@ 320 Kbit/s mp3Patrick Gallois, whose recent recording of Telemann solo fantasias has already been well received (also DG, 6/93), is a player of agility and sensitivity, an intelligent artist who can make his metal flute speak with all the subtlety of varied articulation and tone colour that some of us (I'll own up to this) had come to assume was only possible on the wooden baroque instrument. These are deliciously light performances, in the best sense of the word; plenty of air allowed in, sparing and thoughtful use of vibrato, and above all an infectious bounce to the music-making in general. Gallois's sunny approach is matched by the excellent string players of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, whose stunning unanimity of ensemble, crispness of attack and sheer concentration-level once again make it hard to believe that they operate without a conductor. And both soloist and orchestra are equally responsive, too, to the uniquely tranquil beauties of the Vivaldian slow movement; try out the veiled mystery of the Sonno movement from Concerto No. 2 to see what I mean, or the dark, measured tread of the Largo of No. 5. Great stuff!
