Son Volt - American Central Dust (07/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/225886485/SVACT_Vic.zip

Son Volt returns with ‘American Central Dust,’ out July 7 on Rounder Records, a plaintive 12-song collection that recalls the melodic succinctness of the band’s debut album ‘Trace.’ After the musical experimentation of 2007’s ‘The Search, ’ ‘American Central Dust,’ the band’s first album on Rounder, refines the band’s robust sound. Fiddle, pedal steel, lap steel and sparkling piano add an atmospheric nuance to Son Volt’s Americana inspired rock, surrounding band leader Jay Farrar’s stream of consciousness lyrical imagery.

Album highlights include; the rootsy shuffle of album opener “Dynamite,” on which Farrar declares “this love is like celebrating the 4th of July with dynamite,” the tremolo soaked rocker “Down To The Wire,’ the gorgeous, piano led “Cocaine And Ashes,” an empathetic tribute to Keith Richards, references a man who’s “the same as everyone, just kind of lucky,” and ‘Sweetheart of the Rodeo’-esque rocker “No Turning Back.”

When asked about signing to the new label, Farrar said "Rounder has shown a long term commitment to music forms, like folk and blues, that I have a lot of respect for. Going with Rounder has been a kind of a full circle continuum -- the first Rounder person I met with was instrumental in booking Uncle Tupelo gigs years ago"

Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle (2009)

mp3 320kpbs | 104MB | 48:17 min. | Released: April 14, 2009.
After almost 20 years of using the alias Smog for his music, Bill Callahan switched to his given name for his releases after 2005's A River Ain't Too Much to Love. For 2009's Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle, Callahan returned to the more intimate, acoustic-based sound of latter-era Smog albums, featuring string and brass arrangements by Brian Beattie.

Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle is a record of grand hopes and epic imagery, and powerful, uplifting music--the most accomplished of his 20-year career. <Mojo>

Eagle is the ultimate cohesion of Callahan’s singular storytelling and bewitching delivery. <Paste Magazine>

His vantage from Eagle is one of textured ambivalence; his images split and shimmer like double-exposures, immediately releasing an obvious meaning quickly followed by a subtler one that equivocates the first. <Pitchfork>

Ben Harper and Relentless7 - White Lies For Dark Times (04/2009)

...American singer/songwriter Ben Harper says his upcoming album with new group the Relentless 7 is “my first second record”. Due out on Tuesday 5 May, White Lies For Dark Times is the “Shimmer And Shine” singer’s tenth longplayer, but his first with the new band, a trio of Texan musicians. A distinctly rocking disc, the group already appeared on one song (“Serve Your Soul”) on Harper’s 2006 double album Both Sides of the Gun, the experience so positive it encouraged 39-year-old Harper to continue playing with the group.

“I’ve always been rock, let’s not kid ourselves,” he says, admitting that the Relentless7 are “kicking my ass up and down.” “Playing with four people is almost like playing solo acoustic,” he says. “There’s nowhere to hide. There’s no place to retreat, musically and creatively.

You have to be full-force and you have to be thinking on your feet. It demands that you manoeuvre with reckless abandon, but at the same time you have to be paying attention. One false move and it could be...jarring.”.

Georgia's Horse - The Mammoth Sessions (05/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/226201683/GHTMS_Vic.zip

Texas is a graveyard and The Lone Star State is full of ghosts. Out on the road to Old El Paso lies the Rattlesnake Bomber Base near a town called Peyote. Once the home of fleets of B29 bombers and the plane called Enola Gay as well as many thousands of military personnel, it now stands empty. The only tenants are lizards and snakes. Even the rusted and rotted hulks of planes have been carted off by junk men and souvenir hunters. The roar of the war effort has been replaced by the whisper of the wind. A gentle absence of action. This is just one of several thousand abandoned settlements or ghost towns in the West Texan desert but the haunted Americana of georgia’s Horse sounds like it could have come from any of them.

