Midlake - The Courage of Others (2010)

Three years ago, Midlake released The Trials Of Van Occupanther, a sweetly harmonized, intimately rocking sophomore album that took them far away from their native Denton, TX, placing them on big tours and year-end lists and the like. This third album's taken time, by design. As they told Jessica in their Progress Report, "We didn't know exactly what we wanted, but we know we didn't want to make the same album as last time. We could have made 10 albums with the amount of time we've spent, but that doesn't mean they'd be saying anything great." Instead they committed to 40-hour work weeks in order to move away from the last record's "Fleetwood Mac-y America" with a shift toward, at least in part, "British folk scene of late '60s stuff." The set finally has a release date -- 2/2 via Bella Union in the States, and the day before in the UK -- and an official title in The Courage Of Others.

T-Model Ford - The Ladies Man (2010)

T-Model's 80-something years old... his Mississippi Driver's License says he's 84, his US Passport says he's 87, and he says he's 88... so you decide. He started playing guitar based on Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, but T's only got one style: his own. T's illiterate, so no use in talking to him about tuning. They call it "open T" because it's his own unique sound. "The Ladies Man" is T-Model Ford's seventh album, and what makes it unique is that it's entirely acoustic. Recorded at Planet Sound Studios in Wichita, Kansas, the album is the product of a live, one-take afternoon session with no overdubs and minimal mixing. T wanted to play acoustic guitar and have 100% control over the record and everyone involved in the project agreed he should do it the way he wanted. Basia Bulat - Heart Of My Own (2010)

After over a year of touring that took Basia across Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States several times over in support of Oh, My Darling, she said goodbye to the road, took her new songs up in her arms and found a home for them on tape. Recorded with Howard Bilerman at the mighty Hotel2Tango studio in Montreal, Quebec, nearly all the songs on Heart of My Own were written while on the road: traveling between cities, crossing the Canadian prairies, searching for a place to stop in the Nevada desert, trailing through the Smoky Mountains, standing in the bright dusk of a summer night in the Yukon. Perhaps most surprising was the strong influence her short time in the Yukon had on this album. Basia spent five days and nights in Dawson City, where for the first time she experienced true silence. “I felt my mind was overwhelmed with ideas. It had been a long-time dream of mine to make it to the Yukon, so to finally accomplish that, and for it to be possible because of my music, was also a very overwhelming thing.”

The instrumentation on Heart of My Own is a lot more varied than Oh, My Darling, notes Basia. “I think it is at times extremely sparse and, well, spacious, with big choirs singing, and then it gets really dense with really spirited and rolling drums, and I think I even managed to pull off a Johnny Cash–inspired country song.” She plays autoharp, guitar, piano, organ, pianoette, banjo, ukulele, bass and of course, sings; her brother and many dear friends, old and new, play everything else. The strings chase after each other as though coming down a mountain. The autoharp’s versatility is explored, fitting just as well in a soul song as a folk song, its sound by turns charming and warm, then icy cold and precise. The horns mean business, but still have a sense of humor! But most important to Basia is the spirit that has been captured here. There is a determination in these songs. They are at times about a broken heart, a careless heart, a faithful heart, and a hopeful heart, but above all, a wandering heart.

Ruby Throat - Out Of A Black Cloud Came A Bird (2009)

Multifaceted singer-songwriter, performance/installation artist and poet, Katiejane Garside found fame (and chart success) as the singer with the influential early-Nineties indie band Daisychainsaw, issuing a number of singles before disbanding, after which Garside reunited with ex-Daisychainsaw member Crispin Gray to form QueenAdreena. Since then she has collaborated with a diverse collection of musicians (members of the Sugarcubes, Mínus, Hector Zazou to name but a few). Most recently Katiejane has been recording and touring as part of Ruby Throat. With a bipolar folk noir soundscape, the poetry of a slow unravel, and the ghost of a barren desert blues, Ruby Throat offers an experience of emotional fragility.

