Taking time out from Betchadupa - the band he formed as a 15 year old with his schoolmates - Liam Finn releases his first solo effort, putting some of those talented songwriting genes to good use. I'll Be Lightning is not only garnering more praise than his band's previous efforts but has also managed to pick up some better reviews than the latest from dad Neil's reformed Crowded House or Uncle Tim's most recent effort!
Finn shows that he is something of a jack-of-all-trades; writing, recording, producing and for the most part playing all of the instruments himself. His solo live show - which has recently been the warm-up act for Crowded House (of which he is also an auxilary live member) - sees Finn sampling and looping guitar riffs on the fly, adding basslines to the loops before climbing onto the drums and thrashing away. The results are often chaotic and clumsy and I'll Be Lightning has some of this same ramshackle-ness but as Finn himself quite rightly points out, "the accidents and the mistakes are often the things you fall in love with". Indeed, with these imperfections, there is a sense of an artist demoing the songs in his bedroom on a tape recorder only in this case the bedroom is his Father's state-of-the-art Roundhead Studios in Auckland and the tape recorder is some of the best audio equipment money can by. Tape is still the preferred medium here though - no computers used in the making of this album.
Finn's voice dominates proceedings and it's obvious he has the same penchant for Beatles-eque song and vocal harmony arrangements as his old man, but he uses them more inventively and with often spectacular results. Many of the album's songs seem to be centred around the breakup of Finn's relationship and as such often take a melancholy turn, such as 'Fire In Your Belly' 'Shadow Of Your Man' and the wonderful 'Lullaby' which is largely made up of layers of vocal harmonies. It's not all doom and gloom though, with plenty of upbeat moments to balance things out - some strummier numbers bringing to mind The Phoenix Foundation, while Connan Hosford (Connan & The Moccasins) pops up on the title track providing autoharp and his distinctive pixie-like vocals and wonky stylings. An extremely impressive solo debut and for a guy that is only 23 years old, a promising sign of some great things to come!

Like distant radio transmissions from Martiniland mingling with Brian Wilson at Stereolab's beach house party, the High Llamas... well, they pretty much got it goin' on.
Hawaii is two discs filled with more shockingly cheesy, strings- and- vibes- powered instrumental magic than you could ever dream of. It's the soundtrack to Chachi's high school slow dance erection. And if you're as drawn the soundtracks to the music of '80s made- for- television love scenes as I am, you'll dig the tall- swaying- grass harmonies of "Ill-Fitting Suits," the Zumpano- esque "Dressing Up the Old Dakota" and the suave- new- day sounds of "Cuckoo's Out."
Through 35 tracks and 115 minutes of unstoppable cornball beauty, strung together with half-minute interludes and segues, the High Llamas show they can double-up the personalities of Nick Drake and Ferrante and Teicher for a surprisingly refreshing, non-carbonated soft drink called Fucking Bloody Wonderful.

Tocotronic is a German rock band founded in 1993 . Similar to Blumfeld and influential for bands such as Tomte, of which singer, guitarist Thees Uhlmann worked as a roadie at the "K.O.O.K."-Tour and wrote the book "Wir könnten Freunde werden..." (we could be friends...), Tocotronic not only innovated German language music, but also inspired a number of later bands, such as Wir sind Helden. Their influence on pop culture is widespread, from fashion (Tocotronic made the combination of 1970s style training jackets with cheap second-hand ad-shirts famous in Germany) to the playful and weird look of their early records.
Tocotronic got signed to "L'Age D'or", a german independent record label situated in Hamburg, in 1994 after quickly gaining popularity in the local scene. Their early style consists of ironic sloganeering ("I want to be part of a youth movement") and almost diary-like songwriting, paired with a lo-fi punkrock sound. In 1995 they released their debut-album "Digital Is Better". Their third album, released in 1996, was the first to hit the german charts. The music got more complex over time, their lyrics less direct, resulting in a sound that was compared to that of "Pavement" on Tocotronic's 1999 album "K.O.O.K". The self-titled "White Album", released in 2002, features dreamlike songs; metaphoric, heavily produced, highly polished, it completes a slow but steady course away from their early works ("eins zu eins ist jetzt vorbei" - "one-to-one is over now").
Despite never being overly commercially successful, Tocotronic have a steady fanbase in germany and their records have been reviewed in mainstream newspapers and music magazines alike.
In January 2007, Tocotronic announced the release date of their new album "Kapitulation", which will be the July 6 2007. Also announced was the end of Tocotronic's cooperation with their long-time label "L'age D'or", and consequently "Kapitulation" will be released by Vertigo Berlin, a sublabel of Universal music.
The current band members and positions are Jan Müller (bass), Arne Zank (drums), Dirk von Lowtzow (rhythm guitar, vocals), and, since 2004, Rick McPhail (lead guitar, keyboard).
The Flying Club Cup is the upcoming second album by Zach Condon, aka Beirut, and is scheduled to be released in October 2007. [1] It will feature string arrangements by Owen Pallett of the band Final Fantasy, while it will be mastered by Griffin Rodriguez.[2]
Condon on the name and inspiration for the new album:
"I'm thinking about calling [the new album] The Flying Club Cup...Back in the early 1900s, like the 1910s or 1920s, there used to be this hot air balloon festival in Paris-- it's titled after that and after this very bizarre 1910 photo I found [by Leon Gimpel]. It's one of the first color photos ever made, at the World's Fair, and it...shows all these ancient hot air balloons about to take off in the middle of Paris. I just thought it was the most surreal image I'd seen in a long time."
Condon on the sound of the new album:
"I was listening to a lot of Jacques Brel and French chanson music-- pop songs shrouded in big, glorious, over-the-top arrangements and all this drama-- and that was in some sense unfamiliar territory to me. So I started buying new instruments and relying on things I wasn't necessarily comfortable with, like French horns and euphoniums, carrying these big, epic big brass parts that I used to do all on trumpets, and working with accordion and organ instead of all ukulele-- very much throwing myself in the world of classical pop music, I guess you could say."