Their debut album ‘The Mammoth Sessions’ is redolent of sun-baked vacant lots, cracked runways, drifting tumble weed and dull orange rust. This collection of songs all sound like the aftermath of some emotionally violent event that has just left stillness and melancholia in its place. There are echoes of the (ex pat) Americana of The New Pornographers, a light dusting of the folk psychedelia of Smog and the torrid and threatening country death songs of PJ Harvey’s ‘To Bring You My Love’.

These 13 songs are anchored round the skewed and magnetic vision of singer/songwriter Teresa Maldonado and their brittle and skeletal songs are fleshed out by multi-instrumentalist Tiziano Hernandez (bass/guitars), Brad Thomason (drums) and Melly Rose (cello). But that’s not to say that this recording sounds like it was handled by some kind of your mother’s your brother, lives in a barn hillman. One of many stand out tracks, ‘Snake & Sparrow’, creaks and echoes as if recorded in a haunted house, on haunted equipment. And the title track briefly effloresces violently as if the ghost of the Enola Gay were bringing its terrible cargo home, before returning to gentleness once more. From the most basic of set ups, a deeply affecting and subtle beauty is achieved.

Apostle of Hustle - Eats Darkness (05/2009)

Apostle Of Hustle's third album, Eats Darkness, will hit stores on May 19 through Arts & Crafts.

Frontman and Broken Social Scene member Andrew Whiteman describes the follow-up to 2007's National Anthem Of Nowhere as being about struggles and conflict. You can hear "Perfect Fit" here.

"Eats Darkness is a serial poem about the struggles people go through," Whiteman says. "Battles, from the macro to the micro.

"Songs about tactics and attitudes needed in 'life during wartime.' Each track is like a tapas at the banquet of conflict. A small contribution to the articulation of a fucked and beautiful world."

Whiteman formed Apostle Of Hustle, who also include bassist Julian Brown and drummer Dean Stone, in 2001. Their Folkloric Feel debut album came out three years later and was followed by National Anthem Of Nowhere three years after that.

Jill Sobule - California Years (04/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/225952004/JSCY_Vic.zip

This past year, Jill Sobule was in the news more for a song she didn’t write than for any of the songs she has written. Katy Perry’s pop hit “I Kissed a Girl” shared a title (but little else) with Sobule’s 1995 quirk-pop landmark, and Sobule spent much of the year fielding questions about the song that ranged from the well-meaning to the misinformed. The “I Kissed a Girl” hoopla obscured another, more interesting story, which was that Sobule, who had been dropped from two labels and saw two others fold while she was under contract, became one of the first artists to deal creatively with the collapse of the traditional music business.

Her new album, “California Years” (Pinko Records), is one of the first releases to be funded by listener anticipation. Sobule set up a Web site and asked her fans to contribute to her upcoming project. The funding was tiered: a ten-dollar donation bought a digital download of the album; a hundred-dollar donation brought a hard copy of the CD, a “Junior Executive Producer” T-shirt, and a mention in the liner notes; a five-hundred-dollar donation earned mention in a song. There was even a ten-thousand-dollar level that would let a fan sing on the record. This pay-to-have-her-play scheme could have been nothing more than a quixotic footnote, but Sobule easily surpassed her goal of seventy-five thousand dollars and made her record, complete with production by Don Was.

Of course, there is a difference between gimmickry and artistry. To her credit, Sobule has fashioned a record very much in keeping with her past work, a loosely autobiographical folk-pop set that reflects on her recent relocation to California after decades in New York. “Mexican Pharmacy” is full of local color and musical humor—it leans toward bossa nova more than toward norteño—while “Palm Springs” and “San Francisco” offer more intimate views. Sobule has also included a number of songs about her travails in the industry, ranging in tone from angry (“Nothing to Prove”) to whimsical (“The Donor Song,” which names Sobule’s five-hundred-dollar donors, including “someone named Kiwi”). The brisk, wistful “Where Is Bobbie Gentry?” speculates on the fate of the late-sixties star, even borrowing the melody of “Ode to Billie Joe”—implicit in the tribute is the fact that, unlike Sobule, she is no longer making records.

