he starts his musical training through percussion then the guitar, followed by the piano and harmonica. His first steps on stage, as a bass player and singer, take place within local Cameroonian band specialised in Afro-American songs’ cover (James Brown, Wilson Picket, Jimi Hendricks, etc.).

He gets hooked on Blues when listening to John Lee Hooker’s Crawling Kingsnake and will have only one dream from now on : become a Bluesman. He succeeds in creating a perfect fusion between his African roots, his Blues influences and his particularity to sing his complete repertoire in Bamiléké, his native dialect. In December 1999, « Bred Bouh Shuha Blues » is released and brings him fame.
« Abango », an acoustic duo masterpiece, follows in 2005 and offers him and his partner, Mick Ravassat, the opportunity to tour the United States (Chicago, Memphis), Canada (Montreal, Mont Tremblant) and Belgium.
In 2006, he meets the drummer and percussionist Mathias Bernheim, and conquered by his playing, both very simple and out of the ordinary, instantly makes him the third member of the band.

« WAKA », his new album, is released in February 2008 and corresponds to a sold-out concert at the New Morning, in Paris (France). Then, he visits once again every corners of the world and will be on stage in Belgium, Canada, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Lithuania, Croatia, but also in Africa (Burkina Faso, Mali) and in France (Cognac, Vaison-la-Romaine, etc.).

Roland Tchakounté sees his music as a « wild melody », allowing him to address a rainbow of feelings, sad or joyful, but also express the neglected state where the African continent lies.
He obviously looks up to such artists as Sun House, Robert Johnson, Edmore James, Muddy Waters, but regards John Lee Hooker and Ali Farka Touré as his real masters.

A self-proclaimed Utopian, his fundamental desire is to make the human race a one and great family, without distinctions of race or colour.

Katie Herzig - Apple Tree (2008)

I was extremely pleased when I learned that Nashville based songwriter, Katie Herzig had a new album on the horizon a couple of months ago. Her previous releases, 2004’s Watch Them Fall and 2006’s Weightless, are beauties to behold and I anticipated that her latest, Apple Tree, would be of the same vein. And I was right.

From start to finish, Apple Tree firmly stands as something Herzig should be proud of, as it’s quite possibly her best album to date. She’s managed to blend her honey-sweet voice and superb songwriting skills to make an album bountiful with both playful energy and heartfelt, lyrically rich songs.

The album opens with ‘Songbird,’ a swaying, bittersweet ode to missed love in which Herzig sings, “She lays her head upon your shoulder / But all I see is the way that you hold her / You live in your house with a beautiful view / And I live in your apple tree.”

One will find pure, satisfying pop in ‘Hologram,’ which serves as one of Herzig’s loudest songs to date. But she delivers it flawlessly, giving the song an indescribable energy that needs to be listened to multiple times. But on ‘How The West Was Won,’ Herzig still mesmerizes, turning a softly brushed love song into delicate foot-tapper.

Herzig also teams up again with fellow songwriter, Kim Richey, penning together two of the songs that appear on Apple Tree. One of which is ‘I Will Follow,’ an infectious standout that will most certainly find itself on the radio or on television.

‘Forevermore’ closes the album with a jaunty, head-bopping sing-a-long about fairy tales and white knights, but don’t that mislead you. By the chorus you’re hooked and you’ll be humming it all day long.

I suppose that my only gripe is that at just under forty minutes, the album seems too short. But that’s hardly a valid complaint when met with an album chock-full of so many quality songs. That said, Apple Tree is red delicious.

Chatham County Line - IV (2008)

The finger-busting "Clear Blue Sky" banjo tune and the stately mandolin instrumental "Paige" prove that these North Carolinians aren’t ready to sacrifice their bluegrass roots. Yet Chatham County Line’s IV is a pop album built around close harmony singing with arrangements that owe as much to the ‘Stones as to the Stanley Brothers. It’s often pop with an edge. "Birmingham Jail" recounts that city’s Civil Rights travails. "I Got Worry" is a thumping blues number. Rachael Yamagata [born September 23rd 1974 in Arlington, Virginia] is an American singer-songwriter. She plays piano and has a dark, raspy alto voice. A child of divorced parents, Yamagata divided her time growing up between her sansei Japanese American father, a Washington, D.C. based attorney and Harvard graduate, and her Italian-German, Jewish mother, an artist-painter in New York City. Yamagata became the vocalist for the Chicago funk-fusion band Bumpus, spending six years writing and recording three albums with the band and touring the country. In 2001, after having written a number of songs that didn't fit with the funk style of the band, Yamagata decided to take the songs and launch a solo career.

Happenstance was the first full-length album by Rachael Yamagata. It was released on BMG on June 8th 2004 in the US, and May 16th 2005 in the UK. There is a combustible quality about newcomer Rachael Yamagata that for a lot of listeners will call to mind Fiona Apple. A first spin of Happenstance can make you itch with the thrill of discovery, but it also leaves behind the impression that its singer is vaguely dangerous; which is exactly what makes these songs so absorbing. 'Everybody's talking how I can't be your love', she pouts in a melodically engineered stutter on opener 'Be Be Your Love', one of several tracks pairing her with a piano that seems to take the brunt of the punishment for her wrecked relationships. The rest of the disc unravels with similar heat. When she growls in her full-time rasp that "[You've] worn me down-like a road-I did everything you told" on the very infectious indie-rock leaning 'Worn Me Down', you believe her. But the less stormy numbers work as well, with '1963' coming off as flower-power pop grounded by a voice that knows better and 'I Want You' wending its way through a fat, heartsick wallow to emerge someplace burnt in honesty. A late minute-long instrumental feels more tasteful than pretentious, adding to a monster of a debut already fueling hopes that happenstance, the term, not the album, will play a miniscule part in Yamagata's eventual output.