In case you had forgotten, this album will remind you how pertinent and beautiful the songs of Bob Dylan are. The trouble with Tim O'Brien is that he makes it seem so easy; the challenge of reinterpreting classics may escape many. The repertoire covers decades and styles in one giant stroke. The playing is, as usual, impeccable. The inclusion of "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" is excellent; if only he hadn't been in such a hurry on "Forever Young." ~ William Ashford, All Music Guide

Pollack is a former member of Glasgow legends The Delgados, and a founder of their pioneering Chemikal Underground record label. This debut combines lyrical twists and radiant melodies into a gorgeous and organic whole. The songs are fresh, modern, and personal, deftly constructed and littered with great hooks. "Emma Pollock has a terrific voice - slightly scuffed and casually soulful" - Time Out London.

Whether you are a long-time Sia fan from her days with Zero 7 (Simple Things, When It Falls and The Garden), or a more recent convert after hearing her solo track “Breathe Me” featured in the final episode of “Six Feet Under,” you will no doubt be excited to know that Sia will release a new solo full-length CD this fall entitled Some People Have Real Problems.
The new collection of music is at once upbeat, quirky, and achingly gorgeous, featuring incredible song writing and lush arrangements to frame Sia’s stunning vocals. Sia also enlisted the help of a few talented friends when recording Some People Have Real Problems, including Beck, who sings on a track called 'Academia.'
The video for standout track ‘Buttons’ has already garnered Sia a bit of attention after being posted by blogger Perez Hilton. The video has taken off virally, charting as the #1 most linked and #2 most viewed clip on YouTube the week it was leaked onto the Internet.
Now living in Los Angeles, Sia will support her new release with a month-long U.S. tour this fall. And New York fans take note: Sia will also perform an exclusive show in New York at Hiro Ballroom on September 12.

After leaving GusGus in order to pursue his own musical path, Danнel reached a pinnacle of creativity and quality as he embarked on this debut solo project. The album is a collection of songs Danнel has painstakingly crafted, composed and orchestrated. It reunites him with Bix (who has remixed Madonna, Beck & Sigur Ros) after the pair collaborated so successfully on GusGus’ second album “This Is Normal”. The result is a collection of blissful, mini-symphonies with an infectious pop edge. Electronic hisses, fizzes, squelching bass and Eleanor Rigby-esque strings announce the arrival of debut single ‘If You Leave Me Now’. Danнel and Bix have created a rich tapestry of orchestration, eerie bleeps and rousing soulful vocals. Together, they have produced something sublime –a 21st century wall of sound as well as something enduringly classic.

Patti Smith's fourth album since her 1988 comeback vehicle Dream of Life finds the plugged-in poetess looking outward after the extended period of introspection that followed the death of her husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith. The scathing eight-minute-plus "Strange Messengers" illustrates Smith's renewed interest in the world around her, as the streetwise New Yorker turned Midwestern suburbanite rails at crackheads ("That's how you repay your ancestors?"). Working with producer Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Pixies) and fronting a quartet built around longtime lieutenants Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty, Smith's music harkens back to the commercial apex of New Wave; indeed, "Gone Pie" sounds like the singer sitting in with Blondie. In fact, Gung Ho as a whole feels like the album the high-priestess of punk didn't make in the early '80s, a time when she was laying low and a number of artists inspired by her visionary early works were racking up MTV and modern-rock airtime. Gung Ho is somewhat muddled in execution, but then again, so are the times. --Steven Stolder