John Paul Keith & the One Four Fives – Spills and Thrills (2009)

Telecaster-wielding John Paul Keith has been rattling around the fringes of the roots rock arena since around 1994. He has racked up hundreds of smoking shows with a variety of outfits including the V-Roys, one of his earliest, with little to show for it. The Knoxville, TN based guitarist/vocalist moved operations to Memphis in 2005, took a few years to put together a solid band of like-minded musicians who understood his gutsy take on rock, soul, and country, and finally released this debut disc in 2009. It's a rollicking set of garagy rock & roll, rockabilly, country, swamp, and surf with just enough of that indescribably Memphis mojo to bring soul into the equation too. Retro enthusiasts will recognize strains of Creedence, the early Beatles, and any number of rockers with dashes of Farfisa and a loose-limbed twang to their sound. Just when it seems everything that can be accomplished with three chords has already been done, Keith comes along and tears into a dozen originals that, while not exactly reinventing the wheel, will fill the '50s linoleum dancefloor for a half-hour. He sports an unassuming voice, somewhat like Jerry Lee Lewis, and his band, especially keyboardist Al Gamble, finds that elusive Sun records energy so difficult to capture in other cities. There can't help but be a retro quality to this music, but Keith and band never simply mimic their musical influences. The songs rumble and rock led by Keith's choppy Telecaster, and even when he obviously rips off a few licks on the peppy "She'll Dance to Anything" (from the Champs' "Tequila"), his contagious vibe is so swinging that you won't care. The album's one instrumental, "Cookie Bones," sounds like a mash-up of every cool Booker T. & the MG's tune, and the rollicking "Pure Cane Sugar" does a terrific job echoing the Beatles trying to be Larry Williams. When the closing rocker "Doin' the Devils Work" rolls around only 36 minutes after the disc began, you'll wish there was more. That's the sign of a keeper, and even though it took too long to get here, hopefully there is more where this came from. -- AMG

R.I.P. Vic Chesnutt

Singer/ songwriter Vic Chesnutt has been pronounced dead following a short time in a coma following a suicide attempt Christmas Eve.

The paraplegic singer/song writer first came to prominence when he was spotted by R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe; Stipe produced Vic Chesnutt’s first two albums, Little (1990) and West of Rome (1991).

Ceshnutt worked with a variety of artists over a total of 13 albums, with artists including Garbage, The Smashing Pumpkins, Madonna, R.E.M. and Live covering his songs in a tribute album for charity in 1996.

In recent times Chesnutt has battled depression, and financial issues including a large unpaid hospital bill.

Chesnutt was 45.

Fanga-Sira Ba-2009

New album – out 10th November 2009.
2010’s revelation could well come from Montpellier. For the last ten years or so, the collective ‘Fanga’ has been on the up, blending afrobeat, jazz and funk and playing a music that is eminently spiritual. Fanga means ‘strength of conviction’ in Dioula and the commitment of the group is emblematic of its name.

