Background information:
Omar Bashir: An incredible talent, raised in a family of artists – his grandfather Bachri Abdel Aziz, his father Mounir Bashir and his uncle Jamil were musicians – he began his musical training when he was five years old, when his father gave him his first violin.

When he was seven years old, he already frequented the Conservatory of Bagdad and when he was nine he gave his first solo concert.

Moving to Hungary in 1991, the homeland of his mother, he studied piano, singing and direction of choir at the Liszt University.

Since 1990 Omar Bashir has been playing the oud as a professional. Apart from solo tours he has realized a lot of concerts with his father Mounir, who’s great virtuosity represented a constant stimulus for the young artist (he died in 1997).

Background information
Amina Alaoui has had a major impact on the evolution of Middle Eastern classical music. A virtuoso pianist, Alaoui has performed in concert with such Moroccan artists as Djamchid Chemirani, Pedro Soler, Hameed Khan, Pablo Cueco, Hughes de Courson, and Luis Llach and has composed and played music for many of the country's top choreographers. Born in Fez, Morocco, Alaoui enrolled in the Conservatory of Rabat at the age of six. In addition to studying classical piano, she studied traditional Arabic-Andalusian music and Moroccan and Middle Eastern dance. She published her first collection of poems at the age of ten. Although she studied philosophy and linguistics (Arabic, French, and Spanish) at the University of Rabat, Alaoui continued to focus on music. She studied Persian classical music with Djalal Akhbari and European medieval music with Henri Agnel.

Zein l’Abdin
Background information
Zein l'Abdin was born in 1939 on the Island of Lamu on the northern Kenya coast. His father was a weil-known patron of the arts, himself an accomplished player of the old Swahili lute called kibangala. Zein's father often hosted wealthy merchants arriving from Arabia with the monsoon trade winds. The young Zein witnessed sumptuous feasts and nights of music and dance, when the lute players and musicians accompanying the Arabic crews measured themselves with Ali Baskuta, Zein's maternal uncle, and Lamu's leading 'ud player of the time.
The musical style of Zein and Party is called taarab by the Swahili people of the East African Coast. This is less a stylistic description, since many personal and regional styles exist. Among the Swahili taarab refers to a festive occasion which commonly closes marriage celebrations, and at which this type of music is played.
As with the lyrics, so Zein's music also follows the traditions of the northern coast, by including the rhythms and melodies of many old Swahili ngoma (music-song-dance) events like twari, goma, vugo, together with contemporary dance rhythms like kumbwaya or chakacha.

Background information:
Khaled is the poster boy for the modern form of Algerian desert blues known as Raï. Certainly he's been its most successful modern exponent, the first to find success on the international stage. Born Khalidu Hajji Brahim in Oran, the traditional center of Raï, he was attracted to music from an early age, especially to Raï, which was seen at the time of the music of outcasts, drunks, and prostitutes, although he also loved James Brown and the Beatles. He taught himself to play guitar, bass, harmonica, and accordion, releasing his debut disc, "Trigh Lycee," when he was just 14. Leaving home, he began on the peripatetic life of the musician, performing frequently at clubs, parties, and weddings (the only places where Raï was seen as an "acceptable" form of entertainment). It was in the early '80s that Cheb (meaning "young") Khaled's fortunes changed, when he met up with producer Rachid Baba Ahmed, who was revolutionizing the Raï form by introducing Western electric instruments and studio techniques. Together, they changed the face of the music. Khaled was the right voice at the right time and the addition of drum machines, synthesizers, and guitars took the music to a new generation, even though much of it continued to be censored by the Algerian government, which considered the style subversive. A number of those early tracks can be found on Le Meilleur de Cheb Khaled on Blue Silver.

