Six Litanies for Heliogabalus is an album by John Zorn. It is the third album to feature the "Moonchild Trio" of Mike Patton, Joey Baron and Trevor Dunn, following Moonchild: Songs Without Words (2005) and Astronome (2006) and the first to feature additional performers. The promotional notes that accompany the US CD Release indicate that the concept for the recording was inspired by the Roman Emperor Heliogabalus.[1]

Hardingrock: Grimen


Hardingrock (named after the Norwegian national instrument, the Harding fiddle) is an avant-garde, folk/metal project that consists of Ihsahn (Emperor, Peccatum), Heidi S. Tveitan (StarofAsh, Peccatum), and famed Norwegian fiddler Knut Buen. Be warned that Grimen is not a traditional black metal recording by any means. This is an artistic foray into culture consisting of electronic and acoustic elements that navigate highly articulate, classically influenced melodies and structures whilst simultaneously providing a generational bridge to connect the past to the future. It should also be mentioned that all the vocals and spoken word (songs 1, 4, 7, & 10) are in Norwegian; providing mature and expressive range to the identity of the project.

Leaving the metal comfort zone and looking at the songs collectively, many of them are based on variable harmonic structures that recall an almost "pastoral" feel of a world unhindered by excess. This is especially true in the songs with prominent violin as heard in "Huldreslatten" & "Den Bergtekne". Beyond the use of normal elements, Hardingrock is really about communicating heritage through musical prose and listening to the symphonic grandeur of "Fanitullen" & "Faens Marsj" you find the band conveying that message with a soloist musical perspective where each individual motif has a distinctive voice that encourages diversity, while striving for equality and relevance. In short, you are just hit with wave after wave of evolving contrast. What is interesting is that these folkloric melodies influenced no other than composer Edvard Grieg, whose name celebrates a popular recording hall coveted by Norwegian black metal musicians. This is the very hall that Emperor used for the creation of Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk. Again, it is all about connection.

In moving closer towards the closing of this musical observance, it is not of my intent to imply that there are not as many modern/contemporary elements to the cd as the romantic ones that I have focused more on in the review. The signature croak of Ihsahn is certainly there in ample measure as are the captivating/majestic vocals of wife Heidi Tveitan in the songs "Daudingen", "Den Bergtekne" & "Fossegrimen". Finally, in "Nykken" you are greeted with the sound of swelling relaxation; permeating into scratchy rhythms and ending in an instrumental where purpose never sounded so mesmerizing. The rest is for your own journey of discovery.

Grimen (Out: Sept.25th) is challenging, highbrow and rewarding listening experience delivered with a production that is clear, full and expansive. This is a profound exploration and declaration of ones heritage delivered through the passages of musical medium. The reason for such an elevated standing is something earned through vision and fortitude. All those involved have truly created something peerless and unique.

Tyburn Tall was formed in 1969 in Speyer by Werner Gallo (g, born 1951), Hanns Dechant (dr, born 1948), Stefan Kowa (b, born 1950) and Gunther Göttsche (k, born 1954), all of whom made their musical experience playing in the beat band The Screamers since 1965, with the exception of Gunther Göttsche. Tyburn Tall planned to explore new musical paths by adding Gunther to their original line-up, thus switching from the 60s beat imitation (a-la the Stones and the Beatles) to their own unique mixture of rock, classical and jazz.

The band chose their name the same way the Grateful Dead did. They glanced through a history book discovering an English town called Tyburn. Legends tell of a tall tree in Tyburn on which, in the era of Oliver Cromwell, unwanted persons were hung. The band changed 'Tyburn tree' to Tyburn Tall for no other reason than because it just sounded better. In the spring of 1970, the band had their first big success in the Speyer area with their new show mainly consisting of self-written titles. In June, flute player Hermann Damiantschitsch, born in 1951, strengthened the band which, during the summer, finalised an instrumental piece in three movements called "Autagonia", a Greek word meaning "fight with yourself". It was written by the brilliant organ player Gunther Göttsche, son of the musical director of the regional church at the time, and Stefan Kowa who had had classical piano training, supported by the family tradition, as his mother and grandmother gave piano lessons and his grandfather was a violinist himself. In September 1970, "Autagonia" was premiered with huge success, also due to titles like Bach's Third Brandenburg concert which was made famous in the rock music world by Keith Emerson and The Nice, and themes from Dvorak's performance "Aus der Neuen Welt". A recording of this concert still exists and may be released on CD one day if the sound quality can be technically improved. Until May 1971, Tyburn Tall successfully toured supporting Golden Earring (in Speyer, Zweibrücken and Landau), Space Odetty (who changed to Frumpy later on) and Renaissance (in Landau and Ludwigshafen). At the end of May 1971, Göttsche and Damiantschitsch left the band for private reasons, and in June were replaced by Reinhard Magin (born 1948) on keyboards and singer/percussionist Klaus Fresenius (born 1952). Tyburn Tall went back to the rehearsal room revising their program towards a sound influenced more by jazz-rock elements than classical patterns and following idols like John Hiseman's Colosseum. First gigs in the beginning of 1972 proved that the band had not lost an inch of popularity with their new line-up. In the spring of 1972, they decided to record four self-written tracks for a new album in a small private recording studio in Bellheim in the Vorderpfalz under the name of Tyburn Tall. The gatefold sleeve shows the inside of a copper plate by Merian, deliberately including details, which Merian could not know of in his time. It is reproduced inside the CD reissue booklet. The album was released in a limited edition of privately manufactured 200 copies, half of which was destroyed in a fire in a music shop called Markus in Speyer. Rarity and artistic value are the reasons why this album is the most expensive collectors item in Germany, dealt for 5000 DM. Unfortunately, the master tapes are not available anymore. That's why for producing this CD, a mint copy of the album had to be recorded onto a DAT, and the sound - processed with Cedar's NoNoise system in studio Pfanz in Hamburg, thus eliminating all surface noise, so that master tape quality is achieved. The heavy tape noise could already be heard on the album and could only be partially eliminated. Additional tracks on this CD are "Lost Angeles" and "Bring Out Your Dead", both cover versions of Colosseum tracks.

