Yann Tiersen - Tabarly [2008]

For the 10th anniversary of Eric Tabarly's death, a famous skipper from Brittany (Northwest of France), the director Pierre Marcel and Galatee Film release a biography of this unsurpassed sailor on June, 11. Galatee Film did not hesitate at all to suggest another exceptional Breton (from Brittany), i.e. Yann Tiersen to compose the soundtrack of this outstanding film. As usual, Yann Tiersen did not just make a music that illustrate the film, but he made a full-fledged, independent, personal and powerful music. Yann made an instrumental music that gives pride of place to the piano and to the intimist melodies which will delight his biggest fans.If anything, the brevity of some of the pieces becomes something of a tease, as you'd just love him to flesh them out into more complete cuts. This album really has all the elements of Tiersen's work, predominantly keyboards with loads of other instruments thrown in, all played by Mr T himself. After Eric Zonca's « la vie rêvee des anges » , « Amelie from Montmartre » and « Goodbye Lenin », Yann Tiersen composed his fourth soundtrack and as the previous films, it is a safe bet that it will be a success! The record has been initially made for vinyl and the mastering has been made from this vinyl. The sound is therefore warm and powerful.This is a more stark set than others he has done, almost Satie-esque in places, but it is quite, quite beautiful

Gelka - Less Is More [2008]

First coming to our attention via the Cafe Del Mar compilations of recent years Budapest Producers/Musicians Gelka seem more at home in the Balearics rather than Hungary. Yet it is the vibe of the latter with its almost guitar dominated folksy roots that gives this debut set an edge in the music of the good groove. Interspersed with some strange sound effects of no benefit, the album largely features a variety of good quality tracks that mix chilled-out funky tempos with the soulful vocals of Ghanaian born Sena. The album flows from one song to another with a graceful stealth, becoming the background and soothing any situation. The production values and the musical ability demonstrated are of an incredibly high standard as songs dip into jazz, funk and blues and electronic sounds accompany a wealth of instruments. Soulful is the only way you could describe the whole album. It is obvious that Gelka have put their heart into making this a credible album. Overall, the album is downtempo electronica urban blues with some added soul and beats against a background of Hungarian melancholy and oozes class and style worthy of exploration.

Kid Loco - Kill Your Darlings [2001]

Multi-talented Parisian goes all acoustic on this album. The dubby, cinematic trip-hop he's known for is still lurking, but it's an album of more traditional 'real songs' even echoing Lou Reed and Serge Gainsbourg at times. Drifting acoustic strummings, folky, bluesy, riffs work well with the vocals and cheeky numbers like Three Feet High Reefer are quite fun but somehow it fails to live up to the concept - Kid Loco doing proper songs. Strummed acoustic guitar fills the Velvets-like reminiscing of "Cocaine Diana," followed by the Stones-ish swell of "Lucy's Talking," which is offset by blasts of tuba and trumpet. Spooky Gregorian chants intro the album's first truly trip-hop track, "Horsepower in Vain," which uses sitar and groaning brass to create an ominous night vision. The respite comes with the lilting Cubano strut of "Gypsie Good Time," the bittersweet "I Can't Let It Happen to You," and the bolting big beats of "Going 'Round in Circles." Merging despondent vocals with fleshy trip-hop, Kill Your Darlings attempts avant punk/trip-hop assimilation. Kudos for experimentation.

Kamchatka - Kamchatka (2005)

Kamchatka are a Swedish power trio highly influenced by late 1960s and early 1970s blues-rock bands. Their sound combines elements of blues-rock, stoner rock and psychedelic rock.

Kamchatka took their name from the volcanically active Russian Kamchatka Peninsula that divides the Okhotsk and the Bering Sea.

In 2005 Kamchatka released their self titled debut Kamchatka, a 14 track album containing 3 covers: “I Love Everybody” originally written by blues-rocker Johnny Winter. The 2 other songs, “Auto Mowdown” and “Spacegirl Blues” were written by Gerald V. Casale of New Wave band Devo (from compilation Hardcore Devo: Volume One). The album was recorded at Shrimpmonkey studios by Nicolas Elgstrand.

In 2007, Before Kamchatka’s second album Volume II was released, guitarist Thomas Andersson collaborated on a project with Opeth keyboardist Per Wiberg and Clutch drummer Jean-Paul Gaster, amongst others.

Kamchatka have been influenced by several genres including blues, progressive rock, stoner rock and jazz and by artists such as Devo, Ali Farka Touré, Cactus, King Crimson, Kyuss, Sarah Vaughan and Chet Baker.

