Asa Irons & Swaan Miller - Asa Irons & Swaan Miller (2007)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/afxe4d

The first thing that strikes you about this record is just how beautiful an object it is: originally this material was released on CD-R but now sees an opaque grey vinyl release on limited to 600 copies. Couple that with the lovingly produced Hillary Irons artwork glued to the sleeve and you’ve got a seriously desirable item. But what of the music? Much as with his work in Feathers, Irons’ sound is at the ‘wyrd’ end of the current American folk scene, but here his songs are devoid of any elaborate psyched-out arrangements and instead are delivered as intimate, homespun ballads. A great document of unadorned, starkly beautiful songwriting from an oft-overlooked talent.

This record is forever. After listending to it you'll realise that it doesn't matter that Asa Irons plays in Witch with J Mascis as well as the acclaimed folk outfit Feathers. This record needs no associations and it's songs are so timeless that they feel as if they've been passed around for generations and hardly need any recording medium at all. This is the first release from Asa Irons and Swann Miller but it sounds like they've lived within each others voices for a million years. Asa's deep-breath-voice lays down a mossy hill for Swann's beautiful voice to tread upon. His guitar work is simply intricate and his fingerpicking perfectly suits the way their voices combine to become one. This record always has been and always will be. This record is forever....

The Ladybug Transistor - Can't Wait Another Day (06/2007)

http://www.gigasize.com/get.php/1291655 ... er_Day.rar

The Ladybug Transistor story begins in Brooklyn, NY during the mid-1990’s. Their debut album, Marlborough Farms (1995 – Sit N Spin), named after the band's fabled Victorian Flatbush headquarters and studio, was a recording project based around founding member Gary Olson's collaborations with friends. They soon caught the attention of Merge Records who released Beverley Atonale in 1997. It was around this time that Ladybug Transistor evolved into a proper band with siblings Jennifer and Jeff Baron, Sasha Bell, San Fadyl and Julia Rydholm. This collective crafted the trilogy of The Albemarle Sound (1999 – Merge), Argyle Heir (2001 – Merge), and The Ladybug Transistor (2003 – Merge), on which The Ladybug Transistor developed their trademark sound - a distillation of classic pop, characterized by a precise melodicism that is anchored by the restrained baritone of Olson.

As Marlborough Farms has become a gathering place for the musicians that Ladybug has befriended over the years, the band took advantage of this situation by recruiting many of them to contribute to their latest full length Can't Wait Another Day. The album features spirited contributions from members of Aislers Set, Architecture in Helsinki, The Clientele, Jens Lekman, Kevin Barker (Currituck Co., Vetiver), Heather McIntosh (Circulatory System, Instruments) Roy Nathanson (Lounge Lizards/Jazz Passengers) and others. The first fruits of these sessions were heard on 2006's Here Comes The Rain EP, which also introduced two new members to the family, with Kyle Forester and Ben Crum of Great Lakes enhancing the Ladybug sound by adding inspired keyboards and guitar.

Ladybug Transistor also recently worked with Soft Machine legend Kevin Ayers on a soon-to-be-released album that was produced by Olson, whose other recent recording projects also include work with Mates of State, Circulatory System, and a duet with Sweden's Marit Bergman.

Can't Wait Another Day will be released June 7th, and the band plans to tour throughout the rest of year in both the US and Europe.

The Ladybug Transistor are: Gary Olson, Julia Rydholm, Ben Crum, Kyle Forester, San Fadyl, Jeff Baron and friends…

Kid Dakota - The West Is the Future (2004)

http://rapidshare.com/files/29928570/Ki ... e.rar.html

Time Out New York
"A gorgeously sprawling fever dream laced with some of the most evocative addiction imagery since Elliott Smith's darker days."
---------
Recorded mostly live, Kid Dakota's The West Is The Future captures the intensity and dynamic range of the Minneapolis band as a four-piece, with long-time drummer Christopher McGuire (John Vanderslice) and songwriter Darren Jackson (Olympic Hopefuls), as well as guitarist Erik Appelwick (Vicious Vicious) and bassist Zak Sally (Low). The darkly cinematic album picks up where 2002's So Pretty left off, with moody, melodic vocals, howling guitars and impeccably arranged percussion fueling the backdrop for poignant stories of loss and longing. This time around, in addition to airing his own such history, Jackson turns his keen poetic sensibilities outward to the tragic ironies of the early American West, simultaneously channeling the indomitable optimism and the utter despair that necessarily accompany the discovery of a new and savage frontier. Slow, sultry waltzes nudge their way into full-on rock songs, the stylistic diversity adding to the ambivalence of the songs' narrators, each of who has his own wonderful and terrible tale to spin. Bat for Lashes - Fur & Gold (2006)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/rpfbvw