Slaid Cleaves - Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away (04/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/226250545/SCEYLWBTA_Vic.zip

Slaid Cleaves. Grew up in Maine. Lives in Texas. Writes songs. Makes Records. Travels around. Tries to be good.

Granted, there’s a whole lot of history and detail that could be shoehorned into that most minimal of bios to flesh out Cleaves' story. But all that’s really called for, from time to time, is a footnote or two to bring folks up to speed on his latest batch of literate, sepia-toned Americana songcraft. This year’s bounty comes baring the foreboding title of Everything You Love Will be Taken Away, but fans of the Austin-based singer-songwriter needn’t fear: Everything you love about the man’s singular voice and music is still very much intact.

It’s been five years since Cleaves’ last album of self-penned songs, 2004’s acclaimed Wishbones, which fans had waited nearly as long for in the afterglow of his 2000 breakthrough, Broke Down. But Cleaves’ slow-and-steady-wins-the-race pace has always yielded albums full of uncommonly fine-tuned songs built to stand the test of time, and Everything You Love . . . is par for his course.

Take the lead-off track, for example. “I think of that song as sort of a breakthrough,” he says of “Cry,” which jumps out as not only one of the most emotionally trenchant songs of his career, but also arguably one of his catchiest. “It showcases a shift in focus that I've taken with my songwriting. It's a bit more internal, personal. I actually recorded that song four separate times, because from the start it felt like something new and special, and I wasn't quite sure how to present it. But I always felt like this one could go all the way if I did it right. I thought it had the bones of a thoroughbred.”

One line in “Cry” lends the album its title and establishes a theme that runs throughout the record. “Whether it’s your loved ones, your way of life, or even just your sense of innocence and hope, every song in some way is about how it all gets taken away," says Cleaves.

To put the new record together, Cleaves teamed again with co-writing buddies like Rod Picott and Adam Carroll, as well as famed roots-rock producer Gurf Morlix. Additional tracks were cut with long-time road-guitarist Charles Arthur in Virginia, and Austin singer-songwriter and producer Billy Harvey was called in help find that elusive, perfect take on “Cry.”

Everything You Love . . . marks Cleaves’ debut on the newly launched co-op label Music Road Records, the brainchild of fellow Austin songwriter Jimmy LaFave. “I’m in on all the decisions,” says Cleaves. “It feels good to have so much more control over my fate now. I figured, I cut my own hair, I fix my own car — so why shouldn’t I be the one responsible for getting this work of mine out into the world?”

Only time will tell how this new journey pans out; check back again in, oh, hopefully sometime before another five years have gone by. But in the meantime, there’s plenty to savor right here and now in the digital grooves of Everything You Love Will be Taken Away. Hold onto it for dear life, and savor every minute of it.

Christy Moore - Listen (04/2009)

Kod: Označi sve

One of the marvels of the much-loved Irish singer is his ability to find overlooked songs and make them his own. Most of the 13 here are from fellow countrymen, including the mesmerising title track that captures the Arctic stillness, and "Gortatagort", a paean to Eire roots. The tone throughout is gentle and earnest, Moore's purring brogue only occasionally breaking into jollity, his "Ballad of Ruby Walsh" a case in point. The star turn is an acoustic version of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" that turns Pink Floyd's epic 1975 lament for their fallen leader, Syd Barrett, into a piece of gentle, compassionate mourning. Remarkable.