To most, Vashti Bunyan simply materialized from the great musical ether sometime circa 2004 (when her lone LP at the time, 1970's Just Another Diamond Day, was unearthed and reissued). But the fact is she was making delicate, wholesome, homespun folk tunes even before the days of Diamond, and certainly long, long before the aliens dumped Devendra Banhart on our planet.
These pre-Diamond gems-- two discs full of 'em-- will comprise a special collection of Vashti's early works that FatCat plans to release abroad on October 8.
t's titled Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind - Early Singles and Demos 1964-1967 and that Vashti's U.S. label, DiCristina Stair Builders, intends to unleash the beast Stateside as well on October 16. Songs include "Train Song", "Love Song", "Winter Is Blue", "Coldest Night of the Year", and "I'd Like to Walk Around in Your Mind". The full tracklist is below.
To help get the kids amped for early Bunyan, FatCat will reissue Vashti's very first single, "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind"-- originally released in 1965 under just the artist's first name-- on September 10 overseas. Vashti recorded the A-side, a tune penned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (possibly members of some band of note), with a full orchestra. Meanwhile, the flip, "I Want to Be Alone", has Vashti being just that. The 7" is limited to 1,000 copies, but if you miss out, fret not: both jams will also feature on the two-disc set. UPDATE: DiCristina Stair Builders will release this single in the U.S. on September 18 in 7" and digital formats.

Digitally Remastered Edition of Two Classic LPs Combined in a Deluxe Double CD Package. Despite the Undeniably High Quality of his Songs (Which have Been Covered by the Likes of Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Iain Matthews and Waylon Jennings) Paul Siebel is Far from Being a Household Name. However, Within Folk Circles and Among Songwriters, his Two Albums - 1969's "Woodsmoke and Oranges" and 1971's "Jack-knife Gypsy" - Are Legendary. He'd Gathered a Handful of Fine Musicians, Including Guitarist David Bromberg, Violinist Richard Greene, and Steel Guitarist Weldon Myrick. Elektra's Jac Holzman Recorded Ten Siebel Originals Quickly. Despite (Or Because Of) the Small Budget and Lack of Time, Siebel and Company Crafted an Incredible Record that Still Sounds Vibrant 30 Years after the Fact.

Recorded in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Neil Young lived there while recording "After The Gold Rush" and the area has also been home to Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood, and members of The Doors. Those ghosts inhabit the sound and vibe of these recording sessions. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic, gorgeous rock album. Some songs are fragile and solipsistic, others have a pronounced tropicalia influence, and still others are wildly electric and epic.

Achingly gorgeous and hauntingly stark, Mark Hollis' self-titled debut picks up where he left off with Talk Talk's Laughing Stock seven years earlier, re-emerging at the nexus point where jazz, ambient, and folk music collide. It's quite possibly the most quiet and intimate record ever made, each song cut to the bone for maximum emotional impact and every note carrying enormous meaning. Hollis paints his music in fine, exquisite strokes, with an uncanny mastery of atmosphere that's frequently devastating. And if anything, his singularly resonant voice has grown even more plaintive with the passage of time, which -- combined with the understated artistry and minimalist beauty of tracks like "The Colour of Spring" and "Watershed" -- makes Mark Hollis a truly unique and indelible listening experience. His obvious understanding of the power of silence aside, one prays he doesn't again wait for the seven-year itch to strike before returning. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

The tale of Mariee Sioux began as delicately and spiritually as her captivating song, as a small ember introduced to the universe that soon grew into a flame of hope and illumination. Her dazzling debut album, Faces in the Rocks, weaves together the poetic interpretations of the universe’s deep truths and interconnectedness that have intrigued her since childhood. Each spin invites listeners to be the cast in Mariee’s entrancing tale with a journey ahead that is only beginning.
The stage was set in her hometown of Nevada City, CA, a historically creative community in which artists have flourished over the ages, where Mariee intertwined the vivid verse she had been writing as a child with the life lessons she has learned as an adult for this powerful record. Her roots had been planted deep in music through the love of her mandolin-playing father, but it was not until Mariee ventured a life-changing trip to Patagonia at the age of 17 that she began to play an instrument herself. She soon perfected the spry, delicate finger picking guitar technique featured on Faces in the Rocks, a faultless accompaniment to her strong yet sweetly cooing vocals, and toured internationally with her adoring compatriots Brightblack Morning Light.Mariee Sioux
Featuring Grammy-nominee Gentle Thunder’s enchanting sound on a redwood-carved Native American flute as well as her own famed father Gary Sobonya on mandolin, Mariee recorded Faces in May 2007 with a troupe of Nevada City’s talented musicians. Recorded with the intent of aligning the magnificence of the human voice with the universe’s creative energy, each song is a stirring exploration of life. Her tales range from the profundity of friendship on the single “Friendboats” to the yearning of self-understanding on “Bundles,” each laced with fabled images and poignant verse. “Two Tongues at One Time,” recently released on a rare 7” vinyl, is a sonnet-filled homage to the ancestors who traversed the wild lands of America hundreds of years ago, reminding listeners of our vital ties to our past.
Continuing the folk tradition of songwriting greats such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Wolf and Nick Drake, Faces glorifies an appreciation of the working spirit and the oneness of nature that remains timeless.

Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic–born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. Now that's the kind of magic you want from musicals. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