2006 release from this mature Gothic outfit. Bat For Lashes is the creation of Natasha Khan, a Pakistan-born, Brighton based songwriter. Her concept for Fur And Gold was to make something that started at dusk and finished up in the glorious sunlight. That gives you an idea of what this ethereal, cinematic album sounds like. Natasha's soaring howls, whispers and joyous singing are the main focus here. As beguiling as Bjork, as stunning as Sinead O'Connor and as dramatic as Kate Bush, it is her voice that dominates. The often minimal backdrop of haunting strings, unusual percussive instruments and drum machines provides the perfect accompaniment. Mature gothic sounds for those willing to be whisked off to beautiful faraway lands. 11 tracks. Echo.

Robert Wyatt - Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (1975)[1998]

http://rapidshare.com/files/25182551/Ru ... ichard.rar

Robert Wyatt's voice is as distinctive and subtle an instrument as Tom Waits's or Bessie Smith's. He stretches his vocal chords through alien alto registers with grace, into notes few male singers are comfortable with past puberty. It's not stretching things to compare his work on Ruth to that of the greatest jazz-influenced singers. Wyatt knows how to throw a band together, too, choosing musicians who'll do their respective things complementarily, subtly. If you have trouble with the jazz comparison, dig his group's take on Charlie Haden's "Song for Che." This disc brims with woozy, lush underwater-sounding, underground pop, augmented by chaps like Fred Frith and Brian Eno. It's clever, playful music, ahead of its time because it's timeless and filled with a profound, infectious, children's book-type humor. --Mike McGonigal

Bonde do Role - With Lasers (2007)

http://www.mediafire.com/?1yemntdtebq

Hailing from Curitiba, in Southern Brazil, Bonde Do Role have created a mash up of Baile Funk beats and playfully profane raps in their native Portuguese tongue. Bonde do Role’s dance party punk is the sound of 2007.

Discovered by DJ/Producer Diplo in 2006, Bonde Do Role released their first domestic single Melo do Tabaco on Diplo’s newly formed Mad Decent label. Diplo went on to co-produce Bonde’s upcoming single "Solta o Frango" for Domino Records and his credits will further extend to Bonde’s full length album, With Lasers out June 5th, 2006 as the executive producer.

“Bonde Do Role is like diggin’ through the garbage in Brazil and using the pieces and making a club mess turned up the volume plus 10. It’s like death samba metal bass with Cooledit Pro cause I already played out that “novo” Beastie Boys thing.” - Diplo
---
The Brazilian trio's debut album, With Lasers, arrives in physical formats on June 5 in the U.S. and June 4 in the UK and Europe via Domino.

The catch is that the album is available for download right now on iTunes, which is a little strange. However, for those who like their BdR DRM-free, two months is no time at all.

Margo Guryan - Take A Picture (1968)[2001]

http://rapidshare.com/files/28498008/ma ... e.zip.html

All tracks have been digitally remastered. Sometimes when an adored cult obscurity is reissued, it becomes clear that a lot (if not all) of its mystique was due to its rarity. However, this time the buzz is justified: TAKE A PICTURE is a 1960s soft-pop masterpiece. The sound is a delightful collision, with surprisingly funky electric piano and Steve Cropper-style guitar leads dueling over prominent, clunky drums and unobtrusive orchestrations. Over it all, Guryan's breathy overdubbed vocals--her wispy, wobbily-pitched babytalk style was clearly heavily influenced by bossa nova pioneer Astrud Gilberto, who covered this album's dreamy "Think of Rain"--give the album its most attractive feature. Guryan is as accomplished a songwriter as she is a singer; her main influences seem to be Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bacharach/David, and that combination of bossa nova and sleek pop sophistication is the watchword. Sweetly poppy, lightly jazzy, and completely irresistible, this is sunshine pop at its finest.

Alternative Press (3/01, p.88] - "...This 1968 classic features Guryan's hushed, dulcet voice and ornate instrumentation and arrangements, which should win over fans of Love's FOREVER CHANGES, Nico's CHELSEA GIRLS and the Left Banke." CMJ (2/12/01, p.21) - "...Delible material. A must-hear for followers of the Bacharachian school of song..."