Jesse Winchester - Love Filling Station (04/2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/227156166/JWLFS_Vic.zip

You could stock a crowd-pleasing jukebox with the songs Jesse Winchester has written and recorded in the last four decades - and with the better-known versions of his songs that have become hits and album staples for artists ranging from Joan Baez to Elvis Costello to Jimmy Buffett. Winchester's skill in capturing vivid small town vignettes, heartfelt love and love-lost situations, and goodtime celebrations has yielded a litany of I-know-that-songs: "Yankee Lady," "Biloxi," "Brand New Tennessee Waltz," "Talk Memphis," "Rhumba Girl," "Payday," "I'm Gonna Miss You, Girl," "Let's Make a Baby King" and many more. His 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composters, Artists and Publishers (ASCAP) is one gauge of the music world's esteem; Bob Dylan naming Jesse as one of the best songwriters of his generation is another.

Love Filling Station, Winchester's Appleseed debut and his first studio CD in a decade, offers nine characteristically top-flight originals among its dozen songs. It also highlights Jesse as a graceful, soulful vocalist, as memorable a singer as a songwriter. His light southern tenor drawl, warmly wrapped in country/bluegrass/folk arrangements, can gently ascend to the heavens a la Roy Orbison, as in the lovestruck wonderment of "O What a Thrill" (already covered by The Mavericks), dish some sly, wry dirt ("It's a Shame About Him") and even capture the sublime hush of Ben E. King's classic "Stand By Me," one of the CD's three covers. The lightly rocking "Wear Me Out," another original, mixes a mock-plaintive vocal of sexual exhaustion with a funky, gospel-tinged call-and-response as the great bluegrass solo artist and sideman Jerry Douglas threads carnal lap steel guitar licks throughout the song.

Aside from Douglas's guest shot, some of the core musicians on Love Filling Station are the equally estimable Russ Barenberg (guitar, mandolin); Mark Fain (bass) and Andy Leftwich (fiddle) from Ricky Scaggs' band; Jesse himself (guitar, keyboards, lead and backing vocals); and solo artist Claire Lynch, who summons her inner Dolly Parton on "Loose Talk," an uptempo country lament about wagging tongues and provincial minds.

The strength, sincerity and humor of Winchester's songs combine the laidback gentility of his Memphis upbringing with the perspective and longing of his longtime Canadian exile, self-imposed in 1967 upon receipt of his draft notice. Repatriated in Virginia with an American-born wife since 2002, Winchester sounds happy to be home on Love Filling Station, and we're glad to have him back.

Neither Sara nor Rebecka are hardcore fans of Steely Dan, and perhaps that helped them break away from the polished Steely Dan sound and go for simple piano and vocals arrangements.

They wanted the songs, the music and the lyrics to take centre stage and - in the process - perhaps help people discover the beauty in the compositions.

And it works. What we get is 12 tracks that add another dimension to the songs for a Steely Dan fan like myself, and hopefully open up a few pairs of ears previously shut to the talents of Fagen & Becker as well as Isaksson & Törnqvist.

Bob Log lll - My Shit Is Perfect (2009)

MY SHIT smells of past Doo Rag brilliance, finding Log showcasing his truly mystifying slide guitar virtuosity, unusual but butt-shaking poly-rhythmic beatitude and, as loved and expected, his demented take on humanity. How does he do all of the amazing things he does? It is truly mystifying…even to him.

**The album cover concept: COLORFORMS. The cover will come as a blank stage with stick-ons of Log (cut up into appendages and trunk) with usual pals by his side: inflatable raft, other party accessories…enabling the owner to create and recreate their own cover!

Playing behind a motorcycle helmet, there have been questions to Bob Log III’s true identity: is he truly the man that fronted Doo Rag in the early nineties? Is he Andy Kaufman? Or thrill seeker (and still living apparently) Evil Kineval? All valid questions, and questions that Log Promises to address on tour and after the new album is released.