By 1986, Khaled (who'd now dropped the Cheb) had been forced to move to Paris, as violence in Algeria claimed lives and he'd been threatened several times (producer Ahmed would, in fact, be murdered, as would several Raï performers). Arriving with a reputation, he attempted to take his music to a global level, although his real debut, Kutche, did him no favors with its jazz-rock arrangements. He fared much better with 1992's Khaled, with some tracks produced by Michael Brook and others by Don Was. It yielded his first big hit, "Didi," and helped consolidate his reputation as Raï's first superstar. That was firmly cemented the following year with the Was-produced N'ssi N'ssi, which mixed funk, rock, and an Egyptian orchestra behind Khaled's persuasive voice and winning smile for a major commercial breakthrough in France, winning a European, as well as North African, audience. In 1996, he hit again with Sahra, whose first single, "Aïcha," written for his daughter, gave Khaled a French number one hit. A mix of producers gave varying sounds, with French hip-hoppers Akhenton & Imhotep proving the hardest on the track "Oran Marseille" with its rapid-fire rap. There was even some reggae on "Mektoubi," which merged relatively seamlessly with the North African sound. While well-received critically, it sold little in the U.S. however, unlike France, where the album became Khaled's biggest success. Perhaps the moment that justified his title of King of Raï, however, came in 1999, when he headlined the 1-2-3 Soleils concert in Paris (which led to the album of the same name), over Rachid Taha and Faudel. It was the biggest Algerian show ever staged in France and left no doubt that Khaled remained Raï's hottest attraction. 2000 brought Kenza and a change of producer, as former prog rocker Steve Hillage helped bring a more organic feel to the proceedings. A smash in Europe, once again it did little business in the U.S. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

Each year in Fes, Morocco, some of the world's most extraodinary music rises above the city's ancient medina. This is the site of the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music: a one of-a-kind celebration of the divine in music, song, and dance. Nowhere else is the confluence of music and the sacred more joyfully and reverently celebrated than in these highlights from the second Fes Festival. B'ismillah (in the name of God) is alive with passion, inspiration, and musical realization that transcend national and religious boundaries. In these devotional songs we discover what the sufis have always known: that music in nothing less than an echo of God.

Omar Metioui was born in Tangiers, Morocco in 1962. He initially studied pharmacology in Brussels, before returning to Tangiers to study solmization, Andalusi singing and oud at the Conservatory of Music and Dance. Between 1976 and 1980 he sang and played the oud with El Arbi s-Siyyar, the main Andalusi orchestra in Tangiers. He is currently first lute with the Conservatory orchestra, and continues to perform throughout Europe and the Arab world.
Performers:
Omar Metioui (lute, arabic lute, voice), Said Belcadi (voice, tar, darbuka), Hassan Ajyar (voice, choir), Eduardo Paniagua (qanun), David Mayoral (zarb), Ahmed Al-Gazi (rabab), Noureddine Acha (nay), Abdessalam El Amrani Boukhobza (tar, fuqara), Said El Ouerdighi (fuqara (sonorous respiration)), El Kabit Touhiar (fuqara (sonorous respiration)), Montasser Touihar (fuqara (sonorous respiration)), Mohammed Dahdouh (fuqara (sonorous respiration)), Abdelaziz Dahdouh (fuqara (sonorous respiration))
The tracks on this CD are a mixture of solo oud and traditional Andalusian pieces for ensemble,
and it also features the oud players Said Belcadi and Hassan Ajyar. As well as his normal oud,
Omar Metioui uses the Tunisian ud 'arbi (on track 12), which has four pairs of gut strings tuned
to fifths and is played with an eagle quill.

The lute in music from Al-Andalus and the Maghreb.
Eduardo Paniagua said "Omar Metioui, with his introspection in the style of the old masters from
the beginning of this century, is giving back to the lute the importance which this instrument had
historically in Hispano-Arab music."
Indeed, playing of this calibre makes one wonder why the instrument lost any ground at all.