In 1972, Pino Cirillo (g) replaced Werner Gallo who had to leave the band. Tyburn Tall split up in late 1975, when Stefan Kowa moved to Belgium for professional reasons. They had played 40 to 50 gigs since 1969, supporting, besides Golden Earring, Space Odetty and Renaissance, Amon Düül II, Frumpy, Taste, East of Eden, Ekseption, Kin Ping Meh, Nine Days Wonder, Bitch, Hardin & York, the Rainbows and the Petards, a.o. Again and again they proved to be as good as more well-known bands - at least newspaper reviews were full of praise.

Nowadays only Klaus Fresenius and Hanns Dechant remain musically active, playing in a local band called Blues und Bloedel. Stefan Kowa continues writing his own material in his home studio; the first CD is on its way. In time for their 25th anniversary, the band plans to gig once more, in the fall of 1995 in Speyer. Time and venue to be announced…

France’s AMESOEURS (masterminded by none other than multi-instrumentalist Neige of ALCEST)
have finally completed work on their mind-blowing and much-anticipated debut album, simply titled “Amesoeurs”.

To be released by Code666 Records in late march 2009, following the band’s highly praised and acclaimed 2007 “Ruines Humaines” EP

Formed by Neige and vocalist Audrey Sylvain in 2004, in opposition to Alcest,

Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus is an album released by the psychedelic rock ensemble Spirit. Produced by David Briggs, who is best known for his work with Neil Young, and whom they chose on Young's recommendation. The original LP was released in 1970 by Epic shortly before the original group disbanded.

This diverse yet cohesive effort is a sci-fi-based, loose concept album. The album's second song is the key track "Nature's Way", the most notable hit (along with "I've Got a Line on You" – #28 in Canada) the band would ever produce. "Mr. Skin" also became a hit single in the U.S., three years after the album's release. The album also includes several other less well-known tunes which are considered to have had an impact on the genre of experimental rock in the United States.

The album influenced many other groups -- the track "Morning Will Come" presaged the emerging glam rock trend and sounds strikingly similar to the music of Marc Bolan and T. Rex, and the piano figure that opens the instrumental track "Space Child" closely resembles the piano intro of the 1978 Steely Dan hit "FM". A modern nod to Spirit was given by Sam Beam of lo-fi indie band Iron and Wine. The breakdown in "Wolves (Song of the Shepherd's Dog)" matches that in "Prelude-Nothing to Hide".

Just as in previous attempts, Spirit fused aspects of jazz and folk together with their traditional rock stylings, but also introduced added elements of space rock, or popular music's science-fiction subset. This innovative LP is also notable as one of the first rock albums to use the newly-developed Moog synthesizer.

The group's first album, Spirit, was released in 1968. "Mechanical World" was released as a single (it lists the playing time merely as "very long"). The album was a substantial underground hit, reaching #31 and staying on the charts for over eight months. The album displayed jazz influences, as well as using elaborate string arrangements (not found on their subsequent recordings) and is the most overtly psychedelic of their albums.

They capitalized on the success of their first album with another single, "I Got A Line On You". Released in November 1968, a month before their second album, The Family That Plays Together, it became their biggest hit single, reaching #25 on the charts (#28 in Canada). The album matched its success, reaching #22. They also went on tour that year with support band Led Zeppelin, who were heavily influenced by Spirit -- Led Zeppelin played an extended medley during their early 1969 shows that featured "Fresh Garbage" among other songs, Jimmy Page's use of a theremin has been attributed to his seeing Randy California use one which he had mounted to his amplifier, and it is now widely accepted that Page lifted the descending guitar figure from Spirit's instrumental "Taurus" for Led Zeppelin's signature tune "Stairway To Heaven"[1].