Release Date: May 19, 2009 | mp3 VBR V0 | 75MB | 42:22 min.
After 15 years at the helm of Grandaddy the Modesto, California quintet whose celebrated five-album run started as a project in Lytle s bedroom and took him around the world Jason Lytle returns with a new collection of songs that are at once a continuation of and elaboration on the musical and lyrical ideas he explored in that band. The title Yours Truly, The Commuter tells it all: songs about the treks we all make, from one state to another, from inner lives to outer, and the tolls those travels take. Musically, the dreamy soundscapes mirror the dramatic environment of Lytle s newly-adopted Montana, where the record was written and recorded, while the twang of central California farmland remains in the inflection and phrasings of the Modesto native s unmistakable voice. Electronic flourishes collide with acoustic guitars and soulful piano parts, recreating Lytle s signature electro-lo-fi atmospheres. I wrote all the songs, I engineered the whole thing, I recorded it, I played all the instruments -- this is what I do, says Lytle, and we are glad he s taking passengers on this journey.

Jenny Owen Youngs - Transmitter Failure (05/2009)

Jenny Owen Youngs is back with her second album, ‘Transmitter Failure’, due May 26th on Nettwerk Records. The album’s lead, ‘Led to the Sea,’ is “the loudest song on the record,” says Youngs, “and it couldn’t be further away from the musical ideas of Batten.”

The disc, produced by Dan Romer, is a bold departure from her 2007 release ‘Batten The Hatches’. “I wanted to make something that would move people emotionally, but also move them physically,” Youngs explained. “I did not want to end up touring for another three years on a record that wouldn’t offer people the opportunity to move. So, Dan and I set out to make something that was, quite simply, more fun to play live. In the process, my writing took turns I didn’t expect.”

With his reintroduction to the pop world behind him, renowned singer-songwriter Yusuf [the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens] is ready to once again strike up an intimate relationship with his audience. The 11-track CD album was co-produced with Martin Terefe [James Morrison, Jason Mraz, Martha Wainwright], and features guest appearances from James Morrison, Michelle Branch and Holly Williams [granddaughter of Hank Williams, Sr.]. 'I was absent from my audience for so long,' says Yusuf 'people thought another album would never come. The 2006 album, 'An Other Cup', was a surprise. With this new album, the distance is much less. I'm back to doing what I do best - painting pictures with music and storytelling on a very human, personal, intuitive level through lyrics and song, so I can help people feel good again. I guess in some ways the new album picks up where the Cat Stevens the public knows left off.'

Allen Toussaint - The Bright Mississippi (2009)

Kod: Označi sve
http://rapidshare.com/files/228260148/AlToBM_Vic.zip

For the first time in his storied career, Toussaint explores the work of his New Orleans forebears on a soulful, live-in-the-studio jazz set, produced by Joe Henry that the Washington Post calls an "exquisite" album, one that reveals his "great flair and imagination as an interpreter and performer." The New York Times says, "Toussaint brings to these songs his own elegant, reserved sensibility." Guests include Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau.
-----
Nonesuch Records releases The Bright Mississippi, Allen Toussaint’s first solo album in more than a decade, on April 21, 2009. Produced by friend and frequent collaborator Joe Henry, the record includes songs by jazz greats such as Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Django Reinhardt, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Billy Strayhorn. Toussaint and Henry created a band of highly regarded musicians for the sessions: clarinetist Don Byron, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, guitarist Marc Ribot, bassist David Piltch, and percussionist Jay Bellerose. Additionally, pianist Brad Mehldau and saxophonist Joshua Redman each join Toussaint for a track.

Growing up and learning to play the piano in New Orleans, Toussaint knew the music that is on The Bright Mississippi well, although his career tended more toward rock and popular music; he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, by his friend and collaborator Robbie Robertson of The Band. This return to the music of his roots was suggested by The Bright Mississippi producer Joe Henry, who had produced Toussaint’s 2006 album with Elvis Costello, The River in Reverse, as well tracks from as I Believe to My Soul, a collection of classic R&B and soul songs, and songs on Nonesuch’s 2005 Gulf Coast benefit album, Our New Orleans.