Bad Brains - Build A Nation (06/2007)

http://www.gigasize.com/get.php/1472280 ... Nation.zip

Bad Brains have announced Build a Nation, the title of the definitive American punk quartet's first proper studio LP in over a decade, arriving June 26 via Megaforce. The new album was produced by Beastie Boys' MCA, a.k.a. Adam Yauch, and is the first complete product from the Boys' New York City-based Oscilloscope Laboratories recording studio. "This album started in my studio with primal, classic Bad Brains intentions,” bassist Darryl Jenifer said in a press release. "I told Adam I was thinking about a new Brains record, then Adam said 'Word! You should let me produce that shit, son! I'll smoke those other cats that tried to produce y'all. I'll make you sound real!' I said 'Word!' And the rest is history.” Fans can catch Bad Brains this spring and summer, including an appearance at Sasquatch!, May 26-28 in George, WA, where the rockers will share the stage with the Beastie Boys.

Talking Heads' 30th anniversary is commemorated in typically artful style here, sonically upgrading their eight, era-defining albums via bonus-packed Dual Discs and encasing them in a molded white plastic box intricately embossed with the band's song titles. Each disc contains complete album tracks and bonus cuts remastered in High Resolution Stereo on its CD side, while the DVD programming on the flip offers up the audio tracks in expansive new 5.1 Surround Sound mixes, with all of the sonic upgrading personally supervised by Heads drummer Jerry Harrison. Those long overdue audio improvements alone would make it an attractive set, but fans of the band will find its wealth of bonus music (various B-sides and previously unreleased outtakes) and video (including a number of rare live clips seeing their first release here) supplements equally intriguing.
Bonus musical highlights include four rhythmically-charged, unfinished Remain in Light outtakes (including one that eventually evolved into the band's signature "Once in a Lifetime") that allow insightful glimpses into Eno's innovative production techniques on the album, alternate versions of "Cities," "Life During Wartime" and "Mind" from Fear of Music, a countrified version of "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel" from More Songs About.. and a strangely muted early version of another Heads staple, Speaking in Tongue's "Burning Down the House." An early demo of "And She Was" from Little Creatures demostrates that the whole of a glorius pop song can be the assembly of its simple parts. While the additional visual materials (especially the raw early performance clips) are a welcome addition to the Heads' canon, they're also something of a tradeoff: a few of the band's videos are conspicuously absent, including Remain in Light's "Once in a Lifetime." But overlooking a couple of the band's better known promotional moments in favor of revealing new musical treasures and vastly improved, state-of-the-art audio scarcely blunts the appeal of this rewarding career overview. -- Jerry McCulley
-------------
Formed in the mid-70's by art school chums David Byrne, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth-and ex-Modern lover Jerry Harrison-Talking Heads rose out of the CBGB punk crucible and proved themselves one of the most artistically adventurous and influential bands ever. Their visionary, polyrhyhmic sound fused elements including rock, funk, and punk with diverse world beats, avant-garde minimalism, and pure pop genius. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the band and their groundbreaking repertoire are celebrated in Rhino's deluxe DualDisc upgrade of their catalog. Now their critically praised recordings can be reexperienced as never before, with new DVD-A Surround mixes personally supervised by Jerry Harrison.

Andrew Bird - Sovay [CD Single] (2005)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/aiplda

Andrew Bird wrote a song called Sovay, featured on the album The Mysterious Production of Eggs, which is said to borrow loosely from the original English song.
***Sovay is a traditional English folk song about a young woman who dresses as a highwayman in order to test her lover. The name 'Sovay' is probably a corruption of 'Sophie' or 'Sylvie' - both of which appear instead in some versions of the song. Similarly pronounced names are the French Sauvee and Scandinavian Solveig.
Versions of the song have been recorded by: Bert Jansch, Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy & Pentangle.

01 - Sovay
02 - First Song (Live in Los Angeles, CA)
03 - Why? (Live in Flagstaff, AZ)
04 - Action/Adventure (Live in Flagstaff, AZ)
05 - Sovay (Live with My Morning Jacket in Boulder, CO)

Benoît Pioulard - Enge EP (2005)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ron2uk

After releasing several homemade cassettes and CD-Roms in limited batches, Benoit Pioulard's debut EP for Moodgadget, Enge, would feel right at home among the lo-fi acoustic heroes of the '90s and the indie folk heroes of the '00s. Bells, guitar, and an incoherent Pioulard on vocals reminiscing, but not overlong for the days when names like Lou Barlow and Elliott Smith rolled from the lips of every indie rocker from Boston to Bakersfield. Things get a bit more electronic-based with the cut-up vocals à la Telefon Tel Aviv on "Kids Are Getting Younger," but never really stray too far from home base, making Enge easily accessible for those with a phobia about finding electronics in their acoustic albums. For those who missed out on the limited-edition preciousness of Pioulard's other releases, this is a great place to get acquainted with an artist whose promise is just starting to fully bloom. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide

Jefferson Airplane - Volunteers (1969)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/5msqpi