After this success, the group was asked by French film director Jacques Demy to record the soundtrack to his film, Model Shop and they also made a brief appearance in the film. Their third album, Clear, released in 1969, reached #55 on the charts. Spirit were offered the spot right before Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, but they were advised to turn it down and concentrate on a promotional tour for their third album. Record company managers felt that the festival would not be significant, which it did not seem so at that time, and so they missed out on the massive international exposure that the festival and the subsequent film documentary generated.

"1984" and the Sardonicus era

After the release of Clear, California was called upon again to give the group a hit single. With the group producing the record on their own, they recorded a song California had written called "1984". With a title that echoed the George Orwell book of the same name, it was one of California's finest, and it boasted an excellent production job (and was one of the most ferocious things that Spirit would ever record).[citation needed] And it looked at first like it would be the group's biggest hit yet. Soon after being released, it raced up the charts to #69.

In retrospect, nobody is completely sure why the single had such a brief chart life, but there are several possibilities. It is no secret that Lou Adler's alliance with Epic Records was uneasy at best, and at the time that the single was released, Adler's distribution deal with Epic came to an end. He had been eager to move distribution of the label to A&M Records, which he did as soon as the deal with Epic ended, which might have killed the commercial availability of the single (though Adler ended up giving Spirit's contract to Epic in the process). It has also been said that there was a tip sheet distributed to radio stations outlining the song's supposed political and social views, and opining that it might not be appropriate for air play . The song would finally see general release on The Best Of Spirit in 1973.

In 1970, Spirit started working on what is widely considered to be their best LP, Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. On the recommendation of Neil Young the band chose David Briggs as the producer. It was a prolific time for the group's writers and the album was finally released in late 1970. Especially memorable was Randy California's poignant "Nature's Way", which was written in an afternoon when the group was playing at the Fillmore West in San Francisco.

Epic released an early mix of "Animal Zoo" as a single, but this only made it to #97 on the charts. Like The Who's Tommy and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, it is critically regarded as a landmark of art-rock, with a tapestry of literary themes about the fragility of life and the complexity of the human experience, illustrated by recurring lyric "life has just begun", and continued the group's pioneering exploration of enviromnental issues in their lyrics (cf. "Fresh Garbage"). The album is also notable for its inventive production and the use of a modular Moog synthesizer.

Second Life Syndrome is the second full length album by progressive rock band Riverside, released on November 8, 2005. This second release garnered quite as much praise as Out of Myself and was released on the large prog rock Label InsideOut. Second Life Syndrome has a noticeably more raw and heavy feel than Out of Myself which in general was much more laid back and mellow. The title track has been said in one radio interview to be one of the best songs to sum up Riverside's sound. The song contains three parts: A slightly aggressive first part, a mellow and quiet second part, and an instrumental third part. This album is the second part of the Reality Dream trilogy which would explain the first and last track's titles; Second Life Syndrome comes after Out of Myself but before Rapid Eye Movement.

Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy named Second Life Syndrome one of his favourite albums of 2005.[citation needed]

Ashes Against the Grain is an album by American metal band Agalloch under the Brooklyn, New York-based label, The End Records. It is Agalloch's third full-length release, four years after the critically acclaimed The Mantle.

Before the release, the track "Falling Snow" was made available in its entirety on the label's website and on the band's MySpace page. Reports indicate a version of the album was leaked on the web in May 2006.

A pre-release review in the July 2006 issue of Toronto-based Exclaim! magazine described the new album as a "departure and an extension" from the band's previous work:

The songs tend to move with restraint, as Agalloch's characteristic threads of black metal, folk and ambient sounds coalesce with more doom and art rock.

Three versions of the album were released: a slipcase edition, a deluxe wooden box version (limited to 500 copies) and a vinyl version (limited to 1000 copies).

The vinyl version was released on March 2nd, 2007 through The End Records' Infinite Vinyl Series. It was pressed in three different colors:

* A clear/orange splatter edition limited to 200 copies.
* A black edition limited to 400 copies.
* A clear orange edition limited to 400 copies.

All three vinyl editions include an exclusive bonus track, Scars Of The Shattered Sky (Our Fortress Has Burned To The Ground)

Description: Koyaanisqatsi is a documentary (of sorts). It is also a visual concert of images set to the haunting music of 'Phillip Glass' . While there is no plot in the traditional sense, there is a definate scenario. The film opens on ancient native American cave drawings, while the soundtrack chants "Koyaanisqatsi" which is a Hopi indian term for "life out of balance". The film uses extensive time lapse photography (which speeds images up) and slow motion photography to make comparisons between different types of physical motion. In one of the first examples, we see cloud formations moving (sped up) intercut with a montage of ocean waves (slowed down) and in such a way we are able to see the similarities of movement between these natural forces. This technique of comparison exists throughout the film, and through it we learn more about the world around us. The film progresses from purely natural environments to nature as affected by man, and finally to man's own manmade environment, devoid of nature yet still following the patterns of natural flow as depicted in the beginning of the film, yet in chaos and disarray. Through this the film conveys its key message, which is Koyaanisqatsi: life out of balance; crazy life; life in turmoil; life disintegrating; a state of life that calls for another way of living.