As Henry explains, “At the close of the day’s Our New Orleans session, Allen sat alone at the piano and played through an arrangement he’d devised of Professor Longhair’s Crescent City standard, ‘Tipitina.’ It sounded like nothing I’d ever heard before and like everything I’d ever heard.” He continues, “In the weeks that followed I worried over this brief piece of music like it was a rosary, and I wasn’t alone in my devotion to it. The principals of Nonesuch Records were thinking what I was: that a door had been nudged open, and behind it lay a room; and in that room there perhaps resided a particularly gifted and heretofore unsuspected executor of the broad musical amalgam born to New Orleans at the dawn of the 20th century.”

While Toussaint has always known material like “West End Blues” and “St. James Infirmary,” he admits that, as a performer, “I hadn’t tackled them on my own. ‘Tackle’ is a bad word—I hadn’t caressed them on my own, except to listen from time to time in passing. Even the gigs that I’ve done during my gigging days, I was playing whatever was on the radio at the time, boogie-ing and woogie-ing and the like. I hadn’t been through this standard bag. I always loved those songs, but I had never been in a setting where that is what I would do for a while. Until now.”

He calls the experience of making The Bright Mississippi “wonderful. Everything is live, of course. This isn’t the kind of assembly line music where somebody put the wheels on here and somebody put the top on there. Everything got done at the same time, so everybody fed on each other, their personality and tonality.”

Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca [2009]

Kod: Označi sve
http://tinyurl.com/d65jy3

Relase Date: June 9, 2009 | mp3 224kpbs | 70MB | 41:11 min.
The Dirty Projectors are the project of Dave Longstreth, a former Yale student who left college to become one of the most prolific and unique indie singer/songwriters of the early 2000s.
His first album, The Graceful Fallen Mango was released under his own name and introduced his distinctive arrangements of both lo-fi and hi-fi production. Longstreth released his first album as "Dirty Projectors" in 2003 entitled The Glad Fact, on the Western Vinyl label. In 2005 he released The Getty Address, a concept album surrounding musician Don Henley; in 2007 he released Rise Above, an album of Black Flag songs as reimagined from memory. In 2007 he also did a Take-Away Show acoustic video session shot by Vincent Moon. In April 2008, Dirty Projectors signed with Domino Records, and the label announced the release of Bitte Orca for June 9, 2009. 2009 also found the band collaborating with David Byrne on the song "Knotty Pine" for the compilation album, Dark Was the Night. On May 8, 2009, members of Dirty Projectors will collaborate with Björk to perform an original composition by Longstreth, written for five voices and acoustic guitar, as part of a charity concert to benefit Housing Works, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter for homeless men, women, and children suffering from AIDS. The concert is to be held at the Housing Works Bookstore & Café in downtown New York City.

Reviewing the version of Bitte Orca which leaked onto the internet two months before its official release date, Stereogum called the album "stunning" and "pay-off for joining Dave Longstreth on his years of recorded self-discovery." Immediately after it was leaked, Bitte Orca was named an "Editor's Pick" by the music blog 20 Watts. Prefix called the album "a breakthrough, which filters their left-field avant aesthetics through more conventional song structures. <Wikipedia>

INFO

Wounded Knee has released two Minerals albums on Benbecula, this is his first full scale release

During 2008 WK's live style mediated toward improvised journeys into vocal realisation with performances reaching an almost primal level "The Sublime Frequencies" is one such example.

However WK covers all bases on this album with a sonic mix of song, spoken word and sound effects drawing influences from as far afield as Gaelic psalm, improv and throat techniques a la Bobby McFerrin and even scat. At the heart, a modern symbiosis of folk and mantra, culminating in an album that is unique, playful and captivating.