An alliance of complementary personalities and cosmopolitan energies, Fanga first took form in 1998. Returning from Africa, Serge Amiano brings back a few vinyls of the likes of Fela, CS Crew and CK Mann that he plays to the Burkinabese rapper Korbo. Amiano being a hip-hop producer naturally takes on the role of the group’s artistic director right from the start.
The discovery of this urban African music of the 1970s quickly forms the basis of a shared passion. In 2000 the album ‘Black Voices’ by Tony Allen definitively seals Fanga’s birth and its afrobeat foundations with an obvious orientation towards dance and the solid relationship between the eight members of the group.
Fanga brings out its first six tracks in 2001 with a minimal rhythm section. Joined by the bass player Rajaneesh Dwivedi and the drummer Samuel Devauchelle, the group records ‘Afrokalyptik’ in 2003, its first album. The following album ‘Natural Juice’ comes out in 2007, warmly received and with much acclaim. Fanga is not only highly praised by Gilles Peterson but also the New York magazine Wax Poetics.
Having played with Antibalas, Seun Kuti and Kokolo, Fanga has nurtured solid relationships within the international afrobeat community. In the studio, the group’s path crosses that of Tony Allen and the sadly demised Segun Demisa, both pillars of Fela Kuti’s Africa 70, as well as that of the iconoclastic rapper Mike Ladd. Fanga launches its live project on stages around England, Holland, Spain and Italy.
Despite being firmly rooted in certain Nigerian and Ghanean musical traditions (those of the 1970s’ afro-beat and high-life) Fanga is equally at home to musical concoction, as demonstrated by the samples and other hip-hop and electronic ingredients, not to mention the vocals in Dioula, English and French. The gritty horns and earthy analogue keyboards shape the group’s sound whilst Korbo has no hesitation in embracing his Mandingue roots.
Flowing without restraint, Fanga exudes both spirituality and an intense persuasive power. It is home to an iron fist, characteristic of the most proud and organic of black musics. Melodious and hypnotic, the pieces developed by the group not only strive towards a groove conducive to a state of trance but is also equally appealing to the mind.
Whilst avoiding lengthy discourses, revolutionary messages and the pretension of offering answers to the problems of the world, Korbo nonetheless poses serious lines of reflection, in particular, defending the right to be different as well as nurturing a deeper harmony between humankind and nature. He denounces the social injustice arising from the pyramidal economic structures that have become uncontrollable and egotistical. Newspaper headlines often inspire Fanga’s songs.
Brought up on the raw energy of hip-hop, the group reposes equally on certain values that even today can only be found in Africa, a sort of candour and instinctive sense of rhythm which lends such freshness to Fanga. This urge to respond when faced with a base emotion, however fleeting, has governed their musical progression since the beginning of the 2000s.
Empassioned and passionate, their music contains alluring promise. Fanga takes on an entire dimension on stage. Those who’ve had the chance of seeing the group live can only agree. Under the ongoing artistic direction of Serge Amiano, Fanga has recorded its third album in spring 2009 in Montpellier, entitled ‘Sira Ba’ (The Long Road).
Over the course of nine pieces, the collective Fanga offers a look at the past through the eyes of the present and the future. The Jamaican singer Winston McAnuff infuses a reggae accent in I Go On Without You, whereas the Togo All Stars orchestra shines out like a thousand fires on Dounya, one of the strongest and most jubilant of the album, resonating in the afro-funk echos of Moussa Doumbia and Amadou Ballaké.
Alternating drawn-out lyrical climaxes, explosive brass passages, killer riffs and melodic ease, ‘Sira Ba’ displays a powerful force of conviction, reflecting an uncompromised musical complicity and an impressive flow of energy. Julien Raulet’s guitar work reacts perfectly with the keyboards of David Rekkab and the percussion of Eric Durand.
Martial Reverdy’s baritone reinforces the energy and persuasive power exuded by Fanga, along with the lyrics that take us straight back to the most glorious hour of the golden age of afrobeat, laced with the influences of that ‘great black music’. Once fallen under the spell of this strength of conviction, all that remains is to dance.

Laudably authentic old-time Americana from Los Angeles resident Frank Fairfield, a man with a prodigious working knowledge of old 78s and rural bluegrass who plies his trade with his grandfather's old fiddle, banjo and gitbox. On great tracks like 'Cumberland Gap' and 'To The Sweet Sunny South' Fairfield sounds like a modern-day Dock Boggs, fusing blues with Appalachian influences. It's not hard to see why Fairtfield's won himself followers from across the board, scoring touring supports with Fleet Foxes and earning the endorsement of Grammy-winning producer Chris King (the producer behind the acclaimed Charley Patton and People Take Warning Box Set). The combination of meticulous performances and rough, in-the-moment recordings helps keep this record from sounding like mere imitation, grounding the young Californian's art in the same spirit as the pioneers and bluesmen that inspired him. The Portland Cello Project kicks off The Thao & Justin Power Sessions with a cover of a John Tavener song, leading right into a typically Nico-esque vocal cameo by Thao Nguyen. It's a good sign. That they blend the spiritual with the dark and mysterious is fitting, since the cello is one of the few instruments that can evoke the infinite and the heartbreakingly local within the same line. The album is quite the emotional workout, but The Portland Cello Project isn't afraid to rock, nor to mix some distortion into its transcendental brew.

Thao Nguyen and Justin Power contribute vocals to songs they brought with them to the sessions, with Powers’ tracks (especially “Hungry Liars” and “Cut the Rope”) being among the more up-tempo and edgy. Nguyen breezes through several songs, with “Beat (Health, Life & Fire)” being the most remarkable. There are four other, more stricly cello-driven songs as well, including a cover of Pantera’s “Mouth for War.” Yeah, it works.