Thomas Andersson’s guitar playing is mainly riff based and is considered highly inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower, therefore Kamchatka are often compared to heavy blues-rock bands active in the late 1960s and early 1970s like The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin and Cream. The band has been labeled hard rock,[6] stoner rock, jam band, power trio and blues-rock.

High Five Quintet - Five For Fun [2008]

The Blue Note debut of the High Five Quintet -- an Italian combo we've really grown to love, and who sound especially nice in this setting! Mo Horizons - 10 Years Of ... [2008]

2008 two CD set. Hannover is sometimes known as 'Bosshanover' , although this tropical moniker may appear deceptive as blue seas and palm trees are pretty rare around these parts! Nevertheless, it can be argued that this is the place where the primordial mixture of 'Nu-Bossa' and funky breaks first sprang to life in the mid '90s. By the end of that decade, music maniacs Ralf Droesemeyer and Mark 'Foh' Wetzler were so uninspired by the 4/4 tedium of the local club scene, that they took the initiative to re-examine their love for Bossa, Jazz, Soul and Boogaloo within the dance music genre, and from this Mo'Horizons were born. The Mo' Horizons crew have since gained a truly international reputation. Whether it's on tour as DJ-team, or with a soundsystem, they have left audiences across the globe touched by the 'Bosshanover' sun. Over the last 10 years, musical styles have come and gone, but Mo' Horizons still sound as fresh and life affirming as they did a decade ago. Plus, with a few new remixes in the package, the boys certainly haven't forgotten to 'Remember Tomorrow'. High Note.

Brand X - "Masques"

Compositionally, this has got to be the strongest Brand-X outing, each song has such strong melodic content complimented by the typically sly British wit that had long been their trademark.

The band's sound here is a bit punchier and a bit more colorful, owing to the presence of keyboardist Peter Robinson and all his cool textures, as well as percussionist Morris Pert contributing more compositionally and adding even more cool sounds and various metallic objects. Veteran session drummer Chuck Burgi adds a punchier sound as well, sounding nothing like Phil Collins (who by this point had no time to devote to Brand-X).

All throughout, for me the real star is bassist Percy Jones, not only with his unique stuttering/guttural fretless style but also his compositions. If the disc has one tune that stands head and shoulders above the rest, it would be Percy's "Ghost of The Mayfield Lodge" with its alternately whimsical and spooky melodies and textures. The fun part of this tune is the middle section where Percy and Morris bat spooky phrases back and forth as Peter Robinson conjures up all kinds of cool spook sounds on his synths.

"Deadly Nightshade" is easily my other favorite track here, with the whole band just firing on all cylinders, spinning out colorful melodies, witty interjections and a rip snortin' last few minutes of sheer fusion bliss with a grand ending!

As Brand X continued into their recording existence, they seemed to become increasingly less a band and more of a revolving musicians' collective of sorts, something very uncommon to see nowadays. Made after their live album Livestock, fourth album Masques is somewhat interesting in a number of aspects. A few key members in the band sat out this recording, only to leap back on for the next one. Robin Lumley, the band's keyboardist up until then, served as the producer of this rather than a musician. Phil Collins was off touring with Genesis, and so he also isn't present, replaced here by Chuck Bergi. However, both Lumley and Collins would be back as musicians for next year's release Product. Masques is also somewhat unusual in terms of the writing, with percussionist Morris Pert contributing a majority of the pieces ("Black Moon," "Deadly Nightshade," and "Earth Dance"). This album marks Pert's apex in the band, as he would slide to the periphery with Product, and then be out completely.

"Masques" is a pleasant ambient piece, primarily a musical dialogue between Jones, Robinson, and Pert. "Black Moon" is calm with an easy-going, slightly lounge melody. On "Deadly Nightshade," Goodsall gets in a pretty furious solo that goes toe-to-toe with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu-era solos, and "Earth Dance" includes some feature spots for Pert and Bergi that are fun.

Brand X's fourth album, 1978's "Masques," saw this outstanding progressive jazz/rock group go through a line-up change. Drummer Phil Collins was too busy touring with Genesis in support of their just-released album, "And Then There Were Three," so Chuck Burgi filled in on the drumkit. Keyboardist Robin Lumley decided to step away from the keyboards and produce the album instead---though I haven't a clue why---and his place was taken by keyboardist Peter Robinson. But both Burgi and Robinson fit the bill perfectly, as "Masques" remains a major highlight in Brand X's catalog. The material is very strong, and the band's performances are sizzling. Standouts include the hard-driving jazz/rock of "The Poke," the gorgeous "Black Moon," the incredible workout "Access To Data," and the spooky fun of "The Ghost Of Mayfield Lodge." Fabulous jams, and awesome music all the way around. Brand X's "Masques" is one of the group's very best releases.