***********
The North African nation of Morocco possesses a diverse music scene, where traditional and popular styles collide and collude. Sacred and secular concerns are omnipresent. Gutty strings and nasal, resonant singers wend their way through sweet-sour scales, hypnotic rhythms, and knife-sharp harmonies. A tinny taxi radio blares a new chaabi (pop) hit, a street-side bard bawls out a broadside, an all-female chorus accompanied by an all-male back-up band wanders from party to party, and a local TV station airs a concert by a classical Arab-Andalouse orchestra--all this while the minaret of every mosque in town simultaneously intones the Muslim call to prayer. It must have been a challenge to gather so many complex and constantly evolving styles onto a single CD, but as usual, the Rough Guide comes through with flying colors. The music has a fervent heat and a graceful rawness but also reveals a core of hard-won serenity.

Songlines magazine, June 2008 issue (#52)
The bewitching Deus et Diabolus (God and the Devil) threads together the voices of three women: Mara Aranda, from Valencia's L'Ham de Foc; Sigrid Hausen, from Munich's medieval music group Estampie; and Iman al Kandoussi. They are accompanied by a lively ensemble of flutes, qanun, ud, saz, rabab, fiddle, nyckelharpa, hurdy-gurdy, pandera tambourines and percussion. It's an inspiring encounter between the talented musicians of L'Ham de Foc and Estampie recorded in the old Cartuja Monastery, Cazalla de la Sierra, Seville. This is sprightly music, fusing Mediterranean, Oriental and medieval moods. The ethos underpinning their reinterpretations of Arab, Jewish and Christian cantigas to the Virgin Mary, their reimaginings of sensual dances and Arabic songs, is expressed by a line from poet Ibn al-Arabi, `Wherever the caravan may bend its steps/Love is my religion'.
While each exquisite piece speaks for itself, they flow together like a song cycle embedded in a utopian view of the past as one of dialogue and peaceful co-existence between religious cultures. The 13th-century `Cantiga de Santa María' is just one breathtaking moment, transporting in the way the timbres and textures of voices and instruments interweave. The arrangements for each of the 12 songs are stunningly varied, each `voice' jewel like, distinctly within the fabric of pieces.
Frustratingly, the attractive booklet (in German, Spanish and English) offering general background and interspersing songs texts in Arabic and old Spanish, with seductive photos of the three women and Seville's Arabic Baths, fails to include the vivid `story' detail that would help reference the individual songs that capture attention. Still, it's a brilliant disc nonetheless.

Hamza el-Din was born in Nubia, amongst the people of the Upper Nile. While studying engineering in Cairo he took up the oud, and later went on to study the instrument at the Conservatory of Music in Cairo during his spare time. It was at this time, and while undertaking further study in Rome, that he began to develop his unique style, which blends themes from Nubian traditional music with the more structured framework of Arabic classical music.

Omar Sarmini is a Syrian singer. He is regarded as an icon of the Arab town vocal art and author of a vast musical spiritual repertory.

Born in Aleppo in 1962, he grew up in religious circles and attended the rituals of the dhikr from a very early age, presided over by his father, the Shaykh Muhammad Sarmini. Thus the father was able to guide the son by inculcating in him the most essential elements of the sacred repertory. Omar Sarmini then continued his musical education with the city's Arab Youth Club. So, like every self-respecting singer, his education has included an obligatory passage via the sacred repertory of Islam. He is currently one of the rising stars on the musical scene in Syria.

Chalf Hassan
Background information
Chalf Hassan is a young musician and singer from Morocco (Casablanca). He was born into a religious family, was steeped in Koranic culture but also became adept at a range of local percussion and stringed instruments. His music is based on traditional folk and classical songs given a distinctively personal treatment which he has developed since he first came to London in 1984. He played throughout Europe with Arab, Western and African Musicians for years before crossing cultural barriers to create his Arab-Spanish fusion.
With his lute, drums and an ever changing line-up of musicians Hassan started his carrier playing with groups and performed for theatre companies all over Morocco. He was also a member of professional orchestras and has formed a couple of groups that were named after him.
He is expert at playing many different and complex rhythms and music. For this he was invited by Hossam Ramzy to join Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (ex Led Zeppelin) on their historic reunion 1995/96 World tour.