The 16 classically trained cellists that form The Portland Cello Project have performed in a variety of settings, including punk clubs. Their generous ear for music of all kinds and the ability to draw the deepest emotion (with humor) from it is helping them create a signature sound and career. The Thao & Justin Power Sessions should serve as an introduction to the ensemble, and it should only further open your own ears. -- Prefixmag

My God, this is a great record. Imagine the Fun Lovin’ Criminals bumping into Tom Waits in an obscure jazz bar somewhere in Mexico and you’re still not close to doing justice to Be Yourself, an album which bucks the zietgiest with so much enthusiasm you just have to love it.

Highlights are the second track Upside Down, which sounds like Bob Dylan popped into the studio for a guest vocal while sporting a sombrero, and the Bacharach-like (no really) True Friends.

When you hear a record as discordant with the music scene as Be Yourself it’s easy to assume that it’s been recorded with the author’s tongue planted hard in his cheek but that misses the point here. Yes, the smiles come aplenty and witty lyrics are definitely Mr. Fish’s currency of choice, but these songs have been so well crafted that they deserve more than a casual, amused listen.

With spring on the way, here’s the first record that deserves to soundtrack your summer.

The arrangements are full of lovely little touches: flourishes of Spanish guitar, bursts of swinging horns. It’s like Tom Waits in a good mood, or maybe Leonard Cohen doing Dean Martin backed by an Irish showband. There are a lot of obvious influences, but the Mudbug Club embrace them in such good spirit it is impossible not to be carried along by their enthusiasm.

Six years is way beyond an eternity in Rock ‘n’ Roll, and yes, it has been that long since the release of Be Yourself. Just as well that Jerry Fish sups from a well that is sunk way beneath the topsoil of pop. Once he left the constraints of the four piece rock format, he found a whole universe of music suddenly become a tangible and touchable prospect: New Orleans Jazz, Brazilian funk. Noir soundtracks, all manner of odd mondo scenes and black mambo jive. An Emotional Fish used to cover Tom’s ‘Raindogs’, The Mudbug Club might reject it as too obvious.

On that note, the opening ‘The Hole In The Boat’ is a swampy seafood-fed shuffle with Ribot-like guitar and zombie cardship vocal from Mr. Fish. Jim Jarmusch would pawn his brothel creepers for the rights. Even more exotic is the single ‘Back To Before’, a delicate waltz around the ballroom of lost romance that’s stitched with singing saws, pedal steel and tinkertoy piano, while Fish’s latest dancing partner Carol Keogh contributes a truly remarkable turn somewhere between Patsy Cline and Mary Margaret O’Hara. One expects Lewis Carroll to pop his head through the curtains inquiring after a certain miss Liddell. Another duet, ‘Hell Or Heaven Sent’ featuring Imelda May, takes the form of a sweltering motel chronicle halfway between Howie Gelb and Barry Gifford, while ‘Rogue Melody’ is a slow C&W sway with Mariachi brass and a welcome reprise from Ms Keogh. Elsewhere on tunes like ‘It Takes Balls To Be A Butterfly’ (nice title), Mr. Fish swaggers in a Willy Deville way that suggests he really needs a Hollywood agent. The jury’s still out on whether his force of personality and the immaculate cut of the band compensate for the odd wanting song (time will tell how ‘Baby You Are In Or You’re Out’ wears with repeated plays.) but such misgivings are rare. The closing ‘Where The Sun Don’t Shine’ and instrumental closing tune deserve to accompany the end credits of some arthouse masterpiece. Taking its name from Bloom's flexible, elegant backing band, 'Ghosts of Radio' picks up where his excellent 'Moses' left off, further exploring wistful, deliciously melancholic memory with a cinematic eye for detail and a poet's touch. Bracingly punctuated with deft guitar figures by Eric Straumanis (whose playing delights throughout), the opening 'Minnesota' is a loping, easy-rolling folk-rock gem, while 'Union Suit' approximates Simon massaging a Neil Young country-rocker. The war-torn, elegiac 'Prophetstown' yields to a bemused, bittersweet 'Rosalie,' whose hints of The Band's music hall sensibilities escalate into full 'Basement Tapes'-era junk-trap glory on the hilarious 'Red Dodge Dart.' 'Idle Signs of Summer,' with its colorful, daft'n'randy small-town vignettes and infectious chorus, is a minor masterpiece, the feisty, slightly nutty 'Oh My Soul' conjures a Terry Adams (NRBQ) fever dream, and the closing 'Baltimore' celebrates a peculiar spin on Death's release.