REVIEWS

It's beautiful, vast, ancient, slightly silly and funky as fungus [Plan B, main album feature]

... a one-stop shop of beautifully layered mantras, throat noises, songs about bowling and Gaelic flutes flapping about in the wilderness. [Time Out]

Wounded Knee is evocative, at times witty, and on occasion, haunting. [The Skinny]

Entrancing, disorientating, and awesome ... a significant addition to the contemporary Scottish music canon. [The List]

A brave, funny and bizarre triumph. [Alternative Ulster]

Linda Draper - Bridge and Tunnel (2009)

The evolution of singer/songwriter Linda Draper's music continues to thrive with her third Planting Seeds Records release: "Bridge And Tunnel" (PSRCD-059) - produced by Brad Albetta (Martha & Rufus Wainwright, Teddy Thompson). The album showcases 10 fresh new songs further exploring Draper's signature sound - light, enchanting music with gentle, heartfelt honest lyrics. "Limbo" leads off the LP capturing the very essence of morning's first ray of sunlight. It is followed by the stripped down splendor of "Sharks And Royalty". The collection's charm continues to shine bright in the tracks "I Will" and "Pushing Up The Day" - both primed to be sure classics. A trio of tracks - "Time Will Tell", "Broken Eggshell" and "Bridge And Tunnel" unveils Linda's vibrant, melodic pop side. The LP also includes Draper's uniquely unadorned take on The Rolling Stones classic 1966 hit "Mother's Little Helper." Added into the mix are drummer Anders Griffen (Kimya Dawson, Regina Spektor, Jeffrey Lewis), bassist Rob Woodcock (see also Draper's "Keepsake" LP), along with multi instrumentalist/producer Brad Albetta (keyboards, Wurlitzer, bass, and electric guitar). "Bridge And Tunnel" will no doubt have the listener back for repeated plays with its timelessly captivating sound. A tour in support of the LP is in the works for Summer 2009. It's been six years since Jason Molina has bestowed a 7-inch on us and it was well worth the wait. The first three songs of It's Made Me Cry, the first 7-inch under the Magnolia Electric Co moniker, are comprised of compositions conceived, written, recorded and mixed by Jason and company over a series of five days in Bloomington, Indiana as they geared up for tour in October '08. The fourth track was recorded at the same studio about a year prior featuring the late great Evan Farrell, a Protection Spell for his new journey.

The voices and moods are diverse and an exciting glimpse of things to come from Magnolia Electric Co.

Emily Wells - Beautiful Sleepyhead & the Laughing Yaks (2006)

Kod: Označi sve
http://www.sendspace.com/file/n6vg76

“Multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells says she's ‘most influenced by the songs and voices of Nina Simone and Bob Dylan.’ You can hear it in Emily's music. She's a singer-songwriter with unconventional and often chilling vocals.”

- NPR
---
“EMILY WELLS, Beautiful Sleepyhead and the Laughing Yaks: Multi-instrumental singer-songwriter Wells’ resolutely indie music (written, produced, & recorded by Wells in her own studio with bassist Joey Reina and drummer Sam Halterman) should appeal to fans of freak-folk and poetic lyrics that wind outside usual verse-chorus-bridge constructs amidst quirky arrangements of keyboards, xylophone, guitar and violin. Warbling over solo piano, Wells flirts with preciousness on the Joanna Newsom-esque “Supermarket,” but the unvarnished vulnerability of “My Tin Car” is genuinely affecting, as is “View From a Blind Eye”
-Pasadena Weekly-
---
Emily Wells is an artist to watch out for, and Beautiful Sleepyhead and The Laughing Yaks is a very impressive album... Fans of Leonard Cohen, Elliot Smith, Tom Waits, Bright Eyes, Joanna Newsom and others in similar veins will find Wells a pleasurable listen... Her music is a brand of folk that lies somewhere between country and pop. Production touches include sounds of marimba, xylophone, acoustic bass, piano, brush-hit drums and beautiful harmonies... Highly recommended listening for fans of the new folk.

Left Hip Magazine
----
“Like a mix of Nina Simone and Bjork, Wells bled emotion with every word.”