This album made the Airplane's relations with the then ultra-conservative RCA a little tense. The label knew they had potentially one of America's biggest bands on their hands, and were compelled to let them use the "F" word--unprecedented on a major-label release at the time-- on "We Can Be Together." A more substantive sticking point, though, was the group's left-of-center political stance at that time, as expressed on the exhilarating call-to-arms title tune. VOLUNTEERS found the airplane at the vanguard of the burgeoning protest movement as realized in music, and "We Can Be Together" is more of a rallying cry than an invitation to a love-in. Even the Crosby-Stills-Kantner science fiction fantasy "Wooden Ships" is post-apocalyptic rather than dreamily fanciful. "Eskimo Blue Day" and "Good Shepherd" are additional high points, as is the blatant sexuality of "Hey Frederick" where Grace Slick sings "either go away or go all the way in."
------
Rolling Stone (2/21/70, p.46) - "...the best cut on the album is their version of 'Wooden Ships': an epic performance, and one of the best the Airplane has ever done....another major song...is 'Hey Fredrick', which contains some really inspired instrumental work..." Rolling Stone (12/7/00, p.114) - 4.5 stars out of 5 - "...The Airplane's last great blast of psychedelic magic...and an honest document of its time, sometimes painfully so....a thrilling testament to the power and beauty of despiar..." Uncut (p.128) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[I]t still creates inspirational heat."

3. Farm

Michael Franti - Songs From the Front Porch: An Acoustic Collection (2004)

http://www.megarotic.com/?d=X3V9HEIJ

In a world of outspoken artists, names like Steve Earle, John Mellencamp, Madonna, and even the Dixie Chicks come to mind. Michael Franti, ever the ambassador for social justice, is on the second tier of influential names singing without any hidden agenda.

On Songs From The Front Porch, Franti delivers his message unplugged, turned down from his renowned mix of electric soul, funk, and hip-hop amidst his "all the freaky people make the beauty in the world" hustle. Although there’s no mention of his band on the label, Franti is joined by his Spearhead mates, dosing the songs with a bit of groove above the chill voice and acoustic guitar. Featuring three new tunes, "Closer To The Sky," "Firefly," and "Anybody Seen My Mind," Franti delivers more of his hopeful messages in these trying times.

These positive vibrations fill the disc with a bit of Bob Marley here and some Marvin Gaye there. Songs like the chill "Closer To The Sky" and the dreamy "Sometimes" sooth you, rather than rev up the activist engines. Two acoustic versions from 2003's Everyone Deserves Music are also included. "Love’ll Set Me Free," which sounds like a What’s Going On out-take, and the funky "Love Invincible." benefiting from it’s simple chord progression and wurlitzer feed, prove that Franti can make music groove unplugged. Songs from his 2001 musical meditation Stay Human are given similar treatments, as "Oh My God," and "Stay Human" feel naked without their original female vocals harmonies, but manage to feel enlivened just the same.

These low-key tunes probably won’t make Franti’s arch nemesis George W flinch. However Songs From The Front Porch proves that message and voice can be strongly heard by just keeping it simple.

1. Yes I Will
2. Closer to the Sky
3. Firefly
4. Love'll Set Me Free
5. Love Invincible
6. Anybody Seen My Mind
7. Sometimes
8. Stay Human
9. Oh My God
10. Ganja Babe

Kimya Dawson - I'm Sorry That Sometimes I'm Mean (2002)

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1MSZ8XZ3

The sound is lo-fi, with occasional unidentifiable room noises intruding over a persistent low hum. The songs are quirky, with titles seldom cropping up prominently in the chorus -- for that matter, it's hard to find a chorus in most of these stream-of-consciousness pieces. Samples and rhythm tracks can be extremely bizarre; "Talking Ernest," for example, stumbles along over a crude cymbal loop as exclamations from one of those string-pull talking figures jab through a simple I-IV guitar strum. In other words, technical flaws and inexplicable oddities riddle I'm Sorry -- and none of them matter. In an almost tuneless monotone (except for her screeching, cathartic, and mystifying recitation of geographical names in the album's last moments), Kimya Dawson offers songs whose childlike language points to darkly introspective undercurrents. The fairytale feel of "Wandering Daughter," for example, infuses a sense of creepy foreboding into lines like "[I'll] give you my life if you give me a quarter," while the reassuring sound of a running shower takes on a pall of impending doom as the words reel between a child's plea and visions of dark violence on "Hold My Hand." By striking a balance between the ravages of experience and the innocence of a trusting nature, Dawson achieves a kind of eloquence that sophisticated production values cannot buy. ~ Robert L.