The Lucksmiths are back with their beguiling new album First Frost: fourteen songs of town vs country contemplation, amongst other things… like, for instance, where lost mittens go… or finding enlightenment with a snorkel and mask. And fifteen years in, the band’s characteristic breezy pop has broadened in scope; First Frost heralds the band’s brave first steps into new sonic realms, from gently caressed fingerpicked folk to fuzzy dreampop.

The band this time around followed the wisdom behind many of the songs here, ditching their hometown of Melbourne for the country, and heading way south to the rugged foothills of Tasmania’s Mt Wellington. Working with ace producer Chris Townend in his falling-down shack, The Lucksmiths played music and cooked soup, keeping warm by the wood-fired stove as snow fell outside and Bear the aging German shepherd scratched and yawned. Throughout, Tali’s hushed vocals (delivered thusly so as to not trouble the bush mice playing canasta in the ceiling) are unmistakably warm and right at home amongst Marty and Louis’ guitar interplay and Mark’s bubbly basslines. This is the sound of The Lucksmiths doing what they do best, and then a little more just for good measure!

Ryan Adams and The Cardinals - Cardinology (10/2008)

Shake off those infinity blues, boys and girls: Ryan Adams and the Cardinals are set to unleash Cardinology this Oct. 28.
The record, to be released on Lost Highway, features a (supposedly) "concise and focused collection of twelve unadorned gems." No need to dust out the cobwebs, though, the tracklist features a bevy of new tunes even for those who obsessively followed the now defunct Foggy or the (hopefully temporarily) re-directed Cardinal Cave.

The first single on deck, "Fix It," will be released tomorrow, and another track, "Stop," will be a featured song on the Sept. 30 episode of A&E's The Cleaner. Ramping up to the release, the Cardinals will continue on a long line of tour dates and then celebrate the record's drop with a appearance on The Late Show on Oct. 29.

Finally, in other Cardinal news, as previously reported, Adams' first collection of non-musical writing will be released next March. It can be pre-ordered from the Akashic books website starting Oct. 6.

Adrian Crowley - Long Distance Swimmer (2008)

Cross traditional Irish alt folk with US folk miserabilists such as Smog and the result is this minimal, pared-down, fragile slice of singer-songwriting that no iPod should be without. It may be a style of music that's ten-a-penny these days, but that only makes artists such as Adrian Crowley, who stand out from the crowd, all the more impressive.

Opening track Bless Our Tiny Hearts is bleak and beautiful, as is the third offering, Star Of The Harbour, both recalling the archetypal forlorn troubadour strumming a lonely guitar on a sea wall as the storm clouds gather. In between, These Icy Waters adds more instruments to the mix to brighten things up a bit.

The songs slip from solo acoustic to more layered offerings with aid where appropriate from musicians including Marja Tuhkanen on violin, the ever-worthwhile James Yorkston on additional vocals, clarinet, concertina and guitar, Sinead Nic Gearailt on harp, Katie Ellis on cello and Thomas Haugh on drums.

Crowley's helpers never intrude, nor take over completely, simply boosting songs such as Walk On Part to a level above just another offering from a dead-pan bloke with a battered guitar. Here in particular the ability of the additional instruments to echo the cruel waves of a cold sea make the song rather than break it on the underlying rocks. The slow, foreboding strings of Electric Eels also deserve a mention.

Crowley's real talent shines through on songs such as Temporary Residence (probably the album's best) and Victoria, which manage to sound sparse and full at the same time while the most rounded songs, such as Harmony Row, sound more sinister than upbeat. The music is cold and bleak, perfect for its midwinter release date. Imagine Nick Cave hosting a wine and cheese New Year's Eve party in a particularly bleak cove on the Irish coast as the ghost of Nick Drake looks on, an image continued through the instrumental Theft By Starlight's sonorous piano.

As the album progresses, Leaving The Party is almost cheery by comparison, a song you can at least imagine slow waltzing to, and yet it's also one of the ones that owes the biggest debt to the darker US alt-folkies, morphing into one of the album's saddest laments before Crowley's done. Penultimate track Brother At Sea on the other hand is, genuinely, more upbeat.

This is Crowley's fourth studio album, following on from 2004's A Northern Country, 2005's A Strange Kind, and When You Are Here You Are Family. His music hasn't changed direction after the relatively long lay-off, but he's certainly come back no weaker. Think Smog, think Bonnie Prince Billy, think The Decemberists if they didn't have a sense of humour or, closer to home, Irish troubadours such as Declan O'Rourke.

And then to round it all off, there's the final, beautiful, fragile, delicate title track. Perfectly balanced, with crashing chords beating in time to the waves against the shore, it would be greedy to ask for a better beginning to the musical treasures 2008 might wash up for us.
